Post error 1786 slot x drive array recovery needed

. The following SCSI drive(s) need Automatic Data Recovery: SCSI Port Y: SCSI ID Z

Select F1 to retry Automatic Data Recovery to drive. Select F2 to continue without starting Automatic Data Recovery.

Audible Beeps: None

Possible Cause: System is in Interim Data Recovery Mode and a failed or replacement drive has not yet been rebuilt. This message is displayed if the F2 key was pressed during a previous boot or if the F1 key was pressed during a previous boot and the system rebooted before the rebuild of the drive completed.

  • Perform one of the suggested actions:
    • Press the F1 key to retry Automatic Data Recovery to the drive. Data will be automatically restored to drive X when a failed drive has been replaced, or to the original drive if it is working again without errors.
    • Press the F2 key to continue without recovery of data to the drive. The failed drive will not be rebuilt and the system will continue to operate in a failed state of Interim Data Recovery Mode.
  • If drive recovery is not successful, run ADU for more information.
    • If the replacement drive failed, replace with another drive.
    • If the rebuild was aborted due to a read error from another physical drive in the array, back up all readable data on the array, run ADU, and then restore the data.

Proliant G5 DL380 RAID: Drive Failure/Issues (HP Smart Array P400)

Preface: I have little to no experience with HP servers so if I’m missing anything obvious please let me know. Most of my interactions are with Dell servers but this particular client has been hanging on to some older HPs. They have a G5 DL380 running a P400 controller configured with has 2 logical volumes.

Logical volume 1 is a pair of 150GB SAS drives in RAID 1+0 in bays 7 & 8. This is the boot volume for Windows. Drive in bay 7 showed steady amber light, indicating some sort of problem. Bay 8 blinking green.

Logical volume 2 consists of 4 drives in RAID 5 in bays 1-4. This is a data volume only. All drives are ok with solid green.

Upon boot the P400 controller reported error codes 1794 — Array Accelerator Battery Charge Low and 1786 — Slot 1 Drive Array Recovery Needed . The following disk drive(s) need Automatic Data Recovery: Port 1I: Box 1: Bay 7 . See pic for reference: http://i.imgur.com/FCFdS9l.jpg

Continuing with either F1 or F2 results in a «non-system disk or disk error» message, see pic for reference: http://i.imgur.com/qV5Kw5o.jpg  . I’m not sure what has been compromised on this volume to where Windows cannot find any of the relevant boot info. From my understanding the array should be functional but degraded with bay 7’s drive having some sort of issue but bay 8’s drive operational.

Powered off the server for 5-10 minutes to let it «cool down», started it back up, and entered the P400 config via F8. Logical volume 1 now showed Status as RECOVERING with both drives listed as OK. LEDs on those 2 drives were both flashing green with no amber, indicating a rebuild was in progress as far as I could tell.

After leaving it alone for a bit the rebuild seemed to be complete as the status of the logical drive changed from RECOVERING to OK at this point. We thought this was a good sign, however now the drive in bay 7 was flashing green and amber.

Restart the server and now we get error 1794 (same as before) but instead of the 1786 of before we now see 1720 — S.M.A.R.T. Hard Drive(s) Detect Imminent Failure Port 1I: Box 1: Bay 7 — obviously indicating something is wrong with our bay 7 drive.

I’m a little confused now as to whether or array is still intact or recoverable in some way, or if something has happened and the entire array is lost. Are there any other options to test/troubleshoot and see if bay 8’s drive can function alone in a degraded state? Would it be advisable to physically remove bay 7’s drive from the server for the time being? The «n on-system disk or disk error» is a little worrisome and doesn’t leave me feeling terribly optimistic.

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Drive Array Rebuilding, HP System Management says No Action Required

I’m not a server expert.

Our 8-year-old HP ProLiant ML350 G6 has three logical RAID 1 arrays, and a Smart Array P410i controller.

After a reboot, System Management Homepage says that Logical Drive 3 is rebuilding the drive that’s in Bay 6.

When I click through to that drive’s page, it says No Action Required.

But in the Event Log, I see «POST Error: 1786-Drive Array Recovery Needed». And HP Insight Diagnostics tells me that my hard drive has failed. I guess I need to trust this message?

And, maddeningly, I can’t find a phone number for HP Enterprise Parts Store. How important is it that I replace this with the HP part number, rather than finding a good SAS 7k 2TB drive?

the diagnostics should be true and you have a failed drive. The array is rebuilding as one drive is now missing. Take a look at the drives and in theory you should see a drive with a red light on and that will be the failed drive.

That’s what I was expecting, but the drive’s light is still green, the state of the array is rebuilding. It’s only when I open Insight Diagnostics that it tells me that:

«This drive has experienced/recorded error conditions reported by diagnosis and requires replacement.
Perform the following steps before replacing a drive:

Have a known good data backup.
Replace the failed drive with one that is the same as, or functionally equivalent to, the original drive.
Do not replace the drive if there is another drive that is failed, offline, or in the process of being rebuilt.

I’m supposing that this is a clear enough message, even though System Management still says the drive is good.

Btw, buying from HP Enterprise Parts was not an easy experience. Surprisingly so- they’ve always been great to deal with when I’ve had things in warranty. I guess this isn’t exactly they want to focus customer support on. But the replacement is on its way here.

    You can load whilst online (if you don’t have it installed already) the HP System Tools the navigate to HP Smart Array Config Utility — Diagnostics

    Check also the Integrated Log Manager is loaded

    If not enough info you may need to take it offline — Boot the HP Smartstart CD —  Maintenance — HP Insight Diags and select the items you want to check (or all of them)

      Have you checked on the HP Smart Array Utility?  This should be your starting point!!!

      It could be anything:

      1-) Disk failed

      2-) Disk waiting to be RAID

      3-) Disk incompatibility

      4-) RAID controller has a fault

      5-) Etc…

      I am getting the following messages upon bootup:

      1.) 1720 Slot1 Drive Array SMART Hard Drives Detect Imminent Failure Port 1: Box 1: Bays 5,8

           Do not replace drive unless all other drives in array are on-line

      2.) 1717 — Slot 1 Drive Array — Disk drive reporting overheated condition port 1: box 1

           Bays 5, 8 

      Now I have taken the drives out of bays 5, 8 to check if they are heating up but they are not. They are just warm like the other drives installed.

      If these are not HP drives then the status reporting from the drive may be inaccurate or missing.

      HP drives have particular Firmware loaded which provides status information to the HP controller.

      The orange flashing light from 146GB dual port drive (bay 8) has gone away and status on it shows normal. However, the issue with 146GB single port drive (bay 5) still remains. The flashing orange has turned to solid orange and I am getting the following message on startup:

      1786 — Slot 1 drive Array Recovery Needed. The following disk drives need automatic automatic data recovery (rebuild)

      1716 — Slot 1 drive Array — Unregenerable Media Errors detected on drives during previous rebuild or auto reliability monitoring (ARM). Scan problem will be fixed automatically when the sectors are overwritten. Backup and restore recommended.

      These are all HP drives. Now one of the drives (bay 8) is back to «normal» status and the one in bay 5 is showing solid orange from blinking orange state. Is there a HP diagnostic utility that can tell the status of bay 5 drive? It is a brand new drive and could be an issue with firmware. I just want to find with help of  diagnostic utility whether the problem is hardware or software related.

      I have had to do quite a few Drive / Controller firmware updates to resolve similar issues. I would get them done first and see if that resolves the problem.

      You seemed to mention it in your own reply, but flashing orange lights on disks means SMART error or predictive failure, I would look at getting some spares and replacing them one-by-one.

      If it helps (for HP)

      Green = Good

      Red = Dead/Failed

      Orange — SMART error / Predictive failure

      Blue — RAID set or Disk selected in RAID configuration utility.
