WE TRY TO ACCOMMODATE FOR ALL OF OUR GUESTS. CORPORATE WERE ABLE TO SURVEY SOME EXTRA /NFORMAT/ON FOR US FOR THAT EVEN/NG SO WE COULD TRULY TAKE OUR /DEAS AND HELP THEM BLOOM.

Speaks in all caps, proper syntax and replaces the letter «i» with «/». Occasionally makes food puns.

Raurou Dersal is a secondary troll in Vast Error. His associated alchemic sigil is Vitriol.

In Raurou’s trollodex entry, his bullet points are listed as:

  • bringing back a lost art, deliciously
  • sunny side down, never poaches
  • fixated on nightmares, and they aren’t from the kitchen

Contents

Etymology

Raurou most likely derived from the food ‘rourou’ which is a dish of taro leaves cooked in water and coconut milk. Raurou could also potentially have came from ‘ǒu ròu’ (偶肉) meaning ‘even meat’.

Dersal could possibly come from the kurdish word ‘dersa’ which means lesson.

Biography

Raurou is a troll credited for the revival of the culinary arts on Repiton, and a well-known chef at that. He also owns a personal culinary school and teaches at it in his own time.

Personality and traits

Raurou uses a mostly formal and professional tone. He is said to be strict when teaching, but appears to be able to motivate his students to do their very best nontheless.

He shows a fear of what people may be thinking and is nervous about loud figures of authority. Raurou puts up a front around those who aren’t close to him. His personality is mostly fixated on paranoia.

Relationships

Lowren Iphsum

Lowren is Raurou’s matesprit, and she was designed by Zamboozle. She is briefly mentioned in Volume 6 when Secily first speaks to Raurou.

Slashe Voorse

Slashe Voorse is Raurou’s moirail, and he was designed by GreaserParty.

Ramhar Tentak

Ramhar is Raurou’s kismesis, and he was designed by Colonel Snivy. He is referenced but not named in Snowbound Blood Volume 6.

Edolon Vryche

Uses the «Book Antiqua» font and types with proper grammar and syntax. Will sometimes use the «:)» emoticon. In person, speaks in all lowercase.

Edolon Vryche is a secondary troll and an antagonist in Vast Error.

He is a member of Weird Al’s mysterious apocalyptic laughter cult that forces and brainwashes people into being happy. He regularly tries to coerce Serpaz into joining it. His associated alchemic sigil is Purification.

Contents

Etymology

Edolon’s name likely comes from the word eidolon, meaning either «a representation of an ideal form», a ghost, or an elusive entity, all of which fit Edolon’s character and motif to some degree

In mythos, eidolones were «daimones (spirits) or ghosts which possessed the living», which may hint at Eidolon’s change in nature following Seinru’s sacrifice.

Vryche may come from «ryche», a middle english spelling of rich, or perhaps, in more modern context may even denote «an enemy player that is quite challenging to eliminate or fight against» or «one who talks in a strange, obtuse fashion regarding online forums».

Biography

He first appeared on Murrit’s hive, along with Weird Al, telling him that he will prepare everything that the 12 main trolls needed in order to enter the Game.

Personality and Traits

Edolon is as mysterious as he is creepy. From what little is known of him, Edolon seems to behave like a religious fanatic and is in constant pursuit of new members. He knows how to get under people’s skins, and isn’t afraid to prey on their insecurities under the guise of concern or innocent questions. Edolon has shown uncertain and nervous qualities before the sacrifice of his lover, Seinru, which is heavily contrasted by the present character he is known to be.

Relationships

Seinru Narako

Seinru was the lover of Edolon before they were sacrificed for the cult under vague circumstances, possibly in order for him to obtain the powers of doom and reach his full potential.

Serpaz Helilo

Serpaz considers Edolon to be a nuisance and a creep, largely due to her distaste for the cult he follows on the account of how their vastly differing ideals about how to bring about laughter (Serpaz claims that they make liberal use of brainwashing to make people laugh). She finds his constant invitations to join his cult to be greatly annoying and wishes that he leave her alone.

Sestro Enthal

Please, bear with the gaps until it is time for them to be appropriately filled.
This page has missing content or no content at all! Beef it up with some information before it is lost to the void.

Speaks with proper grammar and syntax, entirely lower case. Prefixes all lines with «∞».

Sestro Enthal is a secondary troll in Vast Error. His associated alchemic sigil is Sublimation.

In Sestro’s trollodex entry, his bullet points are listed as:

  • overthinks before he acts
  • created to carry dead weight
  • he’s ready for a change, but the world isn’t

Contents

Etymology

The word ‘sestro’ means relating to or located on the left side. This may connect his analytical nature, as the left brain is believed to be associated with logical thought. Sestro also can mean inauspicious or ominous, or ‘fate’ and ‘habit’ if used as a noun. ‘Enthal’ when translated from German, means ‘contained’.

Biography

Sestro Enthal is the heir to Corporate, destined to take control and lead Repiton. He was created after the Executive’s health declined greatly.

In Snowbound Blood

Sestro was first seen inside of his office, a phone held to his ear as he nods along to Calder’s rant of his late shipments. As Secily shoots the window of his own office, he ends his call with Calder and turns off the alarm. He then gives her an assignment to retrieve the cargo that contains The Vivifier’s blood that was stolen by her followers.

He also instructs her to capture the culprits behind the assassination of the three trolls that was in charge of delivering it to the Corporate, counting on her to accomplish her given assignment.

After Snowbound Blood

He was first seen in his office, staring at something with his matesprit, Hamifi, was standing behind him.

Later, after the chaos that Ellsee caused at the Stronghold 21, he and Hamifi stared at the large pillar in the middle of the site as he began stressing himself out, asking her if he’s going to be alright after he unlocked his alchemical potential, after the stronghold P3P-51 meltdown and with Secily during the Snowbound Blood events.

He also tells her that he doesn’t want to be in a coma again as he asks her again if he’s going to be okay. Hamifi helps him get inside the building after telling him that the recent event that has occurred in the Stronghold 21 will distract the trolls for a couple of hours.

As they take the elevator, he stares at the wall of the elevator as Hamifi tells him that all that the things he had witnessed before wasn’t his fault to begin with and questioned him as to why he hasn’t been looking at her.

He begins telling her about the discussion he had with Rodere as he once again mentions to her that he isn’t ready to take over the Repiton Corporation as well as being the leader to the approximately 36,000 trolls that are currently living in Stronghold 21. Hamifi tells him that he could always give away the position of being the heir to the Repiton Corporation and both of them can retire to the countryside, though both of them knew they weren’t okay with it.

As she asked him whether or not he still wants the position, the elevator opens as they walk down the walls, making their way to The Executive’s office.

Personality and Traits

He tends to get stressed easily and is capable of sending himself into a coma.

Relationships

Hamifi Hekrix

Hamifi is his bonded matesprit. She and Sestro are stated to be literally made for each other.

Rodere

Rodere commissioned his hatching after the Executive’s health declined. She’s implied to have taken care of Sestro during his comas.

The Executive

Sestro is the direct descendant of the Executive who was absent for most of Sestro’s upbringing.

Because of these factors you’ve been left a little SOCIALLY HINDERED. Your MATESPRIT has spent a lot of time teaching you the ropes but you aren’t able to grasp at a lot of the “lingo” your clique tosses around “on the reg”. You desperately make the attempt regardless though. You’ve spent a majority of your free time READING throughout your life as an aid to try and see what you’ve missed, giving you a profound knowledge of PLANETARY HISTORY and making you a bit of a buff in the process. You also like to give POETRY a try when you can but it tends to wax a little too far on the complex side for your tastes. You were never good at riddles and figures of speech.

These mini-rebellions are grounds of territorial abuse to your custodian, and as such you have MANY SCRAPES WITH HIM, quite literally in fact. These poisoned marks would normally kill on principle, but your body has a PSEUDO-HEALING FACTOR that mends your wounds albeit leaving them SCARRED AND DISFIGURED. You are EXTREMELY SENSITIVE about this, and as such make sure to COVER THEM UP as much as possible.

You are the TWELFTH and FINAL in a long line of EXTRATERRESTRIAL PROPHETS, the true name of these multiuniversal deities only given the vague term of STAR CHILDREN. Your overall purpose in life is to teach others about COMING TOGETHER. • Familial Body Snatcher: Becomes possessed by her ancestor.
  • Parody Sue: Has been described as her character trope, but is as harshly subverted as all others. If not the most harshly.

Your religious allegiances lie within that of the MIRTHAMANIACS. A specific breed of JESTER-ESQUE PERSONAS, that wishes to promote THE IDEOLOGY OF RIGHTEOUS JUDGEMENT against LETHAL FALLACIES OF CORRUPTION RUNNING WILD IN THE SYSTEM. This is a fancy way of promoting the perverse nature of CHOREOGRAPHED INFIGHTING GRUDGE MATCHES to decide who TRULY DESERVES A SPOT AT THE TOP OF THE LADDER with the RAWED BROTHERS. As well as keeping the personal intents of GRIEVANCE SLAUGHTERING away from the public. Everybody’s got a price.

A cantankerous troll who goes by the nickname of ‘Taz’, and is religiously affiliated with a cult of corrupt wrestler personas called the «Mirthamaniacs».

She is the Sylph of Rage. Her trolltag is perniciousOverkill, her sign is based on the alchemical symbol for Platinum.

She has allocated her STRIFE SPECIBUS with the MACEKIND ABSTRATUS. She was the second troll introduced.

~She begins and ends her sen+ences wi+h a +ilde and replaces +'s wi+h plus signs~
~She also CAPI+ALIZES words some+imes for emphasis~

  • Ax-Crazy: Has murdered at least one other Mirthamaniac and supposedly many others along with various lowbloods.
  • Boobs of Steel: Often not noticeable, due to the Limited Artstyle nature of the Homestuck artstyle, but as seen during the few times Taz is seen from specific angles in the more detailed Hero Mode art shots, she has a much more noticeable bust than most of the other female cast, and Murrit outright calls her «big breasted», and he constantly mentions and nicknames her breasts when speaking to her. And, as typical of a Purple-Blood, she is also one of the most physically imposing of the cast, one of the most physically strong of the cast, prefers using the heavy and brutal Macekind Specibus, and is always quick to choose physical, often violent solutions to problems.
  • Juggalo: A parody of a parody of juggalos.
  • Leitmotif: Razzmatazz.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: What the Mirthamaniac’s supposedly revolve their practices around, only hiding it in a show like format to distract others from the fact that they kill lowbloods as population control.
  • Wall of Weapons: Has a lot of various torture weapons in her respiteblock and her hive, including a novelty hand clapper.

As a RUTHLESS SWINDLER and CARD SHARK in the world of many various GAMBLING SPORTS, you acquired a fine taste for TAKING WHAT YOU WANT regardless if you earned it or not, and MURDERING any poor sucker who didn’t pony up the goods. You actually ended up meeting your PARTNER, Dismas, through these means. You still technically OWN HIS SOUL from that virtual poker game about two or so sweeps back, not that it matters now. You soon realized that wasn’t the life you wanted to lead, and as such you GAVE IT ALL UP. Ending your reign and betraying the family you once had, sentencing one to a LIFE of COMMUNITY SERVICE and the other three INTO HIDING.

A sleazy, lecherous troll who is more complex than first glance would suggest.

He is the Thief of Time. His trolltag is unclaspedKahuna, his sign is based on the alchemical symbol for Lead.

He has allocated his STRIFE SPECIBUS with the 2xKNUCKLEKIND ABSTRATUS. He was the fifth troll introduced.

  • Anime Hair: His reverse pompadour.
  • Complexity Addiction: Nobody knows how or why Murrit works the way he does, most of the other trolls don’t even understand what he’s saying. And it seems he would rather keep it that way.
  • Cool Shades: His shutter shades, all fifty two pairs of them. Which coincidentally is the same number in a deck of cards and in year, (or in this case, half of a sweep) Murrit switches between all color variations of his shades within this timeframe.
  • Fetish: Hentai. Though nobody knows if he actually likes it at this point or if it’s still just a long running gag to make fun of another troll’s interest, including himself.
  • Filth: His «hentai dungeon», as well as nude drawings of all of his friends on body pillows.
  • Fish People: Subverted, as he refuses to act or acknowledge his place according to GS.
  • Leitmotif: Mammory Master.
  • The Gambler: In the past.
  • The Nicknamer: Has not once referred to another character by their real name and instead opts to use fitting nicknames about their personality or interests. Usually insulting.
  • Young Entrepreneur: His past self could be classified as this before joining the Dead Shufflers, which made him more of a ruthless Con Man.

    Calder Kerian

Calder Kerian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/calder_kerian.png

Your life is secured as not only a SEA DWELLER, but because you hold the highest SHADE of violet blood remaining on the hemospectrum, MAGENTA. A gift given to you by your ANCESTOR, a gift which leaves you as a societal pariah by association due to his unbridled jealousy… Your goal is to undo the mess he made and become a POWERFUL LEADER yourself, sending society into a new age with instated law and legislation. You make strides towards this goal by using your endangerment as leverage to publish SLANDEROUS PERIODICALS speaking on topical issues while harshly criticizing those who disagree with what you put out into the public. Even from his shadow, you are regarded as overly SELF-IMPORTANT. But that exact attitude has given you a LEGION of admirers amongst the scoffing crowd, ones that agree with your ideals and see the facts for what they truly are.

He is the Maid of Void. His trolltag is grandioseSaturation. His symbol is based upon the alchemical symbol for Iron.

He has allocated his STRIFE SPECIBUS with the GLAIVEKIND, HALBERDKIND, AND GOLFCLUBKIND ABSTRATI.

He does not use a typing quirk of any sort because he sees it as silly and useless.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Word of God declares that pretty much everyone on the planet would hate Calder on principal because of his ancestry.
  • Authority in Name Only: While typically a higher blood caste is indicative of a ruling status, and Calder has the highest blood available, he has nowhere near the power he’d like to. Not helped that Repiton is an apparent capitalist hellscape where the greater corporate powers are the only ones who have any real power.
  • Genocide Backfire: On the receiving end of his ancestor’s actions during his reign, during which almost every sea dweller in existence was wiped out.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: One of his most well known traits is that he has a very announced and unabashed lack of respect for the female gender. Often insulting the girls he knows both to others and even to their faces. Fittingly, his sign, the alchemic symbol for iron, is also most commonly associated with the ‘male’ symbol.
  • Last of His Kind: While not the last sea dweller, Calder is the last of the sea dwellers with a shade of magenta blood, the closest kind left to proper fuschia. Not that it gives him much right to rule, given how this attempted power grab ended up wiping out the future monarchy altogether.
  • Must Make Amends: One of Calder’s primary motivations for his current actions and interests. Whether out of guilt or a simple sense of duty, his biggest goal at present is to right the wrongs of his ancestor to fix the planet and reinstate a proper rule over the planet again, and fix all the ways that his ancestor damaged the planet.
  • Noodle Incident: There are apparently as of yet unknown events in the past which formed his present day opinions about things.
  • Parental Neglect: Word of god is that Calder’s lusus, a giant female anglerfish, really doesn’t care about her charge and leaves him to do whatever while she does her own thing. And Calder resents her for this. Though, considering his beliefs and the interactions between male and female anglerfish, that may not be the only reason for his resentment.
  • Redeeming Replacement: How he views himself. At present, his blood color and the Kerian name are viewed on Repiton as symbols of genocide and violence. His current goal is to work past this and regain control of the planet to set things back into proper order, fixing what was done by his legacy in the past.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Though Calder is a royal in name only, he’s actively working to repair the damage his ancestor did, and trying to fight the ruling powers which continue to ruin Repiton in pursuit of wealth. Though this is mostly seen as him running magazines hosting controversial topics using what limited authority his blood allows him.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: Seems to feel this way about his ancestor’s reign on Repiton, during which 99.9% of all sea dwellers were killed out of apparent jealousy, and every single Fuschia blood was wiped out. Leaving his ancestor, and Calder himself, as the highest shade of blood left on Repiton (magenta).
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: With his irritating behavior and his outspoken beliefs about gender, it’s little wonder as to why he spends most of his time alone despite being able to contact them. Hinted to have not been the case in earlier times, but as of the present everyone else in the group has dropped him like an empty soda can.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: «Calder: Traverse corridor» hints at a past Calder who was decidedly much less of a pompous jerk. Showing photographs of him smiling with former kismesis Serpaz, former moirail Occeus, and hanging around with characters like Laivan, Murrit, and even Arcjec
  • We Used to Be Friends: Calder used to be friends with much of the rest of the group, being close enough to have pictures of Murrit, Laivan, and Arcjec in the hallway connected to his hive’s throne room. As well as having once been moirails with Occeus and kismesis with Serpaz. However, word of god declares that everyone else abandoned him and whatever relationships they had with him. Leaving him only tangentially related to the group and part of their game.
  • Wine Is Classy: Deliberately attempts to invoke this in order to seem more refined and sophisticated to others. Too bad he can’t stand the taste.

Ancestors

     The Annalist

The Annalist

Sova’s ancestor who lived during the Renaissance. A writer who created many scrolls which Sova herself owns in the present day. She suffered a life of hardships as numerous as they were intense.

     The Unknown/The Forgiven

The Unknown/The Forgiven

Arcjec’s ancestor who lived during the Renaissance. After committing suicide for unknown reasons by hanging, he was brought back to life by The Vivifier using the blood curse that came with her Lime blood.

  • Driven to Suicide: For unknown reasons, he hung himself from a tree and killed himself. Where he was found not long after by the Vivifier.

     The Vivifier

The Vivifier

Also knowns as Zekura Raines. Ellsee’s ancestor who lived during the Renaissance. Carried the same blood curse that Ellsee does, which she shared with The Forgiven after he killed himself. Was once in a pale relationship with The Exemplar, who broke it off when she learned that The Vivifier had shared her blood curse with someone else when she had promised it to her.

     The Exemplar

The Exemplar

Also known as Cyprim Shukra. Albion’s ancestor who lived during the Renaissance. The Twelfth and final Star Child of her bloodline, relinquished her title as The Pure Oneself in order to bind herself to Repiton. Formerly in a moirallegiance with The Vivifier, she felt betrayed when she learned that the latter passed on her blood curse to The Forgiven instead to revive his dead body. Matesprits with Dismas’s ancestor, he died, and not long after she was murdered by her followers for unknown reasons. It is through her comunications that Albion learns the truth behind The Game, and receives a final warning to keep Ellsee away form it, and to not trust White Noise.

     The Jagerman

The Jagerman

Laivan’s ancestor who lived during the Renaissance. An accomplished hunter whose skills provided his companions with many a meal when they were on the run.

  • Pelts of the Barbarian: Wears a fur of unknown origin around his neck as part of his normal clothing, presumably having hunted it himself.

     Acerigger Switchem

Acerigger Switchem

Murrit’s ancestor who lived during the Renaissance. A serial bonder who chemically bonded with multiple trolls, including Caesar Consceleratus Persolus, only to leave them to suffer the effects of withdrawals. Simply because he could and he enjoyed seeing them suffer.

  • Villainous Legacy: Because of his tendency to bond with and then leave Trolls, it set a bad precedent on Repiton for Trolls who wanted to have more than one bondmate in a single quadrant, or more than the allotted two. Even in present day, the social ramifications on relationships can still be felt across the board.

     Caesar Consceleratus Persolus

Caesar Consceleratus Persolus

Calder’s ancestor who lived and reigned over Repiton during the Renaissance. He ordered a mass genocide against all sea dwellers on the planet, eliminating every last Fuschia blood, leaving him and his eventual descendant as the highest shade of violet blood on Repiton, and eliminating 99.9% of the planet’s sea dweller population.

  • Genocide from the Inside: During his reign, accomplished the deaths of every member of the Fuschia caste, and reduced the total number of sea dwellers on the planet to a mere 50, having wiped out 99.99% of the sea dweller population.
  • Villainous Legacy: Because of his actions in causing the murder of most all the other sea dwellers, the present day planet’s environment is shot to hell and back and dangerously polluted. To the point all present know his line’s name and even blood color with absolute disdain.

Other Characters

    White Noise

White Noise

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/whitenoisesprite_by_sparaze_db814pd.png

The enigmatic ETERNAL GUARDIAN of Repiton. He has played a significant role in the history of the planet and the events of Vast Error. Oh and he’s the narrator.

  • Berserk Button:
    • Being compared to his father Gaiaeon.

White Noise: DON’T YOU DARE COMPARE ME TO HIM.

    • Realizing that his omnipotence has been compromised. Like when learning from Murrit what Elisee did to make everyone weary of her.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: His bread and butter, as all of the narration is White Noise himself expositing to the audience.
  • Dem Bones: Just look at him.
  • Foil: To the other immortal troll guardian, Doc Scratch. Noise is a gracious host who greatly enjoys conversing with visitors whom he summons into his static realm. Unlike Doc Scratch, however, he is very personable and isn’t very smug, but is instead slightly overbearing and overly-talkative in conversation.
  • Medium Awareness: White Noise appears to have some amount of awareness of what’s going on. Appearing to be speaking to the audience about things that are happening in the comic and such.
  • Narrator All Along: He’s the narrator.
  • Pet the Dog: He managed to change quite a few elements of The Game, such as getting Derse to not be as violent as they were in previsions versions and having the Trolls’ planet teleported with them into the Medium rather than being abandoned and destroyed.

     Weird Al

Weird Al

Otherwise known as the «Weird Alchemist». A Troll version of Weird Al Yankovic. Heads a cult determined to make people happy. Whether they want to be or not.

  • Affably Evil: He the head of an insane happiness cult, but still cares deeply for his members, such as nuzzling Edolon’s hair when he sacrifices Serpaz’s lusus to unlock his powers.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: He looks just like the real-life Weird Al Yankovic, albeit with shadowy troll skin and horns.

     Edolon

Edolon

Member of the Weird Al cult who acts with as of yet unknown intents. Has some past association with Serpaz.

     Sestro

Sestro

The Corporate Heir. A purple blood who is set to one day take control of the planet-wide megaconglomerate known only as Corporate.

     Hamifi

Hamifi

The Advisor. A jade blood who is Advisor to Sestro.

     Rogi

Rogi

Occeus’s golem lab assistant that he created from parts of dead Trolls. A successful animation, though he lacks a soul and is not especially bright.

     The Dead Shufflers

A group of notorious white-collar Dersites kingpins. Lead by Jack Noir, also known as Scathing Sharper, their group consists of Defrauding Dealer, Hustle Bones and Charmed Defalcators. They ruled Derse with an iron fist until their newest member, the Dreamself of Murrit Turkin got bored of them and screwed them over. Only Scathing Sharper was punished, as DD, HB, CD sold him out and are now in witness protection, while SS became THE TRASH MAN.
They take center stage in Intermission 2 Side 1, where are invited to a transdimensional space called HOTEL CALIFORNIA with the express purpose of devaluing it and facing off against SS’s Arch Nemesis.

Re: The Vast Error Thread

Oh man, the author of the hit webcomic, Vast Error, replied to me! I’m currently farting right now, this is so cool! For real, though, that was very thought out, very good. I’ll just write this quick, so as to clear up any misconceptions and tidy up everything, put a bow on it, and send it to kingdom come because holy shit I wrote a lot these past couple a days.

Admittedly, a lot of these questions felt a bit rhetorical, like there wasn’t really much to be stated with it. This isn’t taking the piss out of you, but it does make reading these posts kind of hard to navigate in terms of where the actual point lies. Let it be known that I’m trying my best, here.

And you’d be right, because I wrote as much! I wasn’t, and am not, trying to «start shit» here, only point out some stuff and give some of my opinions, is all. Like I wrote to chalupa, I don’t have all the information, it would be foolish of me to make assumptions.

Even Homestuck itself has a fluid art form, taking to Andrew’s whims. Granted them being ANDREW’S whims is an important distinction, but within Homestuck itself these styles have been noted as being «symbolic renderings». It may very well be the case, that the use of this style falls under similar circumstances. That what we currently view the comic as is not how things ACTUALLY ARE, but how we are «meant to be seeing» them. But that choice wasn’t made by you. It’s something to consider moving forward.

I will keep that in mind as I read, and I eagerly await any art shifts in the future, for reasons I already stated.

Functionally, VE is not about the constant organic build when it comes to how its characters are presented and how beats of their stories play out, and if that isn’t your cup of tea, that’s more than fine. But the way you phrase it here makes it sound as though it’s lesser to Homestuck in this capacity.

For this, I’d like to say that that was not my intention (Homestuck and VE are, obviously, different, and I just wanted to point that out), and I wholly agree with what you wrote.

Lastly, and this one I won’t use the quote function: «VE is a comic that is focused more on it’s archival ends than it’s serialized means. «
This one is something I got no opinion on, as I’m not a storyteller (yet), so I can’t say which one is the better way to conduce one’s story creation process. That written, I hope you the best in you’re endeavors, Austin. :olliesouty:

One way I think homestuck struggles with is it’s villains, Eridan, Caliborn and Gamzee are all entertaining villains which make you feel really good to root against. But the thing is they never get a satisfying comeuppance when its their due time to get their comeuppance, they either get off way too lightly or not at all.

Since act 2 is over we’ve set up the 3(technically four if you count the eyeball man thats harassing WN) antagonistic forces in Edolon, Pozzol and Talald. So far it’s very easy and fun to root against them which, while I’m not sure is the actual point, does feel good to do so because well they come across as obstacles for our main cast.

Will they, if they choose to carry themselves as antagonistic forces, get a good comeuppance that makes keeping up with them and rooting against them feel good? Again this all depends on those three REMAINING antagonistic forces within the story but I would personally like to see it happen.

I’ll drink to that. Suppose it’s not so much a VE thing as much as simply a consequence of the lack of the traditional end-of-the-world SBURB element, which has always been a bit of a pet storytelling peeve of mine. Apocalyptic stories are fine but it’s hard to write people reacting to the end of all the know and love.

I read like 400 pages I think
I didnt like the drama and most characters but the art and production value are stellar
But its NOT FUNNY so it gets a 5/10

Talk to me when you get to the «you let me casually sit on your couch, therefore granting me dominance over the situation» bit, only then can we discuss comedy.

hot take but sova and albion should kiss

I take back everything I’ve said thus far, the comic doesn’t really start to get good until this happens.

The clear love and care that the author seems to put into this weird troll comic that is shown through their detailed and concise replies to criticism without any form of strawmanning or underhanded tactics whatsoever have taught me that there is probably value in this, and so I will begin reading it.

I’m glad you think so! Honestly, in the past I haven’t exactly been known for my amazing responses to «critique», but truthfully I think this is one of the few times I’ve really had the chance to speak like this in regards to it. I mentioned in an earlier post that I always feel very put on the spot or taken out of context when it comes to a lot of things people take from me and how I respond to less enthused fans. But personally, this is because I feel like a lot of VE critique either has been purposefully destructive or in bad faith. Which seems very presumptuous of me, I’m sure, but when a bulk of the critique comes from other petty fan adventure authors, people with a pre-established beef, or just people who aren’t really willing to give you or your work a chance on principle? There’s only so much good to glean from it.

For example, I’ve made a couple posts in the past on Twitter about how people who worship at the altar of early Homestuck kind of suck. These posts were made under in response to people on a few select platforms who harass me, my co-workers on VE/HS, and my friends for making VE in the first place and were obviously putting on a sort of guise of superiority to allow for greater scrutiny. Obviously, saying people who like early Homestuck more alone is ludicrous, I’M one of those people, believe it or not. While many others agreed, some thought this was a way of me using a get out of jail free card to rally people against those who think late HS/VE is bad. And some people responded with those presumptions, and I either shut them down with a dumb joke or blocked them outright.

I made the post because sometimes I do get so bothered about something that I feel the need to speak up. Not really about the work itself but for the real lives of people attached to it, and how they feel when they have to hear some of these things. A lot of times when people enjoy something or someone, they like to see the persona of the person rather than the person who is actually there. I come off as abrasive and kind of like a smart ass online sometimes, a funnyman of sorts even, but I also have always had major issues with wanting everybody to like me regardless of whether or not I even want them to do so. The problem is that I can’t hide behind irony as a cover and I’ve learned that I’m not good at keeping my mouth shut when it comes to things I care about. Consistency and honesty are things I value, not just in my own life but to offer to others as well as a content creator. I never want to stay silent when there’s something that I feel is wrong is said, but recently I’ve learned some things just can’t be helped.

I’ve made various posts and genuine as possible apologies for certain issues people have with the comic, which also have fallen under fire by different groups of people for one reason or another. It doesn’t feel good to find, and it doesn’t feel good to have people shit on your character for it either. Especially when you’re accessible enough to see all of it regardless, only adding fuel to the fire. Recently, after seeing some major VE hate tossed around, I think I finally kinda woke up to how tired of dealing with it I was; because I didn’t really feel the need to comment to those I’m close with and I didn’t feel upset. It took total indifference and lethargy for me to finally see that looking at all of this stuff and letting these people get to me isn’t healthy.

So I’ve kind of resolved to just speak my mind for me when I deem it necessary or when I have genuine input to give. I like doing this here thusfar, since it’s not something I feel can be buried or dogpiled on like on Discord, as one-sided as Tumblr, or as volatile as Twitter. I think hearing all of these opinions, regardless of how much I actually agree or not, has been some of the best constructive criticism for the comic that I’ve gotten since it really began. I hope you enjoy it!

I’ve actually really enjoyed Vast Error for what it’s given, the focus on characters and explaining the world and giving out these little bits of information we’d not otherwise get suits a very good niche for me, as it’s a lot of what I wanted and was most dissapointed about not getting in Homestuck, I don’t want another Beta Troll scenario where half the cast is irrelevant or one dimensional, they’re not only making the cast interesting, but they’ve got an entire host of side characters that are interesting or intriguing in their own rights, it’s been fantastic so far!

Thank you so much! I think you’ve really hit the nail on the head with what we’re trying to accomplish here and I’m glad it’s been as wonderful for you as it has been for me to make it. I really just want to make a story where character and development takes precident, and VE through both literal and figurative means within itself makes that happen. In the end, it’s very much about catharsis. Both for me and the team, and the readers.

Honestly the sheer number and prevalence of side characters really give Vast Error a pretty unique feel as a troll-based fanventure.

We really wanted to make Repiton feel a lot more lived in and notable as a (dare i say) society. In order for the world to have stakes and for you to care, you can’t just worldbuild, you also have to give a reason as to why you care about this world being saved. Cosmic conundrums are always fascinating but I wouldn’t really call them «relatable», so we instead opted for an ensemble troll cast. Which also works against a point that The Exemplar and even White Noise himself brought up: that the Main 12 are the most important and the only ones that matter. This is fundamentally untrue, and always something that bothers me about «chosen one» narratives. What makes the others any LESS special, realistically? What makes one life greater than the other? These are things I want to explore.

The coolest thing about this cast though it’s one of the things that recognizes VE’s past and present best. With the characters being a mix of old faces from prior VE drafts (Sestro, Hamifi, Turnin, Moon Boy), background character designs turned into fully realized people (Edolon, Pozzol, Talald, Rodere, Sabine, Glomer, Cinare, Seinru, Noxious, Endari, Necron, Oricka), and characters made by VE team members and fans (Rypite, Sirage, Gerbat, Cretas, Secily, Yeshin, Mshiri, Bytcon, Husske, Raurou, Cadlys, Crytum, Hayyan). It’s a manner of still keeping it our own but also allowing for expansion and the fan integration that MSPA was built upon. A fine compromise if I do say so myself.

Given the last update I really don’t like what’s going to happen in the next one in Tazsia’s flashback.

Especially given how it all ties together with what transpired between her and Arcjec.

The world is vast and full and wonders, no matter what they tell you.

A word to the wise here, the sort of «they hate us because they ain’t us» attitude is something that’s deeply damaging. Even someone with preconceived biases or past history can offer insight. There’s always going to be people operating it bad faith out there, it’s best not to get worked up over it. Best case scenario, you learn something or they learn something, worst case scenario, they look like an idiot for having posted something emotionally driven and poorly thought out and you waste some of your time. Not saying that you are sounding like that, but god it’s a bad road to go down so better safe than sorry.

This feels like something I should address, one abrasive e-funnyman to another. You can’t bottle up things under a layer of apathy forever. Sooner or later that apathy is going to come out, leaking it’s disgusting sticky apathy fluids all over the place. It’s best to take action, or you’ll end up regretting it in the future. Let me just throw my rusty chipped two cents into the ring. The Vast Error readerbase has gotten big, a lot bigger than you expected certainly, you said it yourself. So now’s probably the time to rethink how you approach community interaction, how the community acts and your attachment to it. Hit up some people you trust or otherwise respect in private and take what they have to say on board, or hell even me. I got time.

As for other criticisms people have brought up, I’d posit a lot of it simply boils down to writing inexperience. Inexperience isn’t always a bad thing mind you, it comes with enthusiasm and new ideas, yet it’s still your first big project all the same. Draw from a pool of inspiration, read more from various sources. Fiction, art studies, analysis of stories, whatever. Vast Error draws a lot from cyberpunk and late 20th century sci fi with some fantasy inspirations, hell I could probably come up with a recommended reading list for that shit. Another huge one is history. Worldbuilding needs a foundation of history, the rise and fall of societies, how power dynamics function and groups of people change over time, and all the fun stuff like the wars and weird improbable things that happen and change the course of existence forever. So I’m just saying, an aspiring writer’s creative horizons have to be broad, and you can’t exact go too broad with wanting to improve, y’know?

I read it and I think it’s not for me (I’m more of an action-y pew pew game mechanics with drama on the side kinda guy) but still masterfully crafted all the same and I can see how someone could like it.

I didn’t expect there to be actual hentai in the Hentai Dungeon though :(

above nothing else, i feel like most people should be able to enjoy the character design in vast error, even if they don’t like anything else about vast error. there’s a familiarity of the characters being trolls while also being a completely unique feel to all of the characters that’s separates them from homestuck’s cast, at least to me.

Yeah I’ll always like the effort put into designign unique characters and stuff, even though I think a few of the side characters were fan submissions, those are still obv unique and neat
Also it helps that half of the characters make me do that cursed emoji face + heavy breathing, fuck, some of these corporate trolls got me feeling real capitalistic if u get my drifyt

8/10 too much vasted and error.

In full sincerity I am really very enthusiastic about all of this. I think VE is a great answer to Homestuck and is a very of-its-time piece of fiction that captures what young people are going through right now. The themes of surveillance, the world dying around them, how said world presses in on the characters with clear and focused intent compared to the unfeeling, convoluted, ambivalent reality of Paradox Space… it’s good stuff.

There have been very fair criticisms of its tendency to grab cultural artifacts thoughtlessly (originally naming the compecados Wendigos, Murrit’s dialogue) But I believe Heather, Austin & Co are empathetic enough people to work on this element and interrogate it. Vast Error is ultimately worked on by a broad range of people who want to come together to make something good, and I believe in them.

Fully admitting to my bias and nepotism though, (inb4 ethics in MSPFA journalism) I know these folks on a personal level and I have all the expected personal attachments to them, they are friends to me before they are Producers of Content. But putting that aside and trying to remain objective; the work has flaws, maybe even the occasional Severe Flaw, but there is something special going on here, and it is worth a shot if you think it may be for you.

I will be responding to folks again later tonight after I take care of a few other things. I have a burger waiting for me this time, and it is beckoning.

NOTE: I have «house sauce» on this burger. All sauces that are like «special» or «den» or «all-american» or whatever, it’s always 1000 island. Do not be fooled.
