The parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following error

On Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit. I have the following error :

On Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit. I have the following error :

«The EPSON TM Parallel Port Driver service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.»

I did experiment with this printer and install drivers and application. All of them are already removed. So it is a puzzle why I am seeing this error log.

I do a search in registry and do found this registry entry

———-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001servicesEPSON TM Parallel Port Driver

Display Name : EPSON TM Parallel Port Driver

ImagePath : ??C:windowssystem32driverstmlpt.sys

———-

The file pointed by ImagePath is not there. Making me think that this is the cause. However I still need more information to understand the basis and solution to this problem.

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware (More info?)

I recently disabled the parallel port in the BIOS (I wasn’t using it
anyway) to try and free up an IRQ or some system resources, when I installed
a firewire controller (which I wanted to have its own IRQ if possible).
Then I periodically started getting this error «The Parallel port driver
service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.» I Googled this, but any info I
found either was not applicable or was in incomprehensible techspeak. I
couldn’t figure out how to prevent the error from occurring, so for the time
being I re-enabled the parallel port in the BIOS—disabling it didn’t free
up any IRQ’s anyway. I would like to know more about this, however. Is
there a proper way to go about disabling the parallel port so that this
error does not occur?
Should it be done before installing Windows? What are the advantages and
disadvantages of disabling the parallel port, other than freeing up IRQ’s
(as I said, it didn’t—unless this also happens only upon Windows install?).
Gurus, please respond!

Phoenix,
I haven’t found any other way to fix this problem except through the
registry. So go run regedit and find the HKLMSystemCurrent Control
SetServicesParPort branch, set it’s startup type to 4. Mine was 3 before
and when I disabled the BIOS it caused the same messages as you had.
This disables the driver/device so give it a shot although no reason why it
will or will not work.
As for disadvantages of enabling/disabling parallel port. Not too much. I do
it to minimize devices that could bring down a system so you don’t have all
these things that you could plug into, especially when you don’t need the
darn things.

Hi there,
If anyone could help me get XP Pro logging in/out faster I would really
appreciate it. I fixed the mrRate 7000 error already and would like to fix
this one as it is the only error in my event viewer. After this I hope XP
will log us in/out faster.
Thanks,
ed

Do you have the parallel port disbaled in the BIOS?
Presuming that you do, or you don’t otherwise need the
parallel port,
enter device manager, click view/show hidden
non-plug and play devices.
Right click parallel port driver/properties
Select driver tab and set startup type to disabled.

Yes, I had it to.
That’s how I found out how to alleviate the situation.
As you say, doesn’t really affect logon times.

:

No. It should actually say «parallel port driver»

If it’s not there, here’s a couple of things to check:
Open a CMD box and type
Net start parport (press enter)

What does it say? Does the entry appear in non plug
and play devices now?

If still no good, check this registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumRootLEGACY_PARPORT

Does it exist?

The Parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following error:

The fix is simple:
1. Open Regedit and go to
HKLMSystem|CurrentControlSetServicesParport
2. Edit the Start key and change the value to 4. Changing the value to 4 will «disable» the service.
3. Reboot the computer
