Is pgbouncer capable of handling a crashed server connection in this case, without causing an exception with the app itself?

I am seeing this sporadically on GCP, using a simple config like this:

max_db_connections = 90
default_pool_size = 90
max_client_conn = 100
log_connections = 0
log_disconnections = 0

It looks like «server conn crashed» usually would happen when reading fails:

— so it is not related to creating a connection only, and therefore it is not really possible to retry in this case always I assume.

Just for reference: #347 (and my comment there: #347 (comment)).

For anyone running in to the same issue with Npgsql , we fixed it by turning off the pooling options that enable on default, by adding Pooling=false to the connection string. This is also suggested in their documentation. My guess is that Npgsql keeps some connections that was already closed by pgbouncer.

hi, i faced the issue and tried the solution Pooling=false, which seem to have helped. But then we switched from Azure Single Postgre server to Flexible Postgre with pgbouncer. it seems in flexible server this flag is affecting pgbouncer performance whenever there’s a high load as if pooling it not working properly and we get various connection timeout and drops. so removed it for now, and if the original issue appears again will see how else to fix. added instead ‘No Reset On Close=true’ in line with what’s mentioned here:

Sometimes i have network problems and the server side postgres loses connection to my app.

How can i set pgbouncer to reset the connections after a few seconds of this connection issue?

Right now it only reconnects if someone refreshes the web app, but i would like it to do this itself.

I just bumped into a number of pooler error: server conn crashed? . For me, they were caused by Postgres’s idle_in_transaction_session_timeout — pgBouncer doesn’t seem to detect the reason why server dropped the connection and so reports this generic message.

I wonder if it would be possible to give more detailed error message in case connections gets dropped due to idle_in_transaction_session_timeout ?

There are various timeout settings that can help in case of network issues, such as query_timeout , query_wait_timeout , and client_idle_timeout . Which one of these is appropriate depends on the specific circumstances.

Also, the original reporter might be looking for the server_login_retry setting.

Pooler Error: pgbouncer cannot connect to server #239

We are using pgbouncer on windows machine and postgress db on centos.
So problem is pgbouncer is failing intermittently, log says that ‘Pooler Error: pgbouncer cannot connect to server’

PgBouncer Connection Pooling: What to do when persistent connectivity is lost

(This is part two of my technical response to a series of questions about the use of pgbouncer and what you need to look out for. Part one can be found here)

So, in Part One of this blog we completed the installation of PgBouncer, configuration and a brief network timeout using PgBouncer with no problem at all. But what happens with a minute’s downtime, and what if we’re in the middle of a transaction while it happens? Does PgBouncer maintain connectivity, without error, even when the connection to the database is catastrophically lost?

On our master database, we now start a session and issue a command.

On the target database box we take the NIC (network interface) down for a minute, and issue another command while connectivity is lost:

Meanwhile, back in PgBouncer:

. Which now hangs, however, when the database NIC is back up, psql returns.

Looks good! The SELECT is held in flight during the minute long network outage, and simply reconnects and completes when it can.

Now for something a little more advanced, let’s restart the database on the remote server, and see what happens.

A partial success. Our psql session connecting to PgBouncer was persistent, but we get an error message telling us that the server connection has been reset. However, immediately re-issuing the statement we get the result we want without having to reconnect to PgBouncer.

So, how do we avoid getting the error message about the server connection reset, and having to re-issue our statement?

Well, the simple answer is we change the ‘pool_mode’ = ‘transaction’.

This is taken from the official pgbouncer documentation (slightly amended)

Whether server_reset_query should be run in all pooling modes. When this setting is off (default), the server_reset_query will be run only in pools that are in sessions-pooling mode. Connections in transaction-pooling mode should not have any need for reset query.

It is a workaround for broken setups that run apps that use session features over transaction-pooled PgBouncer. It changes non-deterministic breakage to deterministic breakage — client always lose their state after each transaction.

So, this parameter would be a workaround for our problem while in session mode. But, do we want to hack a fix or do the right thing? Of course, we want to do the right thing, so we make our pool_mode (at a minimum) transaction level, which in turn should make our sessions persistent.

Therefore, rather than ‘fix’ our broken PgBouncer, we will do the sensible thing and move to transaction-level pooling:

. And restart PgBouncer.

And now, on the PgBouncer side, we reconnect and…

Success, once more. Next, we will go on to look at what to do if you have a complete failover.

Периодически приложение выдает ошибку «server conn crashed». В это время на pgbouncere в логах:

«pooler error: server conn crashed?»

на постгресе в логах:

I have established pgbouncer-rr for redshift. I used docker to generate image of pgbouncer-rr and run the container with that image in AWS ECS, and my container is attached with a load balancer which listen on PORT 6432 and forwards request directly to pgbouncer container. Service is running fine without any error but when i’m trying to connect to redshift through pgbouncer-rr using loadbalancer DNS, it’s throwing me «(Jdbc)(11380)Null Pointer Exception» in SQLworkbench

@patlolladurgaprasad8_gitlab If you are getting Java exceptions in SQLworkbench, then you need to look there. PgBouncer doesn’t cause Java exceptions.

@petere, I work with @puneetarora_07_twitter and we have pool sizes per database (3 databases).

the average pool_size per DB is around 30

It doesn’t look like we’re exhausting the pools so we’re wondering what else could be causing the client_login_timeout

I have 2 pools, a write pool and a query pool. If the write pool and its reserve get full, my understanding is that PGBouncer keeps listen_backlog number of pending connections in a queue. If listen_backlog reaches the limit, does that mean connections for both the write and query pools are dropped?

Hi all, I’m curious about a statement on the pgbouncer FAQ: upgrading pgbouncer w/o dropping cxns, it says: «This cannot be done with TLS connections.»

Does anyone know if there is a fundamental problem with doing this, or is it a matter of work that hasn’t been done (presumably it’s not trivial :) )?

Hey @jschaf, I think the listen_backlog works in conjunction with query_wait_timeout. If a query is in the backlog for longer than the query_wait_timeout, it will get dropped at that point

I don’t understand pgbouncer logs. For example, when it’s printing «LOG stats: 548 xacts/s, 548 queries/s, in 125426 B/s, out 183366 B/s, xact 714 us, query 714 us, wait 23 us», I don’t believe that the average query time is 714 microseconds — explain analyze select 1; requested over a unix socket yields 0.036 ms total, which is 36 microseconds. What am I missing?

@patlolladurgaprasad8_gitlab did you find a solution to the «bad-af» server dns lookup failed? i have hit similar when deploying a pgbouncer v1.9 container. I had pgbouncer v1.8 container before that worked fine. after getting the bad-af server dns error, i even tried going back to the previous version but get the same bad-af error now.

hi, We are in the process of building poc to work with pgbouncer pools. Our deployment scenario includes a network load balancer that forwards requests to a group of ec2 instances that are auto scaled and each ec2 runs pgbouncer. I understand that the pgbouncer stats are available only on the local ec2 instance through psql where pgbouncer runs. These stats are available through the virtual pgbouncer database. There are pgbouncer fdw installs such as https://github.com/CrunchyData/pgbouncer_fdw to push the stats to a database table. Question is — what is the best possible way to gather aggregate statistics from all pgbouncer instances. This aggregate can be postgres db or cloudwatch.

My assumption is that using SET application_name from the client in transaction pooling mode is basically useless, unless PGBouncer does some magic that re-sends it every time a connection is assigned to client, and I don’t think it does that.

I’m also wondering if the application_name_add_host setting could even work in transaction pooling mode. Sounds like something that would only work in session pooling mode … again, unless PGBouncer re-sets it every time a backend connection is attached to a client

Seems to me like the only useful thing would be to set the application name by each entry in [databases]so you at least know which virtual DB a query is coming from

hi, I’m new to pgbouncer and am confused by the difference between avg_wait_time and maxwait,
I’m seeing spikes of up to 1728043 for avg_wait_time, but I never see anything but 0’s for maxwait and maxwait_us

Is there a way to configure pgbouncer to completely disconnects from a backend database when client connections are idle? I have an application that rarely accesses the database and I am trying to get the database to hibernate and restore using AWS Serverless and AutoPause, but the persistent pgbouncer connection is stopping it from hibernating.

Hi folks, I have a question related to handling of server connections by pgbouncer in transaction mode, Looking through the source I see that pgbouncer releases server connections https://github.com/pgbouncer/pgbouncer/blob/ad6b5af4e27c8e9059b7a1e7dd541ea3b7c72624/src/server.c#L554 on receiving SBUF_EV_FLUSH event from postgres db. When is this event sent by postgres ? What is the scenario? Is this event sent by postgres after a commit is issued by a client? I need this information to justify the throughput gains of pgbouncer to my client

i’m getting this when trying to run pgbouncer -V, how do I fix it? «pgbouncer: error while loading shared libraries: libevent-2.1.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory»

my system did an auto-upgrade from 1.8.x to 1.13 this morning. afterwards the systemd unit stopped being able to start bouncer

i could start it manually using -d and whatnot

downgrading the package to 1.8 fixed the issue

one thing i noticed is that the newer execstart command did not include the -d switch

ExecStart=/usr/bin/pgbouncer -q ${BOUNCERCONF}

the old one was ExecStart=/usr/bin/pgbouncer -d -q ${BOUNCERCONF}

when i started version 1.13 manually i used the -d switch

all efforts to determine why it wasn’t starting failed

nothing helpful in the journal or its own log etc.

pgbouncer 1.13 supports Type=notify service units. I suspect one thing that could have happened is that you have a service unit written that way but pgbouncer was not compiled with systemd support. What package are you using, what’s your OS, what is the full content of the service unit file?

i think it’s 7.4 but anyway, it updates automatically

the unit was switched in the package from type=forked to notify

i manually tried every option in the unit that i could, including all other types, and none of them would start

i even tried adding the -d switch, and that didn’t work. i think the problem is somehow bouncer is not reporting to systemd that it has started

i also tried troubleshooting on a centos 7 server, and i could not get this same package to start, ie. it had all the same problems as the rhel7 server

i think if you look at the spec file, systemd support was compiled

maybe i’m using an unstable package that is not really intended for prod
