Mocp fatal error no valid sound driver

Привет, ЛОР! В общем поставил я i3, настроил звук - без проблем. Захотелось минимализма, поставил MOC - он не робит. Пишет: no valid sound card driver found Cannot load…. И все. Такая же проблема с mpd - в polybar он не отображается от слова совсем....

настроил звук — без проблем

no valid sound card driver found

Настроил, ага. xD

По moc ничего не скажу, а конфиг mpd в студию.

Для Пульсы в конфиг ~/.config/mpd/mpd.conf это:

У разных приложений может быть разный аудиовыход. У mpd по умолчанию может вообще не быть аудиовывода (зависит от мейнтейнера пакета и дефолтного конфига).

Pulse audio

If you built MPD from sources, please recompile with Meson option “--buildtype=debug -Db_ndebug=false”, because this will add more helpful information to the backtrace.

You can extract the backtrace from a core dump, or by running MPD in a debugger, e.g.:

gdb --args mpd --stderr --no-daemon --verbose
run

I have been able to use cmus but I do not like it.

I would appreciate it if someone could help me out with this.

Not sure if this is issue is why I have no sound in Chrome, if it isn’t, then I will start another post for that, so I can get that working as well.

Thanks again.

So I was going through the «man moc» and was trying the different commands and used the «mocp -S» which I guess got it to load the driver it needed. Then I ran mocp and it started right up.

So now I need to figure out why I have no sound in my Chrome browser.

So I thought that I had it working, then my computer rebooted and I am back to square one.

I had Chrome sound working as well, but that doesn’t work anymore either.

What my ~.asound looks like.

Code:
pcm.!spdif {

     type hw

     card 1

     device 0

}

pcm.!default {

     type plug

     slave {

           pcm «spdif»

     }

}

# Share a single card with multiple applications

#pcm.!default {

#    type plug

#    slave.pcm «dmix:CARD=PCH,DEVICE=1,RATE=48000»

#}

defaults.pcm.!card 1

defaults.pcm.!device 0

defaults.pcm.!ctl PCH

my sound devices.

Code:
arecord —list-devices

**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****

card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC1150 Analog [ALC1150 Analog]

  Subdevices: 1/1

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 2: ALC1150 Alt Analog [ALC1150 Alt Analog]

  Subdevices: 1/1

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

card 2: Creative [HDA Creative], device 0: CA0132 Analog [CA0132 Analog]

  Subdevices: 1/1

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

card 2: Creative [HDA Creative], device 1: CA0132 Digital [CA0132 Digital]

  Subdevices: 1/1

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

card 2: Creative [HDA Creative], device 2: CA0132 What U Hear [CA0132 What U Hear]

  Subdevices: 1/1

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

card 3: Mic [Samson Meteor Mic], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]

  Subdevices: 1/1

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

the pch is the card that I want to be default.

mocp output:

Code:
mocp

Running the server…

Trying JACK…

Trying ALSA…

FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver!

FATAL_ERROR: Server exited!

I thought that I had it all figured out, but I guess not. I would like to get this working again

Thank you for your time.

I just noticed that my sound card is changing order after booting.

My power keeps going out and I have had to restart my computer and I reran

Code:
aplay —list-devices

and you can see what I had in the previous post and now it is showing this:

Code:
aplay —list-devices

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC1150 Analog [ALC1150 Analog]

  Subdevices: 1/1

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: ALC1150 Digital [ALC1150 Digital]

  Subdevices: 1/1

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I have also had issues with my Home partition not loading at boot and having to reboot till it loads. So I do not know what is going on with my system.

This really strange. I have it working now.

Every time I reboot I have a different result. For now I have chrome sound working. And now moc player is working again.

My ~/.asoundrc config:

Code:
defaults.pcm.!card PCH

defaults.pcm.!device 0

defaults.pcm.!ctl PCH

defaults.pcm.dmix.rate 96000

I went back to my original config, that wasn’t working, and now it works again.

So there is something that is going on with my main system that is wrong that makes it more inconsistent.

I am sure the next time I reboot I am going to have to mess with it some more.

Well I do not know what was the issue was, but it is working again.

I don’t know if the problem was the dir that I was in, but when I tried running mocp in another dir than my home, it started working and has been working since.

[SOLVED] moc: «FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver! Server exited!»

mocp

Running the server...
Trying JACK...
Trying ALSA...
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1741:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Unknown field mmap_emulation
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Trying OSS...

FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver!

FATAL_ERROR: Server exited!

so some time ago i messed up the sound badly and now i’m clueless on what to do. i have alsa, oss and pulseaudio (re-re-re-re-re)installed (i know i shouldn’t). i’m a total noob when it comes to the audio department so i can’t really add way too much to it.
audacious drops the following when i try to play something:
ALSA error: snd_pcm_open failed: Invalid argument.
there is audio, however (some games/web) if i pulseaudio —start.

pls ask for outputs to give you the necessary info

Re: [SOLVED] moc: «FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver! Server exited!»

did you have working audio before you did something that messed it up?

alsa is pretty much all you need for working audio. You could run pulseaudio on top of it if you want, but usually it doesn’t benefit you in any way unless you have some specific issues with alsa, like audio only playing from one application at the time.
You can safely remove everything OSS related, unless you actually want to configure your system to use OSS for some reason.

If you want to revert to default your alsa configuration you could just remove your ~/.asoundrc and /etc/asound.conf if you have modified those files. If you want to use pulseaudio, reinstall pulseaudio-alsa to revert /etc/asound.conf configuration so that your alsa-only applications work with pulse.

«remove your ~/.asoundrc and /etc/asound.conf if you have modified those files. If you want to use pulseaudio, reinstall pulseaudio-alsa to revert /etc/asound.conf configuration»
thank you, that did it!

Re: [SOLVED] moc: «FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver! Server exited!»

thanks for this
I installed alsaequal messing about and it screwed up flash in firefox, and moc with the same  «FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver!» error since alsaequal created an  ~/.asoundrc file. Once removed everything was back to awesome.

Last edited by regressionfree (2014-05-28 18:08:26)

I had to hard-reboot my Raspberry Pi (unplug the power) running Ubuntu Server 20.04 and since then I cannot run the console music playermocp anymore.
The program runs through the initialization of OSS and ALSA drivers, then fails with the message FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver!

I have tried purging the package (via apt-get purge mocp) and reinstalling it, but the error message remains. Googling around this question brings up a few very old threads (here and here) on MOC’s own discussion boards, suggesting this to be either an ALSA issue or with the sound card, but I’m not sure about this since when I run alsamixer it starts and I can do things like change the volume of it. Plus, if run other programs that use audio like mpg123 the audio is fine.

Detailed error log extracted with mocp -F is shown below, sorry if it’s a little verbose. Does anybody know what might be causing this?

Many thanks!

[SOLVED] moc: «FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver! Server exited!»

so some time ago i messed up the sound badly and now i’m clueless on what to do. i have alsa, oss and pulseaudio (re-re-re-re-re)installed (i know i shouldn’t). i’m a total noob when it comes to the audio department so i can’t really add way too much to it.
audacious drops the following when i try to play something:

If you want to revert to default your alsa configuration you could just remove your

/.asoundrc and /etc/asound.conf if you have modified those files. If you want to use pulseaudio, reinstall pulseaudio-alsa to revert /etc/asound.conf configuration so that your alsa-only applications work with pulse.

Re: [SOLVED] moc: «FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver! Server exited!»

thanks for this
I installed alsaequal messing about and it screwed up flash in firefox, and moc with the same «FATAL_ERROR: No valid sound driver!» error since alsaequal created an

/.asoundrc file. Once removed everything was back to awesome.

moc FATAL_ERROR: Server exited!

Thanks for your player, I’m enjoying it very much. However, I’m having a problem on the Raspberry Pi.

Difficult. Very Difficult

It’s very difficult to determine what is happening here. It may or may not be related to the SIGCHLD or some problem connecting to JACK. Unfortunately, your MOC was not built with logging enabled, so that avenue of evidence gathering is denied to us.

However, we have recently committed r2635 which might provide a solution (but it’s a long shot).

You may want the check that your JACK server is behaving as intended because I’m not in a position to test or debug the MOC JACK sound driver at this time.

You might also want to check any external commands run using the On. options in your MOC configuration file.

If you are able, then rebuilding MOC (preferably at the current SVN HEAD) configured with —enable-debug , running with the -D option and sending mocmaint the compressed mocp_server_log file would enable further investigation.

Thank you very much for your

Thank you very much for your answer.

Have tried to start jack as follows, which gives me an error.

I also tried to build the svn, it failed with the following build file and next the error
PKGBUILD;

Thanks again for any help, or pointers on what to do next

Tue, 2014-05-20 10:48

Missing «cpu MHz»

The line starting with the word «FATAL» when launching JACK is probably the clue you need. I think you need to ask the Raspberry Pi community about that. It’s now clear why there is one more process in your original posting’s strace output than expected (it’s the JACK server), and I’ll have a look and see if MOC is reporting on the failure to launch JACK appropriately.

The line preceeding the final «ERROR» during the MOC build suggests you may need to be doing that as root.

There are several additional problems apparant in your build which the Raspberry Pi MOC package maintainer can take up with me if he wishes to e-mail mocmaint.

Tue, 2014-05-20 22:59

On Foreign Threads

I’m also tracking the thread you mentioned above. The libraries mentioned in the messages are not required otherwise JACK would not have started at all. They will no doubt be optional and are dynamically loaded at run time.

It might be useful for you to post the output of cat /proc/cpuinfo . There should be a line there «cpu MHz» for which JACK is looking. If there is no file /proc/cpuinfo then you need to look at whether procfs is enabled in your kernel and the /proc filesystem is mounted (check using the mount command without any arguments).

Wed, 2014-05-21 09:41

Yes, about the libraries

Yes, about the libraries being optional, I thought so.

Cpuinfo does show output, but no Mhz.

Mount shows the following output

I’m very glad with the help I get, as MOC was playing 24/7 on the RPI (literately), I definitely miss that.

Wed, 2014-05-21 10:04

So Ditch The JACK

That then is the source of your problem: JACK needs it, /proc/cpuinfo doesn’t have it, game over!

It’s something you’ll need to take up with the Raspberry Pi package maintainers, but I’m a little surprised they’ve let such an obvious problem through.

But do you actually have a need for JACK? MOC should run fine with just ALSA. Try running MOC with the -O «SoundDriver=ALSA» option. If that works you can set that option up permanently in your

Wed, 2014-05-21 11:16

Right now I love you

MOC is playing again, that’s solved. 😉

You mean the Archlinux ARM packagers I guess, or specifically the Raspberry Pi package maintainers?
Would be nice to see JACK is patched.

Do I need JACK? No, I don’t need JACK, ALSA is installed, I immediately changed the config, working OOTB.
What I don’t understand, why it has been playing for the last 5 months’ with the same config.

Thank you very much jcf, helping me troubleshoot this .

Wed, 2014-05-21 19:38

The Meaning of Life

You mean the Archlinux ARM packagers I guess.

What I don’t understand, why it has been playing for the last 5 months with the same config.

The answer to that is simple: something changed. Your purpose in this life is to figure out what.

Thu, 2014-05-22 12:39

New purpose

Ah right, I already left a comment at ARCHlinux ARM about that.

Yeah, I have found ‘My meaning of life’, I’m now gonna look for the Holy Grail

The reason, not being able to configure without root rights, was simply a security problem.
mount showed;

So I changed to my /data partition, which doesn’t have these options set.

Now the configure part runs smoothly, only make fails.

My PKGBUILD looks like this right now;

Maybe you have some pointers?
I have a log file at http://pastebin.com/vRkKAd9z
Thanks,
qinohe

Thu, 2014-05-22 20:00

Give Yourself Permission

Well, this is another permissions problem which has probably arisen after having had repeated build attempts as different users. It should be easily solved by setting the directory ownership and permissions correctly and consistantly. (See the -R option of chown (1) and chmod (1).)

But if you need to, start over with a fresh source tree and build as a single user having appropriate permissions.

Thu, 2014-05-22 20:48

Success

All works well, the change to another build partition, and a few minor adjustments to the PKGBUILD.
I tried the PKGBUILD from the other maintainer, and that also works on that partition.

I’ll keep svn version running as it does all it should, and more.

This little problem learned me a lot. Thanks for your patience jcf
Regards, qinohe

Yes, between the two threads I could almost see you learning as we went along. Very rewarding.

Jack package patch

Thank you for this information, and trpost for finding this.
I have updated ArchLinuxArm
The idea is, patching Arm package with code provided on Jack audio forum by Fernando Lopez-Lez, until a fix is submitted, although, I don’t know if this is appropriate?, but we would be able to use Jack.

Thu, 2014-06-12 18:27

JACK running on RPI

After learning how to patch, I did it, JACK is running on the PI, need to solve some issues, though.
When all is done, I will make a package with the patch available, for ArchLinuxArm (armv6h)

Wed, 2014-05-21 09:43

Thanks for looking into

Thanks for looking into JACK.

I reported to Mr.Elendig, the maintainer of the AUR (Arch user repository)package about this, now I can only hope he’ll contact you.
The package can be found here https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/moc-svn/

I tried to create a package myself, without success at the moment, I’ll try some more, first time, so could take a while.

emctl start dbconsole fails

Hi,
The command «emctl start dbconsole» fails on a system where the dbconsole was working at one time. For some reason, I cannot get it restarted. I believe one of the underlying processes that is necessary for the console has died. but I don’t know what the prerequisites for emctl are.

The output for the command is here:

попробуй из под рута…что будет?

Лозунг у них был такой: «Познание бесконечности требует бесконечного времени». С этим я не спорил, но они делали из этого неожиданный вывод: «А потому работай не работай — все едино». И в интересах неувеличения энтропии Вселенной они не работали. (с)

А звук есть вообще? Может быть стоит попробовать в настройках одну ALSA оставить.

moc sofar hasn’t native pulseaudio support. But you can use alsa as
as a sound front end. What tells:

$ dpkg -l | egrep «(alsa|libasound)»

No. moc runs fine with alsa and therefor doesn’t need a «pulse
plugin»..

Which version of moc do have installed:

$ dpkg -l | grep moc

Which soundcards are you using?

$ cat /proc/asound/cards

The error message appears also if your volumecontrol in pavucontrol
is more than 100%.

Is there a customized asoundrc flowing around?

moc doesn’t find a usable mixer device. Whereas Master should be avail
in both pulseaudio and alsa once alsa-utils and libasound2-plugins
are installed. Please post the output of:

$ amixer

$ ls -al /etc/alsa/conf.d

$ ls -al /etc/asound.conf

$ ls -al $HOME/.asoundrc

Something messed up your soundcard. Why Generic and Generic_1?

This is a fancy (everything integrated) notebook. That is a good question how many sound cards or sound devices are in it and why.
I haven’t customized my alsa config but my pulseaudio config

How did you customise your pulseaudio config?

What are those settings useful for?

I’ve put those to my $HOME/.config/pulse/daemon.conf, restarted
pulseaudio and ran mocp successful, though.

Please post the output of:

$ alsamixer

Thanks for the guidance, this did the trick:

$ alsamixer
I found the proper soundcard (which has mixers)
then I have added to /etc/pulse/daemon.conf
this:
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.ctl.card 1

The number is the number of the correct sound device/card.

Elimar:

 default-sample-format = float32le
 default-sample-rate = 192000
 alternate-sample-rate = 192000
 default-sample-channels = 2
 resample-method = speex-float-10
 avoid-resampling = false
 enable-remixing = yes
 remixing-use-all-sink-channels = yes
 enable-lfe-remixing = yes
 lfe-crossover-freq =100

These make the sound quality better in pulse I think. The default settings were very awful.

No, I’ve copied the wrong line.

/etc/asound.conf this is the file for these lines:
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.ctl.card 1

Why I can not edit my comment? :

Then pulseaudio -k && sudo alsa force-reload

Remove that file or try:
defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.ctl.card 0

I replaced these:

> defaults.pcm.card 1
> defaults.ctl.card 1

to these

> defaults.pcm.card 0
> defaults.ctl.card 0

Then i did $ pulseaudio -k && sudo alsa force-reload

And mocp works

Why?

Revision history for this message

Failure came from a missconfiguration of users soundcard.
