A Short List of Windows Remote Desktop Server Error Messages

Assumption and proposed solution:

Issue occurs when Windows 10 1809 clients connect to Server 2019. Windows 10 1803 or older are not having this problem. Here’s an item to test on the server.

There appears to be a threshold on Windows to limit the number of connections. Client OS would be 100, and server OS as 3000 by default. Here’s how to set this to a maximum value.

Event viewer messages:

Comment: this message appears to be expressing proper English. Although, I don’t know what to do with it.

Comment: I’m also unsure about any interpretation of the error above. Although, this correlates to a Windows 2019 Server with RDS role enabled. This machine is behind strict network zones (HIPPA). Clients often using Windows 10 to RDP-access this ‘bastion’ host.

A possible workaround is to change the display setting on the .rdp to a lower display resolution setting (e.g. 1280×1024). This happens when client machine’s resolution is 2560 x 1440 and the [virtual] video card in the host machine isn’t as capable. Another idea is to peruse the Windows 10 Remote Desktop UWP app.

Comment: pre-pending a username with DOMAINusername would work when encountering these errors.

Complain: Remote Desktop Session Does Not Show Login Prompt, and session would disconnect after 2 seconds…

Comment: Some Internet sources have alluded to CredSSP being the culprit. I have not yet tested setting CredSSP value to TRUE yet. On the same note, I’m guessing the issue would be more related to RemoteFX, rather than authentication. Will update this note once I gather more info.

Remote Desktop Gateway Connection Issues

I’ve got a remote desktop gateway setup on a Hyper-V machine for our network. Licensing is on the DC VM, Gateway/Web Access is on one VM, Connection Broker is a third VM and the Session Host is a final VM. I’m using Windows Server 2016 Datacenter in a AD setting.

I frequently have issues where when I try to use one of the remoteapps i’ll get the login prompts and then the window just disappears. On the offsite computer I’ll get a warning event:

Per the Server Manager, I’m not noticing any errors on the Connection Broker. In the Event Viewer under RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS I can see a connection was made via TCP, and then UDP, but then there’s the following error:

This is followed by a Disconnect Error 0, and then

The Session Host is just displaying the error:

This is follwed by Event 40 giving the disconnect reason code 12 which I’ve found to mean: «The user logged off, disconnecting the session.»

The gateway logs are showing that the Connection Authorization Policy requirements were met as were the Resource Authorization Policy requirements, a connection happened, lasted about 4 seconds and then disconnected.

I’ve tried making sure that group policy clearly states the licensing server, the connection broker, the security layer (SSL), the encyrption level (High).

what kind of deployment virtual desktop or session host?

I tried restarting the TermService on the Session Host, and instead of the login screen disappearing, I started getting a Black screen on login instead. I’ve seen the thread here:

And taken a look at our computers. The frequent remote computers I have access to via Teamviewer, so I’m now doublechecking their logins.

So, I’m not sure what’s happened in the last 8 hours. When I went to remote in from home tonight, it didn’t work. I got in a different way, and I can see that someone tried unsuccessfully to remote in as I left the office, and then nothing’s been able to bring this back up. I’ve restarted all the servers in the Remote Desktop configuration and no success (in the past, that has worked as a solution to fix the problem). I undid a lot of the GPO settings thinking that might help and that did not.

Right now for some unclear reason, from an on-prem machine/VM I can’t even RDP into the session host VM. And when I use my home computer to try to go through the gateway, I get an error message about not finding the connection broker on the network.

I’ll be revisiting it in the morning after more sleep.

Ok. I’m noticing that the RDP Session Host is not listening on Port 3389 and I’m trying to figure out why not. The Remote Desktop Services service is running, but the Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector service is not.

In the registry, it is still showing as Port Number 3389 under the RDP-Tcp section.

The firewall (Windows Firewall with Advanced Security) has both TCP and UDP port 3389 open.

There’s something weird going on with the printers, I don’t know if that would be related. It kept saying that the driver is unavailable for a networked printer, but then isn’t letting me delete or remove it. That printer installs via GPO and I’ve disabled the GPO, but no better success.

Still not working. I rolled out a second Session Host VM and a new collection and having the same problems there. To add the second session host, I had to disable all the Remote Desktop Services related GPOs, so those are still disabled. I’ve tried lowering the security settings. Still no success.

Any luck with solving this?

Windows 10 Pro, RDP Server, «An internal error has occurred»

I have a Windows 10 Pro machine that is functioning as a RDP terminal for a single user.

This machine was configured more than 2 years ago and has had no major changes made to its configuration, except of course for the obligatory Windows 10 automatic updates.

Everything has been working fine until a few months ago, when the user started getting this error when window attempting to connect via RDC:

Remote Desktop Connection
An internal error has occurred.

I tried logging in via RDC via my Admin credentials, and I get the same error. The error appears immediately after clicking connect. There is no processing time and the connection attempt seem to be immediately rejected by the server.

I can’t trace the problem down to any specific time, or event. It occurs seemingly at random. Sometimes after a few days, sometimes twice in one day.

Restarting the Windows 10 Pro machine always seems to fix the problem.

Strangely, accessing the Event Viewer on the Windows 10 Pro machine also seemed to fix the problem, but it almost always returns much more quickly if I use this «fix».

Speaking of the Event Viewer , these are relevant errors I found in the log related to RDC at the time that my login was rejected:

These are some other errors I noticed in the log, but don’t correspond to the moment I try to connect:

Note that the client machines are also running Windows 10 Pro.

Hello,

I have a small, newly set up network consisting of three Windows 10 Build 1607 desktops, all up to date, a 2016 Essentials server and a Windows 10 Build 1607 laptop and desktop on the other end of a OpenVPN tunnel. The remote laptop and desktop are successfully
joined to the domain and mapping drives no problem. I’ve been pushing GPOs out to all the machines and everything seems to work, up to the point where I enabled remote desktop and began to test with it. The OpenVPN tunnel should not be an issue, as the remote
desktop session to the Server 2016 Essentials machine from the remote machine is rock solid stable, even when the network is under heavy use. My problem lies with making and maintaining remote desktop sessions to each of the three Windows 10 machines in the
office from the remote Windows 10 machines. All three office machines exhibit the same issue.

Here is a scenario:

You are already pinging the remote machine you want to control with RDP, and you are getting responses back as expected. You can make a connection just fine, but whether using the session or leaving it idle, you can watch the pings going to the machine randomly
drop as if the NIC on the remote machine has been reset. The RDP session is interrupted, then a few seconds later reconnected. It has done this thousands of times during my troubleshooting session on all three office machines. You can see that the session
is not being starved for bandwidth. The first event in the RDPCoreTS logs that happens right at the time of the connection drop is almost always a slew «TCP socket WRITE operation failed, error 64.» and «TCP socket READ operation failed, error
64» followed by «The server has terminated main RDP connection with the client.» Then another error-level event comes up: «‘Failed CreateVirtualChannel call on this Connections Stack’ in CUMRDPConnection::CreateVirtualChannel at 2349 err=[0x80004005]»
followed by number disconnect events, and then: «Disconnect trace:CUMRDPConnection Disconnect trace:’calling spGfxPlugin->PreDisconnect()’ in CUMRDPConnection::PreDisconnect at 4477 err=[0x0], Error code:0x0.» The last event you see in this grouping
is: «The disconnect reason is 14.» Upon automatically reconnecting, you see: «The network characteristics detection function has been disabled because of Reason Code: 2(Server Configuration)..» Then the connection is restored,
only to drop in anything from a few seconds up to a few minutes later.

So, in recap (TL:DR):

RDP from the remote machines to the 2016 Essentials Server through the VPN tunnel:
Rock Solid Stable
RDP from the remote machines to the office machines through the VPN tunnel:
Constant drops and numerous logged events.

RDP from 2016 Essentials Server to office machines on LAN only:
Rock Solid Stable
RDP from the office machines to the remote machines through the VPN tunnel: Constant drops and numerous logged events.
ALL network traffic ceases to and from the host machine when the drop happens, including ICMP traffic (pings).
ALL of the Windows 10 machines can ping each other without issue and without any drops when not using RDP.

What this tells me is that the issue lies in some configuration issue either with a GPO setting or something inbuilt wrong with all of the Windows 10 1607 machines I have.

I have tried a variety of fixes, and have probably put 20 hours into researching a solution to this problem so I am prepared for this to be difficult to fix. My google powers have failed me.

Okay here goes what I have tried:

Disabling firewall on both ends of the connection:
no change.

Removing DHCP reservations: no change.
Adding every scope I could think of to the routing/firewall rules: no change.
Trying to move RSA crypto keys as suggested in another post: no change.
Changing the physical NIC in the office machines to a add-in PCI-e one: no change.
Re-installing all suspect machines: no change.

GPO settings I have tried both ON and OFF:
-Allow users to connect remotely by using Remote Desktop Services: Enabled
-Configure compression for RemoteFX data: Optimized to use less network bandwidth (tried balanced too)
-Require use of specific security layer for remote (RDP) connections: Enabled, SSL
-Require user authentication for remote connections by using Network Level Authentication: Enabled
-Set time limit for disconnected sessions: Enabled, Never
-Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions: Enabled, Never
-Set time limit for active Remote Desktop Services sessions: Enabled, Never
-Windows Firewall: Allow inbound file and printer sharing exception: Enabled
-Windows Firewall: Allow ICMP exceptions: Enabled, Allow inbound echo request
-Windows Firewall: Allow inbound Remote Desktop exceptions: Enabled, 10.0.20.0/24,10.0.25.0/24

I have also generated a Wireshark packet capture from both ends of the connection during the RDP drop, but I don’t want to share them publicly. I will share them with you privately if asked, though. I am not a professional packet inspector,
so I couldn’t gleam much from it. I can also provide a dump of the event log on the main PC I have been troubleshooting, if needed.

Any insight or suggestions you can give me would be very much appreciated. This issue is has really been trying my patience.

Thank you!

Hi All,

I’ve got a remote desktop gateway setup on a Hyper-V machine for our network. Licensing is on the DC VM, Gateway/Web Access is on one VM, Connection Broker is a third VM and the Session Host is a final VM. I’m using Windows Server 2016 Datacenter in a AD setting.

I frequently have issues where when I try to use one of the remoteapps i’ll get the login prompts and then the window just disappears.  On the offsite computer I’ll get a warning event:

Text

Event 1041, RemoteApp and Desktop Connections
Remote application (Remote Desktop Connection) is launched on RemoteApp and Desktop Connection (ConnectionBroker.Domain.org) but no stored credentials are used for single sign on. (Reason - RemoteApp and Desktop connection does not exist)

Per the Server Manager, I’m not noticing any errors on the Connection Broker. In the Event Viewer under RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS I can see a connection was made via TCP, and then UDP, but then there’s the following error:

Text

Event 227, RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS
'Failed to get property Disconnect Reason' in CUMRDPConnection::Close at 2212 err=[0x80070057]

This is followed by a Disconnect Error 0, and then

Text

Event 143
TCP socket WRITE operation failed, error 64

Text

Event 142
TCP Socket READ operation failed, error 64

Text

Event 226
RDP_TCP: An error was encountered when transitioning from StateUnknown in response to Event_Disconnect (error code 0x80070040).

The Session Host is just displaying the error:

Text

Event 36, Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager/Operational
An error occurred when transitioning from CsrConnected in response to EvCsrInitialized. (ErrorCode 0x80070057)

This is follwed by Event 40 giving the disconnect reason code 12 which I’ve found to mean:

«The user logged off, disconnecting the session.»

The gateway logs are showing that the Connection Authorization Policy requirements were met as were the Resource Authorization Policy requirements, a connection happened, lasted about 4 seconds and then disconnected.

 Any suggestions?

I’ve tried making sure that group policy clearly states the licensing server, the connection broker, the security layer (SSL), the encyrption level (High).

Assumption and proposed solution:

Issue occurs when Windows 10 1809 clients connect to Server 2019. Windows 10 1803 or older are not having this problem. Here’s an item to test on the server.

$tsServerClientRegKey="REGISTRY::HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftTerminal Server Client"
$keyName='UseURCP'
$value=0
Set-ItemProperty $tsServerClientRegKey -name $keyName -value $value

Log messages:

TCP socket READ operation failed, error 64
TCP socket WRITE operation failed, error 64

There appears to be a threshold on Windows to limit the number of connections. Client OS would be 100, and server OS as 3000 by default. Here’s how to set this to a maximum value.

$tsServerRegKey="REGISTRY::HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTerminal Server"
$keyName='MaxOutstandingConnections'
$value=65536
Set-ItemProperty $tsServerRegKey -name $keyName -value $value

Restoring operations failed (Result: 0x800708CA).

Comment: I’m also unsure about any interpretation of the error above. Although, this correlates to a Windows 2019 Server with RDS role enabled. This machine is behind strict network zones (HIPPA). Clients often using Windows 10 to RDP-access this ‘bastion’ host.

RDPClient_SSL: An error was encountered when transitioning from TsSslStateDisconnected to TsSslStateDisconnected in response to TsSslEventInvalidState (error code 0x8000FFFF).

Guidance:
This indicates a problem with the underlying network or transport, such as with TCP/IP, and not with SMB. A firewall that blocks TCP port 445, or TCP port 5445 when using an iWARP RDMA adapter, can also cause this issue.
The server name cannot be resolved.
Error: The object was not found.
Server name: server006.intranet.kimconnect.ad
Guidance:
The client cannot resolve the server address in DNS or WINS. This issue often manifests immediately after joining a computer to the domain, when the client's DNS registration may not yet have propagated to all DNS servers. You should also expect this event at system startup on a DNS server (such as a domain controller) that points to itself for the primary DNS. You should validate the DNS client settings on this computer using IPCONFIG /ALL and NSLOOKUP.

Update: issue seems to be related to the default MSTSC remote desktop client on Windows 10 machines. It’s a hit or miss workaround to configure MSTSC to reduce resolution and disable bitmap caching. Hence, a better hack is to use Microsoft’s newer RDP client here: https:// www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/microsoft-remote-desktop/9wzdncrfj3ps

Comment: This appears to be affecting Windows 2019 Servers. These machines have a scheduled task named ‘Automatic-Device-Join’ that facilitates ‘hybrid joins’. At the time of this writing, the environment of the affected machines are not hybrid. Here is some info from Microsoft: https:// docs.microsoft.com/en-US/troubleshoot/windows-server/deployment/event-307-and-304-logged-for-deploying

In some cases, when connecting to remote computers/RDS servers via Remote Desktop (RDP), users may encounter an “An internal error has occurred” error. This error may appear due to various reasons related to both the settings of the RDP/RDS server and the client (Windows settings, or settings in the Remote Desktop Connection window).

The error “An internal error has occurred” usually appears after user credentials are entered in the mstsc.exe window or immediately after clicking the Connect button.

rdp an internal error has occurred server 2016

Since there may be several causes for this RDP error, try to use the following tips one by one until you find a solution that will help you.

The easiest way to fix the problem is to reboot the remote RDP/RDS host and the computer from which you are establishing an RDP connection. If you cannot restart the server right now, you should try to restart the Remote Desktop Service (together with the Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector). You can do this with the following commands running in the elevated cmd.exe:

net stop termservice

net start termservice

Or you can restart Remote Desktop Services from the services.msc console.

rdp an internal error has occurred server 2019

Reset the DNS client cache on your computer by running the following command from an elevated command prompt:

ipconfig /flushdns

If you are using a VPN to connect to a remote network, try disabling the VPN connections and try reconnecting to the RDP host. You can find and disable all active native Windows VPN connections using PowerShell:

foreach ($item in get-vpnconnection | where { $_.ConnectionStatus -eq "Connected" })

{

Rasdial $item.Name /disconnect

}

If you are using third-party VPN software, disconnect VPN sessions from its interface.

Open the properties of your RDP connection in Remote Desktop Connection windows and make sure the ‘Reconnect if the connection is dropped‘ option is enabled on the Experience tab.

rdp an internal error has occurred

Try to disable the Server Authentication warning in the Advanced tab of the RDC client. Set the If server authentication fails to Connect and don’t warn me.

rdp an internal error has occurred server 2008

Check the Security Event Log for the following event ID 5379:

Credential Manager credentials were read.

This event occurs when a user performs a read operation on stored credentials in Credential Manager.

Your RDP client may have tried to use saved credentials for RDP connections. You need to remove it from Credential Manager:

  1. Open Windows Credentials in Control Panel (or by running the command: rundll32.exe keymgr.dll,KRShowKeyMgr);
  2. Delete the saved RDP logon credentials for your remote host. Find the entry that starts with TERMSRVyour_rdp_host_name or TERMSRVyour_rdp_IP_address and click the Remove button;
    rdp internal error

Next, try to recreate the RDP certificate:

  1. Open local computer certificates MMC snap-in, by running the certlm.msc command;
  2. Go to the following certificate section: Remote Desktop > Certificates;
  3. Right-click your self-signed certificate RDP cert and delete it (if there are several RDP certs, remove them all);
an internal error has occurred rdp
  4. Restart the Remote Desktop Services as described above.

You can try to change the maximum outstanding connections limit on your RDP server via the registry. Set the following registry value via regedit.exe:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTerminal Server

DWORD: MaxOutstandingConnections

VALUE: 10000

Or with PowerShell:

New-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:SYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTerminal Server"

-Name MaxOutstandingConnections -Value 10000 -PropertyType DWORD -Force

Check the current MTU size in your Windows with the command:

netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces

an internal error has occurred rdp windows server 2016

If the current MTU size for your network interface is equal to or more than 1500 (default Windows value), reduce it by using the command:

netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "vEthernet (vSwithcExternal)" mtu=1452 store=persistent

Try to change some Group Policy settings using the Local GPO editor (gpedit.msc) or domain Group Policy Management Console (gpmc.msc).

  1. Disable UDP protocol for RDP connection on client side: Computer configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Connection Client > Turn Off UDP on Client = Enabled;
    an internal error has occurred
  2. Enable FIPS compliant algorithms: Computer configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > System cryptography: Use FIPS compliant algorithms for encryption, hashing, and signing = Enabled;
remote desktop an internal error has occurred
  3. Disable the hardware encoding and enforced AVC:444 mode on the RDP server side: Computer configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Remote Session Environment > Prioritize H.264/AVC 444 Graphics mode for Remote Desktop Connection = Disabled;
an internal error has occurred rdp windows server 2019
  4. Try to adjust the RDP security level to RDP mode. Enable the policy ‘Require use of specific security layer for remote connections’ under the GPO section Computer configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Security and set the Security level to RDP (according to the article). Restart the remote host to apply this setting. windows server 2016 rdp an internal error has occurred

After changing the local Group Policy settings on a remote server, you need to apply them on the client and server using the gpupdate command.

If you are using NIC Teaming on your Windows Server host, make sure that the receive side scaling is disabled.

  1. Open the Device Manager console (devmgmt.msc);
  2. Expand the Network adapters and open the properties of the Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver;
  3. Go to the Advanced tab and set Receive Side Scaling to Disabled. remote desktop connection an internal error has occurred

When you use a smart card certificate to authenticate on the Remote Desktop server, you may encounter the following events in the RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreT log on the Windows Server 2019/2016 RDS host:

Warning Event 226, RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS

General: RDP_TCP: An error was encountered when transitioning from StateUnknown in response to Event_Disconnect (error code 0x80070040)

Warning Event 142, RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreT

General: TCP socket READ operation failed, error 64

Make sure your certificate has not been revoked.

Now check that your RDP client connects to the remote host without errors.
