Hello everyone, I have a rather strange issue. I’m relatively new to Linux, but not exactly. (I have a Laptop with Linux Mint as well, but that’s not the subject of today).

The subject of today is my desktop computer. There’s actually two issues with it, but only one is networking related. So, the networking issue is I can’t connect to WiFi, which is obvious. I have a TRENDnet USB adapter (model number TEW-805UB), that is connected to the computer by an Ivetto USB hub, (The 7 port one). Strangely enough, it sees the TrendNet USB when I go to “Driver Manager”, but when I go to the Network logo in the bottom right, I don’t even got the option to turn WiFi on or off. It only says “Wired cable unplugged”. Also, in Driver Manager, it says;

Hello HAWR, I tried that just now, but unfortunately I get an error when I try upgrading the kernel to 5.13.

The output given is the following;

Also, if I switch the mirror to the global mirror from LayerOnline, on the main Update Manager page itself, it says “Please switch to another Linux Mint mirror. Your APT configuration is corrupt.”

However, I also noticed something else about this particular USB adapter. Since it came with a driver CD, I put it in, and there are drivers for Windows and Mac, but not for Linux. Then after finding that out, I went to the manufacturer’s website and found they actually don’t make a Linux version of drivers for any of their adapters that I found. Maybe I just need to buy a USB adapter that is compatible with Linux?

Fortunately it can wait too until I get another adapter, if that is the issue here. I didn’t actually install Linux over Windows 11. I just have another USB with it installed on that that I’m booting from. I’ll update here tomorrow when the new adapter comes in.

LM 20.3 — No ethernet, no wifi driver.

Post by Ima Nanachronism » Wed Aug 17, 2022 12:42 pm

I installed LM 20.3, Cinnamon 5.2.7, Linux Kernal 5.4.0-91-generic on to my old Dell (AMD E1-6010 APU with AMD Radeon R2 Graphics x 2, with a Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz) Broadcom Network adapter) laptop computer.

I am limited by circumstance and have no ethernet access but I can (when equipped) access Wifi. Before installing the OS, I tested whether I could get a connected (through Wifi) situation without ethernet. I was successful by simply using my USB ISO-image et al and the Driver Manager.

Oddly, subsequent to the install, my driver manager simply did not wish to complete the task again! The manager looked for hardware drivers, found with . As I applied the changes, I was informed: «An error occurred», «pk-client-error-quark: Cannot download packages whilst offline (257). Now this did not occur when I was using the bootable .ISO USB.

I searched your forums and found a link to place , on to the desktop, double-click on the file and install the driver this way. Now I was notified: «Failed to download package files» — «Check your Internet connection.» Details: «Failed to fetch http://-archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/-g/glibc/libc6-«, «dev_2.31-0ubuntu9.9_amd64.deb Could not resolve ‘archive.ubuntu.com’. Apparently, this required the installation of 5 packages from: Ubuntu Developers .

I am at a loss as to how to resolve this now. Can I install the drivers required to access Wifi without direct access to the internet?

Cannot install wireless drivers

Hi all, first a bit of information.

I have created a live install on a usb drive and it works fine on my MacBook Air running Big Sur 11.6.2. It also works on my iMac running High Sierra 10.13. each time I use it I have to install the additional drivers for my wireless device but it works.

I used the live install to then create a full installation on a large (32 Gb) usb drive. It loads on the MacBook Air but it does not get recognised by High Sierra on the iMac at all so I cannot load it through the boot loader. This is the first issue I would like to find a solution to if possible.

Although the MacBook Air recognises and loads the full installation and allows me to access file etc. it also does not load the Broadcom drivers. However, when I access «Additional Drivers» and try to install the drivers for the device it recognises, it tells me it cannot do it without an internet connection! But I need the drivers installed to have an internet connection as the MacBook Air does not have an ethernet port and relies entirely on wireless for internet access.

I added (by ticking the box) the CD Rom with ubuntu 20.04 «Focal Fossa» (which I assume is the full installation files on the USB)as a source but it still gives an error. I added the original live install usb to the machine’s second USB port to see if it would recognise it as a software source but it did not and I cannot see how to make it do so.

I need to find a solution that allows me to install the drivers without accessing the internet but I do not know which files I will need or where to access them. They must be on the live usb (and probably also on the full install usb even though it is not finding them) but I do not know how to find or use them. This is the second and main issue I need a solution for.

The device is recognised as a Broadcom and gives the following information in the additional drivers page:

Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source from bcmwl-kernel-source (proprietary)

The error message I get is:

pk-client-error-quark: Cannot download packages whilst offline (257)

Can anyone help me out of this loop please?

Hello DystoniaGamer,

what strikes me independently of the wifi problem is that you have not loaded a graphics driver. So you should upgrade to the latest 5.13 kernel in the Update Manager > View > Linux kernels and reboot

Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Ellesmere [Radeon Pro WX 5100] driver: N/A bus ID: 01:00.0
chip ID: 1002:67c7
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: ati,fbdev

OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.0.3
compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

After the reboot post additionally the outputs with plugged-in wifi adapter of

Code: Select all

You could change the mirror servers and try it again: Update Manager > Edit > Package Sources.

When I go to select a mirror for the Main (una), the two options are a Global one from LayerOnline and an American one from Linux Mint, however they both say Unreachable. When I change them over from one to the other, it gives me a different error, this time saying;

Code: Select all

Failed to download repository information. Check your internet connection.

Clicking the Details dropdown menu gives this output;

Code: Select all

E:The Repository ‘cdrom://Linux Mint 20.3_Una_-Release amd64 20220104 focal Release’ does not have a Release file.

Fortunately it can wait too until I get another adapter, if that is the issue here. I didn’t actually install Linux over Windows 11. I just have another USB with it installed on that that I’m booting from. I’ll update here tomorrow when the new adapter comes in.

I don’t think so. Can you post in between the outputs with plugged-in wifi adapter of

Unfortunately my house doesn’t have Ethernet, so that’s I was using the USB WiFi adapter. But it apparently only works on Windows and Mac OS, not Linux. So that’s why I’m buying another adapter for WiFi now. When it comes I’ll update here whether it works or not. Hopefully it does.

Unfortunately, the Network applet on the bottom right is still showing no connection. But when I click on it, it now shows my iPhone, along with ‘cable unplugged’, even though I have it plugged in via USB. The same is said for the Ethernet Connection. Is there anything else I can do to fix this issue?

Then please download from another PC the rtl8812au-dkms package from the following website (direct download link):

http://ports.ubuntu.com/pool/universe/r … .4_all.deb

Then copy it to your desktop and run it by double-clicking on it in the file manager. You need to reboot and Secure Boot must be disabled in Bios:

I was able to install the driver to my laptop and place it into a USB drive I had lying around. However, when I installed it and rebooted, it wasn’t there any longer.

Secure boot is disabled in BIOS. The mokutil command produces this output;

Code: Select all

SecureBoot is disabled
Platform is in Setup Mode

I’m guessing it has to do with the fact that I’m in Setup Mode? I never formally installed Mint onto my computer. I’m using it via USB drive. Reason being I anticipated something like this happening. I tried to both reboot the system and restart it, and the driver was no longer installed after both a reboot and a restart. Should I actually install Mint on my computer to see what happens or no? Also, I’m incredibly sorry to waste most of your day like this. I genuinely appreciate the help.

I never formally installed Mint onto my computer.

That’s the reason. You have to install first LM on your Computer, but you need an internet connection for that. Can you really not make a wired connection to a router or possibly USB tethering with an Android smartphone?

Maybe with an Android. I (technically can) with an iPhone. It hasn’t worked yet though. But I mean, I can probably ask one of my parents for their phones if need be. They have Androids. Would it be better to use one of their Androids or my iPhone?

In a previous you described that it didn’t work with your iPhone, so I think it’s worth to try it with an Android.

Tethering works with an Android phone. Wonder why it wasn’t working for my iPhone? Nevertheless, now I’ll install LM and get back to you when it’s finished. Thank you for the help!

When LM is installed and you will have run the first updates and a reboot, you can install the driver for your adapter in the driver manager.

LM is installed, I updated everything including the Kernel, and I updated the driver for the adapter. But still can’t even select Wireless in the Network applet.

  найдено «отклонение /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1 в /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1.distrib из-за nvidia-340»

sudo dpkg-divert --remove {package name}т.е. получается так:

sudo dpkg-divert --remove /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1потом без «1», потом еще пара пакетов libGLE.so.
Затем

sudo apt-get install libnvidia-gl-510Затем

Feel free to correct me if I was mistaken, but I guess we are talking about two network services which is networkd and NetworkManager.

As I understood, Ubuntu Server uses networkd to manage and NetworkManager stay disable, but Cockpit utilizes NetworkManager to do his magic.

I just did a Ubuntu Server 21.10 fresh install, installed Cockpit, and the issue continues.

So, the solution is simple:

  1. Configure NetworkManager properly.
  2. Configure networkd to use NetworkManager.

NetworkManager uses /etc/network/interfaces for the interfaces, /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf for the main config and have the suit of commands like nmcli and nmtui.

networkd uses /etc/netplan/*.yaml for the interfaces config and I don’t know much about it :(

The step-by-step

First, I create the interface’s file for my two ethernet cards enp2s0 and enp3s0 with static IP address. This can be different for you.
$ sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

allow-hotplug enp3s0 enp2s0

iface enp3s0 inet static
address 192.168.25.3/24
gateway 192.168.25.1

iface enp2s0 inet static
address 192.168.25.30/24
gateway 192.168.25.1

Would be like this if those NICs was getting a dynamic address

auto lo enp3s0 enp2s0
iface lo inet loopback
iface enp2s0 inet dhcp
iface enp3s0 inet dhcp

Than, I edited NetworkManager to manage those NICs
$ sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

[ifupdown]
managed=true

Second, I created a file called 50-cloud-init.yaml and removed the file 00-installer-config.yaml that already exists, but I guess it could be the same. As I understood, when we tell to networkd to renderer with NetworkManager, any other entry is ignored.
$ sudo nano /etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml

network:
version: 2
renderer: NetworkManager

After that, try, generate and apply this config
$ sudo netplan try
$ sudo netplan generate
$ sudo netplan apply

At the end, I restarted the NetworkManager service.
$ sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager

This did the job for me =D
