Update alternatives error no alternatives for default plymouth

I have been messing around with Plymouth themes and have managed to bungle them. After some deleting and reinstalling, if I run the terminal line sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymout...

It appears you are missing a symbolic link compared to my old installation:

I’ve use the Earth Sunrise plymouth theme in the past but it goes by too fast on an NVMe SSD nowdays. Below are the installation instructions from: Newly Added Plymouth Theme Not Showing Up During Boot

Change path names from <16.04 to 16.04 format

The file /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth had old paths from Ubuntu 14.04 and had to changed to reflect Ubuntu 16.04.

Make sure yours contains path names like this:

[Plymouth Theme]
Name=Earth Sunrise
Description=This theme is a modification of Andre "Osku" Schmidt's Space sunrise plymouth theme
ModuleName=script

[script]
ImageDir=/usr/share/plymouth/themes/earth-sunrise
ScriptFile=/usr/share/plymouth/themes/earth-sunrise/earth-sunrise.script

Frame Buffer in initramfs-tools

Edit the file /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash and add this line:

FRAMEBUFFER=y

Smooth transition to GDM

To enable smooth transition you have to disable your display manager unit, e.g.

systemctl disable gdm.service

Enable the respective DM-plymouth Unit (GDM, LXDM, SLiM units provided), e.g.

systemctl enable gdm-plymouth.service

Turn on debug

Edit the file /etc/default/grub and search for LINUX_DEFAULT line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash vt.handoff=7 kaslr"

and change it to this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="plymouth:debug splash vt.handoff=7 kaslr"

Note plymouth:debug is the important thing. Also splash is always required to invoke plymouth.

After rebooting look into the file /var/log/plymouth-debug.log and it should look something like this:

Update initramfs

After making any of the above changes run:

sudo update-initramfs -u -k all

I was just trying to install vanilla-gnome-desktop by means of

apt install vanilla-gnome-desktop

… in order to get a more vanilla GNOME experience than the default on Ubuntu Desktop 18.04.

It errored out the first time around and the problem doesn’t appear to be fixable by a mere apt install either:

# apt install vanilla-gnome-desktop

vanilla-gnome-desktop is already the newest version (0.83).

Setting up plymouth-theme-ubuntu-gnome-logo (18.04.0) ...
update-alternatives: error: alternative link /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.grub is already managed by default.grub
dpkg: error processing package plymouth-theme-ubuntu-gnome-logo (--configure):

Errors were encountered while processing:
 plymouth-theme-ubuntu-gnome-logo
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

So anyway, I had previously purged the packages plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo and plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text and installed plymouth-disabler.

I furthermore created myself a little file /etc/grub-black-and-white containing:

if background_color 0,0,0,0; then
    clear
fi

Which I «installed» by means of

update-alternatives --install /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.grub default.grub /etc/grub-black-and-white 100

However, I had to remove that (update-alternatives --remove default.grub /etc/grub-black-and-white) in order for plymouth-theme-ubuntu-gnome-logo to be installed properly, fixing the above issue.

But now when I want to reinstantiate my fixed /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.grub, pointing to /etc/grub-black-and-white, it complains again:

# update-alternatives --install /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.grub default.grub /etc/grub-black-and-white 100
update-alternatives: error: alternative link /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.grub is already managed by default.plymouth

While I obviously can once again manually override it, my goal would be to have my setting take precedence over whatever some package chooses for /usr/share/plymouth/themes/default.grub and for that to persist.

Is there a way to achieve this with update-alternatives? How?

  1. GUI to manage Plymouth themes Ubuntu 14.04

    Can anyone help with this?
    I’ve tried installing Super-boot-manager — added the ppa, but I then get «some packages were ignored or old ones used» and then «can’t find package super-boot-manager»

    I’ve used the CLI process here, but the command «sudo update-alternatives –config default.plymouth» gives «update-alternatives: error: unknown argument `–config’. I looked at the man pages for update-alternatives and it says to use — before the config argument, but that still produces the same error.

    What’s currently happening is that on boot up I get the edubuntu splash screen. I’ve changed the config file default.plymouth in /lib/plymouth/ to Ubuntu rather than edubuntu, but I’m still getting the edubuntu splash screen.

    What I’m looking to do is to change the splash screen at boot, and the sign on screen backgrounds to something other than the plain colour, but I don’t want the edubuntu screen!

    At the very least, I’d like to get back to the original Ubuntu theme!

  2. Re: GUI to manage Plymouth themes Ubuntu 14.04

    Maybe you are forgetting a step:

    After using the command sudo update-alternatives —config default.plymouth to select a new theme,
    you need to run the command sudo update-initramfs -u and then reboot.

  3. Re: GUI to manage Plymouth themes Ubuntu 14.04

    Copy Dennis N’s command because the one you posted was using a single long dash before config …ie –config
    Whereas it should be a double dash …ie —config

    Hi, sorry I’ve not been back, been a bit busy!
    If you look at my OP, you’ll see I used the «—» before the config argument, and got the same error message.

    Can you run it again and copy and paste your terminal output.
    eg

    Code:

    glen@Trusty:~$ sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth
    [sudo] password for glen:
    There are 4 choices for the alternative default.plymouth (providing /lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth).

      Selection    Path                                                               Priority   Status
    ------------------------------------------------------------
      0            /lib/plymouth/themes/moka-logo/moka-logo.plymouth                   150       auto mode
      1            /lib/plymouth/themes/moka-logo/moka-logo.plymouth                   150       manual mode
      2            /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-logo/ubuntu-logo-scale-2.plymouth       99        manual mode
    * 3            /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-logo/ubuntu-logo.plymouth               100       manual mode
      4            /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntustudio-logo/ubuntustudio-logo.plymouth   150       manual mode

    Press enter to keep the current choice[*], or type selection number:

  6. Re: GUI to manage Plymouth themes Ubuntu 14.04

    For some inexplicable reason, the command has now decided to work, with no error message, and I’ve been able to select the theme, which I wasn’t able to do before.
    I’m hoping it’s now fixed!

    Thanks for the input.
    Cheers
