Setup cannot find the required setup controller file either there was a network error

I uninstalled Office 2007 from my old laptop through the control panel. When I tried to install Office 2010, it gives an error "setup cannot find the required setup controller file".

I had this problem and went searching all over the internet before I realized what was actually happening.

I downloaded an ISO file from microsoft, opened it and tried to run the setup.exe from there, which DOESN’T WORK.

If you tried to do this, then that is likely your problem. You need to mount the ISO file first — there are a bunch of free programs that do this. Virtual Clone Drive and PowerISO are 2. When you mount the ISO as a disc using one of these programs, the set up will run.

Have a look at this forum thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sr/officesetupdeploy/thread/0ed769de-ced8-4408-8bdb-96af5d9341cc

Some suggestions from the thread:

  1. Try to completely uninstall Office programs and then install Office 2010 again. To uninstall, follow the steps in this KB article: How do I uninstall Office 2003, Office 2007 or Office 2010 suites if I cannot uninstall it from Control Panel http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
  2. «I was getting this error when trying to depoly via startup script in group policy. The problem was that Authenticated Users needed read rights to the install directory. Not sure if this applies in your situation but make sure the account your installing with has rights to the install directory.»
  3. «I have seen this error because of running system restore does not bring back certain «xml» files from your setup controller directory. The fix is to re-run Office setup from your disk or web downloadable. You can find setup logs by clicking the start «or perl» button -> typing ‘%temp%’ (without the ‘ marks) and then look for setupexe(#####).log files. If you are still having trouble you can email me at micrey [at] microsoft [dot] com.»

Please expand on your answer if none of this helps.

Are you using Firefox as the default web browser? If «Yes», change the default browser to Internet Explorer while doing the installation.

This is the fix suggested by Microsoft and the fix used a few minutes ago. Office 2010 loaded OK on 2 machines which were using Intenet Explorer as default and failed to load on the Firefox default browser machine.

  • Open the «rar» project with WinRAR, not with 7zip
  • Go to admin directory
  • Go to «de-de»
  • You will see all the Office features e.g word14.opal, visio14.opal etc.
  • Extract each and every feature
  • Go to setup again. There will be no error this time.

  1. First mount the disk image with the help of software like daemon tools.
  2. Copy the content and paste it somewhere in your file system like D drive
  3. Now run the set up, it will work.

If you have a zip file then unzip the package on the drive you have installed windows. For ex: if you have windows on c drive then un pack the installation package on c drive and then run the setup. It will run without any hassle.

I also had the similar problem. I got winrar instead on 7zip and mounted the iso file. The setup file ran successfully without any error.

  • Hi. I just downloaded Expression Studio 1.0 and everything but Web installs. I keep getting this error:

«Setup cannot find the required setup controller file. Either there was a network,
error, an error reading from the CD/DVD, or the installation media, or a
problem with the package you downloaded.»

Does anyone know why this may have happened? Must I re-download it all over again?

All replies

  • You can download just the Expression Web trial if needed. This is typically a result of a failed install or possible remains of an old install and causing this one to fail.

Go to add/remove programs and see if Expression Web is listed there and if so remove it. Let me know if that goes through without any errors.

  • Will that effect the real version? I mean I have the downloaded version from JourneyEd, that was part of Dreamspark download. Will the trial mess with the real version?

  •  The expression web trial is a single install of expression web. This will not affect Expression Studio as studio is really just 4 installs of 4 different products and not truly one install.

The Trial version is the full version of expression web you just need the proper key to unlock it.

  • Ok. Well for some reason what I did worked. I re-installed the Web 2 beta and the deleted it and cleaned the registry. I realized that I still had files left in the programs folder. So I then deleted that and installed Web 1 and it worked. I didn’t need to use the trial. Thanks anyway Mike. You made me realize what I forgot. God Bless,

    Adrian.

  • Ahh so it was a bad install or remains of an old install causing the problem :)

Parallels Forums

  1. I’m running Parallels 6 in Snow Leopard, running Windows 7 Ultimate edition. Everything has been working great, till today I tried to install Microsoft Office 2010, and I get the error message:

«Setup cannot find the required setup controller file. Either there was a network error, and error reading from the CD, DVD, or other installation media, or a problem with the package you downloaded.»

I have tried installing directly from the installation DVD.
I’ve tried copying the contents of the DVD into the virtual machine, and running setup.exe.
I’ve tried copying the DVD to an image and mounting the image inside the virtual machine.
I’ve tried copying the contents of the DVD to a folder on the host, and connecting to it via shared folders.
I’ve tried installing both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Office 2010 (the virtual machine is 64-bit)
All result in the same error message. The funny thing is that when I try the install on a PC (running Windows 7 Ultimate natively) it works fine.

This is obviously not a problem with Office 2010, but with Parallels. I’ve searched these forums and many others, and cannot find a solution. Any ideas?

  2. Solution that worked for me

I, too, had the same problem. After some googling around, I found out that I needed to make sure that Parallels was connected to the DVD by clicking on Parallels, then navigating to Devices, then DVD and then finally clicking on the drive has the DVD. I then brought up a DOS window, found the drive associated with the DVD, pointed the dos session to that drive and then keyed in setup.exe and entered. At that point, the setup program kicked in and you are good to go.

  3. That worked great for installing Visio as well.

  4. Could you elaborate on this? In which way did you find the drive associated with the DVD through DOS, and how did you point the session to that drive? Through ‘cd’ or ‘start’ command? Because I can’t get DOS to recognize and start the .exe file

  5. Had the same problem. Read the advice about repointing to the DVD through the Parallels menu bar’s «Devices» — worked perfectly. No need for DOS. Just make sure that Parallels is looking at the right device. Mine was still set on «Disconnect» from the installation point.

  6. Worked for me as well. Head to install MS Office 2010 Plus on a Windows 8.1 machine, running on parallels 10. Thanks for the tip!
