  • In case anyone with Windows RT happens upon this page, I’m guessing this also applied to Windows RT.

    R.

  • How come we need to install a weird software.

Can’t it just be present in the OS like Server 2008 and all the others before that.

Server 2012 has been only problems so far why remove something that work just fine!!!

    This is frustrating!

  • Yes, your’re right. Windows 8/8.1/2012/2012R2 is just annoying. There are very few new features that are helping, but a ton of changes I didn’t wait for. No improvement in usability in my opinion.

  • Agreed. What a steaming pile of snot. Linux servers are looking better every day. Hell, even Yosemite Server as laughable as it is offers more «useful» capabilities out of the $24.99 box and certainly no metrosxual interface, gah.

My existence hinges on snapins and I like to fire up multiple servers at once and work on them as I get to them. Startup items should not be this hard. Nothing has worked to get msc to startup @ login. I have checked all areas, set gpo’s and still nada.

Pick your game up Microsoft. It is real easy to shift operating environments for file server functions over to the dark side. Make it easier for us admins, not make me wish I had just booted linux because dredging through endless piles of man files is what
    I was after…

      meh

  • Indeed this is very frustrating. i was using ccleaner anyway and there is an option in there for managing startup items, hope this helps. At least it’s a multipurpose tool.

  • This is crazy.. why would this useful feature be removed? No good reason at all.

This makes my blood boil. I was tempted to click «Report as abuse» instead of «reply»

  • I just use task scheduler.

that was almost but not quite entirely unlike me

  • To be frank I was pulling my hair out. I really wished MS would think more about the design of their Windows O/S. Startup in MSConfig was a very handy tool and it was absolutely pointless to remove it. It makes no sense but I have never really understood
MS’s mentality anyway in all my years in the IT industry. Nothing they do actually makes any sense to me.

  • Hi,

Please understand that the Startup tab is not present on Windows Server 2012. It is only on Windows 8. Maybe we could use the utility Autoruns to manage startup items. For details, please refer
    to the following article.

It seems as though this functionality was moved to the Task Scheduler. That’s what I just used and it works great. Note that I tried running a program on startup and it wasn’t working so I switched it to log on and it now works. To access the task scheduler,
it is in Computer Management. I get to is by right clicking on the Windows Icon in the bottom left of the screen and clicking Computer Management.

  • In Windows server 2012 R2, you can browse to:

C:Users<user name>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup and add any shortcut you want; just like we did/do in Windows 7.

When the user(s) logs in, it runs whatever you made the shortcut to/for.

    Works great! :)

If AppData isn’t shown, you can do one of the following:

    1) Open the run box and type %appdata%.  This takes you straight to the currently logged in user’s Roaming folder.  You can browse down from there.

    2) To permanently enable viewing of the AppData folder and other hidden files and folders, etc;

Open File Explorer, click on View from the tool bar, Options, Change folder and search options.

You’ll be presented with the same window we were used to seeing in older versions of Windows server and desktop.

Click the View tab, select the radio button that says, «Show hidden files, folders, and drives».

Then uncheck the four «Hide…» boxes underneath the radio button.

Acknowledge the prompt that your stuff can now be seen and voila, you can see everything.

    DISCLAIMER:

I wouldn’t do this for just anyone, but assuming you know what you’re doing, it helps a lot. Especially when trying to rename a file and you aren’t sure of the file extension.

    Good luck.

  • Just a follow-up here: not all startup items can be managed via the task scheduler or startup folder. This does not take into account the principal reason I would use msconfig: the startup registry locations. Sure you can simply enable/disable a scheduled
task or move files in/out of C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartUp or C:Users[UserName]AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart Menu to enable/disable them, but what about these registry keys that also contain startup items historically
    accessible via msconfig?

    HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

    HKLMSoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

    HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

Yes, I know you can manually open regedit and remove anything you want—but how would you ever get it back if you found that the removal caused a problem unless you first export the settings to a .reg file or record the settings
    manually?

Startup items in msconfig made this all simple & transparent.

  • Use registry editor for this simple issue.

If Startup apps are not appearing in the Task Manager & you see a message There are no startup items to display then this post is sure to help you. This issue can occur if the Startup folder or the Common Startup folder, which are Windows OS folders, have got inadvertently deleted, is their contents have become corrupted. When this happens, you may see a message in the Startup tab of the Task Manager:

There are no startup items to display.

There are no startup items to display in Task Manager

Task Manager is the place where you can find all the programs, processes, startup apps, and services running on your system. It is where you can keep an eye on every activity going on your Windows PC. Under its Startup tab, you can see all the Startup programs being displayed. But if the startup items are not appearing, even when you know that your Windows 11/10 has some programs that start automatically, here’s what you need to do to resolve the issue. Before you begin, you might want to use a Startup manager program to check if indeed you do have startups or not. If you do, but do not see them in the Task Manager, then read on.

  1. Restart the system
  2. Restart Windows Explorer
  3. Create a Startup folder
  4. Add application shortcut to the Startup folder
  5. Run SFC scan.

Now, let’s take a look at all these solutions in detail.

1] Restart the system

To begin with, restart your Windows PC. As it turns out, there can be a temporary glitch because of which the task manager is not displaying the startup apps. The best you can do to eliminate such glitches is to restart your Windows PC. So, restart the system and check if it solves the problem.

2] Restart Windows Explorer

Restart Windows Explorer

Restarting Windows Explorer is another effective solution you can try if the Task Manager is not displaying any startup apps. The reason is again the same – temporary bug and corruption errors. So, restart Windows Explorer and check if the problem is solved. To restart, photo the Windows apps.

  1. Press the Ctrl + Shift + Esc hotkeys to open the Task Manager.
  2. In the process tab, locate Windows Explorer. It will be present under the Apps section.
  3. Right-click on Windows Explorer, and from the context menu, choose Restart.

Check if the problem is fixed or not. If not, try the next solution.

3] Create a Startup folder

Startup folder

The next thing you can do is create a new Startup folder. As it turns out, the problem will occur if there isn’t any Startup folder present in Explorer of your Windows PC. If this is the case, Windows will struggle to locate the startup apps on your system, which will automatically cause the mentioned problem. You will have to create a new Startup folder to solve the issue. Here are the steps you need to follow to get the work done.

The Current Users Startup folder in Windows 11/10 is located at:

C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup

These programs start up for the currently logged-in user only. To directly access this folder, open Run, type shell:startup and hit Enter.

The All Users Windows 11/10 Startup folder is located at:

C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartUp

These programs start up for all users. To open this folder, bring up the Run box, type shell:common startup and hit Enter.

If you do not see the Startup folder in both these locations, do the following in each location:

  • Right-click on the location and select New.
  • From the context menu, choose Folder.
  • Create a new folder, and name it Startup.

Now, restart your system, and open the Task Manager. Head towards the Startup tab and check if you can find the applications listed or not.

See: Force close a Program which Task Manager cannot terminate

4] Add application shortcut to the Startup folder

The next thing you can try is to add the shortcut of the application you want to run during boot in the Startup folder. You can do so by following the below steps.

  1. Press the Windows key to open the Start Menu.
  2. In the space provided, type the application name you want to run during Startup.
  3. Right-click on the application name, choose More, and from the context menu, select Open file location. If you can’t find the Open file location option, it indicates that the particular application can’t run during Startup.
  4. In the application location, locate its shortcut.
  5. Now, press the Windows + R shortcut key to open the Run dialogue box.
  6. Type shell:startup and hit the Enter key. It will open the Startup folder.
  7. Copy-paste the shortcut of the application you want to launch during Startup in the startup folder.

Now, restart your system and check if the problem is solved or not. If the problem continues, try the next solution.

5] Run SFC scan

Another effective solution you can try is to run an SFC scan on your system. The SFC scan checks for broken Windows components on your system, as they can be the major reason behind the mentioned problem. You can run an SFC scan by following the below steps.

Open Command Prompt in administrator mode.

In the space provided, copy-paste the below-mentioned command and press enter.

sfc /scannow

Command Prompt will take a few minutes to execute the command. Once the process is complete, restart your system, launch Task Manager, and head towards the Startup tab. See if there are Startup applications present or not.

How do I add apps to Task Manager on Startup?

To manually configure apps to run during Startup, open the Run dialogue box. Type shell:startup, and hit Enter. It will open the Startup folder. Now, paste the application’s shortcut you want to launch during Startup in the folder. That’s it.

Add, Delete, Enable, or Disable Startup Items in Windows 10

    Hello Greg, *Smile

Windows will not allow elevated programs to run at startup by default.

As a workaround, you could create an elevated shortcut of SpeedFan using the method in the tutorial below, then place that elevated shortcut in your Startup folder.

Elevated Program Shortcut without UAC Prompt — Create — Windows 7 Help Forums

  4. Good news and somewhat interesting, but expected news. I got it working, and I discovered that, as you’re probably aware, if you screw up the task, but not the shortcut, there’s no need to change the shortcut when you fix the task.

  5. Great tutorial!

I do have one question though

I want to script enabling a program in the task manager. After we install the program it shows as a Task Manager entry and says enabled. We disable it for our image but we want to be able to enable it with a batch or powershell script.

Do you know where the «enabled» or «disabled» setting is in the registry?

The only place I can find a line to the program in the registry for startup is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
but that only point to the location of the program, It doesn’t say whether it’s enabled or not.

  6. Brink

Hello Arsenal, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

As a workaround, you could add (enable) or remove (disable) it from the registry at that location.

  7. Add, Delete, Enable, or Disable Startup Items in Windows 10

    Thanks for the Add *Smile

I would agree with you, but what I am seeing right now is that it is that location (so would be enabled in theory) but when I check task manager it is disabled

  8. Brink

Yep, you’ll need to enable it in Task Manager first. Afterwards, the workaround to add/remove should work.

    UPDATE:

The enable/disable startup items from Task Manager are stored in the registry keys below. You can export this registry key when you enable and disable the startup program, then edit the .reg file to only include the startup programs you want to toggle. *Smile

    (Current User)
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerStartupApprovedRun

    (All Users)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerStartupApprovedRun

  9. Thanks Brink,

I guess we just wont be able to do what we need to do with it. We have 400+ machines already imaged. we were just hoping to be able to script the «enabled» setting without having to touch every machine first.

  10. Brink

You should be able to enable it on one machine, export the key, then use a .reg, .bat, or .vbs file to add/merge the key to the others if that will work for you.

  11. That’s true… but there is still nothing to say whether it is enabled or disabled. Just because it exists in that registry doesn’t mean that they will all be enabled…. I would be over writing the key with the same key…

They keys for computers with the programs enabled are exactly the same as the keys for the programs that are disabled.

Add, Delete, Enable, or Disable Startup Items in Windows 10

The Task Manager will still show it as enabled or disabled as usual.

The binary data value for the startup item in that key should be different when enabled and disabled.

I just tested, and can verify that if you merge the .reg file that was exported when it was enabled, it will enable it again if it’s currently disabled without having to restart or sign out/in.

  13. I think I found what was throwing me off!!!

The programs I am working with are 32bit programs installed on a 64bit PC So the registry key to enable those on startup for all users is:

HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerStartupApprovedRun32 (instead of the Run key)

I didn’t check but I would assume it would be the same path as above for single user as well!

  14. I use Autoruns by Sysinternals. You can find the file download on the Microsoft website. The file doesn’t say that it is or isn’t compatible with Windows 10, though I found it to work wonderfully.
