Application Status
What You Need to Check Your Application Status
You can check your application status online. You will need the following information:
- Last Name
- Include suffixes (ex. Jones III, Patton Jr, etc.)
- Include hyphens as appropriate (ex. Jackson-Smith)
- Date of Birth (MM/DD/YYYY)
- Last Four Digits of Social Security Number
- Go to the Online Passport Status System to check your application status if you applied by mail or in person. Check your MyTravelGov account if you renewed online.
- You may not be able to get a status update for 2 weeks after you apply or renew. During these weeks, your application and supporting documents are safely on their way to us.
- Receive automatic email updates on the status of your application by entering your email address after locating your pending application in the Online Passport Status System.
What Your Status Means If You Applied In Person or Renewed by Mail
Application Status | Description |
---|---|
Not Available | This update means your application is still in transit to us. During this time, your application is delivered to a mail facility, your payment is processed, and your application is entered into our system. When your tracking number says «Arrived,» your application has reached the mail facility. When your payment is processed, your application has reached the intake facility. It may take up to 2 weeks from the day you apply until your application status is «In Process» at one of our passport agencies and center. |
In Process | Your application is being reviewed at one of our agencies or centers. The length of time your application remains In Process depends on the service you selected and our current processing times. |
Approved | We have finished reviewing your application and will begin printing your completed passport. |
Mailed | We are sending your passport to the address you provided on your application. Check our Online Passport Status System for the tracking number. We will send your supporting documents such as birth certificates and previous passports in a separate mailing that may not arrive for up to 8 weeks after you receive your new passport. |
Need More Help?
What should I do if I haven’t received my passport?
If the Online Passport Status System or the National Passport Information Center say your newly-issued passport has been mailed out, but you have not received it after two weeks, please contact the National Passport Information Center. Customer service representatives will help you complete a special form (known as the DS-86 form) which is a signed statement that you didn’t receive your U.S. passport.
You have 90 days from the date your passport was issued to complete the DS-86 form. After 90 days, you must reapply and pay all fees.
Why does my status say «Not Available» after it was already «In Process»?
You will see this update if we are experiencing temporary, technical issues with our Online Status Passport System. We recommend you check your status on another web browser or wait several minutes to check again.
Why does my status say «Mailed» if I just applied?
Your status may be «Mailed» if you recently received a new passport in the last 180 days, and you are re-applying for a new passport. For example, you may need to re-apply for a new passport using Form DS-5504 if you need to Change or Correct Your Passport. It may take 2 weeks after the date you apply on Form DS-5504 for your status to change to «In Process.»
Why does my status say «In Process» after it was already «Approved»?
You may see this update if we discovered an error or problem we need to fix during our final quality control review of your passport. We are fixing the issue and preparing to print a new passport for you.
What should I do if my address has changed?
If you applied in person or renewed by mail, contact the National Passport Information Center. You do not need to contact us if your address changed after you received your passport.
If you renewed online, login to your MyTravelGov account and click on «Manage Application» to change your mailing address. You can complete this change on your own up until the time that your application is approved.
When completing your child’s passport application, we recommend you add your name in the “In Care Of” part of the Mailing Address section on Form DS-11.
Passports can be delivered only if your name is connected to your address. If you want to receive your passport at an address other than your own, or an address where you are not registered, the passport must be sent “In Care Of” someone else.
Will I receive my new passport and my documents back in one envelope?
You will likely receive multiple mailings depending on what document(s) you applied for:
Passport Book: You may receive your newly-issued passport and your citizenship documents (examples: previous passport or birth certificate) separately. You may wait 8 weeks after receiving your passport before you receive a second mailing with your citizenship documents. Pay $18.32 for us to return your completed passport book using a 1-2 day delivery service.
Passport Card: You may receive your newly-issued passport card and your citizenship documents (examples: previous passport or birth certificate) separately. You may wait 8 weeks after receiving your passport before you receive a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We only send the passport card via First Class Mail. We cannot send cards using 1-2 day delivery services.
Both a Passport Book and Card: You may receive three separate mailings; one with your citizenship documents (examples: previous passport or birth certificate), one with your newly-issued passport book, and one with your newly-issued passport card. You may wait 8 weeks after receiving your passport book before you receive a second and third mailing with your passport card and citizenship documents.
I received my passport and have waited over 8 weeks but have not received my supporting documents. What should I do?
It may take 8 weeks after you receive your new passport for your supporting documents (e.g. birth certificate or previous passport) to arrive. If you have been waiting more than 8 weeks, contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to report that you have not received your documents.
Processing Times
Routine: 6 to 9 weeks*
Expedited: Costs an extra $60. Takes 3 to 5 weeks.*
*Processing times begin the day we receive your application at a passport agency or center, not the day you mail your application or apply. Mailing times may add several weeks on to the door-to-door time it takes to receive your passport.
Expedited at Agency or Center: Must have international travel in the next 14 calendar days.

Passport Present Address doubt.

I am working in a state different from my permanent address. I am from Kerala (India), but in Bangalore (Karnataka, India) from 2010 for studies and work. I do not wish to change my passport address to my present address, as it is a temporary one (I have stayed in so many places in Bangalore in the last 7yrs. I have a rent agreement for the place where I am staying from last 9months).
I have my passport expiring in 2019. Also, I wish to add my wife’s (married in 2016 June) name in my passport. As I have received the ITA, I think to do it on next week with the tatkaal scheme, which will take only 3 days to do. I will get my new photograph in my pp as well as the pp validity will get extended by another 10 yrs.
Now the queries are,
1. Will passport re-issue has a police verification?
2. Will the pp officer insist me to change the passport address from my present one to the current one (Bangalore)?
3. I have decided to apply for PCC (for CIC) after a week of getting the re-issued passport. Will the PCC get into trouble as my passport address is different from where I am staying currently? Will they suspect why I did not change my passport address to the present address upon re-issuing?
4. Or is it a better idea to continue with my present passport and renew it in 2019?
5. My wife’s passport was taken after our marriage. The address given in her passport is her parent’s address, but my name is given as spouse. Will her address cause any problem? I require many formalities to change her address in her pp, which I don’t think I can do as we have ITA in hand and it will be risky to waste time. Would it be a problem if my wife’s address is different from mine? in CIC.

I have a few more queries..
5. My wife’s passport was taken after our marriage. The address given in her passport is her parent’s address, but my name is given as spouse. I require many formalities to change her address in her pp, which I don’t think I can do as we have ITA in hand and it will be risky to waste time.
Will her old address cause any problem? Would it be a problem if my wife’s address is different from mine in CIC.
6. Is there any problem if my passport is not entered with my wife’s name?
7. Suppose if I get the visa luckily, should I come back to India before the expiry of passport for renewing it?
8. Since the visa stamping for PR will be done in old passport, how to transfer it to the new one after renewing? Is it a troublesome procedure which takes months?

I had a similar experience, your passport in this case will have new expiry date which will be 10 years.
When you apply to particular city psk from any address, you will have to show the proof of address of the city of psk you are applying.
For adding spouse name, there will not be any police verification. However, the address will get changed to your current.
For spouse, i would suggest to get it done from the place mentioned in her passport if it takes lot of time for you. For you anywhere you feel comfortable.
At the end of the day, its good to have spouse name added to passport. but there is no such requirement from IRCC.

Yes
2. Will the pp officer insist me to change the passport address from my present one to the current one (Bangalore)?
If you visit Bangalore PSK, you need to produce proof of your current residence and you have provide details of last 1 year of residence. The new passport will have your current residence as address.
3. I have decided to apply for PCC (for CIC) after a week of getting the re-issued passport. Will the PCC get into trouble as my passport address is different from where I am staying currently? Will they suspect why I did not change my passport address to the present address upon re-issuing?
Post passport renewal, you will get the PCC on same day. My advice to you is get the new PP from Bangalore with your current address.
4. Or is it a better idea to continue with my present passport and renew it in 2019?
Having spouse’s name on your PP comes handy at a lot of places and would help her get the PCC same day as you even if she has a different address on her passport but has your name on it.
5. My wife’s passport was taken after our marriage. The address given in her passport is her parent’s address, but my name is given as spouse. Will her address cause any problem? In my case, my PP is on current address with spouse name mentioned and her passport had different address but my name mentioned as spouse. We both got PCC the same day.

If you have sufficient time, get a new passport with your spouse’s name added and on current address.

How to Fill a Passport Application
In the previous section, we discussed how to change address in passport application form after submission, as well as the passport address change procedure. In this section, we’ll look at how to prevent making mistakes.
Because the passport forms are computer (by ICR scanners), incomplete records will not be adequately read and rejected. They will use the form to generate the information included in your passport.
As a result, it’s critical to provide clear and accurate information. It is also illegal to provide false or incomplete information or withhold any required information.
How to Fill Out a Passport Form Offline?
- Fill out the form in capital letters, with one letter in each box.
- Avoid using fancy typefaces and stick to ordinary ones.
- Only use a blue or black ballpoint pen, not an ink pen.
- Mark the boxes where you must choose one or more possibilities as your response and leave another option(s) blank with a cross.
- While writing, stay away from the box’s edges.
- After you’ve finished writing each word, leave one box vacant.
- Outside the box, don’t write anything.
- Don’t overwrite anything. If you make a mistake, scratch out the character and continue writing in the following area.
- Fill in just the information that is requested, leaving the rest blank. If a field doesn’t apply to you, don’t scratch it out or mark it as ‘NA.’
- Do not fold, smear, or dirty the form.
Follow these simple procedures to prevent making mistakes and to avoid situations like how to change address in passport application form after submission.
Requirements for Passport Photographs
Do not picture if the form is at a PSK or a mini-PSK. If the condition is at another centre, DPC, SPC, or CSC, you must paste a photograph with the dimensions and details listed below.

If your passport has been significantly damaged, especially the book cover or the page displaying your personal data and photo, you will need to apply for a new passport. Damage that might require you to replace your passport includes water damage, a significant tear, unofficial markings on the data page, missing visa pages (torn out), a hole punch, or other injuries.

- The damaged passport;
- A signed statement explaining the damaged or mutilated condition of your passport book and/or card;
- Form DS-11; and
- All documents required by Form DS-11, including citizenship documentation (i.e., birth certificate).

U.S. citizens born in Jerusalem will be able to request either “Jerusalem” or “Israel” as their place of birth when applying for U.S. passports, and either “Jerusalem” or “Jerusalem, Israel” when applying for Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBAs) and Consular Reports of Death Abroad (CRDAs).
Please note you do not need to reapply for a new U.S. passport, CRBA, or CRDA because your document will remain valid after this change in our policy. If you choose to renew or reapply for a consular document with the new place of birth designation, you must pay all applicable fees.
U.S. citizens born in Jerusalem who do not specify their place of birth on applications for consular services as “Israel” will continue to be issued documents that indicate their place of birth as “Jerusalem.”

Since 2007, we have issued only electronic passports. An electronic passport has a small integrated circuit (or “chip”) embedded in the back cover.
The chip securely stores:
- The same information visually displayed on the photo page of the passport,
- A biometric identifier in the form of a digital image of the passport photograph, which facilitates the use of facial recognition technology at ports-of-entry,
- The unique chip identification number, and
- A digital signature to protect the stored data from alteration.
If the chip fails, the passport remains a valid travel document until its expiration date. You will continue to be processed by the port-of-entry officer as if you had a passport without a chip.

We are placing Quick Response (QR) code stickers on the back of passport books to give you easy access to important passport and travel information. You may remove the sticker, though we recommend keeping it on so you have quick and easy access to our website. If you scan the code using the camera on your mobile device, it will link you to our website. If you do not wish to scan the code, you can also access the After I Get My Passport webpage. The QR code is identical on all passport books, does not contain any personally identifiable information, nor does it change the way border officials, airlines, and others review your document. We are not currently placing QR code stickers on passport cards.

A parent or legal guardian may sign the passport if the child is too young to sign his or her own name. The Department introduced a redesigned Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240) in January 2011. The new design has state-of-the-art security features to help prevent fraud and identity theft. The FS-240 is an official record confirming that a child born abroad to a U.S. citizen parent or parents acquired U.S. citizenship at birth and serves as proof of citizenship.
You may now request multiple copies of your Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240).
As of December 2010, the Certification of Report of Birth (DS-1350) is no longer issued. All previously issued FS-240 or DS-1350 documents are still valid as proof of identity, citizenship and for other legal purposes.

Important Due to Covid-19, processing times for passports are taking longer than normal for both standard and expedited services.
Passport Services issues millions of passports each year. A small percentage of these passports get issued with data errors that need to be corrected.
The types of errors that need to be corrected include the printing errors and spelling errors listed below.
|
|
If reported within one year of issuance, a new, corrected passport will be issued, which will be valid for 10 years from the date the new, correct book is issued.
If reported after one year of issuance, the new, corrected passport will be valid until the expiration date of the original, incorrect passport.
The procedure for correcting printing errors requires you submit the form and documents listed below.
- Passport Form DS 5504
- The passport book or card containing the error.
- A signed statement explaining the error.
- Acceptable evidence showing the correct data (if the error is on your personal data page)
- If it has been over 90 days since the passport was issued, new passport photo
On the outside of the envelope, write "Urgent Attention: Correction."
If it has been less than 90 days, send to the agency which processed your passport application. If it has been over 90 days, please send to the address on the DS-5504 form.
One thing you need to consider is the fact that passports with printing errors are not returned to the applicants. If want to keep the passport as a souvenir because it has visas or entry and exit stamps in it, then you will either need to continue using it until it expires or apply for a new passport. If you submit it for correction, you will not get it back.
There is no fee to get your passport corrected if requested at any time while the passport is still valid. When you submit a DS-5504 to correct a passport printing error, your request for a correction to your passport is processed as an expedited service. This means your new, corrected passport should be delivered to you within three weeks if you use two-way express mail.
What if you have an imminent trip abroad and can’t wait for three weeks? One option is to travel without getting the passport corrected. It is usually possible to travel internationally with small data errors in a passport.
Another option is to visit a regional processing center where you can get a new passport as quickly as the same day. Neither an appointment nor proof of travel will be required if you choose to appear at a regional agency to have the error corrected in person.
Finally, you can employ the services of a registered expedited passport courier service if you want to get the passport corrected within a few days but cannot personally visit a regional agency.

Renewing your passport can be a complex and time-consuming process. To ensure a smooth and successful renewal, it’s important to avoid common mistakes that can cause delays or even rejection.
In this blog, we will highlight 4 of the most common passport renewal mistakes and provide tips on how to avoid them. By following these tips, you can ensure a hassle-free renewal process and receive your updated passport in a timely manner.
Top 4 Passport Renewal Mistakes
1. Waiting Too Long To Renew Your Passport
It’s important to renew your passport well in advance to avoid processing delays or potential denial of your renewal application. Standard processing times for passport renewals can currently take up to 9 weeks, so make sure to renew at least 3 months before the passport’s expiration date.
If you’ve already made this mistake, and need a passport quickly, then using a private expediting company may be a good option to speed things up.
2. Incorrect Information On Your Passport Application
Providing incorrect information on your passport renewal application can have serious consequences. Inaccuracies such as your name, date of birth, or passport number can result in delays in processing or even denial of your passport renewal.
This can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience, as you may have to resubmit your application with the correct information. To avoid these issues, it’s essential to thoroughly review all personal information before submitting it.
Be sure to double-check all details to make sure they are accurate and up-to-date. If you have recently changed your name or any other personal information, make sure to update your passport before renewing to avoid potential inaccuracies.
By taking the time to review your information before submitting your passport renewal application, you can help ensure a smooth and successful renewal process.
3. Improper or Missing Documentation
Submitting improper or missing documentation can result in significant delays in the passport renewal process. It is crucial to make sure you have all of the required documents when renewing your passport.
This usually includes a completed application form and a current passport photo that meets the required standards.
Failing to provide these documents can cause your renewal application to be rejected or significantly delay the processing time. Before submitting your passport renewal application, make sure you have all of the necessary documents, and that they are all valid and up-to-date with the correct information.
4. Not Signing Your Passport Application
Neglecting to sign your passport renewal application may seem like a small detail, but it can have significant consequences. An unsigned form will be rejected by the processing agency, which will cause a delay in renewing your passport.
If you don’t sign your passport application, you may have to resubmit your renewal application with a signed form, adding additional time and frustration to the process.
To avoid this issue, it’s essential to remember to sign your application before submitting it. Make sure you have signed and dated the form in the designated spaces, and that your signature is legible.
Passport Renewal Processing Times
Processing times for U.S. passport renewals vary depending on the time of year and the type of service you require. Standard processing for a U.S. passport renewal currently takes up to 9 weeks.
However, it is important to note that processing times are only estimates and are subject to change based on a variety of factors, including the volume of applications being processed and the time of year.
During peak travel seasons, such as the summer months or holidays, processing times may be longer due to an increase in demand for passport services.
In order to ensure you receive your renewed passport in a timely manner, it’s important to plan ahead and allow enough time for the renewal process.
Routine Passport Service
When requesting standard or regular passport services at a Post Office or Passport Acceptance Facility, expect to wait up to 9 weeks for your passport to arrive.
Standard Expedited Passport Service
With standard expedited service for U.S. Passports at a Post Office or Passport Acceptance Facility, expect to wait up to 5 weeks for your passport to arrive.
Expedite Your Passport with A Private Expediting Company
While private expedited services vary, this option can get your passport back to you in as little as 7 business days.
Just like the traditional methods of applying, this time frame begins once your application and required documents have been received by the company expediting your passport.
Using a private company to expedite your U.S. passport can save time and help avoid delays and mistakes, resulting in a faster approval than standard or routine processing.
Personalized application review with a passport advisor can be paramount to avoiding passport delays.

A Canadian passport is a valuable piece of identification that allows Canadians to travel internationally. As of June 1, 2009, Canadian citizens have been required to present a valid passport in order to gain entry into the United States when traveling by air, and passports are highly recommended for Canadians entering the U.S. by land or water as well. In order to obtain a Canadian passport, you must complete an application and submit it to Passport Canada along with supporting documentation. It is important to ensure your application is as accurate as possible, but in the event that you make an error, it must be corrected before you use your passport for travel.
Correcting an error on the actual application
You may complete the Canadian passport application either by hand or electronically using a fillable PDF, which then can be printed for submission. If you make an error on the electronic version, you may simply correct the mistake and re-print the application. If you make an error on a handwritten application, do not use white out or any form of liquid correction, as this will void your application and will not be accepted by the passport’s office. For small errors, you may cross out the error and make a written correction, but for anything substantial, it would be best to begin a new application.
Proofread your application for accuracy. Errors in your application will result in either a rejection of your application or delays in processing time, so it is important to ensure the information on your passport application is accurate. Double check that dates are in the requested format and you have spelled your name correctly. Have someone else proofread your application.
Ensure your signature on the application fits within the box provided. If your signature goes outside the lines of the box, your application may be rejected or you will need to provide an additional signature, which will cause delays in the processing time.
Deliver your passport application in person. Although you can mail your application, if you choose to deliver the passport application in person to a passport office, a clerk will review the application and ensure there are no obvious errors. If an error is found, you will be able to re-do the application prior to submitting it, and this will prevent any further delays.
Correcting an errror AFTER submission or on an existing passport
If you realize you have made an error after submitting your passport application, you must immediately contact Passport Canada. It is likely the error will be caught during the application process and you will be contacted to provide supporting documentation to correct the error or you will be asked to submit a new application.
If you receive a passport and notice an error, you must immediately contact Passport Canada. Errors in the spelling of your name or date of birth are the most serious errors and must be fixed before you use your passport. If you are outside of Canada, you may contact a Canadian Government Office that provides passport services abroad.
The Canadian passport provides a spot to fill in your address. If you make a mistake writing your address in your passport, or if your address changes, this does not invalidate your passport. Cross out the mistake or outdated address on Page 4 of your passport and write your new/correct address in the space above. Do not use whiteout or any form of correction fluid in your passport. If you do not have sufficient space to write your new address, place a separate piece of paper inside your passport with your updated address information. You may staple this page to Page 4 of your passport.
If your appearance changes significantly, it is recommended by Passport Canada that you apply for a new passport. The passport photo is intended to be an accurate likeness to your physical appearance, and if the photo in your passport no longer accurately depicts your image, you should apply for a new passport. It is not possible to simply update the photo on your passport; you are required to apply for a new passport and pay the applicable fees, even if your existing passport still is valid.
Tip
-
Make use of the instruction sheet provided with the passport application to ensure the accuracy of your application.
There is now a Simplified Renewal Form available for Canadian adults in Canada or the USA to renew a passport that has not been expired for more than one year.
Tip
-
Be wary of any organization or website that offers «support» or assistance in completing your passport application.
There are no services or outside organizations that can speed the processing time of your passport application.
No one should charge you for information on how to obtain a Canadian passport.
