Disk write error steam linux
When I try to install Hearts of Iron IV in my Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, it always says «disk write error».
An error occured while updating Hearts of Iron IV (disk write error):
home/ /.local/share/Steam/steamapps/downloading/394360/wiki/load.php@debug=false&lang=en&modules=mediawiki.action.view.categoryPage.styles%7Cmediawiki.helplink%2CsectionAnchor%7Cmediawiki.legacy.commonPrint%2Cshared%7Cmediawiki.skinning.interface%7Cskins.vector.styles&only=styles&skin=vector.css
Can anybody help me fix that?
You do have enough free space?
I do have, a lot of space
Does this happen when you are trying to install other games too?
1- go to steam settings, clear download cache and try again
2- change download server location on steam settings
3- go to steam settings and create a secondary games folder somewhere and try again (choosing the new folder when asked by the game installer dialog)
If nothing works:
— Is any step to that folder path following a symbolic link?
— Is the steam games library in an NTFS partition?
I’m having the same issue. The problem seems to be that this file name is too long for ext4: load.php@debug=false&lang=en&modules=mediawiki.action.view.categoryPage.styles%7Cmediawiki.helplink%2CsectionAnchor%7Cmediawiki.legacy.commonPrint%2Cshared%7Cmediawiki.skinning.interface%7Cskins.vector.styles&only=styles&skin=vector.css
EDIT: Seems like I was wrong, it had to do something with my encrypted home. I solved it by moving my .steam directory outside my home, then mounting it back to it’s original location.
FWIW, in my case (home directory on a NFS share, steam games on /opt/steam), I was able to solve the issue by linking the downloading directory to a local partition, like so:
/.steam/steam/steamapps rm -rf downloading/ ln -s /opt/steam/downloading/ downloading

Yep, if you use NFS4, the solution is to make downloading/ directory be a symlink to some other local file system (i.e. ext4 or tmpfs), possibly use NFS3 with some local_lock=flock mount option, or use a LD preload to disable use of flock for steam, it should be relatively safe I guess.
Unfortunately it is still not fixed in Steam client as of today.
I had this issue installing straight to /opt/games installing a Valheim server. I solved this with permissions (sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /opt/games) in case anybody has this issue.
Thank you, although my path was /usr/games, changing the permission like this helped me get my Valheim server installed.
i got the disk write error when trying to install proton experimental.
in my case the problem seems to be that my main partition is luks encrypted and it has something to do with that.
i created a second UNencrypted ext4 partition and set it as default installation dir in settings.
now everything works fine.
@giluks
that’s bizarre that proton won’t be installed/work properly from a luks-encrypted partition. it should be totally transparent and just work, as it does for every other app except ones that need to actually handle partitioning and disk encryption.
it’s a hint that Valve may be implementing their library data handling at a lower abstraction level than it should. and coherent with several reports of steam sometimes not working over some linux-compatible partition types, not just NTFS
did you open an issue on their github bug tracker for this?

Disk write error steam linux
I’m using linux manjaro xfce and I’m an ultra noob to linux so please excuse any mistakes
when I’m downloading a game steam downloads for a while, then says disk write error and stops, then I have to continue the download again and it starts downloading then it gives the same error and pauses and so on
To which directory/disk are you downloading? How much space is free? How much had been downloaded?
is it ntfs, ext4, exfat?
To which directory/disk are you downloading? How much space is free? How much had been downloaded?
I’m downloading into a HDD mounted into home, it has approx 1 TB of space free and as for how much I dont get exactly what you mean, it just says «disk write error» and pauses the download after every 1 GB downloaded or so
The questionm was aiming at the possibility it’s not downloading anything (not mounted, no write permissions, disk full, . ). If it does, all those are ruled out. Maybe the disk has actual physical write problems?
It’s a possibility but I doubt this, it’s only a few months old and İt was working completely fine in a windows OS before the switch.
Also yeah, it does download stuff, I can bruteforce it to download by just starting the download again whenever it gives the error, but that would be problematic for bigger downloads

Disk write error steam linux
1. check your disk health with this command :
$ fsck /dev/ (sda1 = Drive C , sda2 = Drive D and etc )
2. check disk space with this command :
$ df -h(human-readable)
3. check if your partition is not read-only mode with this command :
$ mount
if it’s read-only mode so remount it to rw mode with this command :
$ mount -o remount,rw
4. if you want to work with a graphical mode just install gparted on your system :
$ apt-get install gparted — yum install gparted .
——————————————————————————————-
P.S : You know this is only my overall suggestion , Linux is a garbage OS for home uses , This is not my opinion . In Linux Essentials courses there is a theory course called OS comparison ( MAC , Windows , Linux ) in that course these are listed :
— Windows Client , MAC OS : Great for home uses
— Windows Server : Lockdown mode , Active Directory , Managing large companies and Domain Controller
— Linux : Web Server Apache2 and Nginx , Samba File Server
Ok i know some people like to work with it , But if i worked in a valid or large company in the world , I had an idea to make a Linux Distribution Appropriate for games and home uses because Linux demand very lower sources to play heavy games compare to windows . But as a IT employee i don’t suggest linux for personal computers right now , Only if could i have an idea to make a gaming dist for linux OS .
Did you Dev Null the drive by accident?
Sounds like its Dev Nulled.
Far as the other rhetoric regarding OS choice.
Use what is comfortable for you.
Colonel Linus ( Computer Science History Lesson / Electronics Engineering Lesson ), the inventor of LINUX GNU licensed kernal, wanted a home version of UNIX. Linus was granted this GNU License, and Linux was born from its Daddy, UNIX.
There are many great flavors of Linux out there for home use, although not for the AMATEUR.
Debian, Ubuntu are the most popular.
Parrot OS, and Kali Linux are the most secure. And used for Cybersecurity. Although very stripped down far as functionality, and bloated with extra security tools.
Redhat, etc. are more for Corporations, Governments, and Universities.
But they all use the same basic Col. Linus Linux GNU kernal.
Winblowz is the most easiest to use, although it is also bloatware, and spyware ( telemetry is the captured data being sent to microcrap ). Although, since Bill Gates left, its the least secure OS out there. And has a scam running with updating every few years nowadays. Versus 9x-XP/Vista. Like how I think only 10/11 are supported at the moment. Winblows Servers are ok, but more vulnerable to hacking.
Far as Crapple, Crapple is Crapple. From the IIe ( monochrome ) basic, to the first Macintosh IOS. Crapple. To the newer I-Crap.
At the end of the day all ya need is a command prompt.
But you should take a course in LINUX ADMINISTRATION before ever using Linux OS.
No matter what the flavor.
That would help you when encountering problems like this.
To Troubleshoot, Diagnose, and Repair any issues.
That said, did you Dev Null your drive by accident?
Sounds like its Dev Nulled ( nothing will write to drive ).

Steam disk write error linux
What i can try to repair the problem? All of the games that are asking for an update and reporting a write disk error are running with proton.
My system is ubuntu 16.04 x64, with the steam beta client, and the problem is new. Steam OS games are updating properly: the problem is only affecting windows games running with proton.
Here are some results I found with «Disk Write Error+Steam+Linux» keywords from my quick Google Search.
You can visit the Hardware and Operating Systems forums, you may want to include more details about your computers specs and games that give this error, and are you using the Steam client beta, Wine compatibility, etc..
Steam Forums: Hardware and Operating Systems
https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/11/
I read common scenarios before posting, like those expressed in your answer:
«A ‘disk write error’ will just be what it says: Either you don’t have enough space on the disk or the disk is corrupted for example.»
If you read the description of my problem, the disk is ok, and im sure of it because i have tested it, and games that are steam-os (installed in the same disk) are working. The third link you offered is also focused in that possibility.
«Go to your Steam library directory, and symlink ‘SteamApps’ to ‘steamapps’»
i also wrote that the windows based games were working fine until the lastest update. this solution is for people that try to access their games from a desktop link, which is something im not doing.

So as advice, before attempting to offer an answer, please read the question more carefully.

home/ /.local/share/Steam/steamapps/downloading/394360/wiki/load.php@debug=false&lang=en&modules=mediawiki.action.view.categoryPage.styles%7Cmediawiki.helplink%2CsectionAnchor%7Cmediawiki.legacy.commonPrint%2Cshared%7Cmediawiki.skinning.interface%7Cskins.vector.styles&only=styles&skin=vector.css
FWIW, in my case (home directory on a NFS share, steam games on /opt/steam), I was able to solve the issue by linking the downloading directory to a local partition, like so:

Yep, if you use NFS4, the solution is to make downloading/ directory be a symlink to some other local file system (i.e. ext4 or tmpfs), possibly use NFS3 with some local_lock=flock mount option, or use a LD preload to disable use of flock for steam, it should be relatively safe I guess.
Unfortunately it is still not fixed in Steam client as of today.
@giluks
that’s bizarre that proton won’t be installed/work properly from a luks-encrypted partition. it should be totally transparent and just work, as it does for every other app except ones that need to actually handle partitioning and disk encryption.
it’s a hint that Valve may be implementing their library data handling at a lower abstraction level than it should. and coherent with several reports of steam sometimes not working over some linux-compatible partition types, not just NTFS
did you open an issue on their github bug tracker for this?
No problems with Proton (or anything else) with encrypted partitions for me.
Disk write error can also happen when an update is unable to replace a directory, usually because it is not empty. Making a new filesystem would fix that by accident.

SteamCMD disk write error with force_install_dir option #7843
Hello I am using the latest steamcmd on Ubuntu 18.04, today I got an error when I tried to install the server (everything was fine yesterday)
Error: ERROR! Failed to install app ‘4020’ (Disk write failure)
The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:
I can also confirm this issue. We’re seeing this across hundreds of different environments that used to work fine just 24 hours ago. We’ve confirmed no widespread disk or permissions issues.
Some other reports too:
I’m getting the same error. I tried both in a new docker image based on ubuntu:18.04 and on the dedicated server.
Using root or another user does not change the error.
Removing +force_install_dir will install the server correctly but in the default steamapps directory.
Happens across all our (windows) servers too. Confirmed the same issue on at least 30 nodes across Europe.
I can confirm that the workaround when not using the force_install_dir command works.
Yea, having this issue on some servers since yesterday!
Also experiencing this across multiple Linux distros.
Same error here on Debian, is this something that will be fixed in an upcoming release of SteamCMD or do we have to do the workaround from @Cherry to «fix» the problem?
Also is there some way to actually inform Valve about this or is this the official way?
This error exists on debian as well. Please fix ASAP!
@kisak-valve Any chance we could get this fixed?
@Cherry thank you so much for this temporary fix
Can someone FIX THIS ALREADY? how can it take this long time. I cant even start the servers because the script is not even «quitting» like it should.
«how can it take this long time.» The fact that they messed this up this big in the first place is pretty bad.. Whoever did it may be working harder on their resume then they now are at valve.. (or perhaps they should be..) It’s pretty sad that a CDN and game platform as large as valve has such crap testing for something this core to their business. Epic/Blizzard and other CDNs aren’t taking marketshare for no good reason.
Valve, step up your game. Too many people depend on your software working right for you to let stuff like this slide..

Steam disk write error linux
Steam for Linux
I’m using linux manjaro xfce and I’m an ultra noob to linux so please excuse any mistakes
when I’m downloading a game steam downloads for a while, then says disk write error and stops, then I have to continue the download again and it starts downloading then it gives the same error and pauses and so on
To which directory/disk are you downloading? How much space is free? How much had been downloaded?
is it ntfs, ext4, exfat?
To which directory/disk are you downloading? How much space is free? How much had been downloaded?
I’m downloading into a HDD mounted into home, it has approx 1 TB of space free and as for how much I dont get exactly what you mean, it just says «disk write error» and pauses the download after every 1 GB downloaded or so
It’s a possibility but I doubt this, it’s only a few months old and İt was working completely fine in a windows OS before the switch.
Also yeah, it does download stuff, I can bruteforce it to download by just starting the download again whenever it gives the error, but that would be problematic for bigger downloads
There’s somebody else experiencing the same just yesterday as well.

Steam disk write error linux
I’ve searched the forums for solutions to the error I’m having, but nothing has worked. The problem I have is with two games, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and War of the Roses. I purchased War of the Roses during the Weekend Steam Sale, and Chivalry during the Holiday Steam Sale. So, feeling in the mood for some Medieval fighting, I began the download for both items concurrently, along with an update to Left4Dead 2. Left4Dead managed to update successfully, but I wasn’t able to launch either Chivalry or War of the Roses, both games gave me this error: http://imgur.com/iLjoFtL
The issue persisted after both a Steam restart, and a computer restart.
So I figured somewhere along the line the download had become corrupted, so I went into my library right clicked each game and clicked «Delete local content». After deleting both games from my hard drive, I proceeded to download Garry’s Mod to test if it was the games or something wrong with my hard drive. Garry’s Mod had no trouble installing, launching, and running. I exited GMod, and downloaded Chivalry (with no other downloads occurring). Same issue, again: http://imgur.com/iLjoFtL
Here’s where it gets even stranger. I wasn’t able to locate either the War of the Roses or the Chivalry folder before I deleted it, so I’m not sure where it is downloading the files (ie. it wasn’t in in the steamapps folder). Right clicking the games in the library, clicking properties, and then clicking «Browse Local Files» did nothing either.
Any suggestions? Anything I should try? Thank you!
MY SOLUTION: Exit Steam. In Windows Explorer go to your Steam directory (C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/) and make sure the directory is NOT read only. Then right click your Steam launch icon and click ‘Run as administrator».
I’m not sure why this suddenly happened, I’d never encountered this in over 25 game installations. Thanks to everyone who tried to help!

Stop dropping downloads and get back to gaming
The Steam disk write error can occur when you’re downloading or updating a game you bought on the Steam platform. These messages typically appear when you attempt to install or download a new game or update a previously installed game. It can also occur when you try to launch a game that needs an update.
Instructions in this article apply to the Steam client for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Cause of Steam Disk Write Errors
The Steam disk write error appears anytime Steam is unable to download and save game data to the storage drive on your computer during an update or new installation. It’s usually accompanied by one of the following error messages:
An error occurred while installing game title (disk write error): C:Program Files (x86)steamsteamappscommongame_titleAn error occurred while updating game_title
An error occurred while installing game_title
The disk write error can happen when:
- The drive or Steam folder is write-protected.
- There are defects in the hard drive.
- Your antivirus or firewall blocks Steam from downloading and saving data.
- There are corrupt or outdated files in the Steam directory.
How to Fix the Steam Disk Write Error
If you experience the Steam disk write error, try these fixes:
-
Restart Steam. The easiest way to rule out a temporary issue is to close the Steam client, reopen it, and then download or play it again.
-
Restart the computer. If closing and reopening Steam doesn’t resolve the issue, rebooting the PC could fix it by closing ongoing processes that might interfere with Steam.
Why Does Restarting Fix Many Computer Problems?
-
Remove write protection from the drive. Write protection prevents a computer from altering or adding files to a folder or an entire drive. If you believe this to be the source of the problem, verify which drive your Steam games are stored on, and then remove write protection from that drive.
-
Turn off the read-only setting for the Steam folder. If the Steam directory is set to read-only, then the whole directory is write-protected. Go to the Steam folder properties and make sure the read-only setting isn’t selected.
-
Run Steam as an administrator. Running software as an administrator gives it extra permissions and can fix several odd problems.
-
Delete corrupted files. When something goes wrong while Steam is downloading a game, it may create a corrupted file that causes the Steam disk write error. To fix this problem, go to the main Steam folder and open the steamapps/common directory. If you see a file with the same name as the game you’re trying to play that is 0 KB in size, delete it and attempt to download or launch the game again.
-
Verify the integrity of the game files. In your Steam library, right-click the game and select Properties. Then, go to the Local Files tab and select Verify Integrity of Game Files. If Steam finds any corrupt files, it automatically replaces those files.
If your game uses a launcher that downloads additional updates, do not complete this step. Doing so will replace your updated game with the base launcher, and you will then need to re-download the updates through the launcher.
-
Clear the Steam download cache. If the Steam download cache is corrupted, it can cause disk write errors. To fix this problem, open Steam and navigate to Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache.
-
Move Steam to a different drive. In some cases, there may be a problem with the drive that prevents Steam from writing to it. If you have multiple drives or partitions, move the Steam installation folder to a different drive.
If this step resolves the Steam disk write error, check the original drive for errors.
-
Check the drive for errors. In some cases, this process can identify bad sectors and tell Windows to ignore those sectors in the future. If the problem persists or gets worse, you may need to replace the hard drive.
-
Disable the antivirus program or add exceptions. In rare instances, antivirus programs can incorrectly identify Steam as a threat and prevent it from downloading and saving game data. If the Steam disk write error goes away with the antivirus disabled, add an exception for Steam in the antivirus scans.
How to Disable Norton Antivirus
-
Disable the firewall or add exceptions. If temporarily disabling the firewall fixes the problem, add an exception to the Windows firewall.
