How to fix key bindings error

Players get excited when a new game comes up. Like Cyberpunk 2077, the new RPG game has taken players by a storm since it launched this December.

But as many gamers anticipate it to be one of the biggest video games of the year, issues are coming up from every corner. The game seems to be littered with bugs that kept it from working either on a PC computer or a console. For one, Cyberpunk 2077 does not allow changes in the key binding set up. It creates a huge concern to most players who are ESDF gamers.

The key bindings of Cyberpunk 2077 are on WASD keys. It has not been an issue for some gamers since they can change the key bindings. However, in Cyberpunk 2077, it is not possible. When they try to change the key bindings settings or map the keyboard keys to different functions on a Windows 10 PC, they see the error “Key Binding Failed” on their Cyberpunk 2077 game. This affects players who use Steam or Stadia to play the game on PC. Left-handed gamers faced the same problem with the WASD keys found on the right side of the keyboard.

Fixing Cyberpunk 2077 Binding Failed Error when Changing Key Bindings on PC

Some players tend to give up on the issue unless CD Projekt Red, the game developer, addresses the problem and fix the error. But, if you want to try a workaround, check out the solutions below.

Solution #1 – Replace the Key in the Files

Before you start tinkering with the game files, make sure you save a backup in case of problems later on. Just keep a copy of the game files in a safe place and then start editing the key binding settings.

• Go to the Steam Library.
• Look for Cyberpunk 2077.
• Right-click on the game.
• Click Properties.
• Navigate to the Local Files tab.
• Select Browse Local Files.
• Go to Cyberpunk 2077.
• Click r6.
• Select config.
• Using a notepad, open the “inputUserMappings.xml”.
• Press Ctrl + F.
• Select Replace.
• Look for the “IK_F” for the F key.
• Now, replace it with any key you want. If you want to replace it with the G key, type “IK_G”.
• Save the file.
• Relaunch Cyberpunk 2077.

Solution #2 – Edit the Cyberpunk 2077 User Settings File

You can also try to edit the user settings.

• Go to C:UsersYOUAppdataCDPRCP77Usersettings.json.
• Open it in the notepad.
• Now edit the values.
• “IK_W” to “IK_Up”
• “IK_A” to “IK_Left”
• “IK_D” to “IK_Right”
• “IK_S” to “IK_Down”

Gta 5 key binding error

Here’s a very simple question with a seemingly impossible solution. I am trying to completely unbind F5, F6, F7 and F8.

Whenever I try to leave the settings menu it says my settings cannot be applied because I did not bind all controls required. These F-keys allow you to quick switch between characters. However, I still have Alt available to switch between characters.

I’m not sure why it’s forcing me to bind these keys, because I can still switch with Alt, and I simply don’t want to use these particular actions. I just want to use these keys for scripting.

Tips/help would be appreciated!

Sir, please don’t de-rail my topic.

Are you seriously calling me out to be a cheater because I want to add Quicksave and Quickload? Wow, you must be a fun person in real life!

Having a great time picking on smalltime developers trying to give back to the community? Do yourself a favor and annoy some ONLINE cheaters/hackers. There’s a BIG difference between a hacker and someone who wants to add more content to their Story Mode.

Now once again, does anyone know how to completely unbind keys?

I just want to use these keys for scripting.

There’s no point trying to ask on these forums mate. The vast majority of the users here are thick-skulled imbeciles who don’t understand that some people want to enjoy the game in their own ways.

Anyways, back on topic: The only way that I can think to help would be to rebind the switch character buttons to some other keys that you don’t use (Such as Page Up etc.). There might be a way to unbind them via some manual messing with the .ini files, but I don’t have enough experience with GTA V to argue either way.

I guess you’re right. Biggest problem is they’re putting online hacking children and community modders into the same boat. They don’t distinguish them as 2 different types of people with different intentions and goals.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and annoying children are basically anywhere, as long as the situation allows it. It only takes a 10-year old to find and download a GTAV trainer and subsequently use it — let alone in online mode. These people should be mad at Rockstar Games, as it is their responsibility to take effective actions or maybe even preemptive measures against such children.

Gta 5 key binding error

I am new to the GTA series.
I play on the Right side of the keyboard, so I use arrows, Delete/etc, numpad/etc.

Is there ANY way to get the movement, car, copter, etc etc to ALL be usable on the arrow keys?
As far as I have figured, I can have the vehicles on wasd, and on foot on arrows.
But, I cant have both vehicles and on foot on arrow keys, as it says the keys are already used, and will blank them out if I accept, then vehicles (or oon-foot) will be un-bound.

It’s too awkward to keep switching around, pushing keyboard left, then right, then left, then right.

I have limited space available playing on the right side as it is, and this would make it easier for me (WHY does this game have to use every keyboard key on the keyboard? Saints row uses like 14 keys, not 95. 🙁

Anyways, any help is appreciated.

u can change it ingame with the keyboard loayout, its right in the options above the graaphics settings. i swapped numpadkeys and arrows that way so i can fly with the arrowkeys + wasd and i use my cellphone and the «M-Key» menu over the numpad keys.

Yeah, arrows was taken by phone.
But even after re-binding the phone to other keys, I cant bind arrows for vehicle AND on-foot movement at the same time.

I can bind walk to arrows fine.
But, I want to bind them to vehicles also, and thats where the problem comes in.
I want up arrow to be forward in walk AND vehicles.
I want left to be left in walk and vehicles.
etc etc etc.

I dont want to HAVE to use arrows for walk, and wasd for vehicles.
Arrows for all.

I get a feeling that you used to play games like Doom, Quake, Duke3d, Rise of the Triad etc since that was the default controls for them. 😛 I know because I had the habit for quite a few years until I forced myself to use WSAD.

Yep, I still do play those types of games (and those exact games, from gog.com, hehe).

Battlefield Hardline, Wolfenstein: The New Order, etc etc (FPS games).
But, I played The Crew, Saints Row 3 and 4, and GTA V looked like SR 3/4, so I gave it a shot. And, I am having this issue.

Maybe I will look at it tomorrow, and see if it fixed itself (the game looked horrible after the install, rebooted and did MS updates (lots of .net downloads were done), and it looks a lot better today.
Who knows, it may be a temp glitch like the graphics was.

Cyberpunk 2077 does not let you change your key binding set up? That’s an error code that drove many gamers mad. And that’s understandable, especially if you’re an ESDF gamer. Indeed, left-handed gamers will have a hard time playing the game on the WASD configuration.

As you all know, the Cyberpunk key binding is actually set by default on the WASD keys. But if you prefer using a different configuration, you may get the ‘Key Binding Failed‘ error when applying the changes.

So, if you haven’t given up on the game yet and did not ask for a refund, use the following workarounds to fix the key binding problem. Don’t forget to backup your game before you perform any troubleshooting steps. Keep a copy of the game file just in case.

How to Fix Key Binding Failed on Cyberpunk 2077

Method 1 – Update Cyberpunk

All arrow keys are bindable as of Cyberpunk Patch 1.06. In other words, every key, except for F, is bindable. That’s a very good piece of news for left-hand players.

So, the first thing you should do is update your game. If the problem persists, go to the next solution.

Method 2 – Change the Key in the Config File

1. Launch Steam and click on Library.
2. Locate Cyberpunk and right-click on it.
3. Then select Properties.
4. After that, click on the Local Files tab.
5. Select Browse Local Files.
6. Navigate to Cyberpunk 2077 and click r6.
7. Then select config and open the inputUserMappings.xml file. Use a simple text editor to do that.
8. Locate the IK_F key config. Replace it with the you want. To do that, replace the F with your key for choice. For example, replace IF_K with IF_L.
9. Apply the changes and restart Cyberpunk.

Method 3 – Use the User Settings File

1. Navigate to your Cyberpunk folder. For most users, the path to follow is this: C:UsersYOUAppdataCDPRCP77Usersettings.json.
2. Open the UserSettings file with a text editor.
3. Locate the following key values:
   • IK_W
   • IK_A
   • IK_D
   • IK_S
4. Replace the W, A, S and S keys with the keys you want. For example, you can replace them with the navigation arrows. If you select this key configuration, at the end, you should have this layout:
   • IK_Up
   • IK_Left
   • IK_Right
   • IK_Down
5. Save the file and restart Cyberpunk.

Method 4 – Use a Script

Alternatively, you can also use a script such as AutoHotKey to use the set of keys you want. For example, you can use the following script:
