I keep getting crashes that output this:

Any idea on what would be the best way to start debugging?
I’m using the latest stable as I’m not at the moment able to set up an build-env.

There’s nothing special in my code, it’s just hundreds of these

shrunk down in CSS with height (yes, there is a reason I’m not cutting the text itself).

This seems to happen somewhat randomly when doing things that require redraws.

Valgrind is usually the best way to figure out what’s up with malloc crashes. But unless you know the inner workings of Chromium you probably won’t be able to get much from it.

Can you make a small version of your app that causes the crash? Usually malloc crashes are related to memory, so it may just be something wrong with the ram on your computer?

I’ll try isolating the problem but it might be hard is this is somewhat random.
But first, it might be a good idea to run Memtest, although if it were a problem with my machine, I most likely would have run into some other problems as well.

I’m dealing with this problem too.

My app loads thousands of images and render them to the canvas. In my setup, this only happens upon hitting the refresh button of nw, though not always. I cannot reproduce this error just from my javascript code.

I suspect this is some form of memory leak or garbage collection problems. I’m still profiling it, but it doesn’t look like it was my fault.

Could you please provide a runnable case to help me reproduce the issue here?

I’ll see if it’s possible to provide a minimal case. I have subsequently discovered that this is definitely related to memory leak, though I don’t know which one is to blame. I’m using AngularJS. To identify the cause of this, I’m using ‘Record heap allocation’ in the ‘Profiles’ tab. Each time I reload the page, object count and retained size goes up. And if you observe the total memory of ‘node-webkit Helper’ in Activity Monitor (Mac), you’ll also see it going up.

I’m not doing anything weird in AngularJS other than data binding. Each time the page is reloaded, the new heap shows that previous added DOM elements aren’t freed, and I suppose my internal array isn’t freed either. The object count for DOM elements will be doubled for the second reload.

I believe when total memory of ‘node-webkit Helper’ goes near 3GB, it crashes with the above message. I’m starting to think it’s a problem of garbage collection in node-webkit. Do you have a guess of where this problem might be?

A wild guess is that the window object or the Window object from nw.gui module is leaked. Can it be reproduced by just keeping reloading some AngularJS sample?

I’m working on a minimal case. It should be perceivable when the data set is large enough. I’m not quite positive yet because there are DOM elements in my $scope array, which according to http://thenittygritty.co/angularjs-pitfalls-using-scopes is a no go. But it doesn’t explain why the AngularJS generated template DOM elements aren’t freed either.

This is a single page app using AngularJS to generate 1000 random number in LI tag. To see the problem I’m talking about, launch it with node-webkit and open the Profiles tab.

When the page finishes loading, click ‘Record heap allocation’ and click stop after several seconds. You’ll see that 10MB of memory is allocated, and 1002 HTMLLIElement is counted for (don’t know where the extra 2 comes from). And if you reload the page and record, the number goes up to 19MB and 2004 accordingly.

This does not happen in my Chrome 30.0.1599.101 Mac. Haven’t tested it on Windows yet.

This however, do not generate the crash mentioned in this issue. You’ll have to repeat a lot or use a larger data set with actual content.

Hi again. I’m not sure if it’s related. But since upgraded to OS X 10.9, I’m see the following additional warnings when starting node-webkit:

@rogerwang , I observe the following behavior. You open the app with node-webkit, without the developer tools window, refresh it for several times. Then you record heap, you’ll see LI count is already 2004. At this point, if you refresh again and record, you’ll see it going up to 3006. But it stays there afterwards.

I don’t know if the profiler can identify this leak. I changed the random number count to 10000, upon start, ‘node-webkit Helper’ process uses about 130MB. After first refresh, it goes to 223MB, second, 342MB. It keeps going up until it reaches 430MB. Then garbage collector kicks in? This behavior is not identical to what was seen in the profiler.

At this point if you open up developer tools, it adds another 200MB to the process. And if you refresh it, you’ll see it goes up until somewhere near 930MB. It won’t go down.

I also notice that the other reload button at top right, seems to be able to ‘reboot’ node-webkit.

However, setting the appropriate environment variables (specifically MallocStackLogging ) before running running the application should give us more detailed information. Can we enable this for our perf tests please?

I don’t know how adding the Malloc env variables would impact the benchmark numbers. This one is https://github.com/flutter/flutter/tree/master/dev/benchmarks/macrobenchmarks/ios. Feel free to edit anything that would be useful for the engine team to triage.

Negatively, and significantly so.

It is probably not viable to enable this for the benchmarks. But it could be useful in de-flaking. Right now, there is very little information to work with.

If the malloc flags will be too big a hit to enable by default, then this will have to be repro’d locally with the flags. This sort of flake makes me nervous esp. when we aren’t getting a backtrace to help localize it, so I am going to bump this to P2, and work on finding an owner. The priority can be dropped once we know where this is coming from, if appropriate.

It seems to be running out of RAM when doing the simulations for the future trend uncertainty. There are a few places this might be happening, could you answer a couple questions:

  • What version of fbprophet are you using?

There was a change in 0.3 that eliminates one particular source of memory issues in future trend uncertainty.

  • How many rows are in your future dataframe?

I’m hoping this was resolved, but if anyone is still having this issue please re-open and hopefully we can determine why the RAM usage was so high.

The fb_prophet version is 0.3.

Is the 1300 rows the length of the history dataframe being given to fit , or the length of the future dataframe being given to predict ? The latter length is the one that would matter here.

What arguments are you using to Prophet() ? Any changes to changepoints or uncertainty_samples ?

Is there any chance you could attach the data so I could look into what is happening in this dataset in more detail?

I’m surprised to see memory issues with 1300 rows. The examples in the documentation have more rows than that — are you able to fit this dataset or does it run into memory issues also?

@bletham I am having the same issue. 715 rows of daily data. I have run similar datasets without issues. Future is being fed 30 periods. Tried 10 periods, 360 periods, 5 periods, I get the same error. Memory was 15GBs and ran fine until this dataset, upgraded to 26 GBs and still same issue on all future() periods.

Is there any chance you can upload the dataset so I can try to reproduce? That seems like far too small a dataset to cause memory issues.

OK, I see what the issue is. Internally, fbprophet uses pandas to convert the ds column to a timestamp. When I export the spreadsheet to csv and do

you can see that the ds column is being treated by pandas as nanoseconds. This is because it is missing the hyphens (like 2017-01-01 ) that would cause pandas to correctly interpret it as YYYY-MM-DD.

This causes a memory issue because basically we are fitting the model to a time series that lasts a matter of nanoseconds, and then making predictions for days out, which induces a very large number of potential future changepoints when estimating future trend uncertainty.

The R versions is much stricter and requires specifically YYYY-MM-DD. In Py we try to be less strict and let pandas infer the date formatting, but sometimes that can go poorly like here. We make this more strict in the future, perhaps have it throw an error if the column can be cast to int (which I think is the situation in which pd treats it as nanoseconds).

Ok, too bad. On my laptop, I stopped all applications and I still reproduce the bug all the time.

The main difference I see with your setup and mine is that I installed python with macports whereas you have a conda installation.

The TruncatedSVD class is trying to allocate an enormous amount of RAM with

Running with the option algorithm=’arpack’ suggested by @DandikUnited in #7626 (comment) avoids the error, btw

Bug not reproduced in Ubuntu 64bit , Core i5.

I made an application that uses a lot of loops, and deals with MB’s of text at a time. After the program has been running for about 10 seconds, it goes to «not responding.» After about 2 minutes, I get this error:

It sounds like you are simply running out of memory so malloc is failing. Try running your app in Instruments to observe its allocation behaviors. You may not be freeing memory early enough or at all.

I tried using instruments

The allocation is spiked at the top, I am reference counting every object, and like I said before, garbage collection is on. Also, I don’t understand why it goes to «Not responding,» when there is still 2GB of memory left.

The program reads in about 1MB of text from a file, does some things with it, and releases it, and then repeats. The memory should not fill up like this, and even if I was not releasing anything, everything is automatically an auto-release object.

If you have GC enabled, those autorelease and release methods don’t do anything.

You could try calling [[NSGarbageCollector defaultCollector] collectIfNeeded] (or collectExhaustively)

I am very confused. You are malloc’ing, but then saying things are autoreleased. I don’t really think it goes both ways. If you allocate some memory using malloc, the only way you’re getting it back is free. For objects that are autoreleased, they won’t go away until a pool gets drained/released. Maybe you should set up autorelease pools around areas of the code where a lot of objects are being created so they can be released sooner?

Showing us code would definitely make this easier.

EDIT: Not as familiar with GC, so look into kainjow‘s suggestion. The autorelease pool stuff sounds like it doesn’t apply.

Sorry, I thought this was malloc failing, but it’s actually mmap.

How are you reading in your files? If you’re mapping in all your files, you might not be properly unmapping them, so you eventually fill up the address space.

If you’re using mmap directly, then the fact that the app is GC is probably irrelevant. However, if you’re reading them in with NSData’s memory mapping option, or something like that, then kainjow’s suggestion might help, if the NSDatas (or whatever) aren’t being finalized to unmap the files. (Although, isn’t the collector be running in another thread? Unless the loop is really tight and files are being mapped in very rapidly, the collector should still be able to collect the garbage NSDatas.)

Garbage collection doesn’t help if you don’t do it right. Garbage collection will not throw anything that can still be reached. Pointers to objects that are not used anymore need to be set to NULL, otherwise they can’t be collected.

I think the number reported by mmap is already in bytes. Half a gig is quite a chunk, but on an 8GB Pro (a 64bit machine) this should really not be a problem… Perhaps your VM got badly fragmented, and/or perhaps R is 32 bit only..?
