I just ran into an issue where I got an error while staging the updates. It may not be the same thing, but in addition to removing the update state file, I ran the command ‘software-packages unstage’.

At that point, I was able to re-stage the updates and suspect there was some kind of hiccup or corruption during a previous attempt.

UPDATE: Hi everyone, the response I got from VMware support is shown below (name ****) omitted out of respect for tech.

«My name is ***** from the IUM break-fix team and I am assuming ownership of Support Request #########

Please use the VAMI page(https://vcenter-ip:5480) to check for new vcenter patch updates, The issue with update planner is known to vmware and we are working on a fix for it.

An error occurred while updating — что делать

Ошибка загрузки обновлений «An error occurred while updating» в Steam (для Dota 2, Counter Strike и других игр) встречается не так уж редко.

Именно с ними наиболее часто связана ошибка «An error occurred while updating».

    Перейдите в корневую папку Стима и найдите там «steamapps», в ней удалите папку «downloading». После перезагрузки пробуйте пройти в папку Steam и оттуда запустить его ярлык от имени администратора;

Steam

  • Отключите роутер из розетки и выключите на время ПК — далее пробуйте запустить апдейт;
  • Возможны конфликтные ситуации с вашим антивирусом, добавьте Steam в исключение;
  • Причиной оказывается отсутствие свободного места на вашем жестком диске, освободите немного пространства;
  • Откидывать перегрузки серверов тоже не стоит, попробуйте подключиться немного позже;
Dota 2 (Counter Strike).

(An error occurred while updating),

How to Fix macOS Catalina Update error: An error occurred while installing the selected updates

by Anna Sherry Updated on 2023-01-04 / Update for Mac OS

«I cant upgrade from macOS Mojave to macOS Catalina. Unable to install Catalina. ‘An error occurred while installing selected updates’. The network connection was lost.»

Trying to upgrade to Catalina and it says an error occured.»

macOS Catalina brings with it some of the really cool features that you can enjoy on your Mac machines. If you are running an old version of macOS, you can get your Mac upgraded from the Mac App Store easily. But this is also the point for many users where they are facing an issue with the update. They get a screen that says «The update has been deleted since being downloaded from the Apple Software Update server. An error occurred while installing selected updates» and the update just fails to install on the machine.

If you are also in the same situation and you are having trouble updating your Mac to the latest Catalina update, you might want to do something about the issue and get it fixed. There are a few fixes that has worked for some users and these are listed in the following guide. You can try and use these on your Mac to see if they also help you fix the update issue on your Mac.

Part 1. Working Ways to Fix «An error occurred while installing selected updates»

The 3 ways below are proved to work by users who experienced «An error occurred while installing selected updates» when installing macOS Catalina and finally solved this problem.

    1. Turn On Content Caching

Enabling content caching has also helped some users fix macOS Catalina install or update errors so it is worth giving this method a try.

Step 1. Click on the Apple logo at the top-left corner and select System Preferences.

Step 2. Click on the Sharing option.

Step 3. Tick-mark the Content Caching option on the following screen. Also, select All Content from the Cache dropdown menu.

Try downloading and installing the update on your machine.

    2. Download and Update the Upgrade in Safe Mode

When you boot your Mac in safe mode, it only loads the essential files it needs to make your operating system function. If there are any apps or settings that you think could be interfering with your macOS update procedure, safe mode should resolve the issue for you.

Step 1. Click on the Apple logo at the top-left corner and select Restart.

Step 2. While your Mac is being restarted, press and hold down the Shift key on your keyboard.

Step 3. Your Mac should now be in safe mode. Launch the Mac App Store and download and install the Catalina update.

    3. Install Catalina Using a Bootable Installer

You can also install macOS Catalina from a USB installer but you will need to first download the update to your Mac.

Step 1. Download the macOS Catalina update from the Mac App Store. Plug-in your USB drive having 16GB or more capacity to your Mac.

Step 2. Download and launch Disk Creator on your Mac. Select your USB drive in the app, choose your Catalina file, and click on Create Installer.

Step 3. Reboot your Mac and press hold down Option. Select your USB installer from the list to install the macOS update.

Part 2. Other Potential Ways to Fix macOS Catalina Update Install Errors

Besides methods listed above, below we list some other potential ways that not only fix «An error occurred while installing selected updates» but also fix many other macOS Catalina download and install errors.

    1. Force Restart Your Mac

When an update fails on your Mac, the first thing you are suggested to do is force reboot your Mac. It reboots your machine even if it is stuck and gives it a fresh start.

Force rebooting a Mac is pretty easy as you do not need to go into any settings menu to be able to do the task. All you need to do is press a keyboard combination and it will get the job done for you.

    2. Switch to a Wired Connection

Since your Mac downloads the update from the Internet, you must make sure your wireless connection is working properly. If you have any doubts or there are any issues with your connection, you might want to use a wired connection instead.

A wired connection is usually more stable and lets you update your Mac to the latest version of macOS without any issues. In order to connect your Mac to an Ethernet cable, you are going to need an adapter that works with both your cable as well as your Mac.

Once the cables are all connected, try to download and install the Catalina update. This should fix an error occurred while installing selected updates on your machine.

    3. Check Your Storage Space

macOS updates have never been small and macOS Catalina is no exception. Before you even proceed to download the update, you must make sure you have enough storage space available on your Mac to accommodate the update. You are likely going to need at least 10GB of space on your disk to download and install the update on your machine.

If you have not got enough space available on your Mac, find the large files lying around on your disk and get rid of them. This should help make more space available and you can then use it for installing the Catalina update.

    4. Remove and Re-donwload Catalina Update again

If you’re having problems downloading and installing Catalina update via Software Update or Mac App Store, you can remove the download and redownload the update again. Moreove, while downloading the macOS update from the Mac App Store is a preferred method for many users, it is not the only method to download the update.

The macOS Catalina, or any other update for that matter, is usually also available on the Apple website for you to download. So if you are experiencing issues downloading the update from the App Store, head over to the Apple website and get the update downloaded.

Once the update is downloaded and saved to your Mac, double-click on the downloaded file and it will start installing the update on your machine.

Bonus Tips: The Best Mac Data Recovery Software 2023

Your files can get lost unexpectedly before, during, or after installing a macOS update. If that happens, there is really no option for you to recover your files unless you have a backup.

Fortunately, there is a software called Tenorshare 4DDiG for Mac Data Recovery that helps you recover your files even when you do not have a backup. The following is how it works.

Download and launch the software on your Mac. Select your drive where you lost your files and click on Scan.

Preview the scan results, select the files you want to recover, and click on Recover.

Select the folder where you want to save the recovered files.

    Sum Up

If you are constantly getting the «an error occurred while installing selected updates» while updating to macOS Catalina on your Mac, the above guide will be of tremendous help to you as it teaches how to fix this issue and update the Mac without a hitch.

I am trying to run updates on VSCA 7.0 (Version: 7.0.0 | Build 16620013), however, for some reason it keeps failing and I get the following error message:

I have seen a number of posts online that suggests removing the following file: /etc/applmgmt/appliance/software_update_state.conf. I’ve done this and things still didn’t work and I am getting the same error message.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

Thank you for the reply. Could I ask how I go about patching the VCSA to a higher build to resolve the issue?

Also, this might sound like a really silly question but what is the difference between the two access methods for vCenter Server?

Error: unexpected end of file while fetching packages during yarn install #4412

    Comments

    MaxCCC commented Sep 12, 2017

On our Jenkins on Linux (we use version 1.4 of the frontend-maven-plugin)

We get this error in 50% of our run’s of the job. So sometimes it’s working. The unexpected end of file is always on another file so it has nothing to do with that.

Is it a network ‘issue’? Sometimes a network warning appears during the fetch. Can we extend some timeout of give jenkins more time to fetch the right packages?

The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:

    BYK commented Sep 12, 2017

That looks like a network or system issue. Also, your yarn version looks a bit old. If you switch to a newer version, you may get a more informative error message helping you diagnose the problem.

    MaxCCC commented Sep 12, 2017

@BYK I’ve upgraded to 0.28.4 (1.0.1 has some different folder settings). But I’m still facing the same issue/log. We just connect with our own artifactory (which we also do from our local machines where we never have this issue). The log isn’t clear.

    BYK commented Sep 12, 2017

@MaxCCC can you elaborate on why you cannot use 1.0.1 since there are many fixes on it. Actually, I’d highly recommend using one of the latest nightlies since they have even more fixes.

    BYK commented Sep 12, 2017

We just connect with our own artifactory (which we also do from our local machines where we never have this issue).

May be it is reporting an incorrect Content-Length header that confuses our requests module or Yarn itself?

    MaxCCC commented Sep 12, 2017 •

    @BYK
    Because when I use 1.0.1 I got

[ERROR] Failed to execute goal com.github.eirslett:frontend-maven-plugin:1.4:yarn Cannot run program «/xxx/mum-frontend-angular/target/node/yarn/dist/bin/yarn» (in directory «/srv/autobuild/workspace/xxx-frontend-angular»): error=2, No such file or directory
And for now we need this plugin version.

I don’t know. Even with -e or -X options it’s not telling me anything more. I don’t know much about the content-length header

    BYK commented Sep 12, 2017

Which version of Node are you using? That sounds like due to an older version of Node not supporting a new option we are using in yarn. Node 4.8, or 5.7+ should be fine for 1.0

For the issue you are experiencing, if you can find a way for us to replicate it, I’d be more than happy to help. Right now I really don’t know how or why it happens. If you can switch to 1.0, then I may be able to add more tracing or get you a specific build with more logging for debug.

    MaxCCC commented Sep 13, 2017 •

@BYK I»ll try to provide some more info. (To upgrade to 1.0 I have to ask/speak with some other people first).
We use the frontend-maven-plugin. The URL will redirect you to how we configure our node and yarn setup for this plugin. We also use node and npm where everything works fine.

The command which we are executing is mvn clean source:jar install -Pyarn -DSkipTests .
Often the first time doesn’t work and starting a new run immediately after the failed run is most of the time successful. To install Yarn we use our own Artifactory where we have some local yarn repository.

The dependencies are coming from our registry
[ERROR] error An unexpected error occurred: «https:/xxx/artifactory/api/npm/npm/@angular/router/-/router-4.1.2.tgz: unexpected end of file».

For me, my home lab had a healthy VCSA 6.7 upgrade to VCSA 7.0, performed successfully on camera on release day Apr 02 2020 here. I then had a successful VAMI upgrade back in March, to:
    7.0.0.10300 May 18 2020 Build 16189094 — Release Notes.

Alas, since Jun 23 2020’s release of 7.0.0b, I’ve been failing to be able upgrade to it. This recent release is also known as:
    7.0.0.10400 Jun 22 2020 Build 16386292 — Release Notes.

What’s the issue I ran into? Let’s say you go into vSphere Client, then you select your Menu / Hosts and Clusters / Updates / Update Planner but instead of a happy link to get you over to VAMI Updates to proceed with your update to 7.0.b, you instead are faced with this error:

    Unexpected-error-occurred-while-fetching-the-updates--TinkerTry

Unexpected error occurred while fetching the updates

Or maybe you’re in VAMI, on the Update tab, you select «Stage and Install» the upgrade, but on page 2 of the wizard you get:

    featured

Update installation failed. vCenter Server is non-operational
It is recommended that you backup vCenter Server before installing any update or patch

Why did this error happen? I do not know, sigh. If you know why this happens, please drop a public comment below, we’d all appreciate your wisdom!

What to do? VCSA seems to otherwise be working fine for me for months. Rebooting VCSA doesn’t fix this. So it was time to look for a real fix, or at least a workaround.

I found a fix for 6.7 users here on reddit, which links to this detailed article. I also demonstrated the process of doing this same fix successfully on VCSA 7.0 in my new video walk through here below, let us know if it helps you too!

    Step-by-Step

    enable-bash-shell-using-VAMI--TinkerTry

Use VAMI to Enable SSH Login to VCSA.
    1. SSH to your VCSA 7.x appliance
If you don’t have SSH access enabled, temporarily turn it on by following along by using VAMI, which in my lab meant browsing to https://vcsa.lab.localhost:5480

    2. Type your credentials, root username and password

    3. You likely don’t have BASH shell active by default, so when prompted, just type:

      shell
    4. You’ll now see a command like this
      root@vcsa [ ~ ]#

    5. Next, delete this one file, you can copy-and-paste the following 1 line command into your SSH session if you’d like:

      rm /etc/applmgmt/appliance/software_update_state.conf
    6. Try the upgrade again.

That’s it, enjoy your latest TinkerTry Tip!

    `

An error stating A fatal error occurred while fetching the update may occur in the Automatic Updater modal window inside WHMCS. It will look like this:

A fatal error occurred while fetching the update

This guide provides troubleshooting steps to identify and resolve the underlying causes of this message.

    PHP Limitations

    1. Navigate to Utilities > System > PHP Info.
    2. Ensure the values set meet the minimum requirements for using the Automatic Updater.

    Server-Side Limitations

Specific to the web server you are using, there are limitations that  can be imposed by the web server that cause the Automatic Updater to be terminated before it’s completed, resulting in the error above.

Some of the most common configurations that may cause this include:

    • Apache TimeOut directive.
    • LiteSpeed Connection Timeout.
    • Nginx proxy_read_timeout.
    • CloudLinux IO and IOPS limits.

Observing the server response with Network Analyser

Your browser’s network analyser developer tool can be used to observe the raw response from the server response (in addition to your own server logs):

    1. Follow these steps to enable your browser’s network analyser tool.
    2. Return to Utilities > Update WHMCS.
    3. Click Begin Update and follow the on-screen instructions to begin the update process.
    4. In the network analyser, select the update.php entry.
    5. Select the Response tab.

The network analyzer will now display the raw response from your server. This may confirm a PHP error or server timeout message.

Work with your server administrator or hosting provider to increase the relevant timeout. Then, attempt to use the Automatic Updater again.

Testing the length of execution for a PHP script

To check and confirm that PHP scripts can run until the WHMCS defined  max_execution_time of 300 seconds:

    1. Download this  test_execution_time.php script:

    test_execution_time.php

    2. Upload it to your WHMCS directory.

    3. Make a cURL request to that file. For example:

    curl https://example.com/test_execution_time.php

    4. A successful test will, after 280 seconds (the defined value in the test script), yield a response similar to this:

shutdown function called after 281.08206486702 seconds.

Any other response indicates the script was terminated before 280 seconds:

    • Internal Server Error A general failure. Review the server error logs.
    • No response likely indicates a PHP fatal error has occurred, like a lower  max_execution_time value exceeded by the script.
    • Another HTTP error status code (504 for example).

It is necessary to work with your server administrator or hosting provider to determine why the test_execution_time.php script is being terminated before 280 seconds and correct it.

Once the test_execution_time.php script can run for  280 seconds, attempt to use the Automatic Updater again.

Applying the update via Command Line

Where it is not possible for the aforementioned limiting factors to be removed, applying the update via the Server Command Line will typically avoid timeout issues.

Follow all the steps in Updating WHMCS at the command line to complete the update process.
