When the Steam store encounters any kind of an issue with a purchase you are trying to make, the purchase does not go through and you are presented with an error message that reads:

An unexpected error has occurred. Your purchase has not been completed. Please contact Steam Support.

Unlike other Steam errors that prevent you from launching games on the Steam client or installing/updating games, this error renders an affected user unable to make any purchases whatsoever on the platform. Being unable to purchase games from the Steam store can prove to be incredibly infuriating, which is why this error really needs to go. This specific issue can be caused by any one of a number of different things.

What causes the “An unexpected error has occurred” error message on the Steam store?

• Some kind of a temporary processing issue caused by a hiccup on the Steam client’s end or the server’s end, or a problem with the particulars of your order such as the billing address you specified.
• An IP proxy or VPN being in effect. The Steam store is programmed to decline any purchases initiated while the client’s IP address is masked or spoofed.
• The Steam servers are responsible for processing game purchases and other transactions being down.

How to get rid of the “An unexpected error has occurred” error message?

There are a number of different solutions you can use to try and get rid of this error and get your purchase on the Steam store to go through successfully, and which one ends up working for you will depend heavily on what’s causing this issue in your case.

1. Retry the purchase

You might be seeing this error message because of a temporary processing issue or some kind of a problem with the particulars of your order. In such cases, you should be able to successfully make your purchase by simply retrying it one or (a maximum of) two times. As you retry your purchase, double-check (and even triple-check!) the particulars of your purchase – especially your billing information – to make sure everything is in order and there’s no reason for Steam to prevent your transaction from going through. However, it is strongly advised that you do not retry failed purchases more than a few times in order to avoid overloading the system or sending duplicate requests to the system simultaneously.

2. Disable any VPN programs or IP proxies you have running

VPNs, IP proxies, and pretty much anything that masks or spoofs your computer’s IP address is a big no-no on the Steam store. Steam’s systems are inherently designed to prevent any purchases initiated by masked or spoofed IP addresses from going through successfully, so if you want to make a purchase on the Steam store, VPN programs and IP proxies will have to go.

1. Launch the VPN program or IP proxy you currently have enabled on your computer.
2. Locate the toggle or setting to enable and disable the program, and disable it. Disable the VPN application

If you have a VPN set up locally on your computer, you are going to have to disable it for the time being if you want to be able to make purchases on the Steam store. You will also have to make sure any other programs or utilities capable of masking your computer’s IP address are not in effect.

3. Wait for the underlying issue to be resolved

If none of the solutions listed and described above have worked for you, there’s a good chance you’re experiencing this problem because the Steam servers responsible for processing purchases and other transactions are down. If that is true, there is not really much for you to do but wait for these servers to come back up again, at which point you can retry your purchase and it should complete successfully. Be sure to keep checking in on the problem while you wait for its underlying cause to be dealt with.

4. Contact Steam Support

If you seem to be simply unable to rid yourself of this error message and successfully make a purchase on the Steam store, it might be time to call in the big guns and contact Steam Support.

1. Make your way to the Helpsection of the Steam store, where you are to specify the issue you are facing and select the purchase that keeps failing. Specify your issue and select the failed purchase

Steam unexpected error when purchasing

I have the same problem when I try to add some fund and steam support reply is not helping at all, so I buy wallet from other seller / using code instead. After that I have the same problem again when I tried to buy some games at steam store, I contacted steam support and after 18 days (4 reply between me and steam support) their reply still not helping..only ask whether I’m using VPN or not, etc. And now, today at 1AM GMT+7 [I’m from Indonesia], valve release new CM Arcana in dota2 store, so I sell my CSGO keys in market and have S$39.90 steam wallet and then try to buy CM Arcana at dota2 store. Guess what?

I already tried many ways to solved it. Waiting, Steam Support, Steam FAQ, Googling, Search in forum, Youtube, etc. And the conclusion is : «Just wait, maybe 1-2 days, 1-2 weeks or maybe a year..It depends on your luck..just try to buy it again at random times or try your luck at steam support because from my personal experience, steam support reply didn’t help me at all.

Ok, So I manually Changed my IP Address. Came back after making dinner and Voiala ! I completed my transaction. All is working now. If you know how to change your IP address, maybe give that a shot. PPPoE Users should just have to disconnet / reconnect. DHCP users may have to unpower cable modem, change the WAN MAC Address of their router, unpower their router. Reconnect power to their Modem, then Reconnect power to their Router. Best of luck People. I was battling with this for 2 days approx.

Just power cycle all the ISP equipment (Modem, Router, etc.)
Leave it turned off for about 90 secs. Then turn them back on. On most ISPs, they have a pool of IPs to choose from and cycling the ISP modem power should trigger an IP change.

If you don’t know your ISP host IP#, then go here to see it first.

Then go back there after power cycling your modem/router. And it should be different. If not, leave the modem off for like 5 mins instead.

On devices such as Modem/Router, do not try to cycle their power on/off too quickly, as they may result in ISP sync error. In which u would have to recycle their power all over again. If your modem/router does not have a manual on/off switch, remove the power cable from it instead.

Even though my issue is resolved, I would like to make sure that everyone who has posted in this thread is aware and has their issue resolved as well. Since I submitted a support ticket, it took about 48 hours before I could purchase games again. No repsonse what so ever from Valve / Support team in that time. So hopefully *fingers crossed* this is fixed within that duration or has been fixed already. Maybe it was just a coincidense that when I changed my IP that it was fixed.

N1 to Steam becoming as bad as EA is.

I’ve had this happen before over the years (rare but it has happened) a few times resetting my modem did the trick. So it is not just some new issue due to the latest Dec 3rd Client Update.

On times when it didn’t I loaded up Steam Client, click change user to get it to log out fully.
Exit Steam and Reboot Windows. Then go back to Steam Client and login, SteamGuard come up, put in my code and all. Worked fine after that and purchasing was no longer an issue of any kind.

If purchasing from inside Steam Client appears to be an issue and u’ve tried the usual stuff, try going to Steam Store from within a browser (for this I suggest IE w/ InPrivate Mode ON) and try purchasing this way. Upon a purchase success, go back to Steam Client and your new game should be listed in Library > All Games.

Эта опция нужна вам для оплаты на сумму больше 3 тыс. рублей. Это как раз мой случай. Я купил в интернет магазине газовую плиту Bosh. При оплате товара на сумму 22 тыс. рублей мне выдалось вот такое сообщение:

Я был в замешательстве, не знал что делать. Сначала я думал, что это проблема магазина. Но сначала я все таки позвонил в банк. В моем случае это был Промсвязьбанк и карта Доходная.
Позвонив в поддержку Промсвязьбанка, мне предложили сначала пройти процедуру аутентификации

1. Назвать 4 последних цифры номера карты
2. Назвать фамилию имя отчество полностью
3. Назвать кодовое слово.

Далее для подключения услуги 3d Secure от меня потребовали 2 номера из таблицы разовых ключей.  Вроде как услугу подключили, но через полчаса оплата снова не прошла. Позвонил в банк — сказали ожидайте когда подключится — услуга подключается не сразу. Нужно подождать.

Я решил проверить, подключена ли услуга. Я залогинился в Интернет-банк — увидел, что такая услуга есть(в ПСБ ритейл это можно посмотреть на странице карты, щелкнув по номеру карты)

Еще раз попытка оплаты — мне высветилось окно, где я должен был ввести код подтверждения. После заполнения данных карты мне пришло СМС с кодом для оплаты

Далее вуаля — заказ наконец то оплачен. Я получил следующее окно и статус заказа в магазине изменился на «Оплачен»
Мой заказ доставили в пункт назначения, где я его заберу в течение месяца. Главное оплата прошла.
