I bought a Toshiba MK4026GAX to go with my newly purchased CTO Thinkpad. However, once it was installed, I was greeted with a screen informing me that the hard drive needed a firmware upgrade (Error 2010). Has anyone ever experienced this before? It seems somewhat weird that a hard drive would need a firmware upgrade… Anyways, I tried to do the firmware upgrade ( http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-41008 ), but it wouldn’t let me continue stating that my firmware was already up to date. (Even though the firmware versions differed and mine was a previous version.)
Anyways, I took it to the local IBM center and after inserting a known working HD, they determined that the motherboard was at fault. It just seems a bit weird that a newly shipped system (less than a week old), would have a faullty motherboard (especially since this is from IBM). Any ideas? Have you gotten a CTO Thinkpad to work with this particular HD? Thanks in advance!

goh

read this thread over at forums.thinkpad.com, it explain the issue.

edit: If i read correctly, to do the firmware upgrade properly you need to use a floopy drive…. but I could be mistaken.

I had no idea they used a sata => pata bridge for the T43. That doesnt make any damned sense at all.

I am a wee bit concerned about the hard drive I ordered for my thinkpad… it is one of the models they have on there site, but I suspect the ol firmware will be wrong. and then I will have to figure out how to update it. I wonder if I can update it in my desktop, and the put it in the laptop, since I think I have a floopy drive lying around somewhere I could put into my desktop…

The woes of doing things…

It doesn’t make much sense to me either on the face of it. I am guessing that the board may have been designed that way to make the transition from ATA to SATA easier when SATA really takes off in notebooks. Remove the bridge chip, run the traces to the physical interface, and that’s all as far as design changes. I’m sure IBM/Lenovo already has SATA boards already designed and ready to be manufactured on short notice…

Edit: This is yet another reason to recommend the T42 over the T43, at least for now.

Yeah, thats probably what they were going to do. They should have just went with SATA drives from the start tho. Its not like they werent available.

I agree that it would have been much cooler to go with the SATA drives. Hot swaping and easy connections to desktop systems are two things that I am looking forward to.

I am speculating here, but I believe that IBM/Lenovo wanted to keep using the same types of HDD across all the T4x series machines as long as possible. This would eliminate the need to acquire and keep more types of items in inventory, and would reduce the chances of a mistake if a user called in for a replacement disk.

I can see it now. A T42 owner calls in with a crashed HDD, and Lenovo sends him a T43 SATA drive. Considering the sheer number of sub FRUs in the parts matrix, I doubt it was for that reason that they did it. I’m guessing that SATA drive availability wasnt what they wanted it to be when they made the board design decision.

That’s probably it. Even now I don’t know that there are a lot of 2.5″ SATA drives on the market. However, I haven’t really kept up with news on HDDs, so I could be wrong.

quote:

I’m guessing that SATA drive availability wasnt what they wanted it to be when they made the board design decision.

I just gave up, myself. The 100gb seagate I have in there works fine enough, and two beeps and hitting ‘escape’ on startup doesn’t really bother me much. *GRIN*

While not a TCO thinkpad, one of our new T43Ps experienced the same issue with an older drive from a T41P. Performing the firmware update got rid of the 2010 error at bootup.

DT

Ok, at the risk of being flamed, has anyone come up with a simple solution for the 2010 error?

_________________ |

IBM T43 Error 2010
How do i get rid of the «Error 2010» warning on my IBM T43 laptop? It appears everytime i boot the machine and i always press the Escape key to continue. The rest is ok except for the error message at startup. Any ideas on how i can get rid of this irritating warning?

Re: IBM T43 Error 2010
This error is displayed when the system disk is replaced by a one which is not a Thinkpad option crafted for that specific model of IBM laptop. Thus, the BIOS is expected to give a ‘Error 2010‘ warning on every system boot or reboot. Though with the help of the Esc key you may ignore it, but it is considered to be not reliable. Also the performance of the system is affected.

Re: IBM T43 Error 2010
Solution for this error which you are getting on your IBM:
1. First you need to update the hard drive firmware with the latest one. You need to download the updated hard drive firmware, and then you can apply to the hard drive.
2. You can also replace the hard drive with the best supported one with the system being used.Try with this solution and i can be sure that it definitely remove this error completely.
