Rbl lookup error host or domain name not found

Hi, I am using postfix 3.3.4 with this configuration: smtpd_client_restrictions = check_client_access hash:/usr/local/etc/postfix/access, permit_sasl_authenticated, reject_rbl_client zen.spamhaus.org, reject_rbl_client dnsbl.sorbs.net...

Hi, I am using

postfix

3.3.4 with this configuration:

Code:

smtpd_client_restrictions =
           check_client_access hash:/usr/local/etc/postfix/access,
           permit_sasl_authenticated,
           reject_rbl_client zen.spamhaus.org,
           reject_rbl_client dnsbl.sorbs.net,
           reject_rbl_client hostkarma.junkemailfilter.com=127.0.0.2,
           reject_rbl_client b.barracudacentral.org,
           reject_rbl_client bl.spamcop.net,
           reject_rbl_client cbl.abuseat.org,
           reject_rbl_client psbl.surriel.com,
           reject_invalid_hostname,
           reject_non_fqdn_hostname,
           reject_non_fqdn_sender,
           reject_non_fqdn_recipient,
           reject_unknown_sender_domain,
           reject_unknown_recipient_domain,
           reject_unauth_pipelining,
           reject_rhsbl_client hostkarma.junkemailfilter.com=127.0.0.2,
           reject_rhsbl_sender hostkarma.junkemailfilter.com=127.0.0.2,
           reject_rhsbl_sender dsn.rfc-ignorant.org,
           permit_mynetworks

It seems I have some issue with Spamhaus RBL, for example:

Code:

May 16 09:36:59 mail postfix/smtpd[4405]: warning: hostname static-ip-18160107106.cable.net.co does not resolve to address 181.60.107.106: hostname nor servname provided, or not known

May 16 09:37:15 mail postfix/smtpd[4405]: disconnect from unknown[181.60.107.106] ehlo=1 mail=1 rcpt=0/1 commands=2/3

Spamhaus is not blocking IP 181.60.107.106, but Sorbs works.
I checked on https://www.spamhaus.org/lookup/ and such is actually listed in PBL and XBL.

Is there any issue with my configuration, or Spamhaus is not allowing queries from my IP?

Thank you

What were you expecting to see?
Spamhaus don’t have to appear in your log like Sorbs.

Given this msg «……181.60.107.106]: 554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Client host [181.60.107.106] blocked using dnsbl.sorbs.net; Currently Sending Spam See: http://www.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml?181.60.107.106; from=<akt…….@su………com> to=<avid……@domain.org> proto=ESMTP helo=<static-ip-18160107106.cable.net.co> May 16 09:37:15 mail postfix/smtpd[4405]: lost conne….», most (public email) servers would block your email messages from being delivered.

You may need an email proxy/forwarder for your emails to Yahoo, Gmail, etc to be delivered.

Hi,

please look again:

Code:

May 16 09:37:15 mail postfix/smtpd[4405]: warning: 106.107.60.181.zen.spamhaus.org: RBL lookup error: Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=106.107.60.181.zen.spamhaus.org type=A: Host not found, try again

The message was «inbound» to my server (domain.org is mine, in the example).
The point is: it seems I am not getting Spamhaus’r RBL protection.
Thank you

They regularly update their servers and rules. You may be using an old config. I remember dropping a few of them…

Is there any issue with my configuration, or Spamhaus is not allowing queries from my IP?

I don’t think so, I get those too sometimes when using the free data feeds.

  • #6

Better to install rspamd from ports and remove these blacklists entirely. Blacklists are shady business, even worse than spam.

  • #7

You may want to update your postfix configuration. There’s a better separation now between different restrictions.

smtpd_helo_restrictions =
….
smtpd_sender_restrictions =
….
smtpd_relay_restrictions =

smtpd_recipient_restrictions =

regarding spamhouse you may want to switch to sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org

Here is my example:

Code:

# SASL CONFIG
broken_sasl_auth_clients = yes
smtpd_delay_reject = yes
smtpd_helo_required = yes

smtpd_helo_restrictions =
  permit_mynetworks,
  permit_sasl_authenticated,
  reject_invalid_helo_hostname,
  reject_non_fqdn_helo_hostname

smtpd_sender_restrictions =
  permit_mynetworks,
  permit_sasl_authenticated,
  reject_non_fqdn_sender,
  reject_unknown_sender_domain

smtpd_relay_restrictions =
  permit_mynetworks,
  permit_sasl_authenticated,
  defer_unauth_destination

smtpd_recipient_restrictions =
  reject_unknown_recipient_domain,
  reject_non_fqdn_recipient,
  permit_mynetworks,
  permit_sasl_authenticated,
  reject_unauth_destination,
  reject_unauth_pipelining,
  reject_rbl_client bl.spamcop.net,
  reject_rbl_client sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org,
  reject_rbl_client zen.spamhaus.org,
  reject_rbl_client db.wpbl.info,
  reject_rbl_client cbl.abuseat.org

For Spamhaus black lists, you only need

reject_rbl_client zen.spamhaus.org

because it has all other Spamhaus RBLs included. See also https://www.spamhaus.org/zen/.
I would put it as first, for me it is catching 90% of all spam before all other lists.

подскажите что произошло?

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply

ask a new question.

I’m starting to get RBL lookup errors, causing some legitimate and not so legitimate connections to time out.

Jul 19 03:29:09 blue postfix/smtpd[11865]: warning:

not found. Name service error for name=194.249.233.219.zen.spamhaus.org
type=A: Host not found, try again

From what I’ve been reading, is it usually a DNS config error with the source host? Because I can receive e-mails fine from many other hosts.

The RBL keeps a list of all blacklisted IPs.

The receiving server (your server) will send a query containing the IP of the sending server to the RBL to see if it is listed.

Being the SMTP protocol quite old and due to the fact RBL lookups were not contemplated when it was created a hack/workaround is used in the form of a DNS query. Based on the return value of this query your mail server will accept or reject the message.

An example:

-Your server receives a connection attempt by a sending server at 194.123.321.001

-The lookup mechanism (handled by postfix or amavisd or spamassassin, but in your case postfix) will reverse the bytes and add the RBLs hostname. This results in: 001.321.123.194.zen.spamhaus.org

-Next a DNS lookup for 001.321.123.194.zen.spamhaus.org will take place.

-If it returns an address (usually in the 127.0.0.0/8 loopback block), it means the IP is listed. If it returns NXDOMAIN it is not listed and mail is accepted.

Alex

RBL lookup error

I have set up a mail server at work using Linux and the internet as my guide.  I am completely new to Linux but managed to get everything working somehow….

Now I get my daily LogWatch email from my email server and  I the only error that I get is listed below.  This error occurs a good bit, but does not seem to affect the function of the program.   I searched for an answer on the net and there does not seem to be a consensus on what to do to fix it (or my not being able to understand a thing some of the posts said might have something to do with it too!)  I just wanted to be able to fix it and clean up my log files some.

I am using Fedora Core 5 with Postfix, Spamassassin,  Amavis, and ClamAV.

Here is the error section which shows up in the PostFix section.  It goes on for pages, so I truncated it.

Since I am so fresh at this, I would appreciate any replies in «Step by Step for Dummies» format.

Which RBL clients are currently in service and considered good by you?

    Thanks for your help.

  2. Re: Current Postfix RBLs

Apologies for the delay replying: if you have alread found a solution, please at least mark your thread «solved».

    I’d suggest using zen.spamhaus.org instead of sbl.spamhaus.org

  3. Re: Current Postfix RBLs

    spamhaus and spamcop are good.
