There have been a lot more attacks targeted at the Port Mafia recently and Dazai can only assume it’s because of Chuuya. People seem to slowly find out what lies dormant in him and naturally, a lot of people either hold a grudge against Arahabaki or otherwise want a piece of its immense power.

Therefore, when Mori calls Dazai into his office one day to tell him that Chuuya hasn’t been responding to calls or messages, it doesn’t really come as a surprise to him. However, it does bother him when Mori assigns him to look for Chuuya.

“I would like you to investigate this issue and, if needed, retrieve Chuuya-kun safely and as soon as possible, Dazai-kun,” Mori tells him and smiles sweetly before resting his head on the bridge he built with his hands.

“Why do I have to? That Slug can defend himself perfectly fine, I’m sure he’ll turn up soon enough, bragging about the new ugly hat he found in Europe or something,” Dazai says and rolls his eyes, the dangerous sparkle in Mori’s eyes not fazing him.

He walks out of the office then, head held high, yet as soon as his back is turned to Mori, the nonchalance on his face turns into a frown and he racks his brain, trying to remember when the last time was he heard from Chuuya.

“Always with the brat…” Dazai mutters and clicks his tongue as he walks straight past his room and towards Chuuya’s apartment. “Still the damsel in distress.”

When Dazai reaches Chuuya’s apartment he finds it empty, which is strange during this time of night. There are no obvious signs of a struggle, yet Dazai notices the way too neatly stacked books in the shelves and the bottles of wine aligned perfectly to hide the fact that one of Chuuya’s favourite ones is missing. Upon further investigation, Dazai finds shards of glass from the broken bottle in the container behind the house and one of Chuuya’s gloves on the floor.

The assailant clearly put great care into making it look like Chuuya left willingly and Dazai knits his brows in confusion. If he were to make an assault on Chuuya, one of the most dangerous ability users out there, he’d use the element of surprise; what benefit would he gain from luring him away until Chuuya’s fully aware of what’s happening and ready to fight back?

Dazai’s eyes widen in realisation as the pieces slot together in his mind and the book he’s been studying slips out of his hands, landing on the floor with a dull thud.

They don’t want to fight him, they want to use him.

When Dazai arrives at the abandoned warehouse, far off from Yokohama’s centre, the metallic, sweet stench of blood fills his nose and he wants to retch.

He stifles it and keeps on walking instead, straining his ears until he can make out the faint sound of people talking and metal clinking. All things considered, it’s not looking good and Dazai can’t deny the fact any longer that Chuuya most probably managed to get himself into some kind of trouble.

When he walks around a corner, he halts abruptly and holds his breath. In the room to his right is a man, standing with his back turned to him and his bright blue hair tumbling down his shoulder in silky waves. He laughs coldly before barking, “As if you could survive that long.”

Dazai tries getting a bit closer to the doorway and peeks around the corner, his eyes widening in horror when he spots Chuuya in a heap on the ground, bound by shackles at his wrists holding him upright. Blood oozes from every visible part of his skin and Dazai’s eyes scan over him, trying to assess the damage. Besides the obvious physical injuries of multiple, serious-looking cuts and bruises, he finds clear mental torment in the way Chuuya flinches at the laughter and telltale signs of having used Corruption; dark red, bleeding gashes tarnishing his body.

Chuuya doesn’t seem to be in a state of Corruption right now, though, his head hanging low as clots of blood keep dripping from his lips. A wheeze accompanies every breath and he’s struggling to keep his eyes open, spitting blood on the floor as coughs start racking his body. What the hell did he do to him?

Just then, Chuuya lifts his head and glares at the other man, his arms trembling with exhaustion. “I’ll destroy you all,” he spits furiously but Dazai sees the pain flit across his face as he speaks and winces at the movement.

The blue-haired man clicks his tongue, reprimanding him, and takes a step towards Chuuya. He waves something that looks suspiciously like a remote in his hands and a smirk contorts his face as he says, “We’ll see about that, A5158.”

Before he gets the chance to press the button, Dazai darts forward and snatches the remote out of his hands, ducking away when he swivels around in anger. “Chuuya!” Dazai shouts and Chuuya’s head jolts up, his mouth falling open in surprise.

“Dazai…?”

“Chuuya,” Dazai repeats, quieter, taken aback at the amount of fear in Chuuya’s blue eyes and the deep purple bruises on his face he couldn’t see from afar. “That’s not a good look, Chibi,” he adds and forces a teasing tone, though it sounds fake even to his ears.

“Chuuya, Chuuya, what the hell are you on about! This is A5158, the monster that obliterated countless cities, the abomination that kills without mercy or aim, that murdered my beloved brother in cold blood.”

Slowly, Dazai turns around to face the man the voice belongs to, his brown eyes boring into light grey ones. “What did you do to him?” His voice is low and quiet and his body quivers with rage underneath his carefully constructed mask of calm, yet the man merely smirks at him.

“You seem to care an awful lot about a thing with no feelings,” he comments off-handedly and Dazai dashes forward in a flash, gripping his neck with ease.

He leans in closer and tightens his grip, before whispering menacingly, “I won’t ask a second time.”

Behind him, Chuuya coughs and retches and Dazai’s stomach jolts at the sound. “I did what needs to be done,” the man answers and pushes Dazai off him, his long, white coat brushing against his arm. “Arahabaki needs to pay, needs to die for its sins. I tried playing nice by luring it out of its pathetic shell, but unfortunately, extraction didn’t work, and I had no other choice but to kill its vessel, too.” He points towards Chuuya behind him. “Which happens to be this pitiful thing.”

Hot, red anger flares up inside Dazai’s stomach and a low growl escapes him as he reaches for the gun he took from Chuuya’s apartment (just in case) and grips the man’s neck again, digging his fingers into the skin. “Just for the record,” he says as he leans in and mania sparkles in his eyes. He cocks the gun and points it at his chest. “He’s not A5158. He’s Nakahara Chuuya, he’s my partner. And he’s human.”

The man merely huffs and grits his teeth, trying to slip out of Dazai’s grasp before he can pull the trigger–but Dazai’s aim has always been impeccable and when the first gunshot rings through the air, he drops to his knees, eyes widened in shock as the life leaves his body. Three more gunshots follow the first one, but those aren’t really necessary, Dazai just feels like one isn’t enough for the rage twitching in his fingers.

His hand shakes and it takes him a moment to regain his composure. When his mind becomes less hazy and he looks at the corpse in front of him, he loosens his grip on the gun and lets it drop to the floor before turning on his heels and rushing towards Chuuya. He immediately starts working on freeing him of the chains, avoiding Chuuya’s eyes as best as he can. “Tsk. What kind of handcuffs are these?” Dazai grumbles quietly when they won’t immediately come loose.

“Some…kind…of…ability magnet, I…think,” Chuuya wheezes and nods towards the remote still lying on the ground. “He forced…me…into…into Corruption…thought he could…separate me from…it…I think…” Chuuya laughs then and it sounds hollow and coarse before it turns into a coughing fit and Dazai has to use every last bit of willpower not to tug at the shackles to free him.

When he finally manages to pick the lock, Chuuya sinks to the floor immediately, his weakened limbs tangling as he groans in agony. Without thinking twice, Dazai slips his arms under Chuuya’s limp body and lifts him up, thanking their past training sessions for the muscles he built up. “Up you go. Let’s get out of here, Chibi.”

Chuuya blinks up at him dazedly, blood still dripping from his lips and leaving a trail on his jaw. “For your…information…I didn’t…didn’t need your…help…I had that…asshole…covered…”

“Sure you did,” Dazai replies and nods, chuckling softly when Chuuya tries to glare at him but ends up looking like an angry baby kitten.

“Dazai,” Chuuya starts again, his grip on his shoulder tightening just the slightest bit as he looks up at him with surprisingly bright blue eyes. “Thanks for…calling…me human.”

A lump forms in Dazai’s throat and he chokes up, finding himself unable to reply as his heart sinks at the genuine gratitude in Chuuya’s voice for something that should be taken for granted; he’s spared from having to answer, though, when Chuuya’s eyes slowly slide shut and he passes out, going limp in his arms.

While Dazai carries him back to his apartment, he can’t stop thinking about how Chuuya has to pay an awfully unfair price for something he can’t help.

The night Dazai leaves the Port Mafia, the decision doesn’t come suddenly.

In fact, he’s been thinking about it for months and each time Chuuya had been in danger because of using Corruption, the thought grew stronger in the back of his mind. Feelings he never knew he had, and rather wouldn’t have now, started building in his chest; guilt gnawing at him every time Corruption was the only way out and he was left carrying an injured Chuuya back home, a fluttering sensation in his stomach every time Chuuya’s laughter filled the room and his voice called his name.

Dazai leaves his room and locks the door behind him, his mind set on vanishing without a trace, yet somehow he finds himself on Chuuya’s doorstep. Without really planning to, his hand knocks on the wooden door, the familiar three-time knock breaking him out of his trance.

“Come in, Shithead, door’s open,” Chuuya’s voice comes through the door and Dazai hesitates, his fingers hovering above the doorknob for a beat, before he takes a deep breath and enters, a grin plastered on his face.

“Chuu~ya, what a surprise to find you here,” he greets and walks over to him, “though it’s not surprising at all to see you drinking. Again.” He throws a pointed look at the glass of wine currently in Chuuya’s hand but Chuuya merely scoffs, glancing at him through his lashes while he takes a long sip from his wine.

“Firstly, my drinking habits are none of your business. Secondly, nothing of that should surprise you. After all, it’s you who turned up at my apartment in the middle of night like the fucking creep you are.”

Dazai laughs, genuine laughter for the last time in a long while probably, and he sits down next to Chuuya at his makeshift bar. “True, true…” He pauses, considering briefly, before turning around and facing Chuuya straight-on. “Chuuya,” he starts and Chuuya turns, too, the serious tone of his voice apparently intriguing him. “Do you ever think about leaving? The Port Mafia?”

Chuuya furrows his brows and screws his nose in confusion and Dazai thinks it’s strangely endearing. “What brought this on, Mackerel?”

“Don’t you sometimes think it would be better? A life far away from all this…darkness?”

Intense blue eyes scan his face, searching for the reason for this unexpected visit, and the far more bizarre topic, and Dazai suppresses the urge to smile at his naiveness; he has perfected his skill of masking his emotions over the years and Chuuya won’t ever be able to see anything on his face he doesn’t want him to see.

After a while, Chuuya gives up the search and averts his gaze, taking another sip before replying, “You brought me to the Mafia. I swore loyalty to Mori, how could I ever quit?”

Chuuya says it like it’s the most obvious thing ever, like Dazai’s the unreasonable one here, and Dazai feels like he’s been punched straight to the chest. It’s all his fault. More so than he ever thought, he’s the one who brought this onto Chuuya. As long as he’s around, Chuuya will always be forced to use Corruption over and over again, damaging his body further with each time while a mindless monster rages within. The least he can do is leave, stripping Mori from the possibility of using Chuuya as a weapon, and if his mind hadn’t already been set before coming here, it would have been now.

“I thought as much, Chibi,” Dazai replies and gets up from his seat. He fixes his eyes on Chuuya’s deeply expressive face, indulging himself as he lets his gaze trail over the fiery orange hair framing his face and the ridiculous choker around his neck, and he swallows, trying to etch the image into his mind lest he forgets.

He breaks away and turns around, walking towards the door with long strides. Before he can open it, however, Chuuya calls after him, seemingly having recovered from his state of confusion, “Oi, Dazai. What was all that about?”

“Don’t worry about it, Chuuya,” Dazai mumbles and closes his eyes, the cool metal of the doorknob feeling icy on his skin. “I just wanted to be sure.”

When he finally opens the door and slips out into the night, he can feel Chuuya’s inquiring eyes boring into the back of his head. The door falls shut behind him and Dazai gulps, knowing he won’t ever be able to face Chuuya again after tonight.

If Chuuya has to pay a price for something that’s not even his fault, the least Dazai can do is pay his own for something that most definitely is, and if that means being apart from Chuuya then so be it; somehow, Dazai would do anything to keep Chuuya safe these days.
