[SOLVED] Problem connecting to OPENVPN

The problem is that unfortunately it gives this error!
Of course, I can say that I can not even connect to the ProtonVPN site from the browser, and with the SetupVPN of the Chrome browser, I connected to the ProtonVPN site !! Isn’t this a problem ??
The problem is that unfortunately when Chrome browser VPN Setup is open, it gives this error, but when I close the browser VPN Setup, it does not give the last two lines and after a few minutes nothing happens.

It’s possible that ProtonVPN is blocked in your region?
Are you aware if VPNs are illegal where you are?

IIRC some countries have declared them illegal and blocking access with firewalls.
If that’s not the case then idk, I don’t have any VPN yet.

On another perspective, have you configured a firewall?

[BUG] There was an error connecting to the ProtonVPN API. #128

Describe the bug
After repeat successful init and connect there is a recurrent issue with connecting again.

The error message [!] «There was an error connecting to the ProtonVPN API.» [!] Please make sure your connection is working properly!

Led me to query the API manually, most likely igoring requirements to reliably connect but it shows here there may be an issue with the API connectivity (or i miss the requirements to be met)

Inconsistent behavior of TLS certificate for Fedora 36 repository domain #88

  • I have searched open and closed issues for duplicates
  • This isn’t a feature request
  • This is not a report about my app not working as expected

There is no consistent SSL/TLS certificate behavior when requesting the repository metadata file at https://repo.protonvpn.com/fedora-36-stable/repodata/repomd.xml.

After execute dnf upgrade —refresh the repository metadata update fails with the following output:

This is not a persistent issue. For example, if I connect to Japan (using other VPN service) the route resolves using a valid TLS certificate issued by Let’s Encrypt. On the other side, if I use a «raw» connection the route is resolved providing a TLS certificate issued by «Untangle», which is not recognized as a valid certificate.

What can I do to resolve this? Is this a DNS cache-related issue or a domain misconfiguration by your side?

  • OS: Fedora 36 Workstation KDE Spin
  • 9.9.9.9 and 1.1.1.1 as DNS servers for raw connections.
  • 103.86.96.100 and 103.86.99.100 as DNS servers for secured connections.
  • Installation provided by the RPM located at https://repo.protonvpn.com/fedora-36-stable/release-packages/protonvpn-stable-release-1.0.1-1.noarch.rpm (as described in https://protonvpn.com/support/official-linux-vpn-fedora/)

Unable to connect

In cases Proton VPN can’t connect, please refer to the following list of solutions. Most of the steps described here can be done without direct support from our support team, but in case you get stuck or don’t know how to handle certain things, we will be there for you.

Server downtimes

If you have connection problems with a single server or country, it’s quite likely a temporary problem or downtime, e.g. for maintenance. We work to ensure maximum server uptime. However once in a while a server may still go down unexpectedly. If the problem persists on all servers, please also check your firewall/ antivirus settings.

System and compatibility issues

Installation

  • Make sure Proton VPN is properly installed and that you have granted permission to install the OpenVPN TAP adapter. For detailed instructions on how to install Proton VPN please visit this article.

System time

  • If your system time is not set correctly, you might be unable to log into Proton VPN. If your system time is, for example, set to April, 1st, 2005, an SSL certificate from 2007 will be rejected and the connection will fail.

Reinstall Proton VPN

  • Sometimes an operating system takes a wrong turn and slows down a program. please uninstall Proton VPN completely and re-install it. The following links have detailed instructions on how to uninstall and install Proton VPN.

Expired account

Yes, VPN is limited in our area
But I need VPN for my work for Telegram and YouTube
Unfortunately, in our region, they limit it like this!
An educational site should say:
sudo vim /usr/local/lib/python3.x/dist-packages/protonvpn_cli/utils.py
Found this:

Then change to this:

I found the file and replaced it, but it still didn’t work !!
What do you think I should do? I am tired of this restriction that is in our area. There was a lot of program in Windows so that we can overcome this restriction, but I do not know Linux, how can it be connected to a VPN for free !?

Depends on goal, do you want to skip firewall? Or privacy?

I recommend a non-blocked VPN, but that is difficult.
Worse if VPNs are illegal where you are. (You have not said they are, but I assume they are indeed not wanted by the ones that block them)
I can’t account for one that will work for you.

I really do not know the firewall and what you say …
I just want to be able to connect to Telegram and YouTube, which are filtered in our country, and connect.

Сохраните и попробуйте еще раз. Если вы что-то сломали, вы можете просто удалить и переустановить protonvpn-cli через pip, который должен все восстановить :)

api_domain = get_config_value("USER", "api_domain").rstrip("/")

Извините за некробампинг, но это, похоже, не имело удовлетворительного решения.
Итак, в дополнение к этому я также изменил _cli.py_, который также сохраняет ссылку на домен protonvpn, в моем случае заблокированный Fortinet в месте расположения Starbucks.
Пришлось сделать это, потому что при запуске задачи _init_ он захватывает домен из локальной переменной, определенной в методе _init_cli_
