I have just downloaded redshift and its loads fine but when I go to render an output, I get error (-17) License error: Error communicating with license server.
I have disabled my firewalls and antivirus to check if this is the problem and it didnt help.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this working? Desperate to get RS working for Houdini as I am a student and my academic facilities have shut downa, I dont have access to the softwares they would normally provide.

Try uninstall Redshift. Windows: C:/ProgramData/Redshift -> Uninstall. Then clear other logs under that folder. Reinstall Redshift and open-up your redshift license manager and they will ask you to unlock your license on previous machine(and you only have 3 chances to do that. If run out of unlocks, try email their support.) After that launch houdini again, you’ll be good to go.

These are listed by error code number, which will be shown in the error message and listed in the RLM Administration Guide. The explanation for the error code from the guide is shown under the heading ‘RLM Admin Guide’ for each topic.
-13: User/Host not on the include list
Server permission issue
RLM Admin Guide:
Not on the feature include list
The license administrator has specified an INCLUDE list for this product, and you are not on it.
add to the list of users who are able to check out a license
-17: Communications error with license server
Player cannot find the RLM license server.
RLM Admin Guide:
Error communicating with server
This indicates a basic communication error with the license server, either in a network initialization, read, or write call
There are three possible reasons for this error:
1. There is no PlayerLicenseServer.lic license file in ‘C:Program Files (x86)GIS-paxPlayerLicense’
2. The license server cannot be resolved by DNS. In this case edit the PlayerLicenseServer.lic file, and replace server name with a fully qualified server name that can be resolved.
3. The license server does not have RLM installed.
-17 & -111: Connection refused at server
Server side error. RLM not operating correctly.
RLM Admin Guide:

Try license server restart.
Other possible causes are due to someone installing a second rlm service pointing at the same Player rlm.exe and using the same port numbers.
To check this look at the Services and see if there is a second rlm service. Also could use TCPView.exe from https://live.sysinternals.com/ to show the 5054 and 5053 ports in use but no application was using them.
- Uninstall rlm_gispax service.
- Uninstall rlm service.
- Send latest version of RLM with license.
- Install rlm_gispax service.
-18: License server does not support this product
License incompatible with Player version. Could occur with a mix of Player 3 and Player 4 product/license configuration
RLM Admin Guide:
License server doesn’t support this
Upgrade Player and/or re-issue license file
-28: Server does not know this handle or -125 Roam data read error
Related to errors with roaming licenses.
RLM Admin Guide:
Server does not know this license handle
This is an internal server error. It will be returned usually when you are attempting to return a roaming license early.
The RLM_ROAM environment variable in a users profile is used when a roaming license is checked out. Occasionally this can incorrectly be set. This can occur if you try to checkout the Player license and don’t check it back in.
To fix the RLM_ROAM problem, do the following:
- Close ArcMap.
- From the Windows Start button, open the Control Panel.
- Go to the Advanced System Settings.
- Open the Environment Variables dialog. Edit the RLM_ROAM environment variable to 0 as below.
- In some instances you’ll need to log out, and log back in.
-46: Uncounted license on Terminal Server is disabled
Indicates RLM is rejecting connection from a terminal server. Player license files include a flag to disallow Terminal Server access but allow Remote Desktop access. This has historically been included to prevent the RLM licensing from being exploited.
RLM Admin Guide:
Terminal server/remote desktop disabled
The only available license has Terminal Server disabled, and the application is running on a Windows Terminal Server machine.
If acceptable re-issue license file with the deny flag for Terminal Servers removed
-57: Bad RLM_LICENSE error code
Something’s gone wrong checking out a roaming license.
RLM Admin Guide:
None of these licenses can roam
The license max_roam_count is set to 0. This will always be the case for licenses that are transferred to another server.

ERROR: COMPOSE License Error: Communications error with license server (-17) Connection refused at server (-111)
since moving from XPP 8.4 to XPP 9.0 we’ve been getting the above RLM licence error. We’ve been working with SDL support and Reprise but so far have no fix and we were wondering if anyone has experienced this?
We’ve confirmed that there are no other processes using the same port or any conflicts and nothing changed apart from the move from XPP 8.4 to 9.0 (inc relevant 3rd party apps). We’ve been given the RLM.exe version 11, which fixes a known issue in regards to port scanning but this didn’t make any difference.
There originally seemed to be a pattern with this issue occurring primarily on Mondays despite nothing being different in terms of scheduled tasks, errors or applications but we have also seen it occur on other days as well.
So, is it just us or has anyone else seen this issue?
At STCC/Italy I am having exactly the same problem.
We have an open ticket for this: 00088758
And just by accident this morning I requested an update on this long standing problem.
(of course this will look a bit suspicious in combination with your post. [:D])
(lets just keep it on «great minds think alike» for the moment)
We also tried the port thing and the new version fo the rlm.exe but the problem still remains.
And also the problem seemed to occur somewhere at the start of the month and had a preference for weekends (very annoying that is).
But for the moment we do not have a real solution for this problem.
The workaround we installed is a script that runs continuously on the server and checks every minute or so if the license manager is still responding.
When there is no response, the script will restart the license manager and send an email to the administrator.
Works great.
With emails that were send, we were hoping to detect a pattern or reason, but so far no luck.

roman551: а «RLM-сервер» только «RedShift»-овский установлен?Можно в диспетчере задач посмотреть.У меня подобное было,правда код ошибки (-18) высвечивало,из-за того что в системе «rlm-GenArts»-овский стоял. Пробовал менять адреса портов в системной переменной и файлах лицензии — бесполезно,в паре два сервера ни в какую не получается корректно использовать.Пришлось удалить службу «RLM-RedShift-сервер» и файлы лицензии и «redshift.opt» «redshift.set» в сапфировскую папку закинуть: «C:Program Files (x86)GenArtsrlm».Само-собою адреса портов в системной переменной и файлах лицензии в таком случае изменить надо.На порт 5053 лицензия Nuke прописывается и сапфиров. Еще вопрос: системную переменную правильно задали — «redshift_LICENSE» без изменения регистра и «адрес_ порта@localhost»? |

murza_v RLM сервер да, только один для редшифта. Адреса портов я тоже пробовал менять, результата нет. Системная переменная тоже правильно задана, без изменения регистра и с нужным портом. |

Как вариант — удалить службу «RLM-RedShift»,установить «GenArts»-овский сервер лицензий: https://cloud.mail.ru/public/EiA4/gm33qd5iV поместить файлы redshift.lic,redshift.opt,redshift.set,redshift_client.lic в папку GenArtsrlm изменив адреса портов. У меня Nuke-10 на Windows_8.1 без проблем устанавливается с родным RLM_FLT,а на Widows-10 только с genarts-rlm сервером,на родном -ни в какую не лицензируется. |

murza_v номера портов точно одни и теже Еще при перезапуске включается сервер на мгновение, и при открытии выдает вот такую ошибку м опять выключается. вот что пишет rlm при запуске от админа, при остановленной службе. оставил только файлы лицензии от redshift в папке, порт поставил 5053 |

Правильный порядок установки: 1.распаковываем архив,запускаем файл от админа «genarts-rlm-server-install-11.2.2.0.exe» 2.после инсталляции останавливаем в службах «RLM-GenArts» (можно перед этим запустить файл «rlm.exe» по пути «C:Program Files (x86)GenArtsrlm» проверить архитектуру сервера — должно быть типа «Server architecture: x86_w2»,закрыть данное окно, потом остановить службу) 3.с остановленной службой RLM копируем из папки архива «AMPED» все файлы в папку «C:Program Files (x86)GenArtsrlm»,соглашаемся на замену 4.прописываем системную переменную «genarts_LICENSE» со значением «5053@localhost» (можно попробовать и без задания системной переменной) 5.запускаем службу,смотрим лог «RLM-GenArts.log», должно быть «Server architecture: x64_w3»,или снова запускаем файл «rlm.exe»,проверяем архитектуру |

По поводу листьев вот тест Все вроде ок. Сам пока не пробовал, но для создания листьев на деревьях нужно использовать Redshift Sprite. csap , Qwa7 — Это очень помогло я прям заново вдохновился Быстрый просчёт IR Cache теперь, и листья стали выглядеть уже круче =) Можно ли как то сделать стёкла менее шумными в тенях? В override пробовал поднять Refract не помогло, в Optimizations CutOff поставил на 0,0001.. Даже в Output ставлю Samples 256 получается лучше но шум есть, вот время вырастает тогда очень сильно. |

-13: User/Host not on the include list

Resolution
add to the list of users who are able to check out a license
-17: Communications error with license server
Player cannot find the RLM license server.

Error communicating with server
This indicates a basic communication error with the license server, either in a network initialization, read, or write call
Resolution
There are three possible reasons for this error:
1. There is no PlayerLicenseServer.lic license file in ‘C:Program Files (x86)GIS-paxPlayerLicense’
2. The license server cannot be resolved by DNS. In this case edit the PlayerLicenseServer.lic file, and replace server name with a fully qualified server name that can be resolved.
3. The license server does not have RLM installed.
-17 & -111: Connection refused at server
Server side error. RLM not operating correctly.

Resolution
Try license server restart.
Other possible causes are due to someone installing a second rlm service pointing at the same Player rlm.exe and using the same port numbers.
To check this look at the Services and see if there is a second rlm service. Also could use TCPView.exe from https://live.sysinternals.com/ to show the 5054 and 5053 ports in use but no application was using them…
Resolve by:
- Uninstall rlm_gispax service.
- Uninstall rlm service.
- Send latest version of RLM with license.
- Install rlm_gispax service.
-18: License server does not support this product
License incompatible with Player version. Could occur with a mix of Player 3 and Player 4 product/license configuration

This is an internal server error. It will be returned usually when you are attempting to return a roaming license early.

Resolution
The RLM_ROAM environment variable in a users profile is used when a roaming license is checked out. Occasionally this can incorrectly be set. This can occur if you try to checkout the Player license and don’t check it back in.
To fix the RLM_ROAM problem, do the following:
- Close ArcMap.
- From the Windows Start button, open the Control Panel.
- Go to the Advanced System Settings.
- Open the Environment Variables dialog. Edit the RLM_ROAM environment variable to 0 as below.
- In some instances you’ll need to log out, and log back in.
-46: Uncounted license on Terminal Server is disabled
Indicates RLM is rejecting connection from a terminal server. Player license files include a flag to disallow Terminal Server access but allow Remote Desktop access. This has historically been included to prevent the RLM licensing from being exploited.

The only available license has Terminal Server disabled, and the application is running on a Windows Terminal Server machine.
Resolution
If acceptable re-issue license file with the deny flag for Terminal Servers removed

Something’s gone wrong checking out a roaming license.

None of these licenses can roam
The license max_roam_count is set to 0. This will always be the case for licenses that are transferred to another server.
Resolution
Release the roaming license. If unable to do so check the gispax.opt file in the RLM folder on the server. Check to see if there is max_roam_count setting and change.
