I recently had to recover my laptop & had to reinstall Vista. (Long story. ) I’m trying to set it back up exactly as it was before. Only one step remaining: I’d like to rename the computer & the workgroup to what it was before. It won’t let me change either the computer name or the workgroup name.
I get the message: «The following error occurred validating the name xxxxx. A general network error occurred.»
I’m running Windows Vista Home Premium, 64 bit. I get this message, when under Control Panel | System, under «Computer Name Domain and Workgroup Settings», I click on Change Settings, then Change, then type in a new name. (In this case, the fairly unimaginative ‘Familyupstairs’ as the computer name.)
I’m sure I’m forgetting a simple step somewhere in setting up the home network.
BTW: The other computer on the home network is visible, though in a different workgroup. Problem is, I backup my primary system onto this laptop, and with the names different, I’d have to reconfigure everything. It would be simpler if I could just rename it back to what it was.

Question
This is a clean install of Vista on a Gateway notebook, using the OS CD supplied by Gateway.
System is a Intel Core 2 Dou 1.83 CPU with 4GB of RAM.
320GB harddrive, the C Drive is about 75GB after repartitioning it.
The install of Vista went smoothly and I have updated everything via Windows Update.
My problem is that I can not change the name of the network workgroup from «WORKGROUP» to «HOME».
When I get in there to do it it lets me make the change, but when I click OK to save it I get the following error.
«The following error occurred validating the name «STEVE-LAPTOP».
A general network error occurred.»
I tried doing it in safe mode and it is greyed out there I can’t even type in a new name.

The netbios.sys from 32bit system is not applied to 64bit Windows Vista system. We need a netbios.sys file from a Windows Vista 64bit SP1 system. If any of your friends can help us, we could easily copy files. By default there would not be any Activation issues. However, if the system needs to be Activated, we can use phone Activation if auto-Activation does not work.
This behavior occurs if certain network drivers, such as netbios.sys is not accessible or corrupt. I suggest that you disable or uninstall the anti-virus temporary, and disable firewall software. Then try to change the workgroup again.
If the issue persists, one of the network driver files may be corrupt. In our database I found a similar case that occurred on a Gateway computer either. Please launch Event Log, check the System log and find which file the error is related to.
After you find related information and confirm which file causes this issue, please find another Windows Vista SP1 system (not from Gateway), copy the same file and replace the file on the problematic computer manually.
Please note that we need to take the ownership of the folder before you replace the file on the problematic computer.
1.In the «Start» menu, locate «Command Prompt». Right-click and choose «Run as Administrator». If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. Type the following commands, then press «Enter» to execute them one by one. Please note the space before the command and its parameter.

What happens if you try changing the WG name to something else, i.e. not WORKGROUP and not NICHOLS? Does it give you the same error?

Yes it does. I tried to change it to several different names and got the same issue. I tried HOME and NETWORK and BLACK and GROUP and ghot the same result every time. It makes no sense to me.

UNABLE TO CHANGE Computer name on WIndows 10 Pro
Hello, I am trying to change the computer name.
I tried to do it from the control panel -> System-> System Protection -> System Properties -> Computer Name/Domain Changes.
But when I try to change the name aI get the following error:
The following error occurred validating the name «DESKTOP-JAF».
A general network error occurred.
This kind of error does not give too many hints on what is going on right?
Does anyone have any idea of what is happening?
Cheers,

All computers on the internal network should have a primary DNS set to the
internal DNS server. This is the primary AD server. There should be no
references to any external DNS server except if you want to put a forwarder
in your DNS server settings, NOT in your server TCP/IP network settings.
You can tell what each has by issuing: ipconfig /all
….at a command prompt.
Ex.
c:/>ipconfig /all
