General errors
- No CD/DVD drive was detected on this system
- Make sure that you either have administrative rights, or you chose to “provide CD/DVD access to any user” when installing CDBurnerXP. If the option in setup did not help, you can also try using NeroBurnRights.
Access to the drives might be blocked in remote terminal sessions. To prevent this, go to the Start → Run (or Win+R) and enter “gpedit.msc”. Click OK. In the left pane of Group Policy Editor, navigate to Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → System → Removable Storage Access. In the right pane of Group Policy Editor, change the value of the setting “All Removable Storage: Allow direct access in remote sessions” to “Enabled”.
Otherwise make sure you are using version 4.5 of CDBurnerXP, this version should fix all issues with device detection.
If you are using an USB drive, make sure that the USB cable is properly plugged in. CDBurnerXP usually works well with USB drives, so this is a likely cause if your drive is not detected.
Make sure that the drive letter of the drive is between D and Z. If necessary, change it.
Another option is to update the firmware of your drive.
If the drives are also not recognized by your operating system, check http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
- The application hangs at startup
- Try removing all unnecessary USB devices like USB sticks and check if that makes a difference.
- If no disc is inserted in the drive, try inserting a writable disc.
- If you have any virtual CD/DVD drives installed, try to disable them temporarily.
- Some applications/devices may interfere with drive access. Currently known is VirtualDrive Pro and MagicJack. To make CDBurnerXP work, please either uninstall/unplug the conflicting application/device or try using the SPTD mode of CDBurnerXP.
- Make sure that the SATA port your device is connected to supports ATAPI devices (check your mainboard’s manual) and choose a different port/controller if necessary.
- Update your SATA / mainboard drivers if possible.

- Try to delete the file specified in the error message.
- CDBurnerXP keeps accessing the floppy drive periodically
- Avira Antivir could be a cause of that problem. There is a discussion in their support forums.
- Setup does not detect the .NET Framework installation correctly
- In this case you can manually add a registry-key, so that the setup knows (or at least thinks) that .NET is installed. The key you have to add is

Burning errors
- “Internal SDK error” / Low quality media error while burning
- If your drive is connected per USB, try a different USB port (preferably a port located at the back of your computer and no USB hub). Some ports may provide insufficient power. Another possible solution is running in SPTD mode (see also: https://cdburnerxp.se/help/kb/18)

- Possibly there are burning programs installed which conflict with CDBurnerXP. Try uninstalling other programs. A known problematic component is GearSec.exe.
- Device error:(264448) Could not write to Disc … Track Following Error
- Try a different brand of mediums.
- Check the power supply, the drive might not get enough power.
- The computer vibrates to such an extent that the laser can not stay in the track. In particular if an optical drive is being used as the source device.
- The device has become hot, try to operate in cool condition.
- Clean the lens of your drive, it might have become dirty.
- If all of the above did not help, check additional information.
- Device error:(16711680) Could not write to Disc … SCSI Pass-through Interface I/O Error-0xFF0037
- Try different media (for example Verbatim) and lower burning speeds. If both does not help, your drive might be out of order.

Got a sudden and very frustrating problem. After burning ‘Audio Discs’ with CDBurnerXP for many years (from MP3s) without any problems — always using using Verbatim CD-Rs — I’m now getting the following error message every time:
«CStarBurn_SCSITransportSPTI: ExecuteCDBO: Command failed — Internal SDK Error«, also complaining about «low-quality media», etc.
What happened is this. I got myself a brand new high-end(ish) PC with the specs listed below, so plugged-in my trusty external DVD burner Asus Slim SDRW-080 D2S-U Lite — only to get the above message (yes, using Verbatim CD-Rs). Strangely, also got the same message when trying to use my External Asus Slim Blu-Ray Writer. Even odder, I bought a new Asus Slim SDRW burner thinking that mu old one might be faulty in some way, only to be confronted by the same message. I also get the same sort of error message when trying to burn the CDs using Nero Burning ROM/Express. Now going completely bizarre, I am now getting the same error message on my old PC — after never having any problems. If I use different media (ie, Intenso ‘high quality’), I do not get the above error message and it seems to burn the CD successfully. However, you always get digital glitching on the last few tracks. Infuriating and weird!
I am using the very latest version of Windows 10 64-bit on both PCs.
Any ideas what the problem might be?

I am using the very latest version of Windows 10 64-bit on both PCs.
And this is your problem.
Judging by the name of the app, it may be 15+ years old, and the way it’s written may not be compatible with current Windows 10 release.
Finally — this sort of questins is best asked on app’ support forum.

I have a version of the same problem — with the CDXP forum closed I am hoping you have some information.
In my case I have two laptops an old Win 10 and a new Win 11. With Verbatim CD-Rs using the built-in drive in the old laptop I have no problem — all goes well. With an old external drive connected to the new laptop I get exactly the same error message that you do, with the complaint about inferior media — but it used to work. Oddly the external drive WILL burn a Verbatim CD RW perfectly at 4x speed (which is the stated speed for the CD)

I use that same application with Win 10 and 11.
The CDXP Forum is now unfortunately closed which is why I ended up here; the link will not work any more. The puzzling thing is why it suddenly stopped working — no obvious reason as far as I can see

Hi, a user reported the following error to me when trying to burn an audio CD: Any idea why this happens or how to fix? Log is too big for attaching, so here is a link: http://forum.cdburnerxp.se/download/file.php?id=706 Regards, |

1) There’s nothing to fix as nothing is broken. Not all commands send to device should terminate with «success» status. You don’t need to look at the log you need to check for codes returned by API calls. So what really went wrong you started focusing on this issue? What user did complain at? 2) User’s using version with all traces enabled. This is what should be FIXED immediately. It’s not production version, it’s for experiments only. It’s DOG SLOW and creates oversized (read — unreadable) logs. 3) Switch to SPTD rather then SPTI (not related to this issue, but in general). SPTI and ASPI are obsolete and kept in SDK for backward compatibility only. You’re using non-production mode for production software exploiting all possible software conflict issues making our, your and your users life very… Entertaining |

OK, I’ve managed to squeeze what’s wrong: error 09/00 — track following error. Should never happen in a normal situation. I think it’s «quatum effect» and burning failed b/c application was too slow to react. And it was too slow b/c it used version with all traces enabled. Please try normal retail one to isolate this possibility. Thanks! |

1) I don’t use API calls, I use StarBurnX. If StarBurnX decides to raise an exception unnecessarily, then it’s something to fix. |

1) For now everything works as expected. WRITE10 fails and SDK report this to the uppest level. 2) Guys will prepare a build for you on Monday. But please don’t use full trace build anywhere. It should not really burn anything… 3) It’s like buying a Porsche with carbon-ceramic brakes and using parking brake only to stop it. B/c using ordinary brakes is too annoying. No problem! It’s your car. |

I’d use the better brakes if they were built in. I’m not good at car tuning if you will. |

StarBurn is not part of the operating system either. So you end with shipping third-party component with your app. Why not use IMAPI? I know the reason. It (IMAPI) does not work as expected. The same with SPTI… It does not work as expected. That’s why many-many guys end with writing own kernel filter driver to handle uncollisioned raw disk I/O. Daemon Tools, Alcohol Software, CloneCD, Roxio, Sonic etc. This creates a MESS. So smart guys end with special unfilterable code. And even smarter guys end with gathering their resources and maintaining shared driver. This is true for SPTD. At least three companies (Daemon Tools, Alcohol Software & StarBurn Software) use SPTD. So there are more chances to see SPTD already installed on user’s machine then you think. FYI. |
