Error 30

Had bbs02b clutch problem, pedals turning but only motor works not anymore bicycle but a scooter, with a pedal throttle :)

Then repair clutch was going to take 3-4 weeks from China.

Local, in Germany (quick shipment) online sellers were asking over 100e for clutch and tool to remove.

Since i am a bike courier, making over 500km per week, decided to take another bbs02b and also second motor with guarantee for 500e.

Second day second motor stopped working, error 30 and then error 21.

Catastrophe because some days okay but weeks to cycle with normal bike would be too much.

Got a 3rd as a desperation, to send second one back for refund.

Just after 3rd arrived, 20 minutes later found the problem causes for error 30 and 21.

Error 30 and 21 was because my middle double stander, cut the cables of Speed sensor and Gear sensor. Because i didn’t make the cabling very well,l when they exit from motor and follow their paths to the speed and gear sensors, they got loosened and double stander was smashing them during its opening. Happy to be found, and fixed.

3 days later, only error 30, again. And battery is full but sometimes display says 0 percent as well. This time i thought controller. Changed the controller with the one which had clutch problem after 2 years. But it was same error 30.

Unbelievable, maybe screen was broken. I connected the mobile phone with Speeedy android app, trying to connect to motor, no chance. Connection problem.

Just before getting mad, was reading that post, was telling to check the parts by changing one by one. Did no chance.

When i was hopeless, and was going to have only chance to use another. I found gear sensor cable was damaged, disconnected the connectors.

Magic was that finally. Everything was working fine. And my happy low battery consumption supporting, power downgraded Bbs02b 750 Watt to 280 Watt no was back. Because settings saved to the controller was the only copy i had.

Tomorrow i will also get a backup of the settings and email to myself too.

That is my 7 days long bafang bbs02b story with happy end. Soon will be happier when i repair the clutch and have really working backup. It’s not good to cycle over 500km per week and on top of a lot of stairs to go up and down.

Thanks to downgraded Bbs02 it’s easier and some fun including as well.

And thanks for the original post with some ordered general reminders and other experiences as well.

And bafang error Codes are and which causes what also interesting. I wouldn’t expect that much problem from a gear sensor :)

Hi all, I was moving the cables around on my bike yesterday. When I plugged the green 5 pin connector back in I must have twisted it and it bent the pins causing them to short and cause a flash! (In hindsight I should have taken the battery off but I didn’t…!) I’ve hand to strip back the connector to try a crude repair of the wiring and everything tests ok with a multimeter but now when I power it up the C961 display comes on but then displays error code 30 and nothing works. I’ve ordered a new cable but I’ve got a feeling I’ve killed something else. Is there any way to prove whether it’s the LCD display or the BBS02 controller that is at fault? I’ve also ordered a programming cable if that’s any help.

Thanks in advance, Mike. (Cracking forum by the way!)

error 30 is usually from the controller or the trunk cable.

Thanks Woosh, I’ll switch the trunk cable as soon as it comes and take it from there. In the mean time I’ve seen a thread for testing the mosfets in the controller so I’ll give that a go while I wait bikeless !!

Could be a couple things.
30 is communication to lcd abnormal, if it is still showing 30 after new trunk cable fitted then either lcd or the controller is at fault, out of the two a short will probably affect the controller as most of the wiring is multi functional. You should see your charged battery voltage at the lcd connector if not then the controller is at fault.

Thanks Neal, When the LCD powers up the display shows flashing empty battery — is this what you mean or should I be checking with a multimeter?

If there was a spark, you connected to battery voltage pin to one of the others, which would almost certainly do some damage. If you’re lucky, it’s just the LCD. I think that probability is on your side, so try a new LCD, otherwise you could have wiped out the controller, PAS, throttle, brake switches or motor halls, or any combination of those.

Disconnect the lcd connector, identify the 5v & Gnd on the trunk side connector to check for V’s.
d8veh has posted somewhere a diagram/schematic of the pins so shouldn’t be hard to use the search to find it or d8ve may repost it if you ask him nicely. Though again you need to be very careful not to short any pins but as you have already done it might not make much difference.

If I’d wiped out the LCD wouldn’t it be dead — it still comes on and reads code 30?

The LCD only needs battery voltage and ground wires connected to light up and look like it’s working. With only those two wires connected, it should show the battery voltage correctly. The fact that it shows an empty battery is serious. Don’t waste your time checking mosfets. they’re nowhere near the LCD and can’t be damaged like that. Checking hall sensors would be more worthwhile.

So does that point to a broken LCD or controller? I might have to bite the bullet and order one or the other !

I’ve just checked the 5v connection and I’m getting about 10v. I’m getting about 50v on the P+ and about 40 on the PL. I got my programming cable today and I can get it to connect to the computer but I can’t get the option to read flash.
I also read this article http://www.poweredride.com/info/dump-your-bafang-display-for-stealth-and-better-display-options

It explains how to use the BBS02 without a display by joining the P+ and PL wires which I tried and it still didn’t work!
I think this points to a new controller — any ideas where to buy one please!

10v means that you’ve probably blown the 5v regulator in the controller. It wouldn’t surprise me if the throttle hall sensor is blown too. As I said before, just about every electrical component is vulnerable, including the hall sensors in the motor. To test them, you need a 5S balance lead, and you have to dismantle the motor to be able to turn the rotor. That will show if they’re switching. They’re not too difficult to repair. I’ve just done some.

I’ve found a post on how to check mosfets http://www.ebikes.ca/documents/BlownMosfets.pdf

Any idea if there’s one on how to check the regulator & hall sensors?

I told you that you don’t need to check the mosfets. You can’t get at the 5v regulator or any other components in the controller because they’re cast in silicone rubber.

To check the hall sensors, dismantle the motor until you see them. Plug in a 5S balance lead to the socket; apply 5v to the 5v and ground wires; measure from the black (ground) to each of the other three wires while you turn the main motor shaft. You should see the 5v go on and off on those wires when you turn the shaft. Here’s a photo of my repaired hall board. This is the amount of dismantling you need to do to test them. If yours are faulty, I’ll explain later how to repair them:

I think the fact I’m getting 10v at 5v terminal suggest the regulator is fried and if I can’t get to it I may as well buy a new controller but that’s a job in itself! Anyone know the best place to get one? Either that or someone who can fix mine.

Thanks for your help, it’s much appreciated

I was out riding my x3 pro today and the motor just stopped with Error Code 30, communication failure. I disconnected and reconnected all of the cables from the display, all the way down to the motor. I even opened up the compartment with the controller and checked that connection. Nothing fixed the issue. I ended up pedaling my bike back home for 10 miles. I’ve only had the bike for a month. I emailed support and messaged Wallke on FB but I’m not getting any response. @Max Black can you help me out with this?

I sent Wallkee a video of my disconnecting and reconnecting all of the connections showing nothing fixing the problem. They ended up shipping me out a new controller and pedal sensor. It’s supposed to be here on Wednesday. My bike has been shut down for 1 week, can’t wait to get it going again.

  • #7

Error 30 can also be a harness failure. We see overtightened
zip ties that have cut into the very small AWG wires in the harness. While not a DIY bike, I’d still be looking very hard at the wiring. And consider using your multimeter to test for wire continuity.

So what is the function of a brand ambassador?

  • #9

If you see all of the assist lights flashing on the display, and the bike shuts down or displays ERROR 30, there may be a communication problem between the controller and display.

How To Troubleshoot Wallke Electric Bike Error code 30 Problems?

1. Unplug the sensor connector and restart the display. Is the error code 30 still there?
2. Replug the sensor connector, Unplug the throttle connector and restart the display. Is the error code 30 still there?
3.Replug the throttle connector, Unplug the headlight connector and restart the display. Is the error code 30 still there?
4.Replug the headlight connector, Unplug both the brake level connectors and restart the display. Is the error code 30 still there?
5.Please check if the connector wires are damaged?

Note: Please Check all the connections and make sure they are connected properly. This is almost always the result of a poor connection. If the issue persist, please check for any twists or bends in the wiring harness.
If it still shows error 30, please contact Wallke Ebike team.

I did all of that and still got error code 30 after each one. I think it’s either the display, the motor, or the connection to the motor.

I got a new controller and display from Wallke yesterday and swapped them out . Still no luck, I’m still getting error code 30. So far, I have changed out 2 controllers, the wiring harness, the pedal sensor, and the display and remote. Still waiting on the next steps from Wallke. My bike has been down for 2 weeks now.

It could be the motor itself.

Yeah, that’s what I suspected from the get go, but they wanted to try everything else first I guess.

🤣 Well given that he tells us he’s replaced all devices and wiring harness and still has an issue… what would you guess?
I’m thinking he’s overlooking something simple. I lean towards a bad wiring harness.

«So far, I have changed out 2 controllers, the wiring harness, the pedal sensor, and the display and remote»

Might be the actual motor.. :(

  • #18

Well I got the new wiring harness along with a new throttle, light, and pedal sensor. After swapping them out, I’m still getting error code 30. He insisted the motor was fine, but I beg to differ. It’s been 3 weeks, I’ve gotten 3 different shipments for parts that didn’t work. I’m so over this. I shoulda just spend a little more and bought a bike with local support.

This bike has the same problems. Next step, new controller. Jim attempted to ride it up a hill, because that’s what it shows in the promotional videos. He learned the hard way the hub-drives can’t do that. This bike is a fried porker that weighs 71.6 pounds.
