I’m having the hardest time getting MCM to work. I’ve actually had it work twice before but for some reason it starts working then.

Here’s what comes up when I hit escape and go to the menu:

‘The mod configuration menu cannot access its menu files. Ether the files are missing, an error has occurred with the nvse plugin, or a firewall/uac is preventing access.

You may need to reinstall the mod, update your 32-bit visual c++ 2010 redistributale package, or change your firewall/uac settings.’

I have no anti-virus on my computer whatsoever other than the standard windows thing, but just in case I tried turning off windows anti-virus AND both my firewalls. Still no change.

Here is my load order BTW. Have spent hours googling and trying to find answers, can anyone help? I’ve tried checking and unchecking the archive invalidation thing.

Hi, I have been modding Fallout 4 using Mod Organizer 2 and have noticed the following problem.

$MOD_CONFIG in the main menu and $MCM_SETTINGS so i cannot tweak my mods.

Below is a link to someone else pictures who has this exact problem but was only told it was because FO4 was not set to load loose files and no actual fix.

I have added the following lines to my Fallout4Custom.ini file as linked here: http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/Fallout_4_Mod_Installation

[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=

Upon loading the game, the result is the same however, $MOD_CONFIG etc as shown above.

I have no other problems with MO2 or FO4 and all my other mods seem to work no problem other than being unable to change settings in the MCM because of the above problem.

Also I am using a 360 controller with no issues other than it now acts glitchy in the menu skipping every other line rendering some menu options inaccessible.

Can anyone help me with this please, i have exhausted my Google skills and can find nothing further helpful, i just want to get back to Fallout 4 and be actually able to change mods settings!

Thank you for your time.

Read both pages, translation file missing and something about enabling loose files. There is a link to a video by Gopher how to fix it on the last page. I have not had the problem myself so I do not know what is in the video. Last post is from 10/29/2019, Hope it helps.

Hey, thank you both for your replies.
I can confirm i am using the latest F4SE 0.6.17 and the latest MCM 1.37.
I am having a good read of the linked forum thread, how on earth i missed that after all my searching i don’t know but i am hopeful there is something in there to help me!

EDIT: I have already done everything Gopher mentions in his video so the loose files should be enabled right? I found out that i do NOT have an Interface folder in Fallout4Data, so i guess that is the problem right there?

If it matters i am also NOT using DEF_UI:

I installed MCM to use with Project Reality and it worked fine. I then installed Unified HUD Project to use with a HUD mod and it’s made changes to some .xml files which has now broken MCM. Uninstalling the HUD mods hasn’t fixed it, neither has reinstalling MCM. When I go to the pause menu I get the error:

«The Mod Configuration Menu cannot access its menu files. Either the files are missing, or a firewall/UAC is preventing access. You may need to reinstall the mod, update your 32-bit Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package, or change your firewall/UAC settings.»

It’s not the firewall, and it’s not C++. From what I can tell it’s something in an .xml file that’s ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up but I can’t figure it out. My only hope at this point would be to reinstall the entire game! Help

Unified HUD Project is outdated. We now use an NVSE plugin called UIO for UI mod compatibility.

When installing UI mods, follow this install order:
1. DarNified/MTUI
2. Project Nevada
3. MCM
4. Other UI mods.
5. One HUD

UIO can be installed whenever.

Make sure that archive invalidation is applied when you’re done.

You might want to wipe the menus folder in your data folder and install your UI mods from scratch following the above suggestions.

Deleting the menu folder didn’t work. Out of frustration I have uninstalled all mods and the game, reinstalled the game and have so far only added an ENB, Project Reality, DarNUI and still MCM won’t work! I get the same error message, how is that even possible? And now in another attempt to fix it the game ctd’s on startup.

I really don’t understand what has happened. I had the game working just fine with a lot of other mods installed until I installed that stupid Unified HUD Project and now it’s ♥♥♥♥♥♥ the whole thing up. It shouldn’t even be on the Nexus if it causes issues like this.

Like I said, it’s outdated and it says so in the description. It was left up mainly for those running already working installaitons, but it’s a while back now and there’s no reason to not use UIO instead.

When you uninstalled the game did you also remove everything from the installation folder? Steam only removes files that it put there itself, so you may have left over files added by mods. If not, try it again and make sure to delete everything. Also delete any files left in your documents for good measure.

Did you make sure to follow the steps I provided above when you installed your mods? MCM —must— be installed after Project Nevada (which is what I assume you mean by Project Reality,) and DarNUI should always be installed first. Also double check your archive invalidation.

There’s two mod-related things that can crash the game at startup, borked menu files or a load order issue, usually missing master file. You can troubleshoot the first by disabling archive invalidation, which will make the game ignore the modded assets. If that fixes it, wipe your UI mods and try again. You can troubleshoot the second by loading your plugins with FNVEdit, which simulates how they’re loaded by the game and will throw an error if a file is missing.

It’s possible it’s ArchiveInvalidation actually. This is my first time modding NV — when I modded FO3 I used NMM to manage it and the auto-archiveinvalide worked. I think NV is more tricky because of the way Steam makes certain .ini files read-only and will overwrite changed ones, I don’t think the archiveinvalidate works correctly in NMM because it doesn’t have the right permissions. So I need to change Fallout_default.ini which is the main file and not read-only.

I’m also uninstalling the game again and will delete every last trace of the game. I didn’t delete my test save files but I’ll literally start from scratch this time.

its old but maybe someone needs help with this. if you have this problem «The Mod Configuration Menu cannot access its menu files. » or the MCM «has detected multiple..etc» this might help you .
you need FOMM and NMM

1- uninstall MCM-Unified HUD- I HUD- UIO (any HUD mod that you have installed) also uninstall Project Nevada (if you have P.Nevada installed and any compatibilty patch for PN)

2-now open NMM (nexus mod manager) (if you dont have NMM download it)

3- deatctivate archive invalidation via NMM (tools-uncheck archive inavalidation)

4-open FOMM and install Project Nevada and any compatibilty patch for PN via FOMM

5- Open again or maximize NMM and install IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER:

first: MCM
then: MCM BugFix 2 (if you dont have it download it from nexus MCM web page)
then: I-HUD (be sure to install I-HUD version 3_4. The nexus authors web page says its no longer supported but dont mind that, download it and install it)
last: Unified HUD

6- reactivate archive invalidation via NMM (tools- check archive invalidation)

7- Fixed ! open Fallout New vegas and play

I’m getting the following error in the game’s pause menu:

The Mod Configuration Menu cannot access its menu files. Either the files are missing, or a firewall/UAC is preventing access.
You may need to reinstall the mod, update your 32-bit Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package, or change your firewall/UAC settings.

MCM was working fine before but ever since I installed Unified HUD Project to use with HUD Extended I think UHP has modified and/or deleted .xml files that are necessary for MCM. I’ve since uninstalled the HUD mods and reinstalled MCM but it still won’t work. I’ve been all over these forums and while I’ve followed the suggestions of previous posts I’m still not having any luck. It’s not the firewall or C++. Some of the .xml files (like instance_StartMenu.xml) that are referenced in old posts, I don’t have! Perhaps because the HUD mods deleted them? I don’t know, but it’s all a bit of a mess now and I don’t know what else to do other than to reinstall the entire game. Help!

Go to where you have Fallout installed. Right click in the folder. Go to Properties. Then make sure Read-only is clear. Apply, then Ok. Then go to the FallouNV.exe, and right click on that. I’ve tried turning off read-only but the problem with that is that it gets reset by Steam. Or, in other words, the Steam directory itself is read-only and so therefore will overwrite anything you try to do with permissions inside it. Steam is partly to blame here. I’m not sure if I have turned off UAC in Win8.1 so I will have to look into that next.

Okay I’ve actually narrowed it down now to DarnifiedUI which also uses the start_menu.xml file found in data/menus/options. If Darn overwrites that .xml then MCM won’t work and will give the error about missing files etc. Without overwriting the MCM version of that .xml I still get an error, but it’s one I can live with — now when I pause, the game tells me that DarnUI can’t be found in the start menu and that it can’t be used by MCM, which is fine. I don’t know how I managed to get the two to be working without any conflict before, but this is as close to fixed as I’ve come in 2 days and I might just put up with it. At least they work.

fallout new vegas mod configuration menu error
fallout new vegas mod configuration menu error

The player reviews for this game are extremely positive and despite the outdated graphics, players still love to play this game. If you can’t compromise on graphics then you should try using mods to pump up the graphics in your game. You can even use the Project Nevada mod to make the game more interesting. So, even though it is a very old game, it can still be a lot of fun with the help of mods.

A lot of players have been complaining about the mod configuration menu recently. As soon as they try to load the configuration menu, an error pops up and the mod won’t work. If you’re having similar problems then try these steps.

    1. Install HUD

There are a few things that need to be installed along with the configuration menu. You can download the immersive and the one HUD from the Nexus page. Even though you don’t need both of these HUDs, they still improve the overall configuration options in your game.

After downloading both of these HUDs from the Nexus page, you can go to the launcher and switch to the activated mods tab from the left column. Now, from the User interfaces tab, you will have to install the mod configuration menu again. Similarly, you will have to install the immersive and One HUD from the same tab.

After installing the mods mentioned above, you can just access the tools from the top column and apply archive invalidation. That should fix your error in-game and you will be able to use the interface in your game.

A few users also said that they had to install the Unified HUD to fix the mod configuration menu error. So, if you’re running into issues after installing both of these HUDs mentioned above then you should switch to the Unified HUD to see if that works for your Fallout New Vegas.

    1. Update Visual Package

Many players were able to fix this issue by going to the Microsoft store and updating the C++ Visuals on their OS. Along with updating the visual package, you will need to check the compatibility options on the mod manager.

You will have to double-check that the admin permissions are enabled for your mod manager. To check the compatibility settings, you can right-click on the mod manager executable file and then go to properties. After enabling the admin permissions, you need to launch the game again to see if your mod configuration menu is working.

It is also possible that one of your other mods is causing issues for your game. To isolate the error, we suggest that you remove all the additional mods from your PC except the HUDs and then try installing project Nevada only.

After installing the Nevada mod, you can launch the game again to see if the mod configuration menu is showing up in your game. Also, make sure that you have installed the mod configuration menu on your PC and not the “MCM Bugfix” file on your PC. To be sure you can make a thread on Nexus forums and ask other players about MCM.

    1. Reinstall Mod

If you’re still getting the same error in the mod configuration menu then you should try reinstalling the mod on your PC. Make sure to remove everything, including the extra mods and the HUDs from your PC.

Then you can restart your system and download these mods again from the Nexus page. It won’t take you that long to reinstall unless you have a lot of mods installed in your game. After reinstalling the mods and the HUD you can launch the game again to see if your mod configuration menu is giving you the same error.

The majority of players were able to get around this issue by giving admin privileges to their mod manager and installing HUDs from the Nexus page. So, it is likely that the same methods will work out for you too unless there is something wrong with your PC configurations.

You should also look at the firewall settings on your PC and disable any antivirus programs that you’ve installed recently. Hopefully, that will get your mod configuration menu working again but if you’re still in the same issue then we suggest that you switch to FOMM.

I had to reinstall FNV/TTW and F3 because the latest versions af NMM aren’t backward compatible, which is highly annoying in itself IMO. Anyway, the installation of the games and of TTW went well. I’ve started a new game and everything seems to be working as it should.

But I can’t get the Mod Configuration Menu (MCM) to work. When installing it and loading a save, I first get a message that it is installed, but when hitting Esc going to the menu, I get this message:

ERROR: The Mod Configuration Menu cannot access its menu files. Either the files are missing, an error has occurred with the NVSE plugin, or a firewall/UAC is preventing access.   You may need to reinstall the mod, update your 32-bit Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package, or change your firewall/UAC setting.

It’s the first time I’ve had this issue. As for the suspected culprits the message lists:

Files aren’t missing. I’ve checked and all files from the package are installed correctly.

It shouldn’t be an error with NVSE. I’ve tried with both 5.02b and 5.02c and the same issue. NVSE seems to be working — it returns Version 5 when checking NVSE version with the console.

It shouldn’t be a firewall issue as I get the same issue even if turning off the firewall.

It shouldn’t be an UAC issue as I have the game installed outside program files, plus I’ve never had any such issues with my game installs as all are installed outside program files.

OK, what have I tried so far:

Making sure I’m using the latest MCM. I am using MCM 1.5 and the MCM BugFix 2 esp.

Reinstalling it several times. Using NMM, using FOMM. Same issue.

Fiddling with archive invalidation, which shouldn’t be it anyway I guess, but I have ai working as it should (at least so far).

Trying different load orders. Not so much I can do there ATM as I only have TTW installed, but I’ve tried loading MCM last and earlier but same issue.

I read somewhere that MCM might not work if you don’t have a mod that uses it, which I doubt btw, but I’ve tried using it with DarN’s UI because of that and the same issue. Switching their load orders as well — same issue.

RoyBatty tried to help me out in the chat and he thought it sounds like a permission issue. I’ve tried running the loaders as administrator, but same issue (I’m using fnv4gb.exe, but same issue if using nvse_loader.exe).

He also recommended trying out the Take Ownership «app», but I get the same issue after using it to take ownership of the entire FNV folder.

I’ve also googled, but haven’t found a solution that way either. In short, I’m pretty much stumped and have no idea how to solve it.

    I’m testing with Fallout 4.
    I’m using the MO2 2.1 build from 2017-11-10.
I also use the updated python boost dll and the usvfs dlls that were posted to #testers on Discord on 2017-11-11.
System is Windows 10 (Build 16299).

The starting point is both the current Mod Configuration Menu as well as the MCM Demo plugin installed — each as separate Mod in the MO2 list and both activated and no files removed from them in any of the following cases.

Furthermore, the overwrite directory is empty (i. e. contains no MCMConfig directory or the like).

Basically one of 3 observations arise, depending on what I put into the real Data folder of Fallout 4:

    • [A] No entry for «Mod Config» at all appears in the pause menu.
    • [B] The entry for «Mod Config» does appear in the pause menu, but the MCM menu lists no entries at all, not even «MCM Settings» or «Hotkey Manager» that both come with MCM.
    • [C] The entry in the pause menu exists and the MCM menu lists all expected entries: «MCM Settings», «Hotkey Manager» and the plugin’s «MCM Demo».

I also had a fourth case during testing related to the Settings directory that mixed it all up, where all except the plugin’s entry appeared, but I cannot reproduce that. I’m not sure whether I did something wrong or there’s some kind of mandelbug in the mix.

    Outcome A A A A B B B B B B B B B B B B C C C

What that means is the existence of directory DataMCM doesn’t help at all.
However, the existence of directory DataMCMConfig makes at least the MCM Config appear in the pause menu, albeit with an empty list in its own menu.
Only the config.json of the MCM plugins under DataMCMConfigPlugin_Nameconfig.json makes everything appear as desired.

Modulo the case with only the built-in entries being available which I wasn’t able to reproduce.
