I am new to Linux but need to be able to connect my work laptop (windows 10 pro) to my desktop
I am trying to get Samba to run but it will not even install from either the Software Manager or Terminal.
The follow error codes are being generated

Any suggestions as how to solve this?

You do not have all the prerequisites installed you are missing samba-common-bin

samba is in the repositories

Installed samba common bin package post installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

I have a RPi4 — 4GB

I can’t get samba working on it which is normally very easy.

Here are some details

  • It’s Buster lite
  • It’s a fresh, updated install
  • All I have installed in OpenJDK 8
  • I’ve gone through the install — always followed this guy’s blog
  • install is simply sudo apt-get install samba samba-common-bin
  • All the above is done logged in as root.

I get the following in while installing

After that, I’m stuck

Any help appreciated.

Re: RPi 4 — Samba installed but service won’t start

OpenJDK8 is not in the Buster repositories, it is OpenJDK11

It’s installed though —

Re: RPi 4 — Samba installed but service won’t start

Re: RPi 4 — Samba installed but service won’t start

true, it does have that in but you can install java8.

Still struggling to get samba working.

Re: RPi 4 — Samba installed but service won’t start

Do you have samba installed and working?

Re: RPi 4 — Samba installed but service won’t start

Are they actually running ?
Try restarting ‘smbd’ & ‘nmbd’

As for the ‘blog’ you followed, you might just as well not create a Samba user and use this share:

It will work just like the one in the blog, but with less lines.
You should also check that ‘map to guest = bad user’ is set in [global]

If ‘smbd’ & ‘nmbd’ are running, you should be able to connect to the share, but you will probably have to navigate to it, seeing as SMBv1 is now turned off.

Re: RPi 4 — Samba installed but service won’t start

well, yes and no.

So, it turns out it was working the whole time. I did not bother checking through windows if it is actually sharing them. When I did I face-palmed.

On my RPi3B+ I see the following

As you can see there is a service called samba and smdb. On the RPi4 there is only smbd.

I’m sure I am not the only one who is using the previously mentioned tutorial so hopefully this thread will help others.

I have new installation of Ubuntu 16.04 on my server, hoping to serve files to a Wetek Core with LibreELEC.

I was having problems with filesharing and made a poor decision to uninstall Samba and reinstall. I installed it by attempting to share a file and it asked if I wanted to install Samba. It gave me the following error after installation failed:

Samba will not install on Mint 20 Ulyana

I am new to Linux but need to be able to connect my work laptop (windows 10 pro) to my desktop

You do not have all the prerequisites installed you are missing samba-common-bin

samba is in the repositories

open terminal

then

this should install everything you need

This hasn’t worked
Samba-common-bin still fails

The error reported is

«dpkg: error processing package samba (—configure):
dependency problems — leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
samba-common-bin
samba
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned error code (1)»

Do you have Synaptic Package Manager installed? if not

If you do it is listed there try and install it that way there just search for samba Synaptic will also tell you if you have any broken packages

Using the LM 19.1 Update Manager, I updated my LM install except I am getting the following error messages when I try to install the Samba package:

Any idea what all this means? . I gather that the NMB service cannot be started for some reason. What are my diagnostic steps here? Where and how should I look for more information? Any help will be greatly appreciated. TIA

I tried systemctl status nmbd.service and got this:

also did:

journalctl -xe and found nothing relevent.

when I try to start it with sudo service nmbd start I get:

job for nmdb.service failed because a timeout was exceeded

The samba daemon/service is running fine.

When I try to install samba on Debian buster like this:

sudo apt install samba

I get this output:

Introduction

Samba is a complex package, because it covers a wide range of use cases and provides lots of different binary packages.

Bugs relating to the samba source package typically fall into one of the following categories:

  1. User cannot connect to (or properly access files on) a remote share from his Ubuntu system. This falls under the category of samba as a client.

  2. Other systems cannot connect to (or properly access files on) an Ubuntu system providing samba shares. This may be an issue with samba as a server.

  3. Install/upgrade failures of the samba packages.

  4. libpam-smbpass specific issues. Sharing a folder from the GUI installs libpam-smbpass, which stacks a PAM module that maintains sync between system and samba passwords. Failure in libpam-smbpass may result in inability to login on the system.

  5. winbind specific issues. Winbind allows to get user/group info from a Windows DC. It is sometimes installed by unsuspecting users as a recommended package from Wine.

Also, it is a very good idea to have a look at the official Samba HOWTO. You will find there not only a how-to, but also common errors.

How to file

First figure out if the bug falls under one of the generic categories:

  1. samba as a client

  2. samba as a server

  3. install/upgrade failure

  4. libpam-smbpass related
  5. winbind related

Samba as a client

Is it a regression ?

Did this use to work properly with a previous release ?

What version of samba packages are used ?

Please give the output of:

dpkg-query -W -f='${Package} ${Version} ${Source} ${Status}n' | grep samba
  1. nautilus (or other GUI client)
  2. smbclient (from the command line)
  3. cifs filesystem mount (from /etc/fstab or a mount command)

To test:

  1. install the samba-client package
  2. try to connect to the remote system from the command line:
smbclient //remote_system/share_name

If the share requires a specific username/password, try using the «-U» parameter (for example, use «-U ntdomain\user»).

If a cifs mount is used

In that case please also provide:

  • the content of the file /etc/fstab, or the command line used to mount the remote share if the share is manually mounted.

  • the content of the file /proc/fs/cifs/DebugData

What is the remote server ?

In all cases, please include the output of the following smbclient command:

smbclient -L //remote_system

This should give us the remote server version. Also include on what kind of machine the share is located (Windows 2003 Server, Ubuntu 8.04, NAS box model…)

Samba as a server

Is it a regression ?

Did this use to work properly with a previous release ?

What version of samba packages are used ?

Please give the output of:

dpkg-query -W -f='${Package} ${Version} ${Source} ${Status}n' | grep samba

Which clients are failing to connect?

Include the operating system (Windows, Ubuntu) and version (XP, Vista, 8.04) of the client systems failing to connect to the share.

What is the error message produced on the client?

Other information to include

  • the content of the /etc/samba/smb.conf file

  • log files found in /var/log/samba/

  • the output of the smbclient -L //server/

  • the output of testparm -s

Install/upgrade failure

Status of samba packages on the system

Please give the output of:

dpkg-query -W -f='${Package} ${Version} ${Source} ${Status}n' | grep samba

Other information to include

  • apt and dpkg log files: /var/log/dpkg.log and /var/log/apt/term.log.

  • /etc/samba/smb.conf (or absence thereof)

In the case of an upgrade was there a prompt for a modified configuration file? If so what steps were taken.

How to Triage

Identify if the bug falls in one of the generic categories above. If so make sure that the relevant information is available. If not ask for it using one of the stock replies.

Samba as a client

If nautilus fails to connect but smbclient can successfully connect, the bug is related to nautilus. Mark the samba task Invalid and open a new task for nautilus.

If both nautilus and smbclient can not connect, the bug is related to samba.

If cifs cannot connect the bug might be related to CIFS kernelspace (package linux) or userspace (package samba). In doubt, leave it in samba.

Non-bugs

Install/upgrade failure due to missing /etc/samba/smb.conf file

How to recognize it

This is a case of install/upgrade failure that results in the following error message (potentially translated):

package samba-common <version> failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

The DpkgTerminalLog.gz (or /var/log/apt/term.log) contains the following message:

Not replacing deleted config file /etc/samba/smb.conf
chmod: cannot access `/etc/samba/smb.conf': No such file or directory

The user should not be able to provide any /etc/samba/smb.conf file, since it is missing.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

It looks like you manually removed /etc/samba/smb.conf before reinstalling/upgrading samba packages. Configuration files are special files that should be purged by running "apt-get purge", not manually removed.

You can recover from this situation by restoring /etc/samba/smb.conf and restart pending package configuration:
$ sudo cp /usr/share/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

Alternatively, you can purge samba-common completely and attempt the install/upgrade again:
$ sudo apt-get purge samba-common

This bug will be marked as Invalid: please reopen it if the above steps do not resolve the situation for you. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New". Thanks again!

Close the bug report as Invalid.

While I would like to ignore the error as instructed (Please ignore the following error), it leaves me with not fully installed package. Never mind that, I believe this can be fixed somehow.

The problem is that the package is not working. By googling and manually running (as a root)

$ /usr/sbin/nmbd -S -d 1

I got relevant information

mkdir failed on directory /var/log/samba/cores: No such file or directory
Failed to create /var/log/samba/cores for user 0 with mode 0700
Unable to setup corepath for nmbd: No such file or directory
ERROR: Can't log to stdout (-S) unless daemon is in foreground (-F) or interactive (-i)

The /var/log/samba doesn’t exist. So I created it and tried again, now with -i and got another relevant info

nmbd version 4.9.5-Debian started.
Copyright Andrew Tridgell and the Samba Team 1992-2018
mkdir failed on directory /var/lib/samba/private/msg.sock: No such file or directory

And again, the folder /var/lib/samba/private doesn’t exist. At this point I questioned myself whether manually creating this folder is the right direction, as /var/lib might be mounted on some sort of temporary storage.

So basically I have two questions

  • Are we (admins) supposed to manually patch installations (of well known, widely used software)?
  • What did I do wrong that I am not able to install samba as every other person (I have Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster) (4.19.0-8-amd64))

RPi 4 — Samba installed but service won’t start

Hi folks,

I have a RPi4 — 4GB

I can’t get samba working on it which is normally very easy.

Here are some details

  • It’s Buster lite
  • It’s a fresh, updated install
  • All I have installed in OpenJDK 8
  • I’ve gone through the install — always followed this guy’s blog
  • install is simply sudo apt-get install samba samba-common-bin
  • All the above is done logged in as root.

I get the following in while installing

Code: Select all

Setting up libcephfs2:armhf (12.2.11+dfsg1-2.1+rpi1) ...
Setting up libgfapi0:armhf (5.5-3) ...
Setting up samba-common-bin (2:4.9.5+dfsg-5) ...
Checking smb.conf with testparm
Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf
Error loading services.
dpkg: error processing package samba-common-bin (--configure):
installed samba-common-bin package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of samba:
 samba depends on samba-common-bin (= 2:4.9.5+dfsg-5); however:
Package samba-common-bin is not configured yet.

dpkg: error processing package samba (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Processing triggers for systemd (241-5+rpi1) ...
Processing triggers for man-db (2.8.5-2) ...
Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.28-10+rpi1) ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 samba-common-bin
 samba
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
root@raspberrypi:~#

After that, I’m stuck :(

Any help appreciated.

You do have Samba installed, you are just mistaking the package name for the service names :)

Code: Select all

root@raspberrypi:~# service --status-all
 .........
 [ + ] nmbd
 .........
 [ + ] smbd
 .........

Are they actually running ?
Try restarting ‘smbd’ & ‘nmbd’

As for the ‘blog’ you followed, you might just as well not create a Samba user and use this share:

Code: Select all

[share]
Comment = Pi shared folder
Path = /share
read only = no
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777
Guest ok = yes

It will work just like the one in the blog, but with less lines.
You should also check that ‘map to guest = bad user’ is set in [global]

If ‘smbd’ & ‘nmbd’ are running, you should be able to connect to the share, but you will probably have to navigate to it, seeing as SMBv1 is now turned off.

Re: RPi 4 — Samba installed but service won’t start

Sat Jun 29, 2019 9:24 pm

well, yes and no.

So, it turns out it was working the whole time. I did not bother checking through windows if it is actually sharing them. When I did I face-palmed. :D

On my RPi3B+ I see the following

Code: Select all

[ + ] raspi-config
 [ - ] rpcbind
 [ - ] rsync
 [ + ] rsyslog
 [ + ] samba
 [ - ] samba-ad-dc
 [ - ] screen-cleanup
 [ + ] smbd
 [ + ] ssh
 [ - ] sudo
 [ + ] triggerhappy
 [ + ] udev
 [ - ] ups-monitor

As you can see there is a service called samba and smdb. On the RPi4 there is only smbd.

I’m sure I am not the only one who is using the previously mentioned tutorial so hopefully this thread will help others. :)

Glad I am not going mad :) :)

Thanks for your help!
