I’ve found a solution! Enter the properties of Max Payne in steam library, then go to set launch options and add:

The game should run fine without this error.

That’s not the only solution. Playing in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode should also fix the problem.

You may also need to remove spaces from the name. This is fairly simple as well:

1. Download Notepad++, it’s a free open-source text editor that does a much better job of formatting and editing than the Notepad you normally have in Windows.

   • It’s completely safe, and I’ve been using it for almost a year now.
   • If you don’t trust links (+1 for being smart), just Google search it yourself.
2. Go to your Steamappscommon folder and rename «Max Payne» to «MaxPayne» (no spaces).
3. Go back to Steamapps and open appmanifest_12140.acf with Notepad++.
4. Change Line 7, «installdir,» to instead go to «MaxPayne» (no spaces).
5. Restart Steam.
6. Open the game, and it actually works!

And no, this won’t get you VAC banned or anything weird like that. You’re modifying the file that basically tells Steam «this is where Max Payne can be found.» Valve couldn’t care less what you do to that, you can even modify Steam to look like Windows 10’s Metro style with their official Skin support; VAC applies to cheats online that affect other players, and things like Store Bans are for violating their terms of service by manipulating their system to get cheaper games.

I’ll probably put this all in a guide soon enough.

Compatability mode and admin helped me get to the launcher, but the game itself wouldn’t run with same error «Exeption in engineInit: Unable to load save game «Files». File does not exist or it is not a valid savegame file.»

What solved this error for me was moving my game directory to the C drive. Turns out my steam library was on another drive.e.g. d:program filessteamsteamappscommonMaxPayne etc.

That’s not the only solution. Playing in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode should also fix the problem.

Max Payne 2 Start Up Error “Fix” (Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10)

Overview

This guide is for all of those who are not able to start the game up.

Intro & my PC Specs

Hello guys, here is an easy guide on how to fix Max Payne 2. I tried a few of the fixes available on the Internet but none of those worked. So after a little research and work I found a very easy way to fix this game.

O.S: Windows 10 Pro 64 bits
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7970 3GB
CPU: AMD FX 6300 BLACK EDITION
RAM: 8GB DDR3

The error that I was getting

I tried to open up the game and Steam said that I was playing but the game launcher wasn’t popping up so I had to close down the game with Task Manager.

Fix

Step 1 : Download the game via Steam.

Step 2 : Go to the game directory (e.g. “C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon”).

Step 3 : Right click the “maxpayne2.exe” then go to Properties/Compatibility tab/select Run this program in Compatibility mode for: choose “Windows 98 / Windows ME” and then go to “Privilege Level” and enable “Run this program as an administrator” then click apply and OK.

Step 4 : Now remove the spaces from the game folder’s name, (e.g. change “SteamAppsCommonMax Payne 2 The Fall of Max Payne ” to “SteamAppsCommonMaxPayne2TheFallofMaxPayne”

And it should look like this :

Step 5 : Now close your Steam.

Step 6 : After you do that, edit the appmanifest file with WordPad
(..SteamAppsappmanifest_12150.acf) and change the text after “installdir” to the name of your Max Payne 2 folder ( “MaxPayne2TheFallofMaxPayne” ) and save it.

And it should look like this :

Step 7 : Open your Steam and have fun!

Fix for Max Payne 1

Solution for Max Payne 1 is exactly the same but there is an issue with some of the resolutions.

For the people that are getting this error message “Exception in engineInit:Unable to load save game “Files”. File does not exist or it is not a valid savegame file.”

Go to your Steam Library, right-click on the game and click on “Set Launch Options” and add
“-developer”, click OK and try to open up the game again.

When I start max payne 2, the options box comes up and when I click play, it gives me the following error.

Exception in engineInit:Unable to load save game «Payne». File does not exist or it is not a valid savegame file.

This happened the first time I tried to start the game. I have been able to start the game and play for a few hours but not sure how. Today, I am getting the same error and it won’t let me start the game.

Anybody know how to fix this or what is causing the problem.

I am running an
AMD Athlon 1600+
Geforce4 ti4400
Windows XP
512meg ram

Is there anything «strange» about your «My Documents» folder? Eg, the disk is out of space, or the folder is read only or something like that?

I have 8.5gig of hard drive space free, so that isn’t it. I checked to see of My Documents folder is read only and it was.

I unclicked the read only button on the My Documents folder so it wasn’t read only, but after a few minutes it went back to read only.

What can I do to fix this? I am running Win XP pro.

Also, I uninstalled Max Payne 2 and reinstalled it and it worked the first time I tried it. Played for a couple of hours and then the next time I went to play the game I got the same error above. I uninstalled it again and reinstalled it and it allowed me to play again, but only on the first time I started the game. The 2nd time I went to play I got the error again.

I hope I don’t have to keep uninstalling and reinstalling the game every time I want to sit down and play for awhile.

If I went to the game directory and double clicked the Max Payne.exe manually, it would start the game every time. If I clicked the icon on the desktop created by the game install, it would give me the above error.

Not sure how that happened but game seems to run fine now when I manually double click the exe.

copy the WHOLE : Max Payne 2 The Fall of Max Payne ,folder to your C drive. When its done copying, go to google and type in max payne 2 no cd crack, and pick the GameCopyWorld like ( first link on google ) download the 1.0v no cd crack, when its done with downloading open the zip file ( 1.0v no cd crack ) and copy the maxpayne2.exe file to the Max Payne 2 The Fall of Max Payne folder in your C drive. then go right click on the copyed maxpayne2.exe file and launch it in windows98/ME compatibility mode, and click on apply. make sure you start it from the cracked maxpayne2.exe file. this worked for me, all the other fixes did not worked for me, i dont know if ppl are still having this problem, or are active on this problem forum. but this is an legit fix, i hope that this fix is helpfull. if not i am am sorry. PS: Sorry steam that i used an no cd file but this was the only fix that worked for me and you did not have an correct fix on your steam community, i have bought this bundel pack though you for 15 euro´s and nothing worked so i needed tho do this and help other ppl. Greetz Germain = ) PS: i am not advertising GCW. just to make that clear.

Путь к папке сохранений был другой, на момент выхода игры. Создай папку для сохранений по пути, необходимому игре

нажми правой кнопкой мыши на макс пейна, зайди в совместимость и убери совместимость с виндой 98 если стоит, в моём случае такая манипуляция помогла или пробуйте поменять совместимость, так же во время установки в некоторых старых играх можно попробовать поставить совместимость на установщик с версией винды на которую их выпускали, с некоторыми играми мне такая манипуляция помогала )

Доброго времени суток! Раньше игра запускалась, работала четко. Но вот последний раз она начала меня слать. Что происходит: Проходит вступительный ролик, экран загрузки перед меню и вылетает следующая ошибка
«Exception in enginelnit: X_SharedDB: Weapons «empty» and «empty» had same ID».
Переводчик сказал: «Исключение в engineinit: X_SharedDB: оружие «пустой» и «пустой» имели одинаковый идентификатор».
Что может быть?
