Cannot connect via VNC.

when using MobaXterm I get prompted for password but I don’t see any reference to what that password might be or I wonder if mobaxterm just prompts you for it.

I emailed support and it was suggested that I install VNC on each antlet.

That works.

Hey @ac9hp,

I ran into this same issue while trying to connect to my Android x86 image. What I ended up doing was tunneling in and directly connecting to the real VNC port:

ssh -L 8882:localhost:5902 root@my-antsle-ip-here -i ~/.ssh/my_key_here

The port should be 5900 + whatever the port your antlet is on. You can get this via: virsh vncdisplay. I chose 8882 randomly as my local port. I used VNC Connect instead of TightVNC as I’m on OSX, but simply connecting to localhost:8882 worked just fine.

Hopefully this will help out someone in the future. Cheers!

@avidityjames,

This works great when your system supports SSH.

I have not looked recently but I need to make this work from an iPad.

I suspect I could get to to work from a PC using some SSH package but I do not recall seeing a SSH package for my iPad.  I may go look in the store.

Mostly I have been just using a VNC server to get into the machines.

For a while on my windows VM I was using Teamviewer but it kept getting flagged for commercial use and VNC is just easier and no hassle.

Thanks for the tip!

It is really annoying using the web browser as VNC client. I have the same issue and never works

«`

[email protected]:~ # virsh list
Id Name State

2 Kali-2019 running

[email protected]:~ # virsh vncdisplay kali-2019
error: failed to get domain ‘kali-2019’

[email protected]:~ # virsh vncdisplay 2
127.0.0.1:1

[email protected]:~ #

«`

So based on your calculation the in-port will be 5900+1 = 5901

Then, tried to connect using VNC client to the hostname: kali-2019.xxxx.antsle.us:5901

Getting connect refuse.

Please advice.

Thank you

@yasirmohammed

what are you using for your SSH command into the antsle before trying to connect to the antsle?

also once you run the SSH -L command you need to connect to your local machine and it will forward to the antsle..

I was able to connect to the port 5901 using the SSH -L (Port forward) but I am getting a black screen with a message :

( Attempting to reconnect to VNC Server … RFB protocol error: invalid message type 255 )

Thanks

I know it’s not the exact same error message, but according to this:

https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/vms-using-freenas-11-gui-error-connecting-via-vnc-at-linux-setup.54582/

It could be the quality level in the VNC client being set to Auto instead of High?

This method worked very well.  Requires you have ssh installed.

Rfb protocol error bad pixel format

RealVNC, RPi3, ESXi and Windows 7 VM — Bad Rectangles

I have an ESXi server on which I run a few VMs, one of which is the only Windows machine in the house, effectively. My MacBook is being repaired and whilst it is away, I thought I would try getting VNC working on my RPi3 so I can still use the Windows 7 VM when I need to.

The RPi3 is attached to a Motorola Laptop and is working fine.
I got RealVNC installed.
The VM has its desktop size set to 1366×768.

What I found was the first time i got it working it was great, after several connection attempts failed with RFB protocol error — bad rectangle

Since then I have not been able to get rid of the error and it has been unusable.

The VNC viewer window shows a double ghost image of the W7 VM desktop below which it says:
Attempting to reconnect to VNC server.
RFB protocol error: Bad rectangle: 16448×0 at 0,0 exceeds 1366×768

Bear in mind here that the VNC server is not actually running on the Windows machine, it is a function within the ESXi server, so pretty basic. It does however work flawlessly with Apple Remote Desktop and with the Remoter VNC client I have on my iPad. And as I said it did work once with RealVNC on the RPi3.

Has anyone come across this and worked out a work around or solved it?

Re: RealVNC, RPi3, ESXi and Windows 7 VM — Bad Rectangles

I gave up on RealVNC. And they won’t even speak to you unless you are trying to connect to a RealVNC server.

Xtightvncviewer works. sort of! Its a bit clunky to get a connection, but that’s OK. I don’t like not being able to have a full screen view. It has the option (allegedly!) as pressing F8 brings up a menu with a «Full screen» option but clicking it crashes/closes the viewer completely. Also trying to change the desktop resolution of the Windows VM at the other end causes the viewer to crash or close too.

Are there any recommendations for VNC viewers I might try instead?

Re: RealVNC, RPi3, ESXi and Windows 7 VM — Bad Rectangles

Result! I wanted to see what VNC related packages were installed on the Pi.
Found something installed called xvnc4viewer! Which works perfectly and yet claims to be RealVNC. When I tried starting the RealVNC viewer from the Raspbian GUI I couldn’t make it work. I don’t know if by started xvnc4viewer from the command line starts the same client in a different way, but it works, so I am happy now.

In comparison xtightvncviewer is just nasty.

#1237 TightVNC 2.7.1, Windows 2008r2, RFB error, bad screen size

Hi,
I have problem with TightVNC 2.7.1 x64bit on Windows 2008 r2.
System:
— debian box, kvm-qemu
— clean install Windows 2008 r2
— all updates include optional
— TightVNC 2.7.1
— DFMirage Driver 2.0.301

Problem:
Before windows update everything was ok. After windows optional update I can no longer connect to the TightVNC server. From RealVNC Viewer I get error «RFB error: bad screen size 0x0». With TightVNC Viewer I get only toolbar from client, but without image.
It become independent of the two clean installed servers.

Discussion

We are seeing this same issue as well on almost identical configuration

Brand new machine, Windows 2008 r2
Initially setup with TightVNC 2.7.1 dn DFMirage. VNC was working fine.

We ran Windows Update to get current, and vnc no longer worked, would report Screen geometry of 0x0

We uninstalled 2.7.1, and installed 2.6.4 and VNC works

Attached is a log file from 2.7.1 when VNC was not working

I have encountered exactly the same error described here on a Win7 64-bit Pro system. TightVNC 2.7.1 worked fine initially (with or without mirror driver) but after windows updates it would exhibit the 0x0 screen size error. Multiple re-installs and wipes of TightVNC settings had no effect, but downgrading to 2.6.4 resolved the issue immediately.

Had this exact problem on Gutsy, Hardy, and now Intrepid, using «xvncviewer -ZlibLevel 7 [vnc_display]».

Most of the VNC displays I’m connecting to are Windows 2003 running on Xen (SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2). The display sizes range from 640×480 to 800×600. I typically access them through SSH port forwarding, but that may be irrelevant.

Anyway, long story short, I moved over to xtightvncviewer (based on the post I found at http:// ubuntuforums. org/showthread. php?t=695273 ). The problem completely went away, but the speed of the session was abysmally slow (VNC Displays are at a remote data center, accessed through a VPN tunnel). It turned out I needed to specify the encodings. The command that I’m running now is:
xtightvncviewer -compresslevel 7 -encodings «copyrect tight hextile zlib corre rre raw»
I just put that in my .bash_aliases as the command ‘vnc’. So all I need to type is ‘vnc [vnc_display]’.

Works like a charm.

Interesting idea with xtightvncviewer, but I end up getting a similar problem with it too. Here I was connecting to a QEMU session booting OpenSolaris:

]$ xtightvncviewer -compresslevel 7 -encodings «copyrect tight hextile zlib corre rre raw» localhost:1
Connected to RFB server, using protocol version 3.8
No authentication needed
Authentication successful
Desktop name «QEMU»
VNC server default format:
32 bits per pixel.
Least significant byte first in each pixel.
True colour: max red 255 green 255 blue 255, shift red 16 green 8 blue 0
Using default colormap which is TrueColor. Pixel format:
32 bits per pixel.
Least significant byte first in each pixel.
True colour: max red 255 green 255 blue 255, shift red 16 green 8 blue 0
Using shared memory PutImage
Rect too large: 720×400 at (0, 0)

Well, that’s a different package, and I don’t want to file bugs for that here.

I seem to have the biggest problems in xvnc4viewer when the emulated system is changing video resolution, which happens multiple times in the process of booting a guest. In QEMU or KVM, the resolution also usually changes when accessing the built-in management console by pressing Ctrl+Alt+2 and then change resolution again to go to the emulated VGA by pressing Ctrl+Alt+1.

One potential problem is that xvnc4viewer seems to destroy and re-create a window whenever the resolution changes (well, my compiz window manager thinks it’s doing that anyway — I’m getting the window open/close effects to trigger at these times). I’m suspicious that there may be a timing issue where the client may be trying to draw an image at the new resolution before the window has switched, or in that instant between the old window being destroyed and the new one being created.

Of course, there’s a decent probability that there are bugs in the bulit-in VNC servers on QEMU and KVM, but the client should be more tolerant of bogus data coming down the pipe.

Describe the bug
I am observing a VNC server crash on client connect after a previously successful connect. This mostly seems to happen if the client disconnects uncleanly, but it is not 100% reproducible. Repeatedly connecting / disconnecting gracefully doesn’t appear to trigger the crash.

VNCserver is hosting a complete XFCE desktop environment along with typical desktop workloads such as Firefox / Thunderbird, etc…

To Reproduce

  1. Start the VNC server on the remote host: vncserver -localhost no :1
  2. Connect the client: vncviewer server:1
  3. Do some work (doesn’t seem to matter how long the connection is open)
  4. Close the laptop lid (don’t disconnect gracefully, laptop goes to sleep)
  5. Re-connect client: vncviewer server:1
  6. Password prompt observed, followed by below mesaage on the client: CConn: End of stream

Expected behavior
VNC server does not crash, and prior session is resumed.
