Dell iDRAC Timeout due to Java proxy automatic configuration

The error I experienced

When connecting to iDRAC , you may experience a timeout:

  • using proxy configured via pac script
  • which is downloaded over HTTPS
  • using the Java plugin (or using Native, but a non Internet Explorer browser where ActiveX is unsupported – it will revert to Java)

It hangs for about 60 seconds in the state Verifying Application

When you click the “Launch Console” link/button in the iDRAC web interface, a token is generated and stored in the .jnlp file you subsequently download. This allows you to open the .jnlp in the javaws client without re-authenticating with the iDRAC.

This token is valid for about 90 seconds, before it expires.

  • you are unable to answer the (many many) security prompts AND
  • wait for the application (.jar files etc) to be downloaded AND
  • for the connection verified (e.g. Certificates validated),

within 90 seconds, the token will expire and you will need to connect again. You will see an error such as

The session has timed out waiting for verification of the certificate. All the connections will be closed

Login failed with an access denied error

Java logs (showing connection attempt)

Note 15 seconds delay between attempting to connect to ocsp.verisign.com and the timeout being reached. This occurred several times before it eventually gave up and proceeded anyway

Observations/Learnings

  • Java by default uses the “browser settings” for proxy config
  • If using a proxy automatic configuration (pac) script, it will
  • Download the script
  • Evaluate the proxy settings
  • When downloading the proxy script over HTTPS, it evaluates the cert. As the server hosting the proxy script is generated using a non-public CA, whose certs aren’t automatically distributed.
  • If Java mixed code signing verification is enabled, it attempts to connect to ocsp.verisign.com:80 to verify the certificate signature.
  • At this stage, because the proxy script hasn’t yet been downloaded, it is unable to figure out how to connect to verisign, so it attempts a direct connection.
  • After multiple connection attempts, this eventually (after

60 seconds) times out

  • The proxy automatic configuration script is now downloaded, and the Dell iDRAC certificate signature is verified using the appropriate proxy path defined in the .pac file.
  • How to work around the fault

    • Disable mixed code signing verification in Java options
    • Hard set the proxy either in Global Internet Options (e.g. Internet Explorer) or in the Java options
    • Host the pac script on a server accessible using HTTP (not secured)
    • Allow direct internet access from your client system to ocsp.verisign.com
    • Newer Dell iDRACs support HTML5 — use this
    • Try using the native iDRAC console plugin with Internet Explore (ActiveX) — this also has security implications.

    None of these actually resolve the underlying Java client fault that it requires a pac file to be applied so that it can retrieve the pac file.

    Old Java 7 #24

    It appears that the current versions of java 7 are not able to work with idrac6. It may be necessary to specify a verison of java7 in the dockerfile that is known to work. I have gotten mine working with 7_80, and apperently 7_79 also works.

    The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:

    Interesting, will take a look. Thanks for the tip!

    @deef0000dragon1 @z3dm4n Do you already have trouble building the image? The current Java version in the image is 1.7.0_95, there is no other version available in the OpenJDK repo for Ubuntu 16.04. 18.04 only has 1.8.0 and upward, which won’t work anyway.

    I just built the image locally and the latest version available worked with no issues.

    Hi Dominik,
    image works smoothly, but connection to the remote console fails after some seconds. At first the connection is successful. After connecting via WebUI or VNC, the connection fails with «Login failed with access denied error.» Hence I suspected, that @deef0000dragon1 experienced a similar issue as I did.
    As there is no PPA archive where we could get prehistoric OpenJDK packages from, I am not sure how to address this, if this is caused by newer versions of this package.

    @z3dm4n Interesting, I couldn’t reproduce that issue yet. Using domistyle/idrac6:latest and building the image fresh both work just fine for a longer period.

    Does the same thing happen when you run the Java console on another machine?

    I’ll re-check this issue on another server once I have time for this.

    To specify the «not able to work with idrac6» bit, I was able to get the container started, and was easily able to get into the container. Unfortunately, The only thing that I would be greeted by once I was in was a pair of java notification boxes. One saying connecting , and the other saying connection failed .

    This was the same issue that I was encountering with a local version of java. Downgrading to 7_80 allowed me to access the console.

    It might be possible to get the required jre it from https://snapshot.debian.org/package/openjdk-7/
    specifically here ? but I wouldnt know for sure.

    I ran into the same issue trying to connect to an iDRAC 6 session: the connection fails with «Login failed with access denied error.»

    I had the same issue on windows as well using newer java 7. I was able to get this working by installing the Java JDK 7_80 and making it default inside the image. Have to commit the image which increases the size a bit but it works for me. Great container, thank you.

    iDRAC 7 launch Virtual Console fails with access denied error

    whenever I try to launch the idrac video console 7, it fails with an «Access denied» error it’s weird because I’m connected to the idrac as superuser. I use JDK 1.6. I tried through different browsers and I still get the same error.

    Found the same problem after an update of the Firmware to iDRAC.

    To address I created a new user account and permissions of base. Seems «Access Virtual Console» even when checked permissions do not actually post update.

    If :

    • you are unable to answer the (many many) security prompts AND
    • wait for the application (.jar files etc) to be downloaded AND
    • for the connection verified (e.g. Certificates validated),

    within 90 seconds, the token will expire and you will need to connect again. You will see an error such as

    The session has timed out waiting for verification of the certificate. All the connections will be closed

    Or

    • After multiple connection attempts, this eventually (after ~60 seconds) times out
    • The proxy automatic configuration script is now downloaded, and the Dell iDRAC certificate signature is verified using the appropriate proxy path defined in the .pac file.

    How to work around the fault

    @deefdragon

    It appears that the current versions of java 7 are not able to work with idrac6. It may be necessary to specify a verison of java7 in the dockerfile that is known to work. I have gotten mine working with 7_80, and apperently 7_79 also works.

    @DomiStyle

    Interesting, will take a look. Thanks for the tip!

    @z3dm4n

    @DomiStyle

    @z3dm4n

    Hi Dominik,
    image works smoothly, but connection to the remote console fails after some seconds.

    @DomiStyle

    @z3dm4n Interesting, I couldn’t reproduce that issue yet. Using domistyle/idrac6:latest and building the image fresh both work just fine for a longer period.

    Does the same thing happen when you run the Java console on another machine?

    @z3dm4n

    I’ll re-check this issue on another server once I have time for this.

    @deefdragon

    To specify the «not able to work with idrac6» bit, I was able to get the container started, and was easily able to get into the container. Unfortunately, The only thing that I would be greeted by once I was in was a pair of java notification boxes. One saying connecting, and the other saying connection failed.

    This was the same issue that I was encountering with a local version of java. Downgrading to 7_80 allowed me to access the console.

    It might be possible to get the required jre it from https://snapshot.debian.org/package/openjdk-7/
    specifically here ? but I wouldnt know for sure.

    @ipv6freely

    I ran into the same issue trying to connect to an iDRAC 6 session: the connection fails with «Login failed with access denied error.»

    @ptmorris1

    I had the same issue on windows as well using newer java 7. I was able to get this working by installing the Java JDK 7_80 and making it default inside the image. Have to commit the image which increases the size a bit but it works for me. Great container, thank you.
