MXMPEG2 Error 0110: no media decoder found

Using Windows 10 OS. I encounter the above error message when I insert a MKV file. I was under the impression that ver. 2022 was capable of reading this format. Can you please help?

If you are using VPX please read all the specs on the specs page. It says, Common formats only.

Funnily enough the Movie Edit Pro spec pages give no such warnings.

@Jaime-Guaman MKV is just a «container» for the actual video data, which will be in a particular format eg H264, HUFF. It will probably be that format that VPX can’t open without the codec being installed.

Install Mediainfo and open your MKV in it. On the View menu, choose Text view, and copy and paste all that info to a post here. Then we’ll see the details of the video format and go from there. It could be a simple case of installing that codec and you’ll be OK.

If that doesn’t work, you may have to convert the MKV into another format which can be done without losing quality.

If you can, could you post a small sample MKV here for us to analyse?

There are a couple of programs that should be able to convert it but I don’t want to lead you up the garden path unnecessarily.

@Jaime-Guaman I’ve had a play with a similar file (from Youtube). Unfortunately, it looks like you’ll have to transcode it into MP4 so VPX can open it (MEP won’t open it either).

I’d suggest using Handbrake. You can choose to install it or, if this will be a one-off, you can download the portable version, unzip it and run it, then delete the folder afterwards.

Open Handbrake, then open your file in it. Then set it up as follows:

Then hit Encode and Handbrake will produce a M4V file (same as an MP4) which you will be able to import into VPX. Good luck!

Video Files

I am using Magix Movie Edit Pro 2016 Plus and Windows 10. I am trying to add a video file (.mov) to my movie and I’m getting an error message that the file format cannot be read. The details state «MXMPEG2 Error 0110: no media decoder found». How do I remedy this?

For MOV files you either need to do the following:

Install Quicktime — however there is a lot of conflicting information on whether this is safe or not because of a serious security hole in one of the Quicktime applications — see this post.

Alternatively use a video converter — see Xenofex2’s solution — read further on from the post linked to above.

MXMPEG2 Error 0110: no media decoder found

The above message appears when I try to upload a MP4 video into MEP2013. What I can’t understand is it will allow me to upload other MP4 files?

I’m on Windows 10. I have uninstalled MEP2013 and reinstalled it.

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

Movie Edit Pro will only work fully on Windows up to version 8.1.

The program will not run on Windows 10 fully and is probably not dealing with newer variations of codecs or their wrappers or files above 4GB in size.

There could feasibly be more reasons but if it was working with the same file on an earlier version of Windows then that is what I would say the problem is.

Updating the program to a newer version may also not work if you are installing an upgrade to an existing computer that previously ran the old version of Movie Edit Pro if the computer does not meet the newer minimum specifications demanded of the new versions of Movie Edit Po.

MP4 is not a video file format — it is a container file and can have a variety of video and audio codecs in it.

Is the video from the same source as other video files that will load.

Post a MediaInfo analysis of the video that will not load from the Text view.

Thanks for the MediaInfo analysis, that is exactly what we wanted.

Looks like this was recorded on a smart phone and from the analysis there are 2 problems:

1. The video is encoded in HEVC format — MEP 2013 does not have the decoder installed for this format hence the error message you are getting.
2. The video is variable framerate which is known to cause audio synchronisation issues.

The easiest fix would be to run the video through a video converter, Handbrake is a free converter, to change the encoding format to AVC (h.264) and the framerate mode to Constant using these settings in the Handbrake Video tab

For future recording, if your device allows it, change the recording format to AVC (h.264) and Constant framerate.

If not then conversion will be required.
