Latest Nvidia driver issue — SOLVED

Is there a problem with the latest driver installation or have I hosed something up and If the later, what should I do to fix it?

Thanks

After installing LM20.3 Xfce, the nouveau driver should be installed. If you want to use a proprietary Nvidia driver, you have to select one in Driver Manager and install it. I presume that is what you meant you did.

Some others have also seen a similar message when trying to install the Nvidia-510 driver. Please provide the output of dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia and enclose the results in code tags.

Please also give us information about your hardware by providing the output of inxi -SMCGx .

Re: Latest Nvidia driver issue

Post by luggw1 » Fri Feb 18, 2022 4:49 pm

Yes, the 510 drive installed through the Software update process and then I went to the Driver Manager to upgrade to 510. That’s where I received the errors quoted above. Sorry, I didn’t make that clearer.

Here’s the output you requested:

Re: Latest Nvidia driver issue

Post by SMG » Fri Feb 18, 2022 6:02 pm

If the driver installed through Update Manager, then why would you go to Driver Manager? All you should have to do was to reboot the computer for the newer driver to be loaded at boot time if it was installed already.

However, the data you posted, indicates the Nvidia-510 was not installed. Did you receive error messages when the software update process was happening? Is that why you went to Driver Manager?

Re: Latest Nvidia driver issue

Post by SMG » Fri Feb 18, 2022 7:39 pm

I’ve been comparing your output to some others I have helped. One other person had the same errors as you, but that person has MATE and right now there are problems installing Nvidia-510 on MATE so we did not troubleshooting the errors yet.

Someone else with Cinnamon had problems with the Nvidia-510, but they had other issues (not what you have). In that case, we ended up manually removing all the Nvidia driver files and after that completed successfully, they were able to install the Nvidia-510 using Driver Manager. We could do that, if you want. Let me know and I can give you directions.

However, I found Problem with apt and nvidia 450 on ubuntu 20.04 where the user did a force overwrite which cleared this issue (which had the same 268 error you saw).

If you want to give that a try, I suggest taking a Timeshift snapshot and then checking to see if the deb file in the first line below exists on your install (check to make sure I have the numbers correct) and then run the following two lines one at a time:

Re: Latest Nvidia driver issue

Post by luggw1 » Fri Feb 18, 2022 11:40 pm

So, I thought I’d try your force overwrite suggestion. I first looked in the /var/cache/apt/archives/ folder for the file you specified in the code section and found there are no files related to the 510 version of the driver at all. This makes me wonder if the 510 version actually installed correctly.

In answer to your earlier question, no, there were no errors reported when the 510 version installed through the S/W manager. I always go to the Device Manager just to verify that the S/W installation did what it was supposed to as far as moving my driver to the latest version. In this case, it didn’t and when I tried. well here we are.

I looked briefly in the S/W Manager to see if 510 showed as installed, but quickly realized it doesn’t show up as a convenient item I can check graphically. How can I go about checking this?

Thanks for the help

Re: Latest Nvidia driver issue

Will the file I’m looking for show up in the folder if I select the 510 driver?

Re: Latest Nvidia driver issue

Post by SMG » Sat Feb 19, 2022 9:04 am

Select the driver and install and then, if there are error messages, check that folder.

We can cross our fingers that if the error was on the package side that perhaps it might have been fixed and you will no longer get the error and it will install without problems.

Re: Latest Nvidia driver issue

Post by luggw1 » Sat Feb 19, 2022 11:22 pm

OK, I tried what you suggested, but the 510 files never appear in the /var/cache/apt/archives folder. I did get the ame error that started this whole thread. Do you suppose the missing files are part of the problem?

How would I go about reinstalling the 510 drivers from scratch?

Thanks
Bill Lugg

Re: Latest Nvidia driver issue

We would delete all the files you have installed right now from the command line and then you could try Driver Manager again. If that does not work, then you could install the package from the command line.

I suggest taking a Timeshift snapshot before starting.
To remove all the current Nvidia packages, you would run

Then try installing the Nvidia-510 from Driver Manager.

If you get the same error, try installing from the command line with

and then reboot for the driver to load.

Let me know if you have any questions. If you get error messages, post the complete message.

[SOLVED]initramfs-tools and dpkg error while installing Broadcom driver

Post by scusa » Tue Nov 24, 2020 3:34 am

Apologies if I have chosen the wrong section to post this query, as you can see, I am very new to Linux environment and the Linux Mint forums. I finally made the jump to Linux Mint from Windows 10 about 3 weeks back and I regret not having done it earlier. All was good and I was learning with usage till last night when I got a prompt from ‘Update Centre’ and upgraded some components including the Kernel. The Broadcom wireless drivers stopped working this morning(first boot after upgrade) and I tried everything to fix it but to no avail.

1) During graphical install of BCM43142 using ‘ Driver Manager‘, I run into this every time:

pk-client-error-quark: Error while installing package: installed bcmwl-kernel-source package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10 (313)

2) Tried running: dpkg —configure -a

5) Finally, I tried installing initramfs-tools itself.

Any help in resolving the issue will be highly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time out to go through the issue I posted.

P.S: Tried dpkg —configure -a —force-depends as well, not fixing the issue.

Hi Sleeper12, thank you very much for replying. I did run it with sudo, just forgot to mention that here. BTW, managed to solve it. Turns out that the issue was wrt free space available in /boot partition. The free space available was autoremove and autoclean:

«sudo apt purge linux-headers-* linux-headers-*-generic linux-image-*-generic linux-image-extra-*-generic linux-signed-image-*-generic» — where * is the version number. So, if the kernel is 5.4.0-26, then the command will look like- sudo apt purge linux-headers-5.4.0-26 linux-headers-5.4.0-26-generic linux-image-5.4.0-26-generic linux-image-extra-5.4.0-26-generic linux-signed-image-5.4.0-26-generic

I know it’s not a good idea to tamper with it manually, but it was the only way I could free up some space and solve the issue. All dpkg and initramfs-tools related issues resolved after this. However, «pk-client-error-quark: Error while installing package: installed bcmwl-kernel-source package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10 (313)» this error continued during graphical install. Here’s what I did: —

(a) sudo apt purge *broadcom*
(b) sudo apt purge *bcmwl*
(c) sudo apt install broadcom-sta-dkms
(d) Restart system

Solved the issue of BCM43142 wireless adapter not functioning in my Mint system.

  найдено «отклонение /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1 в /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1.distrib из-за nvidia-340»

sudo dpkg-divert --remove {package name}т.е.

sudo dpkg-divert --remove /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so.1потом без «1», потом еще пара пакетов libGLE.so.
Затем

sudo apt-get install libnvidia-gl-510Затем

@sleeper12,

From https://askubuntu.com/questions/1241362 … atus-10-fo, I got the idea to try the following:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/bcmwl-kernel-support*
sudo dpkg --configure -D 777 bcmwl-kernel-support
sudo apt -f install

I rebooted, and I just tried your suggestion, and here is the result:

torrey@LM-Cinn:~$ sudo apt purge bcmwl-6.30.223.271+bdcom && sudo apt install bcmwl-6.30.223.271+bdcom

Driver manager shows bcmwl-kernel-source as being installed, even though System Reports (Menu, Administration, System Reports) alerts me to open Driver Manager to install bcmwl-kernel-source. So I went back and tried your first step, and this is what I got:

Code: Select all

torrey@LM-Cinn:~$ sudo apt purge bcmwl-kernel-source && sudo apt install bcmwl-kernel-source

The following packages will be REMOVED:

Then I tried your last step again, and this is what I got:

@sleeper12,

I did do these steps earlier, but they didn’t get me what I needed. The wireless adapter was recognized, but it’s wasn’t picking up any wifi networks.

Code: Select all

apt purge bcmwl-kernel-source
apt-get install broadcom-sta-source
apt-get install broadcom-sta-dkms
apt-get install broadcom-sta-common

I tried the other steps from that link, and it seemed to install bcmwl-kernel-source without issue. The wireless adapter is recognized, but it’s not picking up any wifi networks. I believe this is the correct package though. It was noticing wifi networks before.

pk-client-error-quark: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libllvm11:

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
