  • I have a problem in one Windows Server 2012, where RDMS simply doesnt start, even manually.

This is a secundary server, who dont have a AD controller, it uses a remote one from a primary server.

I tried to remove and install RDMS, removing and creating a new internal DB, but this problem continues.

    From,

    • Remote Desktop Connection Broker
    • Remote Desktop Management
    • RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Management

    Only RDM is disable.

When I try to start it manually I got this message:

    Anyone?

Question

We are trying to install remote desktop services and the configuration failed at RD connection broker step, the event viewer had this error message.

«the remote desktop management service failed to start 0x88250001»

We are setting this up on a member server with win 2012 R2.

Does the server hold AD DS role? If yes it’s not supported, check this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-my/help/2799605/remote-desktop-services-role-cannot-co-exist-with-ad-ds-role-on-window

The server is just a member server, does NOT hold AD DS services.

Have you tried moving the server into an OU with no GPOs, run gpupdate /force on the server in admin command prompt, and then test again? The idea is you want to install with default policies, local security settings, etc., to eliminate potential issues.

Please try to re-start the system and check the result. If problem persists, please open Services, find Remote Desktop Management service and try to manually re-start it to check the result.

If problem persists, please provide more information about your RDS installation/deployment:
1. Which server role has been installed on this member server?
2. Which RDS role are you trying to install?

I think I wrecked Remote Desktop services by trying to install AD on the server

We have two servers here. a 2008r2 domain controller, and a 2012r2 file/print/rds server.

I installed AD onto the 2012r2 server in the hopes that it could work as a backup dc, not realizing that doing so would kill Remote Desktop services.

So I removed AD from the 2012r2 in the hopes that would bring back RDMS, but it doesn’t. Every time I try to start the service it says «The Remote Desktop Management service failed to start. Error code: 0x88250001»

Did installing the AD role change something that did not get reverted when I removed the role? Is there a way to get this server to accept RDP connections again?

As an aside, I am also getting this error message. «RD Connection Broker service denied the remote procedure call (RPC) from an unauthorized computer ::1.» Ugh.

Thanks for the head’s up. It makes me want to reinstalled Remote Desktop, I’ll see if I can get anywhere with that. . I agree about users on the DC. I don’t want users on any of our servers, but the previous IT setup had everyone using RDP to the file server. I’ve been moving people away from it and, honestly, I’d rather leave it broken, but a couple of users (including the boss) still primarily use RDP.

I am not sure how well that will work. The permissions are already changed you will probably have to manually change them back.

It may be worth a shot. RDS isn’t too hard to re-roll

Yeah, regular users signing on to a domain controller is bad.

Microsoft did a lot to prevent RDS on DCs.

Installing AD changes a bunch of permissions.

You may have a look here on how to fix it.

Is there a source for info on which permissions would be the ones involved?

Shows what I get for not investigating first. Yes, this install attempt of AD on a RDS server irrevocably seems to have wrecked RDS. And It turns out that my attempt to restore the computer to a pre-fussing phase with my bare metal backup (cloudberry) did not work as I couldn’t convince cloudberry software to actually do the restore.

So, well, I took this as a chance to just force everyone off of Remote Desktop forever! And to look for a different backup solution.

Question

Dear colleges, I’m seeking your help in resolving a weird issue with Remote Desktop.

The Remote Desktop Management service gives the following error message any time it is attempted to start:

«The Remote Management Service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.»

The Event Viewer error message is as follows:

«The Remote Desktop Management service failed to start. Error code: 0x88250001»

Whenever I connect to the server with RD I get error message that the Remote Desktop Licensing Server isn’t configured and that the RD trill will expire in N-days. The server is up to date updates wise and has been licensed for 5 RD CALs. The server hosts DNS server and has AD DS role installed, is virtualized to have one Hyper-V server.

I read some blogs about having both DNS and AD DS on one box is a bad sea and a root cause of the issue. Well, that very well may be, but for me that’s an option as I’m not going to get a box to just host DNS. There should a solution to this as I shouldn’t only one suffering from this issue.

I also read about KB2871777 — Servicing stack update supposedly addressign this issue. Well, it’s on my system and the issue is there too. 🙂

Will I loose ability to RD when the trial expires or it’s just another misleading MS message that can be ignored?

How do I mend Remote Desktop Management service to start?
