I bought some days ago the Enigma protector, and I’m facing a problem. After I protected my program, sometimes when I start it, it shows the folowing message:
«Internal Protection Error, please contact to author!».
Please note that this message appears about 10% of the times I start my program that is protected with Enigma. The message shows up in Windows 7 x64 and in Windows XP. If I try to start my program again, then it starts without the error messsage.
Could you please check this? I’m using version 2.33.
While you can’t fix it, could you please provide a way to customize the error message? Since most people of my country can’t read english, it could be confusing to my customers.

Hi Cristiano, I think you’ve enabled almost all plugins in Enigma, correct?

Please disable all plugins (Miscellaneous — Plugins panel) and do not use it until you know what plugin is for.

Also, on a very particular applications the option Protection Features — Inline Patching may fail, so try to disable this too.

If nothing helped, please send us non protected file of your application and your project file (.enigma) and we will test it out.

PS: normally, such error message never appears.

You are correct, I am using almost all of the plugins.
I am not using Inline Patching Protection, because my program is always closed 2 or 3 seconds after opened, if I enable Inline Patching Protection.
I would like to use all plugins that does not cause the «Internal Protection Error». I’m not an expert in ASM or low-level programming. how can I discover which plugin (or even more than one) that are causing this problem? Just trying one by one, or there is a better option? And I really would like to have an option to translate the error message, if possible.
Please remember that the problem occurs only sometimes even on the same machine. One time I open my program and the error appears. If I open it again a few seconds later, it works OK. (most of time it works OK)

Cristiano, I’m not recommend you to use any plugin until you know what is for. Some plugins may work well with native assembler kind of files, another will work only with .net applications.

Most useful feature of common part of plugins is debugger detection. If you enable Checkup — Anti Debugger feature, it is almost same as all anti-debugger plugins, but much stable feature. So, do not use plugins.

Regarding Inline Patching — yes, it could be useful, but due to specific, some files are working incorrectly with this feature. And as you noticed, protected file is being closed every 2-3 seconds.

Hi there,
one of our users gets the error on launch the program. Win10 (latest release/updates) on MS Surface Pro X, x64.
The program (x86) has been protected on Win10 x64, Enigma v4.20.

And you need to delete .NET 4.5 if it’s installed.

This behavior occurs if one of the following conditions is true:

Your connection to the remote computer was broken.

Your user account on the remote computer is disabled.

Your password on the remote computer has expired.

To resolve this behavior

Make sure that the local computer and the remote computer are in the same network. To do this, use Microsoft Windows Explorer (or File Explorer) to try to access the remote computer.

This must have happened during one of your latest updates. Who knows why.

This because antivirus vendors are in the business of letting you know they are being able to catch more virus than the competition, even ones that hasn’t even been found yet. So they use questionable heuristic, trying to guess what a program is doing and in our case ( and so many other products that are mistakenly flagged as threats ), they are worried by the fact that:

— We update the updater very often, at minimum once every time a new product comes out, since the updater must be updated to know about that. The most flawed heuristic used by antivirus is the «reputation» system: a file that is new, coming from a small developer that is not Microsoft or Google or Adobe, is automatically blacklisted, until it gains enough reputation. This of course penalize exactly what we are: small developers that update very often. It happens EVERY TIME we release a new update: users with bugged antivirus come here reporting new threats, but after a week or so, all reports stops, then they start again on the next update, and so on.

— Our updater downloads stuff from the internet. That’s what an updater is supposed to do, but some antivirus automatically flag this is bad behavior, as this was some kind of trojan.

— We obviously using strong encryption, because we need to check sensible data, like your own license, in the updater. You wouldn’t want to use a software that handles your personal data and was NOT protected against tampering, meaning it cannot be decompiled, and an antivirus cannot peek inside it. So, the flawed heuristic they use assumes that «just» because a software is protected against prying eyes, it «might» be a threat, because usually real virus also protects themselves against tampering ( to defend themselves against antivirus products )

You might wonder why the industry hasn’t found a better method to help legit products to not being confused with threats and, in fact, they industry TRIED to find a method, which is called «Software Taggant», which is an IEEE standard that uses a special digital signature to help antivirus products to recognize legit product ( virus writers don’t usually get access to digital signature, since you must provide with a real name/address to get one ), here’s some info:

And guess what, WE DO USE IT. Unfortunately, the ones that should also use it, that is lots of antivirus vendors, seems to ignore this standard, and rely more on their flawed heuristic, so they can advertise they can check more virus than the competition.

Not that these issues are not happening even to the best: there’s a known issue with MS Windows Defender ( hopefully should be fixed faster ), which blocked MSFS 2020 to even start, happen even to one of our developers: he had to reinstall the whole Windows, because MSFS didn’t work anymore, only to realize it was blocked by Windows Defender!!
