ERROR: cockroach server exited with error: unable to lookup hostname #23461
BUG REPORT
OS: OpenSuse Tumbleweed
Version: cockroach-v1.1.5.linux-amd64.tgz
Cockroach fails to start with default arguments.
LOG
The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:
When CockroachDB nodes form a cluster, they need to be able to identify themselves to the other nodes with a resolvable hostname. By default, we use the os reported hostname, but as part of starting up, we check that we can resolve it and return that error if we can’t.
You can override the default hostname choice though with the —advertise-host flag, providing explicitly the name you want to cockroach to use instead. Can you try using that and see if it works?
I’m encountering the same error running a single node on macOS installed with brew. What argument would you advise using with —advertise-host for those of us who just want to run a development node?
Hmm, you shouldn’t be getting that error if you use —advertise-host . As a workaround, try adding your hostname to /etc/hosts .
I think you want —host (which controls which network interface gets bound), not —advertise-host in this case.
In a single-node cluster, there’s no one to advertise to, so —advertise-host has no effect (but in a multi-node cluster, —advertise-host is more likely to be useful than —host ). This is subtle and we should at least document it better.
Got it, thanks @bdarnell. So for anyone coming across this issue in the future, this is what to use for local development:
IMO, the brew start instructions should be updated.

Introduction
This document describes the behavior of the Anyconnect VPN Core module when it queries the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) mus.cisco.com in specific scenarios. This query occurs when the AnyConnect client attempts to determine if the endpoint has internet access and there is no VPN in use.
Contributed by Peter Giang, Cisco BU.
Contributed by Steve Sargent, Cisco BU Technical Leader.
Prerequisites
Requirements
Cisco recommends that you have knowledge of these topics:
- AnyConnect module installation.
- AnyConnect Diagnostic and Reporting Tool (DART) Bundle creation.
- Wireshark sniffer captures.
Components Used
The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:
- Anyconnect core VPN module version 4.8.03052
- Windows 10 Enterprise 10.0.18363 Build 18363
The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, ensure that you understand the potential impact of any command.
This document can also be used with these hardware and software versions:
- Any Operating system (MacOS, Windows, Linux).
- Any AnyConnect version prior to 4.10.
Background Information
AnyConnect queries to mus.cisco.com are expected by design.
Note: There is an enhancement defect created for this behaviour. Cisco bug ID CSCvu39643. Queries to mus.cisco.com from the VPN core must not be performed if VPN module is not used.
Problem
When the AnyConnect VPN core module is not in use (no XML profile is configured for VPN connections), queries to mus.cisco.com are generated every 15 seconds.
Solution 1
Add a Domain Name System (DNS) entry on your DNS server, in order to resolve name queries to mus.cisco.com. If you do not manage a DNS server, forward such requests to a public DNS server.
Once mus.cisco.com FQDN is able to be resolved, AnyConnect stops the query attempt.
Solution 2
Add a DNS entry to your Operative System (OS) hosts file in order to resolve the FQDN mus.cisco.com.
Windows
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Notepad in the search field.
- In the search results, right-click Notepad and select Run as administrator.
- From Notepad, open the file: «C:WindowsSystem32Driversetchosts».
- Make the necessary changes to the file.
- Select File > Save in order to save your changes.
Mac
- Open a Terminal window.
- Enter this command in order to open the hosts file with the nano text editor embedded in the OS: «sudo nano /etc/hosts«.
- Enter your domain user and password.
- Make the necessary changes to the file.
Linux
- Open a Terminal window.
- Enter the this command in order to open the hosts file with the nano text editor embedded in the OS: «sudo nano /etc/hosts«.
- Enter your domain user and password.
- Make the necessary changes to the file.

Troubleshoot
In order to confirm the proper operation, you can enable a packet capture on the egress interface of the endpoint with the use of Wireshark.
On the Graphic User Interface (GUI) of the AnyConnect client, the message «Network error. Unable to lookup host names» is displayed (as shown in the image).
When any of the workarounds are applied you can also make a packet capture on Wireshark and use the DNS filter in order to confirm the constant queries to mus.cisco.com:
On the GUI interface of AnyConnect client, the message «Ready to connect» is displayed (as shown in the image).
Tip: Even if you do not see the AnyConnect VPN core module on the GUI interface it does not mean the vpn core module is not in operation, search for the file VPNDisable_ServiceProfile.xml under the directory «C:programdatacisco on Windows», and «/opt/cisco/anyconnect/profile» on Apple devices. On Linux this is not supported.

The VPN client was unable to modify the IP forwarding table. A VPN connection will not be established. Please restart your computer or device, then try again.
Сообщение №2
Код:
AnyConnect was not able to establish a connection to the specified secure gateway. Please try connecting again.

Вобщем не знаю что мешает соединению, подскажите как подружить Polar Flow и Cisco AnyConnect?
PS Заметил что с PolarFlow ставится Bonjour, может быть это из-за него? Хотя удаление bonjour не помогло…

Нужно отключить Internet Connection Sharing
Пуск -> Выполнить -> services.msc
Службу Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) -> Отключено
Here’s a quick fix to get rid of the «unable to resolve host: Name or service not known» error on Linux.
After changing the hostname on your Linux system, you may encounter the error «unable to resolve host». Here’s what that means, and what you can do to fix it.
What Is a Hostname, and How Do You Change It?
When you set up your Linux system—whether it’s a VPS or a physical machine in your home—you may be asked to provide a hostname. This is a label your computer uses to identify itself to other machines on the network, to the user, and to itself.
Hostnames should be descriptive so that it’s easy to identify machines—even when you’re not sitting directly in front of them. «Kitchen PC», or «David’s tiny laptop» are great names. «racknerd-b7516a» is a terrible name and makes it difficult to work out exactly which machine you’re connected to.
One way of changing the hostname on Ubuntu or other Debian-based Linux distros is with the terminal.
Open a terminal by either pressing Ctrl + Alt + T, or by selecting it from your menu system, then enter:
sudo hostnamectl set-hostname your-new-hostname
Log out and then log back in, and you will see that the hostname has changed.
What Does «unable to resolve host: Name or service not known» Mean?
After changing your system’s hostname, the next time you try to run a command as sudo, you might receive a hostname error. In our case, the error was «unable to resolve host MUOVPS: Name or service not known».
This error does not prevent you from carrying out any tasks, but it can be annoying.
cat /etc/hostname
The aforementioned command will show the hostname you just set, but your new hostname is not present as an output of:
cat /etc/hosts
To fix this error, use nano to edit the file:
sudo nano /etc/hosts
On a new line, add the hostname of your machine—the hostname of our VPS is MUOVPS as shown below—then save and exit nano with Ctrl + O then Ctrl + X.
You Have Fixed the “unable to resolve host” Error!
Hostname errors are not the most serious and are unlikely to significantly disrupt your workflow or your day. But they are annoying and show that you haven’t configured your system properly. For this reason, it’s worth setting the hostname properly.
Fixing this issue requires you to edit the /etc/hosts file. Since it is a critical system file, knowing how to edit it properly is important to prevent any errors.
