One of the problems we have faced recently with an Access application that our company has written and supported for the last 11 years (Access 2 originally and now in Acccess 2003 ) is global variables and the VBA compiler. We had some significant development, debugging issues with global variables going out of scope. So in a crude solution to this problem we have move them all to form controls.
However if we misspell the control name we can compile the application and when the code is eventualy used, we get the error: «2465 — Application-defined or object defined error». This is killing us, because there are, lots of references to global variables (16 applications within the one Access database).
If we use the syntax
We get the same error number but with a different message Eg. «2465 — Microsoft Access can’t find the field «lblControlmisspelt» refered in your expression».

Im getting the error message «Run time error 2465 application defined or object defined error» when trying to use SelectObject Lib «gdi32» in Access 2010. It’s used in code to create a gradient on a form.

Im getting the error message «Run time error 2465 application defined or object defined error» when trying to use SelectObject Lib «gdi32» in Access 2010. It’s used in code to create a gradient on a form.

I changed the lines that used TheObject.hdc to TheObject.hwnd and it all works now.

1. Have you added the WinAPI declaration for SelectObject function?
If yes, please post the declaration and the code that uses the function.
2, Just to be sure also: you are using Access 2010 32-bit and not 64-bit?

I am using some code by Daniel van den Berg re having a star rating on a form. On the subform it works ok.But when the subform is on the navigation Form (access 2007) it gives this error.
The code below is on the subform
I think is it due to relationships between the Navigation Form and the subform. Just need some help to figure this out please.

Hi Laurie,
Thank you for your reply. I had previously tried this reference plus many others! But still comes up with this error when you click on a star.
Perhaps the only way is to make the recipe form a pop up form which works, and then the user can rate his recipe.
What do you think?

When the form opens I just get this error, MS access can’t find the field ‘Form_Recipes-New referred to in your expression‘
So I think I will just go with a pop up form where the code works ok. Just wasted enough time on it.

I think that you may have fallen into the trap that I did (years ago).
Your sub-form does not sit DIRECTLY on your parent form, it is sat within a ‘container’ that holds your sub-form.
So, when you state: Forms![Form2]![Form_Recipes-new].Form.cRating, ‘Form_Recipes-new’ IS NOT referencing your sub-form, but your sub-forms CONTAINER (which then references your sub-form via the use of ‘.form’)
Right-click the OUTER edge of your sub-form (that is on your master form), and select ‘properties’.
You should see a completely different name, which is your sub-form container name.
It is THAT name that you should refer-to in:
Replace [Form_Recipes-new] with that container name.
Sorry if I’m wrong (great if I’m right and you now know how it works).

Runtime Error 2465. What is it, and how do I fix it?
In the attached db with several screenshots, I have a form, frmEmail, that allows me to select an employee from a combo box as shown in one of the screenshots.
The employee name is selected and after that I get a runtime error of 2465. I am not sure what a runtime error 2465 is.
The additional 2 screenshots, show the combo box that is in the code where it crashes and the output of runtime error 2465.
It is here that things begin to fall apart.
I built the procedure from what I found on the net. It worked, but then I found that I must add some code in the after update section of the combo box. I am not even sure what this code
is there for. It must be added. The combo operation worked fine before the code was added, now it crashes with a runtime 2465 error.How do I fix this?
Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What is it you expect to happen? As the error says, there is no control named «Position» for it to set focus to.

Let consider what I expected to happened. Anything, but a runtime error crash. I got this code in the after working on parameter query and noticed that it was to be put in after update on the combo box event tab.

Well, if you want something other than a crash, use a control that exists. There’s nothing wrong with the line itself; it’s trying to set focus to a named control. That control has to exist though. It doesn’t, so you get an error.
I’m curious, if you don’t know what it’s for, why did you include it? The goal of it is to move the form to the selected record. «Position» would be the name of the control you wanted to use for the search. In your code, it would search that field for the name in the combo.

I have learned to take some code that exists and works and modify it for my situation. It just seems the easy way. Now I saw this online and on YouTube. It works and it meets my needs, so I paid the most sincerest and highest complement I could; I stole it.
However, I do not understand it crashing on that line.It must have been left out in the explanation. So I was baffled as to why it crashed.
Please answer two thins. Why is this code there in the after update section (IE. what does it do)? Secondly how do I fix it it?

I’ve answered both:The goal of it is to move the form to the selected record. «Position» would be the name of the control you wanted to use for the search. In your code, it would search that field for the name in the combo.That control has to exist though. It doesn’t, so you get an error.
I don’t know how to say this any clearer. It errors because it refers to a control (textbox, etc) that doesn’t exist on your form. The code can’t set focus to someplace that doesn’t exist.

I am getting the following runtime error 2465 — Application-defined or Object-defined error when I run the following code.

2 things jump out at me first off.
1. Declare your recordset as DIM rs As DAO.Recordset
2. You need to change this line:

to this

Hello, I need some help
I received the same above error in this code when I did a compilation. It stops at the second subformFees under the Else. It is indicating that it cannot recognize this field name. It is not a field. It is the name of the form.

sometimes vba seems to object to the use of currentdb
i find throwing in the extra
dim dbs as database
set dbs=currentdb
set rst=dbs.openrecordset etc
avoids these «scope type errors»
