Fix Setup has failed Error in Windows
If you encounter the “Setup has failed to determine supported install choices” error when trying to downgrade or upgrade your Windows 10 computer, this signifies that there are some compatibility issues with the installation process and that Windows was not able to either downgrade or upgrade to another version.
Usually, this error occurs when you are using the built-in options in Windows 10 upgrade or downgrade to another version of Windows. This option is mostly used as it keeps the user settings as well as data intact. Thus, you need to keep in mind a lot of parameters before you proceed with the installation because if there is any conflict in the process, you certainly won’t be able to downgrade or upgrade your Windows computer. To resolve the issue, here are some suggestions that might help.
Option 1 – Try running in Compatibility mode
This is the first thing you can try to resolve the issue instead of going right ahead on making a bootable device. So if you are downgrading Windows, you can try to run the installer in the compatibility mode for that specific Windows version.
- Look for the setup file.
- Once you find it, right-click on it and select Properties from the context menu.
- After that, go to the Compatibility tab and mark the checkbox for “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and from the drop-down list, select either Windows 7 or Windows 8.
- You also have to check the “Run as administrator” option.
- Now click the Apply button and then click OK to save the changes made and check if it has resolved the issue or not.
Option 2 – Option 2 – Try troubleshooting compatibility
This option is almost the same as the first one except it is an alternative way of fixing the “Setup has failed to determine supported install choices” error in case the first one didn’t work. In this option, you will troubleshoot the compatibility issue.
- Look for the setup file.
- Then right-click on it and select the “Troubleshoot compatibility” from the context menu.
- After that, click on the “Try recommended setting” option. Once the process is done, the error message should be gone.
Option 3 – Try to use the setup file instead of an image
If you are running the Windows ISO image for the installation, you can try running the setup file instead. This is because when you try to install Windows from an image file directly, it has to be loaded into a virtual CD drive first, and then from there, further operations are carried out. And so, you can just bypass this mechanism to avoid getting the “Setup has failed to determine supported install choices” error.
- First, you need to extract the disk file to an accessible location.
- After that, go to Sources > Setup.exe.
- Now run the setup file to upgrade or downgrade the Windows version. Just make sure that you do run the setup file as an administrator.
Option 4 – Try to do the upgrade or downgrade in a Clean Boot state
Putting your PC in a Clean Boot state can also help when you want to upgrade or downgrade your version of Windows without any trouble because, during this state, you can start the system with a minimum number of drivers and startup programs that will surely help you in isolating the root cause of the issue.
- Log onto your PC as an administrator.
- Type in MSConfigin the Start Search to open the System Configuration utility.
- From there, go to the General tab and click “Selective startup”.
- Clear the “Load Startup items” checkbox and make sure that the “Load System Services” and “Use Original boot configuration” options are checked.
- Next, click the Services tab and select the “Hide All Microsoft Services” checkbox.
- Click Disable all.
- Click on Apply/OK and restart your PC. (This will put your PC into a Clean Boot State. And configure Windows to use the usual startup, just simply undo the changes.)
- After that, try to install the Windows Updates or upgrade again.
Option 5 – Try to use the Media Creation tool
The Media Creation tool in Windows allows you to use the ISO installation file to make a bootable device that you can use to install Windows on your PC. Note that this is kind of different from the usual installation process as it could erase your computer’s current settings and data on the primary drive. Thus, before you proceed, you need to backup all your data into some removable drive and then use the Media Creation Tool to make a bootable drive.
- After making the bootable drive, you need to plug it into your computer and then reboot.
- Next, tap the F10 or Esc key to open the boot options.
- Now set the boot priority of the removable drive the highest. Once the setup comes forth, follow the next onscreen instructions and install Windows without any problems.

Fix Error Code 0x80072EE7 in Windows
Installing or updating Google Chrome does not always go smoothly as there are times when it also encounters some errors like the error code 0x80072EE7. This kind of error in Chrome is most likely caused by the Windows Firewall or third-party Firewall (if you’re using one) that blocks the installation or update process. Aside from this known culprit, there are also other factors to consider such as corrupted or incompatible installation files or it could also be caused by some issue with your internet connection.
If you face this kind of problem when installing or updating Chrome, you will see the following error message on your screen:
“An error occurred while checking for updates: Unable to connect to the Internet. If you use a firewall, please whitelist GoogleUpdate.exe. (error code 7: 0x80072EE7 — system level).”
Whatever the cause of this error is, you need to use the options prepared below to fix it.
Option 1 – Whitelist the “googleupdate.exe” in Firewall
If the issue is really caused by the Firewall, you need to whitelist the googleupdate.exe program to fix the error. To do that, follow these steps:
- Tap the Win + E keys to open the File Explorer.
- Next, copy and paste the following location in the address bar and tap Enter to go there.
Control Panel/All Control Panel Items/Windows Defender Firewall/Allowed apps
- After that, click on the Change Settings button, and from the given list, look for Google Chrome.
- Now check both Private and Public connections for it and then click on OK and see if it fixes the error or not.
Option 2 – Disable the proxy server for LAN
If the problem has something to do with your internet connection, then you can try disabling the proxy server for LAN and see if that helps.
- Tap the Win + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
- Then type “inetcpl.cpl” in the field and hit Enter to pull up the Internet Properties.
- After that, go to the Connections tab and select the LAN settings.
- From there. Uncheck the “Use a Proxy Server” option for your LAN and then make sure that the “Automatically detect settings” option is checked.
- Now click the OK and the Apply buttons.
- Restart your PC.
Note: If you are using a third-party proxy service, you have to disable it.
Option 3 – Check your VPN
If you are using a VPN application, then this option should apply to you, if not, skip this option and proceed to the next one. There are times when VPN software causes some issues like this error. If that’s the case, you can try to disable your VPN temporarily and see if the error is resolved or not and if turns out that your VPN is the culprit, you have to uninstall it and install a new one or its latest version. To uninstall it, follow the steps below.
- Tap the Win + R keys to open the Run dialog box
- Then type “appwiz.cpl” in the field and hit Enter to open the Programs and Features in Control Panel.
- From there, look for the VPN service you are using, select it and then click on Uninstall to remove it.
- After that, restart your computer and try to install the latest version of the program again. It should work now. If not, proceed to the next available option below.
Option 4 – Try to run the Chrome Cleanup tool
You might want to run Google Chrome’s built-in Malware Scanner & Cleanup tool as it could also help in getting rid of any unwanted ads, pop-ups, and even malware, as well as unusual startup pages, toolbars, and anything else that might overtake the network and could affect the performance of the browser.
Option 5 – Reset Google Chrome
Before you proceed, make sure that the Chrome browser is not running anywhere in the background via Task Manager. Once you’ve made sure that it’s no longer running, refer to these steps:
- Tap the Win + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
- Then type “%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalGoogleChromeUser Data” in the field and tap Enter to open this location.
- From there, look for the Default folder and then tap the Shift + Delete button and if a confirmation prompt appears, click on Yes.
- After deleting the Default folder, open Google Chrome and click on the three vertical dots icon located in the top-right corner to open the menu.
- Next, click on Settings and scroll down and then click on Advanced to open the Advanced Settings.
- Then scroll down until you see the “Reset and clean up” section and click the “Restore Settings to their original defaults” option.
- After that, you will see a confirmation box and from there, click on the Reset settings button to reset your Google Chrome browser.

Run time error 50290 method ‘ontime’ of object ‘_application’ failed
Hi I have an excel file and when i open it :
Run time error 50290 method ‘ontime’ of object ‘_application’ failed appears,
and i can only choose «end»http://www.traderant.com/images/traderant blog/027.png
It only happens to one of my computer, and it happens randomly, meaning some time it opens ok, and sometime the run time error appears.
When I move the file to another computer, there is not such issue.

Re: Run time error 50290 method ‘ontime’ of object ‘_application’ failed
Hi,
It’s probably a macro driven by the workbook open event. When you’ve cleared the message by selecting End, go to Visual Basic — Alt-F11, find your workbook name in the left hand window and double click on the ‘This Workbook’ object. Then in the left hand drop down window on the right click workbook and see what code there is on the Workbook_Open procedure. Delete it if you don’t want it.

Re: Run time error 50290 method ‘ontime’ of object ‘_application’ failed
I use Excel 2010 and I’m having the same problem (Error 50290).
I have been searching about this for a little while and it happens when for some reason, the application becomes «not ready» (Application.Ready = False) .
When this error appears, I can check in the Immediate Window that Application.Ready = False. Any suggestions on how to solve this?
PS:
If click ‘STOP’ my Excel crashes…
I already tried to turn off the AutoRecovery Save, the Multi-Threaded Calculation (For Excel 2003, this Error is not so frenquently) and the Background Error Checking as well.
When this happens, I can’t plot on the sheet (Cells(1,1) = «ok»), I can’t activate the Workbook (ActiveWorkbook.Activate), I can’t calculate the Workbook (Calculate), nothing.

Re: Run time error 50290 method ‘ontime’ of object ‘_application’ failed
I have just run into a similar problem with this runtime error 50290. I have code that runs reliably on Excel 2007. Two installations on Excel 2010 also work. But on a third installation, it hit an error right here (red code):
by adding this line in red (below), the problem want away.
Does anyone have any idea why?thanks
