I’ve just had a very similar issue when I did an sudo apt autoremove
and it failed attempting to install kernel files for a kernel I don’t have. My uname -a
shows I’m using kernel version 5.0.0-20 and running ls -al /boot
shows only this and the 5.0.0-17 kernel are installed. However, apt
suddenly turned up errors and attempted to install files in my /boot
for old kernels including 5.0.0-15, 4.18.0-17, 4.13.0-45. Which is weird.
So I figure that somehow they’ve altered the logic for dkms
(or something related to initramfs
) and it checks some other locations to see if kernels might be installed and then does updates on those kernels and replaces missing files.
I’m not sure exactly what fixed it but I did:
sudo apt purge *5.0.0-15* *4.18.0-17* *4.13.0-45*
#check carefully that it's not removing anything you need though, this is a hammer to crack a nut
ls -al /lib/modules
# which revealed lots of old module folders that I removed with ...
sudo rm -rf /lib/modules/4.*
# and similarly for the 5.0.0-15 modules
Then I did:
ls -al /usr/src/
# which again showed old source trees that I pruned with
sudo rm -rf sudo rm -rf /usr/src/linux-headers-4.*
Then I did:
locate -e 4.13.0
# which found old kernel files in
ls -al /var/lib/initramfs-tools/
# so I removed with
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/initramfs-tools/4*
I have problems with a very tight /boot
folder for historical reasons and so removed old kernel files with:
sudo rm -i /boot/**4*
# and similar for all but my current and next oldest kernels
# -i is interactive mode so you have to answer 'y' to remove
# that's a really useful safety check, 'sudo rm' is a dangerous tool!
Finally I ran:
sudo apt -f install
Which finished as expected and returned the system to the expected state without attempting to install extraneous kernels. I did not test as I went along so can not guarantee which part fixed it, but it was not harmful to clear those old files out AFAICT.
Aside, checking my /var/log/apt/history.log
file, this appears to be the beginning of this particular error:

Ошибка initramfs при установке / обновлении
У меня возникла ошибка при обновлении или запуске любого apt Команда на неделю или около того. Обновление до LTS 18.04 не разрешило его и не удалило все старые ядра. Космос тоже не проблема.
Попытка переустановить initramfs не работает Я получаю ошибку:
У кого-нибудь есть идеи относительно того, что я могу сделать?
14 ответов
Запуск автоматического удаления и очистки работал в моей ситуации.
apt-get auto-remove && apt-get clean && apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

Well, no, that would not be better. And, arr, crap, yes, it would have that issue; that reinstall triggers the very same postinst. And as far as I can quickly find you can’t in fact skip that postinst either. Typically apt.
It was in any case not likely and especially given your equal CRC32. Err, arr, let me think.

Plymouth is the splash screen, and it fails to install onto the initramfs. But what type exactly.
It’s going to be the set -e in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/plymouth that has the script exit after «something else» bugs out but unfortunately we don’t get t see what said something else in fact is, making this hard to pin down non-locally.
Are you at all script-savvy? If I’d have had this issue I’d start instrumenting /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/plymouth by e.g. putting «echo 1» (and 2,3,4, . so on) statements before every if, for and case statement to see where it fails.

Can anyone help me? I have two other nodes but do not want to proceed until this is working.
Thanks

OK additional information: My other two nodes both updated without error. The node that will not finish the upgrade command, we installed PMG from packages and so it is not exactly the same as the two on-site nodes, see below:

initramfs-tools error
Post by FKC » Sat Aug 04, 2018 6:16 pm
Hello everyone!
I’m using mint 19 for some weeks by now and recently an error is occurring whenever I install or uninstall a package:
E: initramfs-tools: installed initramfs-tools package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1
Does anyone know how to fix this?

As I suspected, your boot partition is rather full. You would need to remove some of the older unused kernels from your system. Open Update Manager > View > Linux kernels. Click on 4.15.0-20 and then on the remove button. Repeat this for 4.15.0-24. Keep 4.15.0-29 to have one in reserve. This should free some space in your /boot.
Next, try installing the package you wanted to install before and see if it works now.

[SOLVED]initramfs-tools and dpkg error while installing Broadcom driver
Post by scusa » Tue Nov 24, 2020 3:34 am
Apologies if I have chosen the wrong section to post this query, as you can see, I am very new to Linux environment and the Linux Mint forums. I finally made the jump to Linux Mint from Windows 10 about 3 weeks back and I regret not having done it earlier. All was good and I was learning with usage till last night when I got a prompt from ‘Update Centre’ and upgraded some components including the Kernel. The Broadcom wireless drivers stopped working this morning(first boot after upgrade) and I tried everything to fix it but to no avail.
1) During graphical install of BCM43142 using ‘ Driver Manager‘, I run into this every time:
pk-client-error-quark: Error while installing package: installed bcmwl-kernel-source package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10 (313)
2) Tried running: dpkg —configure -a
5) Finally, I tried installing initramfs-tools itself.
Any help in resolving the issue will be highly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time out to go through the issue I posted.
P.S: Tried dpkg —configure -a —force-depends as well, not fixing the issue.

Hi Sleeper12, thank you very much for replying. I did run it with sudo, just forgot to mention that here. BTW, managed to solve it. Turns out that the issue was wrt free space available in /boot partition. The free space available was autoremove and autoclean:
«sudo apt purge linux-headers-* linux-headers-*-generic linux-image-*-generic linux-image-extra-*-generic linux-signed-image-*-generic» — where * is the version number. So, if the kernel is 5.4.0-26, then the command will look like- sudo apt purge linux-headers-5.4.0-26 linux-headers-5.4.0-26-generic linux-image-5.4.0-26-generic linux-image-extra-5.4.0-26-generic linux-signed-image-5.4.0-26-generic
I know it’s not a good idea to tamper with it manually, but it was the only way I could free up some space and solve the issue. All dpkg and initramfs-tools related issues resolved after this. However, «pk-client-error-quark: Error while installing package: installed bcmwl-kernel-source package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10 (313)» this error continued during graphical install. Here’s what I did: —
(a) sudo apt purge *broadcom*
(b) sudo apt purge *bcmwl*
(c) sudo apt install broadcom-sta-dkms
(d) Restart system
Solved the issue of BCM43142 wireless adapter not functioning in my Mint system.

This is not a proxmox image installation, it is a package installation running on a linode VM.
Can anyone help me? I have two other nodes but do not want to proceed until this is working.
Thanks
Bruce
OK additional information: My other two nodes both updated without error. The node that will not finish the upgrade command, we installed PMG from packages and so it is not exactly the same as the two on-site nodes, see below:
Installed from Proxmox image:
master node : Kernel Version Linux 5.15.53-1-pve #1 SMP PVE 5.15.53-1 (Fri, 26 Aug 2022 16:53:52 +0200)
slave node 1 : Kernel Version Linux 5.15.53-1-pve #1 SMP PVE 5.15.53-1 (Fri, 26 Aug 2022 16:53:52 +0200)
Installed from Packages:
Kernel Version Linux 5.13.19-6-pve #1 SMP PVE 5.13.19-15 (Tue, 29 Mar 2022 15:59:50 +0200)
The PVE 5.13.19-15 Version is installed on a Linode VM out on the internet, but I don’t think that is the problem. The problems seems to be proxmox-boot-tool: not found or run-parts: /etc/initramfs/post-update.d//proxmox-boot-sync exited with return code 127. The nodes are all upgraded now, and they are all showing synched and running. I am afraid that this version will not be able to upgrade further until I get this failure corrected. I don’t really know where to look.
Thanks
Bruce

Hi,
the pve-kernel-helper
package contains the proxmox-boot-tool
binary. Please ensure that it is installed correctly. It is a dependency of the proxmox-mailgateway
package. You might want to install that to make sure all dependencies for Proxmox Mail Gateway are pulled in automatically.

Problem resolved. Installed pve-kernel-helper and upgrade completed cleanly. Many thanks.

A few weeks prior to Buster went stable I did a clean lvm install onto a new ssd. /home and all that stayed on the spinning rust on /DATA I have read the info on Planet Debian about the recent point release and also saw the caution for grub2 that was mentioned on Siduction. (I have an old atom netbook on debian sid running wayland and sway.)
Quiet year on Debian stable. The most recent upgrade spit out

I did do journalctl —vacuum-size=0.6G and apt autolclean — all via sudo. after this happened.
I could review how to scroll backwards in tmux to get the original error message.
Pretty dull repos and not utilizing backports much. Virtuabox and Spideroak. I also use the binary from expressvpn.

I notice you do not have a lot of space in /boot/ which might be a cause as my initrd.img files are 62Mb (which are in /boot/ and maybe there is not enough room to put another one there. You could try removing your oldest kernel(s) to see if that clears it up.

Not always. It depend whether at least one kernel is eligible for auto-removal, i.e. there are at least 3 kernels installed.
I agree with Dai_trying : it is better to explain why the problem happens and what must be done to correct it (by any means, including but not limited to autoremove) than just throwing a «magic» command without any explanation.

And then some users would remove the wrong kernel.
Users asking for help may do it to learn, others just want their system to work.
A user who was interested in learning would perhaps make an effort and find one of the many threads.
A search on Google for «stdout: No space left on device» gave me 2.000.000 hits…
Assuming that the user just wanted a quick fix was not all that far fetched.

Why would they remove the wrong kernel ?
Hallvor wrote:Users asking for help may do it to learn, others just want their system to work.
Fine, I am not here for the latter. AFAIK this forum is not a help desk.

So what ? The first answers seem to address the issue (even though for Ubuntu). Add more keywords such as «Debian» and «initramfs» if you want more specific answers.

Fine. Then why did you respond to this thread with the «help desk» question? Why not just ignore it and move on?
This forum is what the users make it, and the OP is certainly no help vampire, so I don’t see the problem; and if you do see a problem with me replying, it wouldn’t be any of your business anyway.
So what?
The point is that the OP could have found the answer himself in a few seconds, and telling him to make a Google search makes more sense than trying to school him about Debian.

What «help desk» question ?
Hallvor wrote:if you do see a problem with me replying, it wouldn’t be any of your business anyway.
I see a problem in your reply claiming that «apt autoremove fixes the problem». It fixed the problem for you, but that does not mean that it fixes the problem for every one in every case. In a recent similar thread, it did not fix the problem.
Whether you like it or not, what you post in a public forum is everyone’s business. If I disagree with what you say, I’ll say it.
Hallvor wrote:The point is that the OP could have found the answer himself in a few seconds
Thanks for clarifying, I did not understand it that way.
Hallvor wrote:telling him to make a Google search makes more sense than trying to school him about Debian.
Whatever it means, I was not trying to «school him about Debian».

Take a wild guess.
I see a problem in your reply claiming that «apt autoremove fixes the problem».
The worst case scenario is that it won’t work. The worst case scenario if the OP slips up while manually deleting kernels is much more severe.
As for your thread, that was a dist-upgrade, not this specific point upgrade. There is no comparison.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see of the OP replies to see if it works or not.
Whether you like it or not, what you post in a public forum is everyone’s business. If I disagree with what you say, I’ll say it.
Did I post bad advice? No. So STFU.

1. apt autoremove fixed the problem. thanks. /boot is presently at 60% from 87% So if the kernel is 27% that would have taken it up too much. Might fiddle with resizing /boot some day. I guess the kernels are getting bigger.
I do use apt autoremove a bit in sid, but I always check very closely before doing so. This is something that I had not seen since 2016 when I started this new computer with stretch testing. Nor in Siduction or #! on on the amdC-50 — rest in peace.
No, not a vampire. I am more of a small fish in a small pond, I reply to posts ( I did anyway) in the SparkyLinux forum and ask the occasional rare question in Siduction for my wayland sway.
Again thanks.

very true, explanations are quite helpful in making the readers understand how to prevent such issues if they come across them. I have always found it quite useful to search these forums and learn from explanations.

Issue with initramfs.
Hi, I can not upgrade nor autoremove old kernels due to the issue with initramfs. It keeps returning me the following

Can anyone help mw with this issue? I have encrypred boot partition. I run Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS

pavloos; Yukkie
Not much yet to work with,
Let’s see what we can discover.
Disk space ? — while I would expect the kernel to say so will not hurt to check and see what we have:
And what is the state of the installed kernels:
Code:
uname -r dpkg -l | grep linux-
if the kernel is not happy ,,,,

Re: Issue with initramfs.
pavloos; Hey hey —
Making progress
We have:
iF linux-image-5.13.0-30-generic
inpish release
where the kernel is installed (i) BUT the status (F) is «halF-conf»-igured.How about we start with cleaning up the cruft (rc) where the package has been (r)emoved, but (c)onfig files remain,
Code:
dpkg -l | awk '/^rc/{print $2}' | xargs sudo dpkg -P
Next is to see if the package manager will heal its self — keep this as simple as possible
Code:
sudo apt update sudo apt full-upgrade sudo dpkg --configure -a
see if that latest linux-image-5.13.0-30-generic will complete installation.
while we are poking about:
«iF linux-firmware»
will also require some TLC

pavloos; Oh Boy —
Let’s go deeper.
Looking at «initramfs-tools» :
Code:
apt show initramfs-tools
seems a good candidate that affects installs.
What results with terminal command:
Code:
sudo apt install --reinstall initramfs-tools
a poke to give some guidance

Your filesystem is almost full. Root, home and boot, but the issue is most likely boot. Try removing the 5.11 kernel first:
Code:
sudo dpkg --purge linux-modules-extra-5.11.0-44-generic linux-modules-5.11.0-44-generic linux-image-5.11.0-44-generic
Using the dpkg command here instead of the higher level apt command as apt may insist on installing the 5.13.0-30 kernel first, which will fail.
BTW, if you have a separate home partition, getting 31GB in your root partition is a lot. It may have to do with the large number of snaps you have installed.

Re: Issue with initramfs.
That’s what I see also. Especially for it trying to do a kernel update, trying to generate an intramfs with only 85M free in a limited sized boot partition…
Yes…
initrd.img-<version>-generic, about 66MB
System.map=<version>-generic, about 6MB
vmlinuz-<version>-generic, about 11MB
config-<version<-generic, about 0.25MBThat’s roughly 84MB with just those, after the compression of those files.

Re: Issue with initramfs.
Thank you for your help. The issue was indeed low space on /boot and I managed to fix it with your suggestions.
At first, trying purge 5.11 with the suggested command returned
Code:
pawel@V5-591G:~$ sudo dpkg --purge linux-modules-extra-5.11.0-44-generic linux-modules-5.11.0-44-generic linux-image-5.11.0-44-genericdpkg: error: dpkg frontend lock is locked by another process
But I get rid of it using good old Synaptic.

Re: Issue with initramfs.
The issue is likely to return at the next kernel upgrade. Try and make your /boot partition a bit larger, just a few 100MB extra, although you haven’t much room to shrink the other partitions. Maybe it’s time to remove some junk.
