Macrium»?

Macrium. ?

 chkdsk/r

Why am I getting Clone failed — Error 0 when I try to clone my 32GB bootable USB flash drive to my blank 16GB USB flash drive even though it only has 5GB of files?  I was able to image the original USB flash drive and then restore it another USB flash drive without issues.  My Windows 11 retail USB drive is 32GB read-only drive and my target drive is a standard 16GB flash drive.  I was trying to make a backup copy of the original Windows 11 installation media but the clone failed but image and restore works fine.

There appear to be some lingering issues with Clone operations here and there lately.  I’ve never used a Clone operation, so I can’t say anything on what you can do.

Does the same thing happen if you make an image of the flash drive to a file first and then restore that backup image to the new flash drive?

What make and model of flash drive is the destination device?  How old is it?

And it may be another case where the flash drive does some silly configurations where Reflect chokes on it.  I had one where I had to send in my flash drive to Macrium and they discovered the issue was the hardware configuration of the flash drive.  Turned out to be a very rare use case that I just happened to stumble across.  Smile

It only happens if I try to clone a larger USB flash drive to a smaller USB flash drive.  It doesn’t happen if image to a file and then restore that backup to a new flash drive.  The source drive is a brand new read-only 32GB Windows 11 USB drive inside the Windows 11 Pro retail box that I purchased from Amazon.  The target drive is a 16GB Kanguru FlashBlu 3.0 USB drive.  The used data is about 5GB.

I asked about how hold the target flash drive was because some older flash drives cause errors with certain restore operations in Reflect.  Is the Kanguru flash drive a newer one or older?

Seems the problem has to do with resizing images on the target restore.  I came across a similar issue recently.  Reflect only failed to properly write to the flash drive when the image had to be resized down to fit into the smaller space.  As long as there was sufficient space on the target to write all of the data, of course.  Writing a 512 GB flash drive’s contents to a 256 GB flash drive caused the problem.  (The total written contents were under 256 GB.)  When writing the 512 GB image to a 512 GB flash drive, it worked fine.

If that’s the case here, you will probably need to open a support ticket or someone from Macrium may chime in here.

Older but I was able to clone the 16GB Kanguru drive to a 64GB Sandisk Ultra drive without any errors.  The Clone failed — Error 0 occurs as soon as it finished checking the file system and starts processing volume.  My Macrium support expired on May 18, 2022.

Generally, if it’s a reproduceable issue and Macrium can also reproduce it, they will still accept your tech support request.  It’s technically a bug report at that stage, so Macrium will work with users to fix it.  So, it may be best to see if Macrium asks you to submit a support ticket.

I have been working with support for over 4 months to solve an issue I have with cloning since upgrading from v7 to v8. When I clone a drive to another drive and one or more of the partitions of the source drive does not have a drive letter assigned the cloning process will fail with the error «Clone failed — Error 0 — Read failed — 21 — Device not ready. Error reading volume bitmap — Error code = 1. Please run ‘chkdsk : /r» right at the moment the cloning of the first partition without a drive letter on the source starts. At first Macrium could not reproduce it and I could only reproduce it on my own system, but I finally managed to prepare a VM that consistently had this error on several drives. Sometimes cloning would work, but after a reboot it would not anymore. I sent them my VM as well as an image of my system. Support has tried hard, but they could not find a cause and thus could not solve it.
Combined with this bug I also found that when this error occurs only target drives that have drive letters are listed in the confirmation window that is shown just before the process starts, partitions on the target drive that do not have a drive letter are not. That bug also occurs when restoring images. Making an image from the same source drive and restoring it to the same target drive does however work well, without any error. The bug definitely is a cloning bug. In all cases that I tested, reverting to v7 solves these issues. That would not help you and you could not even test it as v7 does not support USB flash drives. But I would indeed recommend to try submitting a ticket, as there are apparently more issues with cloning, and maybe somehow they are connected. I do know that support really would like to have more information to be able to solve the bug I am experiencing, but at this moment they are at a loss, as they put it. I am on Win7 x64 BTW. On a fresh Win10 install (dual boot) this issue does not occur with the same drives. I am planning to test whether this is an issue with just Win7 by doing a test upgrade of my system to Win10 and checking what happens then.

I have had this issue a couple of times (again this morning when trying a clone) — couple of things to check — have you run a chkdsk on the source drive with the /r /v paramaters

the second thing can you create a backup of the drive or does it error like it does with a clone?

Backup works, only cloning from larger to smaller drive fails.  Cloning from smaller to larger works.  There are no details after Clone 0 failed — Error 0.

MiniTool Partition Wizard Free.

Macrium Reflect Free
Macrium Reflect

Macrium Reflect Free

Macrium Reflect Free

Macrium Reflect Free

Macrium Reflect
  2. В следующем окне нажмите «Select a disk to clone to» и укажите диск, на который нужно выполнить клонирование.
Macrium Reflect Free

Clone failed error 9 is an application error message displayed by the Macrium Reflect software when an error or fault occurs during the cloning of a disk. Reason for Clone failed error 9

Errors can show up for many potential reasons. Each error message represents a different cause for the error. In the case of clone failed error, the primary reason is the failure of the CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) checksum of the data stored in the disk in the form of files. CRC is an algorithm used to test the integrity of the data or file. If the CRC test fails, that means the data is corrupted or altered somehow.

There could be many reasons for the failure of the CRC test of a file or any data. The most probable explanation is the presence of malware on the system that is slowly corrupting the disk’s file system. Other causes are also possible such as the harmful physical condition of the disk, etc. In such scenarios, users are more likely to experience messages like clone failed error 9.

Solutions for clone failed error 9

There are quite a few ways that a user can try to rectify clone failed error 9. The following are the most reliable solutions that the users can employ.

Running an SFC scan

System File Check(SFC) is a system utility program that can deal with most of the problems caused by corrupt files. It scans the system’s corrupt files and restores them automatically. Follow the given steps to run an SFC scan. It requires administrator privileges to execute.

  • Right click on the start menu.
  • click on Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  • Type sfc /scannow in the shell and hit enter.

Depending on your system and the number of issues found, the process would take time to complete.

Running an SFC scan

Disable Antivirus software

Antivirus softwares continuously scans the system in the background to prevent it from threats and vulnerabilities. If Macrium reflect or Antivirus software are accessing the same portion of the disk simultaneously, chances are there might be some conflict regarding the access of the portion of the disk, which ultimately can lead to a clone failed error 9. Or sometimes, The antivirus won’t allow the cloning program to interact with the disk’s file system due to security concerns.

Therefore it is recommended that the users disable the Antivirus software while the Cloning process is being carried out, especially if the user is continuously receiving failure error 9. Different antivirus has different procedures to disable their default background operation temporarily. Disable your antivirus accordingly.

Run Disk Cleanup

Running the disk cleanup utility can help the user get rid of the clone failed error 9 as the utility program cleans the disk appropriately and removes any corrupt temporary files. Follow the given steps to run the disk cleanup utility on your target disk (the disk you are trying to clone).

  • Open start menu.
  • Type disk cleanup in the search bar.
  • Open the Disk Cleanup program.
  • Select the drive you want to clean.
  • Let the process finish.
  • Clean the temporary files as suggested.
  • Click on OK.

Run a chkdsk scan

Chkdsk is short for Check disk. It is a command-line utility used to check, recover, and repair disks from any sort of damage. Administrator privileges are required to run this utility. Follow the given steps to eradicate clone failed error 9 using chkdsk.

  • Right Click on the start menu.
  • Open Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  • Enter ‘chkdsk /f /r‘ in the shell and hit enter.
  • Reboot your system when finished.

/f stands for a fix. It fixes the issues found during the scanning. /r stands for restore. It tries to restore the data.

Avoid Bad sectors

Another way to avoid the clone failed error 9 is to ignore the bad sectors of the disk that are causing the problem. This could be done within the reflect application settings themselves. Follow the given procedures to ignore bad sectors.

  • Open the Macrium relflect application.
  • Go to Advanced option in the upper menu.
  • On the left side, Open Advanced Backup Options.

FAQs on Clone Failed Error 9

What is the complete form of RAID?

It stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. It is a data storage technology scheme.

Differentiate between disk cloning and backup?

Backing up data means copying the data to another disk to restore it if the original data is lost. Cloning is when you have to change the disk itself but copy the exact data and file system in the new disk. For example, upgrading from an HDD to SSD, you don’t want to change the data, but you could change the drive after cloning.

What do you mean by disk imaging?

It means cloning the entire disk into another disk but in archived and compressed form.

Conclusion

Macrium Reflect is a disk data management software used by users worldwide. Due to some data corruption and other reasons, users could face errors like clone failed error 9 during the cloning process of a disk. In this article, we provide you with many easy ways to employ yourself to get rid of this error.
