Question

I am running Ms SQL Server Standard Ed. with IIS 6.0 on a Windows 2003 Server.

Currently having some problems relating to access to database. IIS seem to work fine, as the welcome page which doesn’t require access to the SQL database can be opened without a problem. The page which authenticates the login, which contains a fileDSN info to access the SQL via ODBC gives me an error. It says :

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error ‘80040e4d’

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user ‘sa’.

But when i created the DSN file under ODBC, the test completed succesfully, using SQL Server authentication with user login and password.

On the other side, At the SQL Enterprise Manager, I check the authentication method, and it is set to Windows and SQL server (Mixed mode).

When i start my server, I receive this message in the event viewer,

SuperSocket info: (SpnRegister) : Error 1355

Does this has anything to do with the problem i m facing?

I tried reinstalling SQL Server, but i still receive this message. I even copied the database and the www pages to publish from my desktop, but no difference.

SuperSocket Info: (SpnRegister) : Error 1355.

For hardware upgratdation we have to move our database server(MSSQL
2000) from a P3(Window 2003) machine to a p4(Windows 2003) machine. We
have replicated the data from P3 machine to P4 machine.

the replication was success full.

After this we have changed the name of the p4 machine to tha of p3
machine.

now when we try to connect to the new p4 machine using the windows
authentication we are not getting errror «Cannot generate SSPI
Context.»

for solving it we have tried to change the name of the sqlserver.
REF:
http://groups.google.co.in/group/mi. 0b0966be28f835e

while replication the database we have made the mssql service run under
a network account.
this could be a possible reason for not able to register with the ADS.
Later we have changed it to run under the local user account.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Error — SuperSocket Info: (SpnRegister): Error 8206

We just installed SQL Server 2000 (as part of SBS 2003) including service pack 3a.

When we reboot the server a message pops up that a service did not start properly.

The error is ‘SuperSocket info: (SpnRegister): Error 8206’.

I have searched here and other places on the Internet without any success.

All assistance is appreciated as we cannot continue.

SuperSocket Info: Bind Failed On TCP Port

Got a SQL Server 200 with two instances
1.SEAWEED
2.SEAWEEDUAT

After a recent reboot, both my instances weren’t able to be registered using Enterprise Manager or by clients.

Both MSSQL and SQL Server Agent on both instances run using a domain account user and were running.

Looking at some microsoft articles, i changed the Services on both instance
under a domain administrator account.

Now i am only able to register the default instance while the named instance keeps coming up with SuperSocket Info: Bind failed on TCP port 1078

Also created a DNS alias for the named instance but this did not resolve the issue.

Does anyone have any solutions/ideas of a quick fix/ workaround ?

How To Get More Info For Error Messages

So far I have not been able to figure out how to get more info
regarding the sql server errors. For example, I get this error
from sql server query analyzer (this just an example):

————
Server: Msg 128, Level 15, State 1, Line 5
The name ‘does’ is not permitted in this context.
Only constants, expressions, or variables allowed here.
Column names are not permitted.
————

Is there a way to find more information regarding this error, or
like Oracle has MeataLink, where you can search, if someone else
already got this error and how it got resolved?

Or how you folks go about resolving errors you get? Is it based
on trail and error, or experience (like already encountered this
type before) etc.?

Last Used DB Info

I’ve inherited the administration of two SQL Servers one 7.0 and the other 2000. We are looking into upgrading to 2005 so I’m gathering all the info I can on the DBs and applications using them.

Now, how can I check if a DB is currently in use? Is there a way to find out when a DB was last accessed?

By the way, I’ve never done DB administration so you can figure out how desperate I’m getting.

Exception_Access_Violation Info

To all:
I have installed a new Compaq 7000 with NT4.0 sp3 and Sql Server 6.5 sp4 into production about two weeks ago.
Everything went fine until yesterday. Around noon I received 2 Exception_Access_Violation about a second apart
with two differend spids. About 20 mins later I got the Out of connections message and sql server stopped
reponding. I Could not stop sql server and had to reboot the server. I have configured the connections at 600
and generally we average a little over 400. Everything seems to be running fine now but I would like to get some
information from all the great minds out there!

What exectly is Exception_Access_Violation? Can I figure out what caused it or can I debug it? Do you think that the
EAV caused the out of connections error? Any help, insight would help greatly!

I want to keep track of some application statistics.

Column Name
DIR_CATEGORY_LVL_ID1 = 100
DIR_CATEGORY_LVL_ID2 = 200

Some Info On MS SQL Server

I have developed a great intrest in the MS SQL Server recently. I was just wondering if it was worth putting my time into learning this system. In the members opinion would SQL server be technically fit? Does it have a good campacity and flexibility? These areas are quite important to me. I would also like to know how web friendly the server is and its ability to handle complex data.

Any help would be much appriciated.

Newbie Need Some Info

I have been asked buy my boss to try and solve a problem. We have a access database which has a hell of a lot of entries. We want to use sql server to store this database now.

We want to be able to print reports and analyze the data by running queries etc.

Apart from the obvious sql server software, what would be required to acheive this, would i need a dedicated front end built?

Im just testing water at the moment looking for any info that i might need.

BUG #: 232774 (SHILOH_BUGS)

SYMPTOMS

When SQL Server starts on a computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or Microsoft SQL Server 2005, the SQL Server program always attempts to register the virtual server in the Active Directory. The following event may be logged in the event log:
SuperSocket info: (SpnRegister): Error 8344 SuperSocket Info: (SPNRegister) : Error 1355 SuperSocket info: SpnUnRegister() : Error 8344.

NoteError 1355 is equal to ERROR_NO_SUCH_DOMAIN. Error 8344 is equal to insufficient permissions to perform the registration operation. This is shown as a warning for the SPNRegister function and as an error for the SpnUnRegister function.

This message is not an error message. This text is only a warning that SQL Server cannot register a service principal name (SPN). This indicates that the security mechanism that will be used is Microsoft Windows NT ChallengeResponse (NTLM) authentication instead of Kerberos authentication.

These messages should only be considered a problem if your SQL Server installation requires Kerberos authentication or the network security settings prevent fallback to NTLM negotiation. Otherwise, these messages can be ignored safely.

CAUSE

The message usually appears because the SQL Server service account is running as a domain user who does not have requisite permissions to register SPNs. With Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3), you can enable Kerberos authentication on server clusters. For instructions on how to do this, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

319723 Information about SQL Server 2000 Kerberos support, including SQL Server virtual servers on server clusters

RESOLUTION

You can also edit the account’s Access Control Settings permissions in the Active Directory directory service to enable the Read servicePrincipalName permission and the Write servicePrincipalName permission for the SQL Service account.

Warning If you use the Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other LDAP version 3 clients, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require that you reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, or both Windows and Exchange. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems caused by incorrectly modifying Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk.

WORKAROUND

To resolve these type messages and enable the SQL Server service to create SPNs dynamically for your SQL Server instances, ask your domain administrator to add the appropriate permissions and user rights to the SQL Server startup accounts.

To enable the SQL Server service account to establish SPNs correctly on startup, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type Adsiedit.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the ADSI Edit window, expand Domain [DomainName], expand DC= RootDomainName, expand CN=Users, right-click CN=AccountName, and then click Properties.

Notes

    • DomainName represents the name of the domain.
    • RootDomainName is a placeholder for the name of the root domain.
    • AccountName represents the account that you specify to start the SQL Server service.
    • If you have specified Local System to start the SQL Server service, AccountName represents the account that you use to log on to Microsoft Windows.
    • If you have specified a domain user account for the SQL Server service, AccountName represents the domain user account.
  1. In the CN=AccountName Properties dialog box, click the Security tab.
  2. On the Security tab, click Advanced.
  3. In the Advanced Security Settings dialog box, make sure that the SELF user is listed under Permission entries. If the SELF user is not listed, click Add, and then add the SELF user.
  4. Under Permission entries, click SELF, and then click Edit.
  5. In the Permission Entry dialog box, click the Properties tab.
  6. On the Properties tab, click This object only in the Apply onto list, and then make sure that the following permissions are selected under Permissions:
    • Read servicePrincipalName
    • Write servicePrincipalName
  7. Click OK three times, and then close the ADSI Edit window.

For help with this process, contact Active Directory product support. Refer to this Microsoft Knowledge Base article if you contact product support.

When you perform this workaround, you eliminate SPN issues for new installations or installations that have had the TCP/IP port or domain name modified.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005.
