Choose a method for repairing the separated mercury.

This may be the easiest way to restore the column. However, do note that this method has varied results.^[2]

Place the thermometer in a refrigerator or ideally, a freezer. If cold enough, it should send the mercury (or other indicating fluid) to the bulb with little else to do. See the next steps if a refrigerator or freezer is not available or did not work.

This method may take several attempts.

Gradually heat the bulb with a hair dryer on warm. The mercury will rise to the top of the thermometer and join together.

Allow the thermometer to gradually cool down to room temperature.

If you need to take several attempts, just heat and cool gradually. Do not overheat, as the thermometer could burst.^[3]

This method is fairly reliable as it was often used in hospitals, etc. before the electronic thermometers and disposable temperature strips became commonplace. There is, however, a risk of losing grip of the thermometer while shaking that could result in breakage and spillage of mercury.

Вот простой и эффективный способ, как вернуть ртуть в градуснике на место. Включите тёплую воду из крана (только не горячую!) и подставьте градусник под струю воды.

ВНИМАНИЕ: температура воды должна быть не более 40 градусов, иначе есть риск сломать градусник окончательно. Лучше всего включить холодную воду и понемногу добавлять горячую, держа градусник под струей воды. Как только уровень ртути начнёт подниматься, остановитесь. Если температуры недостаточно, еще чуть-чуть увеличьте температуру воды.

Ваша задача — поднять уровень ртути в градуснике, чтобы разделённые части ртути объединились. После этого встряхните градусник (сбейте температуру) и нагрейте градусник под водой снова. Всё, после этого градусник должен работать нормально!

Обратите внимание, что иногда после разделения ртути градусник начинает привирать. Поэтому рекомендуем после этого измерить температуру и проверить показания. Если заметили, что градусник начал показывать неправильные данные, лучше его утилизировать и купить новый.

Не спешите выбрасывать термометр, у которого «разбежалась» ртуть. Достаточно подогреть его до температуры, при которой ртуть поднимется до самого верха шкалы (не перегревать, иначе градусник лопнет). После такой операции, пишет М. Коваленко (г. Уральск), термометр будет служить дальше.
