Почему не удается обновить Windows 10, Server, вместо этого появляется ошибка 0x800f0823 и что можно сделать для исправления проблемы?

Ошибка 0x800f0823 возникает исключительно при попытке установить новое обновление через штатный инструмент «Центр обновления Windows». По умолчанию процедура происходит в автоматическом режиме, но в данном случае она обрывается ошибкой. Если после этого открыть логи (по пути %WinDir%LogsCBSCBS.log), там должны быть записи такого вида:

Ошибка преимущественно возникает в Windows 10 и в Windows Server 2016. При этом спустя любое количество попыток, обновление так и не будет установлено. У проблемы есть довольно четкая причина и ее нужно обязательно исправить.

Причины ошибки 0x800f0823

Практически во всех случаях дело заключается в том, что в Windows сильно устарело SSU (Servicing Stack Updates), на русском – стек обновления. Ранее Microsoft выпускала SSU для всех сборок Windows 10 (старее 2004) в виде отдельного обновления. С марта 2021 года компания изменила свой подход и теперь интегрирует свежие стеки в кумулятивные обновления.

Таким образом, если компьютер не получил хотя бы один из последних кумулятивов, не удастся установить последнее обновление. Вместо этого высветится уже знакомая нам ошибка 0x800f0823. Подобная проблема особенно часто возникает у тех, кто отключил у себя автоматические апдейты или компьютер долгое время не подключался к интернету, не включался вовсе.

Как исправить ошибку 0x800f0823?

Решение банально, нужно установить последний доступный SSU. Например, для 2004-21H1 это KB4598481. Когда будет получено актуальное SSU, можно установить свежее кумулятивное обновление. Стоит начать с KB5003173, если не сработает самое последнее. Также для Windows Server рекомендуется установить следующие обновления: KB4132216, KB4485447, KB4487006.

Есть еще запасной способ, который потребуется в том случае, если обновления SSU установлены, но установить свежую версию Windows все равно не получается. I obviously went to microsofts website to find out what the packs but i get the same error. According to microsoft my Windows Moduler Installer is out of date and needs to run it sometimes.

Any help how to solve this problem with that. I’ve got it set to receive error code entailed and to see if there was a solution. I’m finding a coming up with the same error code. When i try installing SP1 i keep installed SP1 on its own and it hasn’t.

  • All installation prerequisites met.  The Install sets a restore point and then I hit the Error: 0x800f0823.  Any solution?

  • I have got the same problem. the cab file downloads about 50% and then error 0x800f0823 appears with no description. 

    But Windows Update is telling me 1 important update is available. Installing that update starts SP2 

    installation and the same error message comes up again.

    The only time I have seen this particular error message is when the Windows Modules Installer needs to be updated. When you install an .MSU package, like the SP2 update, the installer is not automatically updated.

    The only way you can update the Modules Installer is from Windows Update.

    You might want to run Windows Update again, just to make sure there is not any updates that need to be installed.

    I’ve gotton stuck on an msXML security update that won’t seem to install. will try this again after that is successful.

    It seems the beta stuff won’t install until this is right.

    Have you looked at that article yet?

    There are some known issues with the KB954430 update.

    Basically, you need to install that update by itself, with no other updates selected.

  • I’m having the *EXACT* same problem with the recent release of Vista SP2 — spent three hours in chat with a Microsoft tech support person with no answer. The readiness pack did not help me. I’m running the standalone, and it says:
    downloading: windows6.0-kb948465-x86.cab
    Gets 50% through the green bar, then throws an error 0x800f0823.

    When I pull up the windowsupdate.log, I find this error after every install attempt:

    I think, judging from similar SP1 errors, this may be caused by the fact that I’m installing this to a cloned / ghost drive. My old hard drive died three weeks ago, and I had to back it up with TrueImage. Any suggestions? Tech support’s ‘solution’ was to try to install through WindowsUpdate three times in a row.

    I am also having the same exact problem when trying to install vista sp2 (after downloading the file to mu portable)

    Information in logfile is also the same as above.

    Curious thing is the fact that since I tried this, my automatic update is proposing the vista sp2 update, only 6mb, starts like the other one (restore point etc), till you get the screen with the Install button, you push this one, update ends immediately, tells it is succesfull but automatic update proposes it again.

  • THe line about Servicing Stack  v6.0.6002.18005 is also in my cbs.log file. Actually, I tried running KB955430 separately, and I get an error saying that «This update does not apply to your system.» The update doesn’t appear in Windows Update for me — I’m unsure how to check my update history to see if it’s been separately installed, as the Microsoft tech deleted my Windows Update history last week.

  • To check your update history, open Windows Update, and click the link in the lower left corner, «installed updates».

    Once open, you can right click a column header and enable the «Installed On» column, and sort by it if you like.

    I finally got SP2 installed.
    Got help from Microsoft support.

    we tried whatever but for me:

    do a «sfc /scannow» in cmd.exe (run as adminisrator).
    this checks for corrupt system files, and tries to correct.
    correcting did not work for me.
    in the end we decided to do an in-place upgrade (you’ll need a sp1 vista dvd for this).
    after that i had to install numerous updates, the last one presented to me was sp2.

    take care, all this will take you the biggest part of one day (that’s why i decided to do it on a Sunday)

    hope it works out for all of you

  • Thanks, but that didn’t work for me. I tried doing an in-place upgrade to Vista SP1 twice now, and each time (after a 3 hour install process), I get to a point during the «Completing Upgrade» part of the installation that says:

    «Windows could not configure one or more system components. To install Windows, restart the computer and then restart the installation.»

    I’ve never had such a hard time installing a service pack in my life — for the first time, I understand why Vista has such a bad rap.

    Mr. Trivedi — I resent the files to you late last week, but haven’t heard anything yet. Did you receive them?

  • UPDATE: I got SP2 installed, without having to do the in-place upgrade. For anyone else having problems with installing SP2 and error 0x800f0823, try this solution:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946078

    (1) Go to Settings / Control Panel
    (2) Go to Program Files and Features
    (3) Go to «Turn Windows Features On and Off»
    (4) Uncheck these:

    • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 XPS Viewer
    • Remote Differential Compression
    • Window DFS Replication Services

    (5) Install SP2
    (6) Make sure to turn the three features above on after the installation completes.

    I don’t know why those interfered with the installation, but it seemed to work for me. Thanks for your help, everyone!

  • UPDATE: I got SP2 installed, without having to do the in-place upgrade. For anyone else having problems with installing SP2 and error 0x800f0823, try this solution:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946078

    (1) Go to Settings / Control Panel
    (2) Go to Program Files and Features
    (3) Go to «Turn Windows Features On and Off»
    (4) Uncheck these:

    • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 XPS Viewer
    • Remote Differential Compression
    • Window DFS Replication Services

    (5) Install SP2
    (6) Make sure to turn the three features above on after the installation completes.

    I don’t know why those interfered with the installation, but it seemed to work for me. Thanks for your help, everyone!

The update error 0x800f0823 mostly occurs when you forgot to apply the recent servicing stack update while installing a “.msu update package” on your computer. As per Microsoft, the Windows Modules Installer must be upgraded before you install any package. 

In case you have already attempted installing a cumulative update, you must be getting the below error message –

The Windows Modules Installer must be updated before you can install this package. Please update the Windows Modules Installer on the computer, then retry Setup.

No matter how many times you try updating the existing OS on your PC, the installation fails each time. So, it is better to first install the SSU and then only proceed to install any Tuesday patch. 

Here’s how to solve the update error code 0x800f0823 while installing the latest cumulative updates on the computer –

1] Manually download and install the recent SSU

You need to first know the exact SSU for the Build version to which you are trying to update your device. Here’s how to get that –

  • First of all, visit our catalog which contains a complete list of recent updates.
  • Expand the section – Windows 10 versions, and select the one that is installed on your PC.

  • Now that you know the exact servicing stack number, visit the Update Catalog site.
  • Paste the copied KB number in the search bar and press Enter.

Что обновления для Windows из себя представляют?

Windows, напомню, обновляет сама себя с помощью пакетов с расширением CAB или MSU. Все знают, что это всегда происходит в автоматическом режиме. А если нет, обновления можно поставить вручную. Рассмотрим как попробовать установить обновления самостоятельно в Windows 7810. Итак, Windows поставляет файлы обновлений обычно в формате CAB. Именно так он лезут в систему с ближайшего или наиболее работоспособного сервера WSUS. Чтобы создать ручной дистрибутив разношёрстных обновлений (так часто просто удобнее), CAB файлы упаковываются в пакеты MSU (Microsoft Update Standalone Installer Package). И всё это дело находится на официальном каталожном ресурсе обновлений Microsoft. Дела обстоят проще, если вы заняты поиском конкретных обновлений, имена которых вам известны. Стоит отметить и тот факт, что название обновления можно после скачивания на компьютер менять на произвольное для облегчения с ним дальнейшей работы.

Для того, чтобы попытаться установить обновления самому, для начала нам нужно (вероятно, в очередной раз) убедиться, что все выпущенные и скачанные для нашей Windows обновления установлены правильно. Проще всего это сделать из Центра обновлений Windows:

пройдите по ссылке, после чего откроется новое окно с файлами установщика выбранного обновления (в моём случае это KB4054518) для различных систем, где вам нужно выбрать тот, что подходит для вашей сборки:

Запустим установщик и ждём ответа по этому обновлению. Если установка проходит гладко — статью закрываем и ждём дальнейших обновлений привычным порядком. Однако чаще всего пользователя подстерегает ошибка обновления, которая у нормального пользователя часто вызывает недоумение:

А вот причин на то может быть несколько. У меня есть несколько вариантов решения этой проблемы, и потому я решил выделить тему в отдельную статью. Так что читаем ОБЯЗАТЕЛЬНО. Вполне вероятно, что обновление, что вы ищите, на систему на встанет.

Возвращаясь к вопросу об установленных обновлениях, похожим способом можно добраться и до обновлений в Windows 10. Но в обоих случаях всегда срабатывает команда в консоли:

Как установить обновления самому в Windows

Один из способов устранения ошибки обновлений переплетается с нашей косвенной задачей по установке «отказного» обновления. Он применяется и в Windows 7 и в Windows 10. В любом случае дальнейшие действия подразумевают, что нужный пакет обновлений скачан вручную и лежит в папке Загрузки Windows:

Ознакомимся с его содержимым. Однако перед тем, как начать дальнейшие процедуры, мы должны исключить фоновое (возможное) вмешательство UAC Windows в наши дела. Для этого:

  • скопируем файл обновлений (сейчас или позже)
  • создаём в корне диска С: Новую папку и придадим произвольное (более короткое название) название, например, 1 . Это можно сделать из консоли cmd от имени администратора двумя командами:
  • поместим скопированный файл в папку и также переименуем, снова придав название покороче, например, 123

В итоге у меня получилась такая ситуация:

Как извлечь CAB из MSU?

Нередко случается, что утилита wusa.exe , которая по умолчанию вступает в работу с обновлениями, некорректно работает с пакетом обновлений. Проще говоря, в MSU формате установить обновления не получается . В таком случае можно извлечь CAB из MSU и установить повторно. Если у вас есть архиватор типа 7-zip, просто распакуйте файл обновлений с его помощью. Если нет, то в консоли cmd, запущенной от имени админа, введите команду:

В итоге наша переименованная некогда Новая папка (она же 1 ) пополнилась следующими файлами:

Если система не настроена на отображение расширений файлов, лучше, чтобы представление в директориях и папках Windows в нашем случае было в виде таблицы. Нам нужен только один из этих файлов (самый весомый) — тот, что с расширением .cab. А вот и он (кстати, для удобства вы можете переименовать и его; я на следующем рисунке так и сделаю):

Кратко о появившихся файлах:

  • файл .xml, который содержит метаданные MSU;
  • файл/ы .cab — собственно, архив обновления; с ним и работаем, и я опять его переименую;
  • *pkgProperties.txt , который содержит свойства/настройки (дата релиза, архитектура, тип упаковки и т.п.).

Теперь снова запускаем cmd от имени администратора и вводим команду на установку с помощью Диспетчера пакетов Windows PkgMgr.exe — утилита работает только в Windows 7:

где первая выделенная жирным часть команды — путь к файлу .cab. Флаг /quiet заставит систему установить обновления фоном, /l:c:1321.log — создаст лог процесса, в котором можно будет проверить результаты установки, /norestart — система не будет проситься в перезагрузку в случае успеха установки. Если вы владелец Windows 10, у вас есть другой инструмент принудительной установки. Это уже происходит с помощью команды DISM:
