I am trying to create a new virtual machine with Oracle VirtualBox, using an already-existing hard disk. When I try to select the existing hard disk file, a .vhd file, it displays an error saying the virtual hard disk cannot be used because the UUID already exists.
So I tried the following command to change its UUID.
VBoxManage internalcommands sethduuid /home/user/VirtualBox VMs/drupal/drupal.vhd
I get this error.
Syntax error: Invalid UUID parameter
How can I resolve this?

The correct command is the following one.
VBoxManage internalcommands sethduuid "/home/user/VirtualBox VMs/drupal/drupal.vhd"
The path for the virtual disk contains a space, so it must be enclosed in double quotes to avoid it is parsed as two parameters.

The following worked for me:
-
run VBoxManage internalcommands sethduuid «VDI/VMDK file» twice (the first time is just to conveniently generate an UUID, you could use any other UUID generation method instead)
-
open the .vbox file in a text editor
-
replace the UUID found in Machine uuid=»{…}» with the UUID you got when you ran sethduuid the first time
-
replace the UUID found in HardDisk uuid=»{…}» and in Image uuid=»{}» (towards the end) with the UUID you got when you ran sethduuid the second time

If you’ve copied a disk (vmdk file) from one machine to another and need to change a disk’s UUID in the copy, you don’t need to change the Machine UUID as has been suggested by another answer.
All you need to do is to assign a new UUID to the disk image:
VBoxManage internalcommands sethduuid your-box-disk2.vmdk
UUID changed to: 5d34479f-5597-4b78-a1fa-94e200d16bbb
and then replace the old UUID with the newly generated one in two places in your *.vbox file

I have searched the web for an answer regarding MAC OS, so .. the solution is
cd /Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/Resources/VirtualBoxVM.app/Contents/MacOS/

Though you have solved the problem, I just post the reason here for some others with the similar problem.
The reason is there’s an space in your path(directory name VirtualBox VMs) which will separate the command. So the error appears.

The command fails because it has space in one of the folder name,
i.e. ‘VirtualBox VMs.
VBoxManage internalcommands sethduuid /home/user/VirtualBox VMs/drupal/drupal.vhd
If there is no space at folder name or file name, then the command will work even without quoting it,
e.g. after changing ‘VirtualBox VMs’ into ‘VBoxVMs’

Same solution as @Al3x for Windows x64, in cmd.exe:
cd %programfiles%OracleVirtualBox
VBoxManage internalcommands sethduuid "full/path/to/.vdi"
This randomizes the UUID of the disk. Pro tip: Right click the .vdi file while holding shift and select «Copy as path» to obtain "full/path/to/.vdi" and enable quick edit in cmd.exe, then right click to paste.

Even though this question asked is old, note that changing a UUID on a virtual HDD in a windows system will make windows treat it as a not activated machine (as it notices the disk change) and will ask for reactivation !

Чтобы узнать GUID Windows компьютера, выполните команду Powershell на локальном компьютере:
get-wmiobject Win32_ComputerSystemProduct | Select-Object -ExpandProperty UUID
или удаленно:
get-wmiobject Win32_ComputerSystemProduct -computername PC_NAME | Select-Object -ExpandProperty UUID
Это же значение содержится в реестре в ветке HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftCryptographyMachineGuid.
Однако, если речь идет о виртуальных машинах, Vmware технически позволяет создать (или клонировать) машины, сохраняя идентичный UUID, что конечно плохо. UUID основан на пути к конфигурационному файлу VM и он генерируется, когда вы первый раз включаете машину или ресетите (сбрасываете до изначального состояния) её. Эта информация записывается в SMBIOS файл конфигурации виртуальной машины — *.vmx. Файл текстовый, его можно редактировать в текстовом редакторе.
Нужная вам строка будет выглядеть примерно так: uuid.bios = «00 11 22 33 44 55 66 77-88 99 aa bb cc dd ee ff»
Соответственно, вы можете поменять значение на уникальное. Все действия необходимо производить на выключенной виртуальной машине.

Альтернативно, вы можете изменить UUID группы виртуальных машин, если они расположены на ESXi, через PowerCLI, используя скрипт на Powershell.

подскажите как поменять GUID у жёского диска, я в курсе что винда после этого работать не будет но это не важно и новую поставлю, самое главное чтобы GUID поменялся, я слушал что можно при помощи каких-то прог редактировать MBR в котором он и записан, но какой прогой не знаю и где его там искать и в каком диапазоне менять значения можно?

Если ошибка связанна с клонированием диска в туже систему На узле Cluster найдены два диска с повторяющимися подписями или GUID: это физические диски 11 и 13 в Windows достаточно поменять имя диска проблема совпадения GUID исчезла

Спасибо то что нужно, я правда нашел другой выход Я монтирую полные копии (снепшеты) по iSCSI со всеми вытекающими последствиями, но выход следующий, я заганяю их непосредственно в VM через гипервизор, минуя OS. не переживаю

Как изменить guid windows
Добрый день! Возникла такая проблема, не могу понять в чем дело. Клиент (Win 7 pro) не может подключить по RDP к серверу (Windows Server 2008 r2 на виртуальной машине). Ранее все работало, конфигурация сервера не менялась. Ошибка — удаленному рабочему столу не удается подключится к удаленному компьютеру. и т.д. Машины находятся в разных подсетях — IP клиента 192.168.123.11, IP сервера 10.15.15.52. Пинг от клиента к серверу есть. К другому серверу (IP 10.15.15.51) в этой же подсети клиент подключается без проблем. От сервера 10.15.15.51 по RDP есть подключение с серверу 10.15.15.52. Сервер, к которому не может подключится клиент проверен антивирусов на наличие вирусов, поставлены последние обновления ОС.
Помогите разобраться, в чем может быть проблема.

К этому моменту накопал следующее:
На двух серверах (IP 10.15.15.52, 10.15.15.53) в этой подсети одинаковый GUID сетевой карты в реестре по ветке

Соответственно подключение по RDP не работает к обоим серверам. Пока предполагаю, что возможная проблема в этом, но не знаю как это исправить. Обе машины виртуальные. Сетевой адаптер удалял, снова настраивал в диспетчере управления виртуальными машинами.

UUID основан на пути к конфигурационному файлу VM и он генерируется, когда вы первый раз включаете машину или ресетите (сбрасываете до изначального состояния) её. Эта информация записывается в SMBIOS файл конфигурации виртуальной машины — *.vmx. Файл текстовый, его можно редактировать в текстовом редакторе.
Нужная вам строка будет выглядеть примерно так: uuid.bios = «00 11 22 33 44 55 66 77-88 99 aa bb cc dd ee ff»
Соответственно, вы можете поменять значение на уникальное. Все действия необходимо производить на выключенной виртуальной машине.
Альтернативно, вы можете изменить UUID группы виртуальных машин, если они расположены на ESXi, через PowerCLI, используя скрипт на Powershell.

Понимаю, что поддержка Windows XP уже не осуществляется, но надеюсь на помощь.
Имеются несколько одинаковых (по железу) компьютеров. Для облегчения развертывания ОС, было предпринято создание образа на одном из них и клонирование на другие. Но потом, я столкнулся со следующей проблемой — сервер WSUS видит их как один компьютер. Стал разбираться — увидел, то у них одинаковый UUID не SID, под UUID понимаю http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universally_unique_identifier.
Пробовал через sysprep закрывать образ — тоже к результатам не привело.
Раньше не занимался клонированием в таком объеме, может быть не правильно применил sysprep.
Подскажите как можно изменить данный идентификатор, как я понял он выдается аппаратной частью ПК.

WSUS идентифицирует клиента по значению SusClientID в реестре (в ключеHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionWindowsUpdate) Как сбросить этот идентификатор — см. статью MS Knowledge base 903262
