Do you see this error message when you start Firefox?
The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox’s files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem.
This error happens when a database file that stores bookmarks and browsing history (places.sqlite) and related site icons (favicons.sqlite) can’t be accessed by Firefox. This article covers possible solutions.
If you don’t see the error above, try one of these articles instead:

Solution 1: Restart your computer
The most common causes of this error are another program using the file or a problem with the file that was caused when the computer was shut off unexpectedly (like a power failure). The good news is that most of the time, simply restarting your computer and then restarting Firefox is the fix for both problems.
Solution 2: Create a new database
If restarting your computer doesn’t take care of things, you can fix this by having Firefox create a new places and favicon database for you. Don’t worry, it’s not as hard as it sounds.
Part 1 – Open your profile folder
- Click the menu button , click and select .From the menu, select . The Troubleshooting Information tab will open.
- Under the Application Basics section next to Profile FolderDirectory, click Open FolderShow in FinderOpen Directory. A window will open that contains your profile folder.Your profile folder will open.
Leave the Profile folder open – go on to Part 2.
Part 2 – Create a new database
- (Optional) Create a bookmark backup file.
- Click the Firefox menu and select .Click the Firefox menu at the top of the screen and select .Click the Firefox menu and select .
Wait until Firefox has completely quit. - In the Firefox profile folder find and delete (or rename) the favicons.sqlite and places.sqlite files.
- You can rename instead of deleting a file to keep it as a backup. Right-click it and select Rename from the context menuClick it once to select and click a second time the file name to make it editable, then add .old to the end of its name.
- Also delete the favicons.sqlite-shm, favicons.sqlite-wal, places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal files, if they exist.
- Finally, reopen Firefox.
- When Firefox reopens, it will create new favicons.sqlite and places.sqlite database files. Your browsing history will be lost, but Firefox will automatically restore your bookmarks from the most recent bookmarkbackups file.
- If your bookmarks weren’t restored, try the steps in the Recover lost or missing Bookmarks article.
Help! This didn’t fix the problem
If the above solutions didn’t work, you may be able to resolve the problem with a new Firefox profile. You can use these instructions to create a new Firefox profile and set it as the default profile. When you restart Firefox, it will open with the new profile and, hopefully, you will no longer see the error message. You can then copy important data to the new profile and, if necessary, restore bookmarks from a backup file, if you have one.

Topic: Tor bookmarks being blocked by Avast (Read 5616 times)

I turned on the Tor browser this morning and noticed my bookmarks had disappeared. There was this message at the top of the browser;
The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Tor Browser’s files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem.
Looking online someone had previous issues with avast in this situation and discovered it was indeed avast blocking it. So I turned off all shields to avast and reloaded tor and all the bookmarks reappeared.
I then re-enabled all shields and the error message re-appeared and the bookmarks vanished.
I’m using;
Tor Browser 9.5.4
Avast Application (Ver. 20.6.2420 — Build 20.6.5495.588)
Virus update (Ver. 200827-2)
Update: It’s back working now.

Well it’s back doing this again.
I recently updated the Avast application.
Avast application: ver. 20.8.2432 — build 20.8.5684.602
Virus definitions: ver. 201018-2
I suspect its something in the updates that keep causing this. Also the mini updates too.
So far since updating to application its stopping tor browser working properly.
Does anyone know why it keeps doing this?

It’s the free version of Avast.
64bit, Professional. 2004 Version (OS Build 19041.572)
The only other software I use similar is the free version of Malwarebytes.
But this is definately an Avast problem because if I disable the shields Tor’s bookmarks load up correctly.
Sometimes when I have avast running it’ll cause the bookmarks problem, and then later on it’ll work perfectly again.
This only happens with the Tor browser. It doesn’t effect my other web browsers.

Hmm, I can’t find that page on my free version.
I’ve noticed since I updated the program it’s blocking the tor bookmarks all the time. In the previous program it seemed to change between blocking and not blocking.

Thanks guy, I found it.
Today I thought the issue fixed itself as Avast and Tor played nicely.
Then I noticed there was a Tor browser update, so I selected it and it restarted the browser and now its back to the bookmark problem again. This new tor browser version is 10.0.2

This still seems to be an on-going issue.
I report the bug and it gets fixed. But when I update Tor the exact same problem happens again.
When Tor bookmarks are being blocked by Avast the only way to fix it is to disable the Avast shields, load up Tor, then re-enable the shields.

Thanks mate.
I was on my way back to the thread as it still randomly blocks the bookmarks.
I just did as you said and it seems to have worked.
It seems that for whatever reason Avast keep adding, then removing it from the ransomware shield.
Thank you for your work in tracking down what the issue is.

Пропала история, закладки, не работает кнопка «назад» и т.д.
Firefox 3.6.6 При загрузке, вверху на красном фоне было предупреждение о невозможности работы с вкладками.
И вот такое предупреждение: The bookmarks and history system will not be functional.

The most common causes of this error are another program using the file or a problem with the file that was caused when the computer was shut off unexpectedly (like a power failure). The good news is that most of the time, simply restarting your computer and then restarting Firefox is the fix for both problems.
Solution 2: Create a new database
If restarting your computer doesn’t take care of things, you can fix this by having Firefox create a new places and favicon database for you. Don’t worry, it’s not as hard as it sounds.

I have the «Bookmarks and history system will not be functional» problem and not FireFox will not open at all and my whole computer freezes if I try.
For a few weeks now, I’ve been getting the «Bookmarks and history system will not be functional…» message. When I clicked for more information, FireFox would freeze.
I found a solution about a new places database, but for the past few days I can’t get FireFox to open at all. Then my whole system is frozen and I have to turn it off to get it going again, thus losing a lot of unsaved data.
How can I get FireFox back?
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Updates needed on article: Fix «The bookmarks and history system will not be functional» error message
Came across the article, but found a solution that allowed me to keep everything without losing my places file.
Removing places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal while firefox was not running allowed FF to start without a problem.
Agreed, and fuser showed that the files weren’t in use.
Using sqlite from the command line to access places.sqlite when the files were there seemed to work till I did «.schema» and then I got an error that indicated corruption.
Removing the files and then retrying «.schema» worked flawlessly.
Telling users about this possible solution would help them recover their history, etc. that they may have spent a lot of time creating.
«Bookmarks and history system will not be functional» with corrupt files found by Avast and websites loading slow ONLY in Firefox
Firefox is the only browser that lets me connect with my microphone. I need to use this feature for an online class. Earlier this evening, the message prompting me to allow or deny the class website permission to use the microphone stopped appearing, and without it the recording won’t pick up any sound and I can’t record anything.
I tried exiting and restarting Firefox. I had some extensions in use at the time, in particular Session Manager. The allow/deny message still wouldn’t appear, so I restarted my computer.
Now when I open Firefox I see the «The bookmarks and history system will not be functional» error message. In addition, the browser loads websites extremely slowly; it takes several minutes to load each page or for me to be able to click on anything (the URL bar, the menus, etc) My other browsers (Internet Explorer and Chrome) are running normally and load websites at a normal speed. I tried downloading the latest version of Firefox but it didn’t fix anything. I also tried restarting the computer again but that didn’t help either.
I ran my Avast software system check and it turned up that the following files under «C:Users(me)AppDataRoamingMozillaFirefoxProfilesIrozixj7.default» are «corrupted and unreadable»:
-cookies.sqlite-shm
-cookies.sqlite-wal
-localstore.rdf
-places.sqlite-shm
There was one more problem on the scan, but it probably isn’t relevant: for the file «C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindows DefenderDefinition Updates{9A2C6FA7-E04E-4819-B86A-8363A9D1E42A}mpengine.dll» it says «The system cannot find the path specified.» When I attempted to follow the path indicated, one of the folders (I can’t remember which) said something along the lines of «You can’t access this folder, do you want to permanently allow access to this folder?» I said yes and was able to access the folder.
I have tried to add the Places Maintenance extension but the speed is too sluggish to download anything. Trying to access any of the menus results in the browser freezing for several minutes then unfreezing but with the menu still unopened. Therefore none of the solutions found here (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional?esab=a&as=aaq) seem to work.
My questions are as follows:
-Is it possible to figure out what caused the problem in the first place?
-Is there a way for me to fix it without losing my bookmarks and history?
-How can I avoid this happening again in the future?
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [[Backing up your information]]. You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder. To quickly access this folder:
Help > Troubleshooting Information > «Show Folder» button
Next, keep this folder open, exit Firefox, and try moving the «corrupted and unreadable» files to a different folder. With the exception of localstore.rdf, which stores window positions, toolbar customizations, and other nonessential data, the other files appear to be session-specific files that hopefully are not critical. If you restart Firefox, does it behave more normally?
If not, try creating a fresh Firefox profile. It will have the Flash plugin, which is the control sites usually use to connects your camera and/or microphone, and other plugins, but otherwise will be a new setup. This article has the steps for starting up in the Profile Manager: [[Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles]].
If sites work normally in the new profile, you can import your bookmarks from your old profile, as well as copying over other files that don’t seem to be causing the problem. Some trial and error might be required to determine that. This article has some tips: [[Recovering important data from an old profile]].
If the new profile is no better, you can exit Firefox and use the Profile Manager to switch back to your original profile.
Any improvement?

Gift cards are country-specific — so US gift cards can only be used in the US on US iTunes accounts. If you are in Nigeria and it’s a US gift cards then you won’t be able to use it, in which case do you know anybody in the US that you could sell or give the card to ?
I loaded the profile song toolbar twice, how do I get rid of the duplicate and profile song will not show when I am on my FB page anymore it gives me a strange security error

If it happens again the make sure that you aren’t suppressing website colors.
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven’t enabled High Contrast in the Accessibility settings.

I get an error when starting firefox on several user profiles: the bookmarks and history are not functional something about the file being in use.
Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 workstations, the appdata folder is redirected to a network share at \serverprofiles and several users are unable to use bookmarks getting an error about the file being in use. I’m wondering if maybe my antivirus (Trend Micro) or my backups (Symantec) might be locking up the places.sqlite for these users? Though I don’t understand why it would be for some users and not others. I can’t be the first one and I’m not coming up with anything searching google endlessly. Anybody else run into this?
hello, yes this is likely caused by an external program locking access to the bookmarks/history database. you could try renaming the file in question & see if it is working when it is regenerated, this will clear bookmarks and the history though, so keep a backup…
[[Fix «The bookmarks and history system will not be functional» error message]]
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_buttons_not_working_-_Firefox
Followed the instructions in «the bookmarks and history…» article but cannot retrieve my bookmarks. Initial problem was caused by an AVG Free upgrade which was done this morning. How do I get my «stuff» back?
Upgraded AVG Free this morning. Next Firefox opening got the message «bookmarks and history system will not be functional» etc.
Followed the instructions in the article but no recovery occurred. Then spent 45 minutes on the phone with AVG, ending with them suggesting I re-install Firefox which I did (probably not wise). Still can’t get back to where I was yesterday when I was a happy camper. How can I do that?
No, AVG did not remove places.sqlite from the profile. In following the instructions given by Firefox I renamed that file by adding .old. The instructions then told me to re-open Firefox, and that when it reopened «it would create a new places database. Your browsing history will be lost but Firefox will automatically import your bookmarks from the most recent backup file.» This DID NOT happen. I have not yet tried the steps in the «Lost Bookmarks» article.
Yes, the folder «bookmarkbackups» is still in the profile folder, and time-wise it predates me renaming the places file.
I do not know whether it is possible to set AVG to ignore certain directions?
Firefox hangs for about 5 minutes on startup and about that long each time I try to do something. How do I fix this?
My problem is basically that Firefox is deadly slow and unusable because of its slowness. It takes about 5 minutes (I haven’t timed it) to bring up a window after I click on the Firefox icon in the dock. It beachballs for a while after the window comes up, and then for about five minutes after I click on the «new tab» button next to the current tab, directly above the address bar.
When I went to get the Troubleshooting Information, it didn’t take too long. I was able to click on the Help menu, ask for troubleshooting, wait (a while), and then once the page loaded, I was able to copy the information and scroll around the troubleshooting page without difficulty. Other than that, I haven’t had the patience to get to any websites. I’m sending this request from inside Safari.
I used Firefox 24 without any problem. I was unable to automatically upgrade to Firefox 25, so I downloaded it, deleted the old application, and went on my way. I started having this problem, so I took some steps based on the Knowledge Base (not listed in the order I tried them in):
I reset Firefox
I reinstalled Firefox (deleted the old application from the applications folder and dragged in the application from the mounted .dmg again)
I deleted the profile folder
I restarted my computer
I confirmed that I’m not running antivirus software
I verified and repaired my disk with Disk Utility, which showed no errors
I ran Rember (one pass), which showed no errors
I started Firefox in Safe Mode
I have twice now gotten the red bar that says, «The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox’s files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem.» I am not running antivirus. I tried renaming places.sqlite to places.sqlite.old (there was no places.sqlite-journal), which prevented the red bar from coming up the next time I started Firefox, but two or three Firefox force-quits and relaunches later, it’s back again.
Right now I’m looking at ‘top’ in Terminal, and here’s Firefox:
PID COMMAND %CPU TIME #TH #WQ #POR #MREG RPRVT RSHRD RSIZE VPRVT VSIZE PGRP PPID STATE UID
454 firefox 0.0 00:02.80 25 2 183 534 64M 47M 102M 120M 2894M 454 144 sleeping 1049
Could it be a plugin? I’m not sure where to get this information.
I can post logs from Rember and Disk Utility if that would help.
I am also currently trying to load about:crashes, but right now Firefox is trying to load «https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional?blahblahblah» and there is a little thing that says «Looking up support.cdn.mozilla.net…» at the bottom of the window, so I’m waiting for it to give up on that. To give you an idea of how long it’s taking, it already was trying to reach this URL when I started writing this.
Thanks in advance!
Here is the new troubleshooting information, if it helps.

Mail Help has some articles devoted to sending problems, e.g. “I can’t send email” or “I can’t send email because the connection to the server on port 25 timed out”. You may want to take a look at them in case there is something there that applies to you.
Something that usually works if you’re trying to use an outgoing (SMTP) server different from the one provided by your ISP (and in the case of .Mac in particular) is changing the outgoing server port to 587 instead of 25 in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Server Settings.

Hi Reynel,
I see that you have posted this query on stack overflow.
I would like to involve our SQL experts in this topic and get the best solution.
As of now to my knowledge @@TOTAL_WRITE is not supported on SQL Azure.
In the meantime, you can refer the below links for migrating your database from on-prem to Azure.
