Hey all,

I’d like to try using the Numba package to try the just-in-time compiling feature, and see if I can speed up the execution of one of my scripts.

I’m using 64-bit Ubuntu, and working in a virtual-environment (Python 3.8), and trying to install Numba with pip:

pip3 install --user numba

This spits out a load of errors — full output of the command can bee seen here.

On first read through, it looks like it’s trying to either use or create a symbolic link to LLVM_CONFIG….

So I tried installing llvm-10 and all the rest of the useful packages via apt:

$ sudo apt install llvm-10 llvm-10-dev llvm-10-doc llvm-10-examples llvm-10-runtme llvm-10-tools

Which worked fine, then tried both adding a symbolic link to my bin, and exporting the variable:

$ export LLVM_CONFIG='/usr/bin/llvm-config-10'

and re-running the pip command, but no success… Most of the threads I find are for previous versions of Ubuntu, and nothing seems to be up to date to 18.04… Or they all have basically the same steps, ( as above) which just don’t seem to work.. e.g. I tried this thread already.

Any magic bullets?

So, I went back to the install pages from the Numba manual and gave it a read, where I see it states:

This will download all of the needed dependencies as well. You do not need to have LLVM installed to use Numba (in fact, Numba will ignore all LLVM versions installed on the system) as the required components are bundled into the llvmlite wheel.

So I removed all traces of llvm from my system, try to install numba with pip and get the same error stack as previous…

So I then re-installed all llvm-10 packages again, re-created the symbolic links in my /usr/bin:

$ sudo -i
$ cd /usr/bin
$  rm -r llvm-config
$  ln -s llvm-config-10 llvm-config
$  ln -s llvm-config-10 LLVM_CONFIG

Then back to my venv and try installing llvmlite with pip again.. which gives me errors still, but new ones…. full dump here

The «SVML not detected» error brings me back to here which again points at LLVM_CONFIG not being set up correctly, but it is! e.g.:

$ LLVM_CONFIG --version
10.0.1
