Whirlpool dishwasher displaying an error code or flashing lights? If your dishwasher detects an error in the system, it will show an the appropriate error, the lights flash, will blink, or a fault code will show. When lights are blinking your dishwasher is identifying a specific fault. The light blinking sequence will indicate which part on your Whirlpool dishwasher needs to be replaced.

Some Whirlpool dishwashers display an error code by flashing the clean Light on the display in a pattern. If your Whirlpool dishwasher does NOT have a digital display, the clean Light will flash the function code then the clean Light will pause for 2 seconds and then will flash the problem code.  You need to count the number of times the clean light flashes to find out the error code on your Whirlpool dishwasher. As an example: If the clean light flashes 5 times followed by 2 flashes (5-2) then this error is showing the function code = “Door issue” and the problem code is “The door switch is in question”. The flashing light patterns repeat again after a 5 second pause. NOTE: The control panel console is fully non-functional when an error code is flashing.

View All Whirlpool Dishwasher Spares

If you have a Whirlpool dishwasher that’s not running as usual it’s safe to say it’s probably developed a fault. Looking into the problem yourself may appear to be daunting, but if there’s an error code on your dishwasher display or the start button light is flashing your helpful machine is letting you know the area causing the problem.

Identifying Whirlpool Dishwasher Error Codes

Whirlpool dishwasher fault codes are usually a two-digit code beginning with F or a flashing start button light which pauses intermittently. For Whirlpool dishwasher flashing light codes, you’ll need to count the number of flashes between each pause to establish which code your dishwasher is displaying.

These Whirlpool dishwasher codes apply to most Whirlpool models and some other dishwasher brands too.

Read on to discover which part of your dishwasher is causing the fault code to display and how to fix your Whirlpool dishwasher problems.

Safety First! Please make sure that you’ve switched off your appliance and disconnected it from the mains before beginning any repair.

Whirlpool dishwasher error codes list

F1 (or 1 flash) – Temperature sensor

The temperature sensor in your machine has detected the water temperature is too low (below -3°C) or too high (above 85°C). It could be the case that the water coming into your machine is an unusual temperature, but it’s most likely that the NTC temperature sensor has failed and will need replacing.

Josh explains in more detail about dishwasher leaking problems and also heating problems relating to the below error in our video:

F2 (or 2 flashes) – Water leak

You most likely have a leak in your machine if you see this error. You’ll need to drain the base, find the leak and repair it to fix the problem.

F3 (or 3 flashes) – Heating System

If your dishwasher is not heating or is heating too slowly this could be caused by:

—          A faulty heating element – the most likely cause of the issue

—          A faulty temperature sensor

—          A faulty connection between the control board and the heater (check the relay connections on the PCB)

F4 (or 4 flashes) – Drainage system

This error indicates that your machine has failed to drain as expected. A blocked or faulty drain pump or hose could be the cause of this fault. If so the pump will need cleaning or replacing. The fault could also be caused by the machine siphoning if the hose is to low, an optical sensor or very occasionally the control board.

For more on dishwasher draining problems, see our video:

F5 (or 5 flashes) – Rotor blocked

There is a problem with the rotor part of the wash motor (the part which moves). You may need to replace your dishwasher motor if this fault occurs.

F6 (or 6 flashes) — Not filling

Water is not entering your dishwasher as expected. The inlet valve which lets water into your machine could need replacing or there could be a blockage in the inlet hose. There may also be a problem with the water supply to your machine (if the tap connecting to the hose is turned off or low for example) or the flow meter which monitors the water coming into your machine may have failed.

F7 (or 7 flashes) – Flow Meter

F7 relates specifically to the flow meter, but as well as a faulty flow meter it could be caused by similar issues to F6 including:

—          A blockage or kink in the water inlet hose

—          A faulty water inlet valve

—          A closed water tap

F8 (or 8 flashes) – Water Level

If there is too much water detected in your dishwasher this error code will appear. The water level issue could be caused by:

—          A blocked filter preventing your machine from draining

—          A problem with the system that lets water into your machine

—          Excessive foaming in the machine (possibly caused by adding too much detergent)

—          A spray pump fault caused by a problem with the main wash motor

F9 (or 9 flashes) – Continuous water inlet

A dishwasher continuously fills with water for one of two most likely reasons. Either the inlet valve is faulty and is not closing or there is a short circuit on the main control board. The valve or control board may need to be replaced.

F0 (or 10 flashes) – Sensor failure

You may see this error code appear if you have run a test cycle to diagnose your dishwasher. (To see how to run a test cycle, consult your appliance manual; if you don’t have your manual you may be able to download it from our library.)  You will need to test the sensors in your machine and their connections with the main control board to get to the bottom of this fault.

There may be sensors in your machine for water temperature, input flow or even water level/flow pressure.

FA (or 11 flashes) – Optical water indicator (turbidity)

This fault indicates an error with the sensor in your machine that monitors the water cleanliness. If this sensor detects ‘dirty water’ the machine may repeat a rinse cycle. If dirt has blocked the senor it may also show this error. Check the sensors and its connections with the control panel will need checking. There is also a chance excessive foaming of detergent in your dishwasher could give this sensor an inaccurate reading.

FB (or 12 flashes) – Motorised diverter valve

The dishwasher diverter valve controls the flow of water to the upper dishwasher spray arm. If it is faulty it will need checking and possibly replacing.

FC (or 13 flashes) – Water hardness sensor

Water hardness sensors monitor how hard the water is in your area and let you know when to add dishwasher salt to combat hard water. If the Salt reservoir is filled and adjusted correctly then the sensor in your machine may be faulty and you’ll need to fit a new one.

Establishing the fault with your dishwasher is only half the job! Once you’ve finished your Whirlpool dishwasher troubleshooting, you’ll need to replace a part in your machine in most cases to get it working well again. You’ll find the information to source and fit your spare part on our site including help finding the model number of your appliance and step by step how to guides for a variety of dishwasher repairs. So we highly recommend fixing your dishwasher yourself to save a fair amount of money (and get a great sense of achievement)!

Whirlpool Dishwasher Error Codes

Due to the wide variety of different Whirlpool dishwashers available the error/fault codes will be displayed differently depending on which model you own. If your dishwasher has an LCD display then the fault code will be displayed like below.

If your dishwasher just has a row of lights then the fault code will be indicated by the start light flashing several times, waiting for a few seconds then flashing the sequence again. For example if your dishwasher had the fault F7, the start light would flash seven times, pause, then flash seven times again, etc.

Fault Code F1 or One Flash

Cause: Problem with the NTC (temperature sensor) or thermistor. This fault code will appear if the sensor is reading a temperature outside of the dishwashers operating window (-3°C to +85°C). The most common cause is a faulty NTC.

Action: In most cases replacing the NTC will solve the problem. In winter it is possible that the dishwasher has frozen (and thus the NTC isn’t faulty – correctly detecting that it is too cold for the dishwasher to operate). You can remedy this by adding some warm (not boiling water) to the dishwasher to thaw it out, then try running a program again.

Fault Code F2 or Two Flashes

Cause: A water leak has been detected

Action: In most cases you’ll need to find origin of the leak and repair as necessary. As long as the leak continues to be detected the water valve won’t open, preventing the dishwasher from filling with water. If there is no evidence of a leak then the error could potentially be caused by a faulty float switch, inlet valve or drain pump.

Fault Code F3 or Three Flashes

Cause: Issue with water heating system. This fault will be displayed if the dishwasher is unable to heat water to the required temperature with 25 minutes of the start of the wash cycle.

Action: This fault is typical of a heating element failure, so check that first using a multimeter possible. Other possible culprits include the NTC and thermostat.

Fault Code F4 or Four Flashes

Cause: The dishwasher isn’t draining.

Action: Check the filters in the dishwasher basin for any blockages and this could be a simple fix. If that doesn’t help then the problem most likely lies with the drain pump which is either blocked or faulty.

Fault Code F5 or Five Flashes

Cause: Spray arms are blocked/clogged or otherwise malfunctioning.

Action: Spray arms are easily removed so take them out of the dishwasher and wash in the sink to clear out any gunk (using descaler should help shift any stubborn debris). Whilst doing this run the dishwasher on a short program without the spray arms to clear any further blockages.

Fault Code F6 or Six Flashes

Cause: The fault occurs when the dishwasher does not detect any incoming water despite the water inlet valve being open.

Action: Check your water supply is on. Ensure the water inlet hose has no kinks or blockages. Beyond that you could be looking at a faulty inlet valve or flow meter.

Fault Code F7 or Seven Flashes

Cause: Fault with flow meter detected.

Action: Flow meter failure is not unusual on Whirlpool dishwashers so it may well require replacing (you’ll usually find it behind the right hand side panel). Before replacing the flow meter check the inlet valve and inlet hose to ensure this is not a simple water supply problem.

Fault Code F8 or Eight Flashes

Cause: Water Turbidity Fault. Your dishwasher is detecting that the turbidity of the water is too high, which basically means it is too dirty.

Action: Most models have both a mechanical water indicator and an optical water indicator to measure turbidity. Give everything a thorough clean around and below the filters in the dishwasher basin. You’ll find the optical indicator in the dishwasher basin (it looks like a small black grid) – give it a gentle clean, taking care not to damage it.

Fault Code F9 or Nine Flashes

Cause: Water inlet is staying open (dishwasher is overfilling).

Action: Check the water inlet valve – is it jammed open for some reason? It may be defective and need replacing. If it seems OK then problem is likely being caused by a faulty control board instead.

Fault Code F0 or Ten Flashes

Cause: Sensor fault or failure. This code is only shown in the service test programme and thus it’s unlikely you’ll see it unless you’re a service engineer!

Fault Code FA or Eleven Flashes

Troubleshooting

First try the solutions suggested here. If you need further assistance or more recommendations that may help you to avoid a service call, visit whirlpool/com/product_help.

Dishwasher is not operating properly

  • Dishwasher does not run or stops during a cycle

It is normal for certain cycles to repeatedly pause for several seconds during the main wash. Is the door closed tightly and latched? Is the right cycle selected? Is there power to the dishwasher? Has a household fuse, blown or has a circuit breaker tripped? Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker. If the problem continues, call an electrician. Has the motor stopped due to an overload? The motor automatically resets itself within a few minutes. If it does not restart, call for service. Is the water shut-off valve (if installed) turned on?

  • The Clean light is flashing

Check the following:

  1. Is the overfill protection float able to move up and down freely? Press down to release.
  2. Be sure the water supply is turned on to the dishwasher. (This is very important following the new installation of your dishwasher.)
  3. Check for suds in the dishwasher. If foam or suds are detected by the dishwasher sensing system, the dishwasher may not operate properly or may not fill with water
  • Dishwasher will not fill

Is the overfill protection float able to move up and down freely? Press down to release.

  • Dishwasher seems to run too long

Try the 1 Hrr Wash cycle. Is the water supplied to the dishwasher hot enough? The dishwasher runs longer while heating water. Is the dishwasher cycle time within the cycle times? See cycle sections wash times. A delay automatically occurs in some wash and rinse cycles until the water reaches the proper temperature. This dishwasher is equipped with an optical sensor wash that detects water temperature, soil, and detergent amount. Wash cycles are adjusted based on the load sensing.

  • Water remains in the dishwasher

Is the cycle complete? Was the disposer knockout plug removed during installation?

  • White residue on the front of the access panel

Was too much detergent used? Is the brand of detergent making excess foam? Try a different brand to reduce foaming and eliminate buildup.

  • Odor in the dishwasher

Are dishes washed only every 2 or 3 days? Check and clean your filters regularly. See the table in the “Filtration System” section for “Recommended Time Interval to Clean Your Filter.” Does the dishwasher have a new plastic smell? Run a vinegar rinse as described in “Dishwasher Care.” To avoid odor, use affresh dishwasher and disposal cleaner tablet once a month or as needed for a fresher dishwasher as described in “Dishwasher Care.”

  • Condensation on the kitchen counter (built-in models)

Is the dishwasher aligned with the countertop? Moisture from the vent in the dishwasher console can form on the counter. Refer to the Installation Instructions for more information

  • Bottom rack does not fully slide into the dishwasher

Check to see if items loaded for Target Clean™ wash option have shifted. Reload to keep items from interfering with spray jets or spray arm.

Whirlpool Dishwasher Control panel

Dishes do not dry completely

  • Dishes do not dry completely

Did you use a rinse aid? Your dishwasher is designed to use rinse aid for good drying performance. Without rinse aid your dishes and dishwasher interior will have excessive moisture. The Heat Dry option will not perform as well without rinse aid.

Did you load your dishwasher to allow proper water drainage? Do not overload. Use a liquid rinse aid to speed drying. Are the plastics wet? Plastics often need towel drying. Is the rinse aid dispenser empty? Did you use an air-dry or energy saving dry option? Use a heated drying option for dryer dishes.

  • Excess moisture on racks and dishwasher interior

Check the rinse aid indicator to see that there is rinse aid in the dispenser.

Spots and stains on dishes

  • Spotting and filming on dishes

Sometimes there is a water/chemical reaction with certain types of glassware. This is usually caused by some combination of soft or softened water, alkaline washing solutions, insufficient rinsing, overloading the dishwasher, and the heat of drying. It might not be possible to avoid the problem, except by hand washing. To slow this process use a minimum amount of detergent but not less than 1 tbs (15 g) per load. Use a liquid rinse aid and underload the dishwasher to allow thorough rinsing. Silica film and etching are permanent and cannot be removed. Do not use heated drying.

  • Silica film or etching (silica film is a milky, rainbow-colored deposit; etching is a cloudy film)

  • White spots on cookware with nonstick finish

Has the dishwasher detergent removed cookware seasoning? Reseason cookware after washing it in the dishwasher.

  • Brown stains on dishes and dishwasher interior

Does your water have high iron content? Rewash dishes using 1 to 3 tsp (5 to 15 mL) of citric acid crystals added to the covered section of the detergent dispenser. Do not use detergent. Follow with a Normal wash cycle with detergent. If treatment is needed more often than every other month, the installation of an iron removal unit is suggested.

  • Black or gray marks on dishes

Are aluminum items rubbing dishes during washing? Disposable aluminum items can break down in the dishwasher and cause marking. Hand wash these items. Remove aluminum markings by using a mild abrasive cleaner.

  • Orange stains on plastic dishes or dishwasher interior

Are large amounts of tomato-based foods on dishes placed in the dishwasher? It may be necessary to use a stain removal product to remove stains from your dishwasher. Stains will not affect dishwasher performance.

Whirlpool Dishwasher Parts and Features

Noises

Surging sounds can occur periodically throughout the cycle while the dishwasher is draining.

Normal water valve hissing may be heard periodically, during the water fill.

A normal snap sound may be heard when the detergent dispenser opens during the cycle, and when the door is opened at the end of the cycle

  • Grinding, grating, crunching, or buzzing sounds

A hard object has entered the wash module (on some models). When the object is ground up, the sound should stop. If the noise persists after a complete cycle, call for service.

Dishwasher stops and starts

  • Numerous starts and stops

It is normal to hear numerous starts and stops throughout your entire cycle. These starts and stops are needed to provide optimal cleaning performance and energy savings

  • Depending on cycle selected

Depending on the cycle selected and the soil level sensed by the Optical Water Sensor (on some models), you will experience more starts and stops throughout the entire cycle.

Dishes are not completely clean

  • Food soil left on the dishes

Is the dishwasher loaded correctly? Check and clean your filters regularly. See the table in the “Filtration System” section for “Recommended Time Interval to Clean Your Filter.”

Did you choose the cycle that describes the most difficult soil in your dishwasher? If you have some items with heavier soils, use a heavier cycle. Is the water temperature too low? For best dishwashing results, water should be 120°F (49°C) as it enters the dishwasher.

Did you use the correct amount of fresh detergent? Use recommended dishwasher detergents only. Do not use less than 1 tbs (15 g) per load. Detergent must be fresh to be effective. Heavy soil and/or hard water generally require extra detergent.

Is detergent caked in dispenser? Use fresh detergent only. Do not allow detergent to sit for several hours in a wet dispenser. Clean dispenser when caked detergent is present. Is the pump or spray arm clogged by labels from bottles and cans?

Is the home water pressure high enough for proper dishwasher filling? Home water pressure should be 20 to 120 psi (138 to 828 kPa) for proper dishwasher fill. If you have questions about your water pressure, call a licensed, qualified plumber.

Are high suds slowing the wash arm? Do not use soap or laundry detergents. Use recommended dishwasher detergents only.

  • Dishes in the Target Clean wash area are not clean

Are the dishes loaded to face the Target Clean™ spray jets? Load soiled dish surfaces to face the back of the dishwasher toward the Target Clean™ spray jets. Tilt the dishes toward the back, so water can drain from surfaces and the lower spray arm can wash the item from below

Dishes are damaged during a cycle

Did you load the dishwasher properly? Load the dishes and glasses so they are stable and do not strike together from washing action. Minimize chipping by moving the rack in and out slowly.

Whirlpool dishwasher error codes

Whirlpool is the American brand of household appliances. It was established in the 1911. In the 1929, the company merged with Nineteen Hundred Washer Co. In the 1950, the company was named the Whirlpool Corporation.
In the 1989, the Europe Whirlpool company, which later came to belong only to Whirlpool Corporation, was created by the concerted efforts with Philips.
In its history, the Whirlpool Corporation has absorbed many other manufacturers and their brands, having strengthened its positions in the world market of household appliances.
The assortment of the Whirlpool production includes different household appliances, inter alia dishwashers.
But even the most reliable apparatus are breaking. In the case Whirlpool dishwasher not draining, refer for technical help to dishwasher repair shop Whirlpool. Whirlpool dishwasher problems can be different.
Thus for the case of whirlpool dishwasher won`t drain, a whirlpool dishwasher error codes table is presented below.

Basic fault codes dishwasher Whirlpool

Dishwashers manufactured by the U.S.-based multinational brand Whirlpool are well-known for their reliability and efficiency. Even the basic models that do not boast innovative features provide a choice of washing programs. There are compact and full-size models with different designs, capacity, and control panel.

FAULTS CAUSE SOLUTION
F1 NTC break
Temperature out of the normal value (-3°C till +85°C)
1. Temperature inside higher than +85°C
2. NTC defective (the NTC is the most common cause of this error and can be obtained from this link)
3. Dishwasher is frozen, less than -3°C
If the temperature is less than -3°C, fill the appliance with a cup of warm water to warm it up before you start it.
F2 Water Leakage
Water is in the bottom tray
Floater or float switch switches off the water valve and the electronic switches on the drain pump until pressure sensor reports that it is empty. There are numerous causes for this fault, but it all usually comes down to the fact that something, somewhere is leaking. To cure this you need to find the leak.
F3 Dishwasher Heating System Defective
Indicated after approximately 25 minutes of failure to reach operating temperature.
1. Heats too slowly (less than 1,5 °C in 10 min)
2. Water heater or heating element is defective (this is the most common cause of this issue and the heating element is available from this link)
3. Relays (RE2) on control board (CB) is defective
4. NTC — resistance fluctuation (the NTC or thermostat sensor, as noted above, can be found from this link)
Check the heating element first if you get this error.
F4 Dishwasher Draining Failure
Drain pump starts and after 4 min the machine detects that it is “not empty”
1. Drain pump defective
2. Siphon closed
3. Control board defective (very rare!)
4. OWl/WI defective (Optical sensors, if fitted, but most don’t have them)
The most common cause of this is either a blocked or defective drain pump. On that front you have two choices, you can either go with the genuine dishwasher drain pump from this link or, you can opt for a much, much cheaper compatible drain pump from this link.
F6 Water Tap Closed
Water valve is switched on but flow meter sends no impulses and the water indicator is off
1. Water inlet tap closed
2. Water inlet hose blocked
3. Water inlet valve defective (common enough issue but also check the flow meter in the side chamber, the water valve is here if required)
4. Flow meter detective
It is a very common issue with these dishwashers and the common flow meter is built into the side chamber which can be accessed by removing the right hand side panel (looking from the front of the dishwasher) and the commonly used spare part can be found from this link
F7 Flow Meter Failure
Water inlet valve is switched on and the water indicator is on.
1. Flow meter sends too few impulses (less than 10 imp. in 10 sec.)
2. Water tap closed during water inlet
3. Water inlet hose blocked
4. Water inlet valve defective
5. Flow meter defective
F8 Water Level Failure
Failures are supervised over the whole program. Mechanical water indicator WI Spray pump works, the WI switches more than 20 times in 2 minutes back
Optical Water Indicator
Always after the OWI — signal is missing the electrical components are turned off for 5 sec. If after the 5 sec. the OWl-Signal is still not present then it notes a failure F8. If, however, after the 5 sec the OWl-Signal is present, then the water-level is filled to 6 Ltr. and the electrical components are again turned on. After the OWl signal is missing for a second time note an F8 failure.
1. Water inlet defect? Should switch on after approximately a 1 litre intake of water
2. Filter blocked
3. Water foaming giving false reading
4. Pot has turned off and is filled with spray water
5. No stable spray pump working, main wash motor faulty
F9 Continuous Water Inlet
Water inlet valve is switched off, water indicator on, flow meter sends impulses (more than 10 imp. in 10 sec.)
1. Water inlet valve mechanically not closed
2. Triac on the control board permanently switched on. (short circuit)
Reaction: interval 30 sec. drain pump on / 20 sec. drain pump off in interval
The main control boards are model specific, if you want to buy one please contact us with the model number and the 12NC number from the rating plate just inside the door of the dishwasher to ensure that you get the correct one.

Whirlpool Generic dishwasher fault codes

Although dishwashers produced by the Fortune 500 corporation Whirlpool vary a lot, most of them have the same system of fault codes. Whirlpool VBL dishwasher fault codes

The Whirlpool dishwashers belonging to the VBL range vary in many respects, from capacity to design, and feature sets. What they have in common is the way the error codes are displayed in case of a minor or a major issue. The VBL models use either the “Start” LED or a sequence of light flashes repeated after a pause.

FAULTS CAUSE SOLUTION
F0 10 Flashes
Only use in test program, indicates sensor failure
This fault code should never be visible.
F1 1 Flash
NTC or thermistor open circuit
Usually it is exactly what it says and the NTC has failed.
F2 2 Flashes
Water leak detected
This will be a float switch in the base normally that has been activated due to a leak of some sort.
F3 3 Flashes
Heating system defective
Nine out of ten times this will be a faulty heater.
F4 4 Flashes
Failure to drain out
Drain pump blocked or faulty is usually the cause of this fault code being displayed.
F6 6 Flashes
No incoming water
Check the water is on and the supply is okay and then the water valve.
F7 7 Flashes
Flow meter failure
This is the small flow meter fitted to the fill matrix of the dishwasher.

These error code explanations can help you diagnose a problem with your Whirlpool HE dishwasher. For repair how-to help, visit the PartsDirect repair help section, which includes repair help for dishwashers, other major appliances, lawn and garden equipment, garage door openers, vacuum cleaners and more. Search for your model number to find a complete list of replacement parts for your dishwasher.

Digital display models show the error codes on the control panel.

Models without a digital display signal error codes by flashing the Clean light in a pattern unique to the error. The light first flashes the Function code, pauses for 2 seconds, and then flashes the Problem code. For example, 6 flashes followed by 1 flash (6-1) means «Inlet Water» function, «The electronic control doesn’t detect water entering the dishwasher tub» problem. After a 5-second pause, the light repeats the pattern.

The control console is disabled when an error code is flashing.

Stuck button on the user interface control

Check/Repair

Check all buttons on the user interface control for a response. If one or more of the buttons don’t work, unplug the dishwasher to disconnect electrical power and disconnect the user interface control wire harness. Reassemble the door with the user interface wire harness disconnected, but don’t close the door. Plug in the dishwasher and wait at least 7 seconds for the electronic control board to power up completely. Then close the door. If the electronic control no longer detects stuck buttons with the user interface wire harness unplugged, it will start the drain pump. If the drain pump runs, replace the user interface control. If the drain pump doesn’t run, then replace the electronic control board because it still detects stuck buttons with the user interface control unplugged.

OWI failed to calibrate or the drain hose check valve failed, allowing dirty water to backflow into the dishwasher

Check/Repair

Disconnect the dishwasher drain hose connection from the air gap or the garbage disposal if you have no air gap. Pour water through the drain hose to see if water backs up into the dishwasher tub. If so, replace the portion of the drain hose that connects to the drain pump because the check valve in that hose failed. If water doesn’t back up into the dishwasher through the drain hose, reconnect the hose and run the Service Diagnostics Test according to the instructions in the tech sheet. You should see low soil level indicated during the OWI test in the diagnostic mode. If you see high soil level during the OWI test, unplug the dishwasher and clean the OWI sensor. Reassemble the dishwasher and plug the dishwasher back in to restore electrical power. Run the diagnostic test cycle so the electronic control board will calibrate the OWI sensor on the next cycle. Run a normal wash cycle. If you still see the error code, replace the thermistor/OWI sensor.

Door switch failure

Check/Repair

This code appears if you don’t close the door within 4 seconds of pressing the Start/Resume button, or if the door latch assembly is broken. When starting a cycle, close the door within 4 seconds after pressing Start/Resume. If you can’t start the cycle and the code continues, then the door switch could be defective. Unplug the dishwasher to disconnect electrical power. Disassemble the door and check the door switch wire harness. Reconnect any loose wires or replace the wire harness if damaged. If the wire harness is okay, replace the door latch assembly.

Control detects door not opening

Check/Repair

The electronic control board expects to see the door open between cycles or the dishwasher won’t start the next time you try to start a new cycle. If you didn’t open the door between cycles, cancel the cycle. Open and shut the door, and then start a new cycle. If the cycle still won’t start, then the door switch could be defective. Unplug the dishwasher, then plug it back in to simulate the door opening. If the cycle starts, replace the door latch assembly because the door switch isn’t detecting the door opening.

Won’t fill

Check/Repair

Check for an item stuck under the overfill float and remove it. If the overfill float sticks in the «up» position the dishwasher won’t fill. Unplug the dishwasher to disconnect electrical power and shut the water supply valve. Disconnect the water supply line from the water inlet valve and check the water inlet valve screen for clogs. Replace the water valve if you find the screen clogged because debris from the clog can get into the valve body, causing the valve to stick open and possibly flood your kitchen. If the screen is clear, place the end of the water supply line in a shallow pan and briefly open the water supply valve to see if water flows from the supply line. If water doesn’t flow, have a plumber repair the water supply to your dishwasher. If the water flows okay, check the wiring connections on the water inlet valve and reconnect any loose wires or replace the wire harness if damaged. If the wires are okay, you may need to replace the water inlet valve or the electronic control board.

Water inlet valve failure

Check/Repair

Unplug the dishwasher to disconnect electrical power. Remove the bottom front access panel and toe panel. Check the wire harness connections on the water inlet valve. Reconnect any loose wires. Replace the wire harness if damaged. If the wire harness connections are okay, check the resistance of the water inlet valve using a multimeter. You should measure around 1,400 ohms of resistance through the water inlet valve. If you measure infinite resistance, replace the water inlet valve. If the problem continues, replace the electronic control board.

Suds or air are in the water pump

Check/Repair

Check for sudsy water. If you see excessive suds, try to drain the dishwasher by cancelling the cycle. The drain pump will run for 3 minutes. If the drain pump can’t drain the sudsy water, drain the water by hand or use a wet/dry shop vacuum to remove the water. Check the detergent dispenser and replace if it’s damaged. Use only dishwasher detergent in the dishwasher. Using regular dish soap in the dishwasher causes excessive suds. If you don’t see excessive suds, check the water fill level in the tub because low water level causes air in the pump. The water level should just touch the bottom of the overfill float mushroom. If you find the water level too low, check for bowls or containers that flipped over during the cycle that could be holding water. Load items so they don’t flip over during the cycle and cause low water level. If you didn’t find bowls or containers flipped over and holding water, then a defective water inlet valve could cause the low water level. Unplug the dishwasher to disconnect electrical power and close the water supply valve. Disconnect the water supply line from the water inlet valve and check the water inlet valve screen for clogs. Replace the water valve if you find the screen clogged because debris from the clog can get into the valve body, causing the valve to stick open and possibly flood your kitchen. If the screen is clear, place the end of the water supply line in a shallow pan and briefly open the water supply valve to see if the water flows from the supply line. If water doesn’t flow, have a plumber repair the water supply to your dishwasher. If the water flows okay, check the wiring connections on the water inlet valve and reconnect any loose wires or replace the wire harness if damaged. If the wires are okay, you may need to replace the water inlet valve.

  • Dishes are not dry

Noises

  • Surging sounds

Surging sounds can occur periodically throughout the cycle while the dishwasher is draining.

  • Valve hissing

Normal water valve hissing may be heard periodically, during the water fill.

  • Snapping sound

  • Chipping of dishes

Did you load the dishwasher properly? Load the dishes and glasses so they are stable and do not strike together from washing action. Minimize chipping by moving the rack in and out slowly.

Worst customer service I have ever seen. I have been waiting on a part for my dishwasher since before Thanksgiving. I have sat on hold for 2 or more hours. They cannot connect you to a supervisor, you just continue to wait on hold. They cannot give an eta for the part that has supposedly been in production since before Thanksgiving. I get told one thing, then when I call back for an update 2 weeks later that person has no idea what Im talking about. I will tell you one thing, if you do not want a headache, I suggest you buy another product!! I can guarantee, I will let everyone I know and never purchase Whirlpool again if this is not resolved this week! After doing my research, this part should be recalled. It is a big issue with this very expensive dishwasher.

We have an 8-year-old built-in Whirlpool Estate. It is probably as basic a model as you can get. It has been 100% reliable, and cleans the dishes well, even without rinsing. We do not buy expensive premium dishwasher detergents, either. So far, we have required no repairs. Basic features—heavy wash, normal wash, pots and pans. This dishwasher is standard (not extra large.) This is not a fancy dishwasher—just white. It is what matches the rest of the appliances. We have been lucky regarding the performance of such an inexpensive dishwasher. We paid about $250 for it.

My Whirlpool dishwasher is not old. It has hardly been used, and the board is bad. My washing machine, a duet, is not old, and the knob to turn it on broke. I am returning the knob to Whirlpool. Perhaps they can duct tape it and make it work on another machine and make big dollars on someone else that buys their junk. This is the LAST piece of junk that I will ever buy with a Whirpool name on it.

We bought the dishwasher as part of our major kitchen remodel. After 1 year, 10 months of successful operation, the wash motor failed. We are now faced with paying about 1/3 of the cost of a new unit, after less than 2 years. I dont expect new appliances to last forever, but less than 2 years is ridiculous. I would definitely not recommend this product to anyone.

We purchased a top of the line (we thought) Whirlpool stainless dishwasher

We purchased a top of the line (we thought) Whirlpool stainless dishwasher 15 months ago from HHGregg. All was fine until 2 weeks ago — it produced a burning smell and was making a funny noise. We had it looked out. The motor is burning out. I called Whirlpool and explained the issue. There is nothing they can do. It is over 12 months. Really? They cant stand behind their product? I understand if it was a small part or such but an entire motor burning out in just over a year? I know that not all products can be perfect, some times mistakes slip through the line. I guess it was silly of me to expect a company in todays age to stand behind their name and product. Obviously, with this company, it is buyer beware.

In the last year, I have had to put in two sets of parts to my Whirlpool water heater (thermocouple) within three months in between each malfunction. Now the hot water is out again, and I need to have a plumber come and reapply new parts to the hot water heater. Whirlpool is refusing to send new parts to the less than a year old hot water heater until they speak with my plumber. It was purchased in December 2011. I am a disabled senior citizen, and we have not had hot water in over a week. Meanwhile, the weather is in the teens and has been snowing. I live alone and have not been able to wash dishes, take showers or mop my floor. Being a diabetic, cleanliness is very important to maintain good health. Living on Social Security, I cannot afford to replace my water heater parts every few months and my health cannot afford to not have hot water. Model number for this Whirlpool water heater is N30T61-303; the product number is 0733315.

My family purchased a Whirlpool stainless steel dishwasher at Lowes for around $500. We were replacing a very old GE dishwasher which was so loud you had to leave the room anytime you started it because you couldnt even talk over it. We love the new Whirlpool dishwasher. It is so quiet we thought it was broken at first because we couldnt hear it running and even though it cleans exceptionally well we still sometimes have to look to see that the light is on to know that its actually running. The whole family agrees this may be one of the best purchases weve ever made. The only con I could think of is my son and I put the dishwasher in ourselves and this is the first one weve ever done and the instructions werent as clear so we had to redo the piping of the waterlines a couple of times to figure out in what order to be done. But everything hooked up correctly and worked immediately without a problem. Couldnt be happier.

Everyone has been impressed with how quiet my Whirlpool Gold Series dishwas

Everyone has been impressed with how quiet my Whirlpool Gold Series dishwasher was and how clean the dishes came out, but that didnt last but 3 short years. In the life of a dishwasher, 3 years should be less than a third of the life expediency. I purchased a 3 year protection plan from Sears only to find out that it included the year you get the new appliance, so it just added 2 years. Just my luck. I have bragged and bragged and bragged on this dishwasher because it was quiet and cleaned so well, but now I know that was premature because it should have last much longer. I sure didnt get my moneys worth.

The wife also uses Cascade liquid dishwashing soap which seems to get the dishes really clean. Rinsing before we stick them in probably doesn’t hurt, but overall, we are very pleased. Control board was replaced a couple times since we bought house. We just put up with it. The tub has a manufacturers defect in bottom where the plastic is so thin it finally cracked and over time water trickling out went to wall. Then ruined an area in finished basement ceiling. I took the Sears salesmans suggestion and bought a high-end quiet dishwasher. It worked wonderfully until it sprung a major leak. Computer told me the phone # to call. It took a week for the Sears repairman to come out and $79 fee to just look at it. He said the fitting between the sump and the pump came off and flooded water over the electric motor. Electric motor is shot! Cost to repair is over $400 and a 3-week wait!!! When and if a new motor is installed, only then do we know if the computer is also fried. This was a high-end dishwasher. Factory warranty just ran out. Repairman said this is a common problem with this model. DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL.

Perhaps I am fortunate, but when I read complaints regarding products on the Consumer Affairs site, it makes me wonder because I never have any problems whatsoever with anything I buy. The only time was with a cheap $20 dvd player which lasted just a year. I was given a 10 year old whirlpool fridge 7 years ago. It still works great. Very cold freezer and great features such as frost free freezer. Also Whirlpool Estate budget line dishwasher, washer and dryer ten years ago. No problems! Why do people spend thousands on refrigerators, washers, dryers, and dishwashers? Just buy the basics. It is not important to buy french door refrigerators, dishwashers with stainless-steel interiors, washers/dryers on pedestals and the like. You are only impressing shallow people. All in all, I will always purchase no-frills Whirlpool appliances. They are the best! And you can be like me and have no credit card bills and plenty of money in the bank with the result of low stress.

The cost of fixing this lemon and then buying an extended warranty for the repair (which they recommend) will make this a $1000 piece of garbage. They dont stand behind their defective products. Ill never buy another one again.

We purchased a Whirlpool Dishwasher from the Home Depot, it was installed 3-28-2015, less than 30 days ago. On 4-21-2015 the dishwasher stopped working. I called Home Depot expecting a replacement; but we were told you have 48 hours; you need to contact Whirlpool, due to the CRAP warranty. I called Whirlpool, we were told that a TECH would need to come out and address. They came today, ** , told us that the Motor is bad. (NOTE I havent made a payment on this dishwasher). So we called Whirlpool, expecting they would replace. I spoke to ** who advised me they would not replace, only repair. I explained this is unacceptable for a new product. I demanded to speak to her Manager; Spoke to ** who said the same. I asked to speak to her manager, his name is ** , but HE DOES NOT DEAL WITH THE CONSUMERS, this is beneath his job class I was told. So NOW I have no choice but to have this Dishwasher repaired; it will take over 2 weeks to get the part. I just dont understand how this is good Customer service. It is the worst I have ever experienced.

I have a Whirlpool dishwasher that is under warranty. The dishwasher failed and Whirlpool service gave me a written report acknowledging their part had failed. It caused $20,000 worth of documented damage. Their adjuster came out after waiting for one month. I have a claim with them and no one contacts me. For a few weeks I was dealing with their legal dept and they said they were going to turn it over to the company that made the defect part. To which I advised them Whirlpool did the damage, I will deal only with them. Since then their legal dept has not answered one email. Whirlpool is trying to put the damage on another company rather than themselves. I have heard from NO ONE. I bought a Whirlpool dishwasher and their tech and their adjuster confirm the damage. Now here I sit one month later, cabinets destroyed, floor destroyed and garage ceiling as well as kitchen walls destroyed and at one point Whirlpool says maybe you should put it through your homeowners, they would pay you faster. I say Whirlpool dishwasher did the damage, Whirlpool should pay. WHIRLPOOL BUYER BEWARE!!!!! ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY CONTACT ME AT **.

In January 2016 we ordered a Whirlpool Dishwasher through Home Depot. First, Whirlpool delivered the wrong dishwasher and the installer took my old one away — leaving minimal options to correct the problem quickly. Home Depot did not make the order Model # error but they did compensate for the error. Now, with 18 months of very low use (2 in household — prewashing all the dishes) the pump on the dishwasher is gone. Before posting this review I contacted Whirlpool via email. Two weeks later I had a phone message and I returned the call only to wait for 30 minutes to get through to a customer service agent who could offer absolutely no solutions or compensation for their poor quality product or service. There needs to be a zero on the scale of STARS to reflect Whirlpools overall quality.

In 2008, we also bought a Whirlpool 40 gallon gas hot water heater with flame lock, Model #BFG14040T3NOV. We too purchased from Lowes. The plumber was here yesterday to replace the thermostat for the third time in 4 years. We also suffered through cold showers, warming water for dishes and sponge baths. We are in our 60s and are worn out arguing with these people. If there should be a class action law suit, you can count us in. It is not right to have such a faulty product out there by Whirlpool. This is still America, right?

I love the look and performance of my Whirlpool Dishwasher. It could be a bit quieter, but overall I have no complaints. My washer was already installed in my home when I purchased it and I must say, it helps when the family gets together and you don’t feel like washing the dishes. The dual chamber pod holder is great if you need to use and the heat function works wonderful. I don’t have the problem of the left over water that a lot of dishwashers leave behind and no spots!

In 1994 we built a new home and we used only Whirlpool Appliances. In July 2006 we replaced all the appliances with another Whirlpool products, although they were still working including the microwave. After two years the microwave stop working, replaced it with another Whirlpool microwave and the second one stop working last night (July 2014). I noticed the quality of all their products went down including, Dishwasher, Washing Machine, Refrigerator, etc. The dishwasher heating element start to decompose and I replaced it. The washing machine get stuck and the water never stop creating a major flood in the house. The refrigerator door seal torn apart. I decided not to buy any more Whirlpool products.

Brand new Whirlpool dishwasher letting steam out ruining cabinets. Whirlpool admitted this has happened before. ** sent 3 different service repair companies to my house and all 3 told me the parts they recommended from Whirlpool was not going to fix problem. They finally after 3 different repairmen agreed to refund dishwasher. I requested they hire someone to give estimate on my kitchen cabinets. It was their product that done damage and I live in rural area and no one wants the job of restaining. If the cabinet is replaced it is expensive. Granite counters have to be removed and placed back, sink etc. I requested 3000.00 or Whirlpool send someone to give estimate. This has been dragging on for 2 months and still cant use dishwasher. Is that too much to ask for? This has been a nightmare and Whirlpool should be embarrassed. So many emails and messages and most of the time they are unreturned

I bought a new house in Hattiesburg with a Whirlpool dishwasher that is loud. It runs normally but when you open it the dishes are just as dirty as when you put them in if not worse since it will spray any residue from the bottom to the top shelf. I have taken it out and inspected all lines and such but can find nothing wrong to the naked eye. Thus I’ve got dirty dishes that must soak since the drying cycle retakes grime back on and then be rewashed.

In June 2003, I purchased a Whirlpool Gold Conquest Side-by-Side satina finish refrigerator (Model Number: GAS6SHAXLL03; Serial Number: SP1452552). The ice-maker has always had freezing up issues which I never complained to the company about. It has made weird noises (nothing major) but was already out of warranty. I paid $1,600-1,700 for it. I did not have the money to pay for repairs and I am sure that the repairman would have never found the problem. Two days ago, there was an electrical smell in the house. After an hour or two, it started getting stronger and stronger so my husband looked at the fridge. There was smoke pouring at the back of it so he pulled it away from the wall and we unplugged it. Surprisingly, the plug was not hot. Had I not been home, it could have caught fire, burned the house down and killed my dog! I am furious about this. When I called, Whirlpool says, That model is not under a recall. Would you like me to transfer you to service for repair? Really? Those big corporations dont care! There needs to be a recall on this because I have seen this same problem many times on blogs and forums. Well, guess what, I used to be a Whirlpool fan, not anymore! Now, I went and purchased a new refrigerator, and the brand name is Samsung! I recently bought a Samsung front loading washer and dryer and they are great. It looks like the Whirlpool dishwasher in my kitchen will be next! I bet Samsung makes a nice dishwasher.

I purchased 5 Whirlpool appliances when I moved into a new home approximately 5 years ago. The selection buttons on the plastic panels on the front of 3 (dishwasher, washer and dryer) out of the 5 appliances has either broken completely through or are in the process of breaking through, leaving an ugly appearance on the front of the appliances. When inquiring if I could replace these panels, I was told that one (dishwasher) would cost me $100.00. I believe that the structure of these panels has been extremely poorly manufactured. Why would you put perforation around each button? It is obvious that they would push through. What can Whirlpool do for me?

We purchased this dishwasher (Gold Dishwasher WDF60SADB) because of its low 49-decibel rating. It goes over 60 decibels regularly and occasionally up to 70 during operation (not including drain noises which cannot be controlled by the dishwasher). We used a tablet app to confirm. Decibels are not linear, they are exponential. 70 decibels is what your average shower or dishwasher sounds like. 50 is about as quiet as a refrigerator. You have to talk over this dishwasher. And yes there was a big price difference between it and Whirlpools next loudest rated washer.Whirlpools customer service says they will not replace or repair based on sound ever, only for functional failure. Bottom line, dont pay any attention to Whirlpool sound ratings. They dont stand by them and do not consider gross overages a defect. Fortunately the retailer (Lowes) does stand by what they sell and will trade for any other machine by any other manufacturer. We have only good things to say about Lowes in this process. This machine arrived Wednesday, and we pick a replacement Sunday. It will not be a Whirlpool. I will never buy a Whirlpool anything again. We said it will do X but we dont care if a brand new one wont is no way to do business.

I purchased a dishwasher and hooked it up. The reason I install products myself is I dont like people in my house. I dont know if they are there to help or inventory what they plan to rob from me later. It did not drain so I called Whirlpool who said that I probably hooked it up wrong. Whirlpool said that they would send a service man but if it was hooked up wrong I would have to pay for the service. The service man did arrive and had tattoos all over his neck and arms. (A tear drop would have confirmed that he was a murderer). The machine was hooked up correctly, the water pump was not working at all. The service company that Whirlpool contracted took 3 day to order the part. Yes three day to even order the part. Then another 10 days to get the part in. I called Whirlpool and they did not seem to care at all. My thought is, I am out $599 plus tax, and I have to wait 2 weeks to get my machine fixed, plus I have to take hours off work to wait for the service man and now I have to worry about the service man breaking into my house and robbing me and Whirlpool doesnt care. They should have to pay for the time I was off work and for the interest I lost on the money not being in my account during that two weeks. Whirlpool didnt care at all though. Otherwise, I would have gone to Sears, Lowes, etc. On 8/16/12, another repairman from The Appliance Man, Albany will be here Monday. I purchased dishwasher model #GU2800XTVT0 in May of 2009. Today, it leaked water all over and damaged my floor. My husband pulled the dishwasher out of the cabinet and found that the motor had fallen off. It did not have a bracket to hold it in place and worked loose, which then disconnected a hose. I called the customer service but they wont do anything because it is beyond the 12 month warranty. It only lasted slightly more than two years. The unit has performed as I had hoped. I wanted a quiet appliance that performed well, and could accommodate large plates and platters. I never put my knives, wooden utensils, pots or pans in my dishwasher so that was never an issue. I use 1 of 5 cycles available, 1 of 4 options available. Why use something other than hot water? The delay option is used often since I have a tendency to forget to turn it on, but I never let it run if someone is not home. The time left clock is also helpful, but dont count on it being really accurate. The start/resume, delay and cancel options are often used. I used the rinse option once with disappointing results. The silverware caddy is a little small, or my silverware is too large. I do not put any pots, pans or knives in, everything else fits fine because its a tall unit. So tall in fact, that the door comes out much farther than earlier units. Im still getting used to that. The front is brushed stainless with a black plastic control panel, nothing special here. My favorite options are delay and time left. Never have used the heat to dry option. We have low humidity and Ive never had the need to dry them immediately.

Purchased a home recently that had a Whirlpool dishwasher installed within

Purchased a home recently that had a Whirlpool dishwasher installed within it. Havent lived here for more than 2 weeks. Go to use the dishwasher a week ago and the dishwasher wont turn on. Its brand new! We tried resetting the breaker and all the tricks on the website page. So we called Whirlpool to have them send someone out and diagnose the problem… a week later. The appliance repair man comes out and says its not receiving the proper voltage for the dishwasher to run. So I contact the electric company that installed the electric wires within the home and they came out the next day to check their work. The electrician found that there was the proper voltage coming into the lines for the dishwasher to run and in fact it is the dishwasher. So at this point Im back to square one and called Whirlpool again. At this point, I just wanted them to replace the dishwasher with a new one (same model, no upgrade) since it hasnt even been 30 days of owning the thing and its already having issues. I havent even used it once. I didnt think I was crazy for asking for a new one. Especially when the problem seems to be electrically related. They tell me another person has to come back out and deem the product unrepairable for them to exchange the product for a new one. They tell me its going to be yet again another week for someone to come deem it repairable or not. But wait heres a 75 dollar Visa gift card for your inconvenience. How about you spend the 75 dollars on hiring a technician to come fix it today? Had a similar problem with a LG appliance and they sent me a new one with no hassle without even sending a tech out to see if it was repairable or not. Buyers beware! Dont waste your money on Whirlpool. Clearly they do not care about their customers. They would rather spend more money in technician fees than to just admit their product isnt functioning correctly and replace it.

Here in Brazil, we use to have a very good brand of durable and reliable refrigerators and home appliances called Brastemp, and I was a very happy, fidelized customer of theirs. The time came for me to move to my new house. I gave my old appliances away to friends and modeled my new kitchen with Brastemp products. What I didnt know then is that Whirlpool bought the brand in 2000 and was selling their appliances over the Brastemp brand since.Whirlpool is clearly selling disposable appliances here. My vacuum cleaner failed after a week. My brand new refrigerator and laundry machines failed weeks after the one-year warranty and the dishwasher sometimes heats up and tips the 20A circuit breaker (suggested by the manufacturer), which is only for the dishwasher. For my complete surprise, my old appliances are still functional in my friends house. I got my old dishwasher back and I had absolutely no problems since. The vacuum cleaner failed again, this time 5 months out of warranty. In all fail cases, the price to fix it was about 70% of the price of a new one, which I took as a sign to replace them for something else. Good job, Whirlpool! You bought a nice brand, trashed it and gave the finger to fidelized customers you acquired with the new brand by replacing quality products with built-in obsolescence others. What do you plan to do next? Whatever it is, dont count on me as a customer ever again.

I currently rent, and so when our literally 30-yr. old GE dishwasher broke down, our landlords went out and installed us a new Whirlpool Dishwasher. I was excited because FINALLY I would have clean dishes and a dishwasher that didnt leak a bucket of water all over the floor. Well, weve had it for about 6-8 months now and I have to say that I am not impressed. It is not as great as I thought itd be. First of all, my dishes still look cloudy (despite using various brands — even homemade — detergent). Second, one out of every three washes gives me still-dirty dishes (food still on them, even though I rinse before loading the dishes). Now, Im not talking about tough stuck-on, need a jack-hammer to remove food. Just normal food. Mostly it is oil, like if I had a plate that I had eaten French fries on and there was grease left behind that normal rinsing didnt remove. A new dishwasher SHOULD be able to clean that! Third, it guzzles Jet Dry liquid (or whatever rinse aid you use) like an alcoholic in a bar. I have used a BIG bottle in one month. One month. With the old 30 yr. old dishwasher, it took me around 2 YEARS to use a big bottle. And lastly, it takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R to wash a load. My old dishwasher took an hour tops — to rinse, wash, rinse, and dry — and it was 30 years old. This new Whirlpool takes 3 HOURS!!! I can literally hand-wash all of my dishes (and with a family of 4 thats a lot of dirty dishes in one day), sit them out to air dry, and take a nap and it take LESS TIME than using the dishwasher. The dishwasher has all the bells and whistles to make it look good, but trust me, if I could have had the 30-year old dishwasher rebuilt to newness, I would have begged my landlord to do that instead. Dont waste your money on Whirlpool appliances. I left another less than friendly review for my Whirlpool Cabrio washer (only 5 years old), if you care to see it. Learned my lesson, dont buy Whirlpool. So disappointed because they used to be (USED TO BE) a reputable dependable brand.

Weve been in this house for almost 4 years so the dishwasher (Whirlpool WDT790SAYM) is no older than that, maybe even 2.5 since I think I got it home in my CX-5 which is 2.5 years old. Anyway, never really had a problem with it and we run ours maybe once a day or twice in a row every 3 days. Last night I remember running a load and this morning noticed the dishes were dirty but the inside of the tub looked clean. So I plop another pod in and tried to run it again and sat there and watched it. It filled up with water but then nothing. After 20 minutes I opened the door and steam came out so the heater element was working and there was water at the bottom. I tried various things but nothing. Canceling still works. So either I try to get this fixed, or buy a new one. This wasnt a cheap dishwasher either. My wife balked when I 1st bought it considering she thinks a $300 model is better than most of these $500+ models. Right now I cant argue with her since we just replaced an expensive Samsung washing machine that lasted maybe 5 years. Theres another review of this model on these forums and the person tried to get it repaired many times and it appears maybe the same thing is happening to us. I wont go down that road considering repairs like that exceed the cost of a new dishwasher.

We purchased the gold series model WDT790SAYM1 in 2013 replacing a 12 year old Maytag we were very happy with. The Whirlpool just does not clean very well and leaves dishes dirty no matter which cycle you use. The spray arms are cheaply made and do not work well. Its a piece of crap compared to the old Maytag. Do not buy any dishwashers from Whirlpool, they are simply inferior products and a waste of money.

It does not clean as well as I would like. I have to wash the dishes before I put them in the dishwasher. It is also much too noisy for my liking. It has the pot wash and the dish wash. It has several types of cycles, long — short and it has a drying mode. My next dishwasher will be bigger so I do not have to run it every day. My next will be stainless. This particular dishwasher is nothing special but I have my eye on one with the buttons in the top of the door so nothing is visible on the surface. My dishwasher is getting older and I will replace it soon.

Whirlpool Du1100xtpb3 dishwasher: The spring on the latch keeps coming off

Whirlpool Du1100xtpb3 dishwasher: The spring on the latch keeps coming off (3 times in two months). The service repair man charged me for replacing the latch when all that was wrong with it was the spring. That being said, now we are fixing it ourselves. For your information, there is a paper in the bottom of the dishwasher that tells you what is wrong by how the lights are flashing. So each time we replace the spring, we have to reprogram it by pushing a sequence of buttons. Still, I cant figure why the spring wont stay on. Help me if you can.

We bought this dishwasher only 18 months ago and its not worth the money we paid. We have had cheaper models that cleaned way better and didnt need as much maintenance as this one. We already had to spend another $410.00 in having the motor replaced in it!! When calling Whirlpool it only has a 1-year warranty and to have a technician come out just to look at it is $150.00. It is so hard to see in the part where you put the jet dry it doesnt tell you when its full or empty and no matter what it always leaves the dishes wet after. Our other dishwasher that was a way cheaper model always cleaned our dishes and never left any food on the dishes unlike this model and we even rinse the dishes beforehand! Look for another dishwasher to save yourself money in the long run!

I attempted to use the dishwasher tonight and it is completely dead once again. I usually have had good luck whirlpool appliances. After all these problems will no longer be using this brand. I contacted the store where I bought it from, Famous Tate. The first time it stopped working just a month after the manufacturers warranty ran out and they were absolutely no help. So in the future, I will no longer buy any type of Whirlpool appliances.

I purchased a dishwasher less than 6 months ago from Menards. Since then, I have had to have it repaired twice, due to items getting past the filters and clogging up the drains, so the dishwasher wouldnt drain. I have a 1-year warranty that came with the dishwasher, so both repairs were covered. However, I felt that there should be more done by the company, such as a free extended warranty to cover the cost of repairs as Im sure there will be more; and this is a problem that even the repair man said shouldnt be happening.I called Whirlpool to see what could be done, and all they kept telling me is that I could purchase an extended warranty. I told them (nicely, at first) that I found that ridiculous — why should I pay even more to continue to fix a problem that I shouldnt be having? If they werent going to give me a free extended warranty, I requested at least a partial credit toward another dishwasher, and they could have the piece of junk I have back. They refused to help. I am beyond disappointed with the lack of concern they have for their customers. I will not purchase any more Whirlpool products.

I purchased a Whirlpool dishwasher on March 13, 2007, along with a 3-year extended warranty. Well on Nov. 15, 2011, I had a part in the control panel go out, so they replaced it and they charged me $129.00 for labor and $29.18 for the part. My dishwasher is doing the same thing. It doesnt finish the cycle and I have to restart it, so I called the repairman A&E. They said the part is only guaranteed for 90 days. The part only lasted six months! Its the same part and the same problem. It should be considered a defective part. No matter how many you have replaced the part, it is going to need to be replaced and at $160.00, I cant afford it. They should have to pay for defective parts. Also on this model GU2600XTPSI on the panel buttons, the start button was made with this puffy plastic that has pulled apart and now it looks terrible! None of the other buttons were made this way. What a crappy workmanship, they should be embarrassed. This dishwasher was not cheap; it cost $650.00 plus $50.00 for the warranty. 4 years is too short of a time to have to replace any home appliance. There are appliance out there that are three times as old as mine and they are still working. I guess in the last 10 to 15 years, big companies dont care about their products or the people who buy them, just about their profits! I will never buy or recommend Whirlpool products.

I purchased this Whirlpool dishwasher from Sears on 3/25/2010. Then on 8/11/2012 the dishwasher completely failed to operate. I called for service and they checked it out and they found out that the control board had failed due to moisture getting into the electronic components. They replaced the control board & control panel and the dishwasher has worked until today (2/08/2014) — 17 months, and now exhibits the same problem. The original repair costs including labor was over $400. Not really acceptable and demonstrates very poor quality control and design @ Whirlpool. As of now, I am considering whether to purchase a new machine (obviously neither a Whirlpool or Sears product). As part of the original service the soap dispenser also failed and had to be replaced. I believe Whirlpool should be responsible for some of the repair costs.

Had them come out numerous times and last guy changed out entire motherboard to no avail. Freezer side freezes and then thaws. Now it is just a two sided refrigerator. Before Thanksgiving I was promised new refrigerator and none arrive after phone calls. No refrigerator for thanksgiving. None for Christmas. Finally today at 7:00 this evening January 17 2020 it arrives. I am suppose to be in bed. I have two terminal illnesses. I moved out boxes of stuff out of refrigerator. Installer came in and said I had to move stuff on the porch that they are not allowed to. I get all done, finally sit down and he comes in and says there’s a big ding in bottom of refrigerator. No idea when another refrigerator would come. Who is going to put all my furniture back? Who is going to put my food back in my refrigerator. I bought the entire Whirlpool package Made In America. I should have went cheaper and bought from China. Now there’s trouble with dishwasher and they have been out once already for that. I could worry about taking care of my health if I didn’t spend all my time dealing with whirlpool. Maybe they can bury me in the refrigerator and my daughter won’t have to buy a coffin. I make 1000 a month on disability and get 16 dollars in food stamps. I have thrown 1000s of dollars away after motherboard was fixed. I went and my friend helped and bought new groceries. One day took out a frozen burrito and as I was putting it in microwave I noticed it had mold all over it. Another food dump. Whirlpool pool answering phone says whirlpool cares. Well they don’t care about me.

Its stainless steel and black, and has quite a few wash and dry settings, including an option for heated or unheated dry. The utensil rack is attached to the door of the washer and cant be moved. Two levels, and pretty easy to do dish tetris with. No offense to most standard dishwashers – I need a washer about 3 times the normal size due to a passion for cooking. Its slick and matches my ultra-modern, borderline-Swedish interior.

Here is what happened during the first 6 months: 1) Would not dissolve dry soap or packets as there were still particles and plastic in the dispenser. 2) Dishes were not getting clean and were spotty. 3) Would not dry dishes, ever!!! 4) Parts would keep popping off as we would find them on the bottom or hanging down. 5) Final straw was this morning around 4 a.m. (12/4/16)… woke up to the smell of wire burning in the house and discovered it was coming from the dishwasher that we had put on delay wash that night and when we opened the door, smoke came out from inside!!Since it was past purchase warranty date, we had no warranty and the builder would not return any of my calls on any problems and the manufacturer of my house closed the factory. Needless to say, we now have to spend another $900+ for another dishwasher! Not happy at all about this Whirlpool model and would not recommend it.

I purchased 4 Whirlpool appliances late 2014. The French door refrigerator close to a year later made a piercing sound several times during a day. I immediately contacted Whirlpool and the representative directed me to YouTube to listen to the normal sounds the refrigerator would make. My first thought was I have been a homeowner for 30 years and countless appliances and never heard such a horrible sound. At the same time they sold me an extended warranty over the phone. He assured me sounds were covered. The sound just kept getting louder and more frequent. I could not take this piercing sound and called back. They sent a local repair service. At the time the repair person came out the refrigerator was not making the sound. I played a video recording and the repairman even said what an terrible sound it was. He continued to check everything over and said — everything looks good. I dont know what the sound is coming from. I asked, What is Whirlpool going to do? He said, nothing, the warranty ran out and your extended warranty does not cover sounds. What a ripoff! Now the drawers broke and another thing they wont cover! I also have problems with the dishwasher I purchased at the same time. Even putting on the extended hot dry I need to wipe everything off. I should have just open a window a tossed out over 2k. I know that appliances are made to be disposable, but throwing away a $40 toaster after 18 months is easier to live with than throwing away a $350-$400 dishwasher. We bought a new dishwasher at Lowes on October 15, 2015. It is now May 11, 2016. The manufacturers warranty was for a year. It has been about a year and half since it was installed. Not very long for an appliance that one would assume would last at least 5-10 years. When we called Whirlpool to see about a repair visit, we were told that the trip to the house would cost $105, and the parts could go as high as $250-$300. So if you weigh the original price to the repair price, having it repaired is not rational, but neither is throwing away a dishwasher thats almost new. Its still clean inside. No soap residue or anything in the tub. In the past, by the time we were in the market for a new dishwasher, our old dishwasher looked like it had been through the war. It just breaks my heart to know that a company is so slipshod at making appliances that they wear out in less than two years. There doesnt seem to be any recourse but to dump a perfectly good, relatively new dishwasher in the landfill. We are leaving a very big footprint by doing this.

I purchased Whirlpool french door refrigerator wrf535smbm00 at the beginning of this year and it has really made my house an unpleasant place to be. My main complaint is that it is very, very loud, and seems to vibrate through the whole house. It runs most of the time at a level of 60 dB, which might be considered a low noise level for a mechanical appliance that runs occasionally like a dishwasher, but is quite loud for an appliance that, according to their own specs, runs at least 40% of the time. Nobody wants to notice their refrigerator. They just want it to work.Which brings me to my second complaint, the temperature control is all over the place, generally ranging from 25-50 F. I find it difficult to believe that the government, which always seems overly concerned about the temperature of restaurant food, or the pasteurization of cheeses doesnt care that an appliance nearly every American household has doesnt necessarily do its job, and isnt required to display internal temperature. The old-fashioned set this dial to an arbitrary number and hope its cool enough is not charming. Finally, though the finish is listed as stainless steel, mine started sporting tiny rust spots after only three months. Whirlpool states that Cosmetic issues are covered by the manufacturers warranty for the first 30 days of ownership only. After the first 30 days any repairs for cosmetic issues are the consumers responsibility. It seems as though they know theyve used a low grade of stainless steel.

I had started the dishwasher and had gone to bed last night. I came downstairs ten minutes later to get a bottle of water. There was smoke throughout my downstairs levels. Our Whirlpool Gold Dishwashers control had dark, noxious smoke emitting from it. I tried to turn it off but it was too hot to touch. I went to the breaker box and shut it off there, turned on fans, and went back to bed. This morning, it turned the electricity back on. It started smoking again. I tried to cancel the cycle but it wouldnt cancel. I opened the door to stop the cycle and it continued spraying water and still wouldnt shut down. I had to shut it off at the breaker again. Next problem is my refrigerator, washer and dryer are all on the same breaker. UGH! This is the second Whirlpool I have had. The first one had a rusted tub that leaked into our basement. He also found that all the wiring inside the dishwasher was spliced together, those two things=fire hazard! Because the heater was always running, it was super heating all the water used to clean the dishes. The vent to release the steam is located on the top of the door (right under counter edge). The dishwasher was producing hotter and more steam which slowly ate away at the particle board under the cabinets. No, we dont have the most expensive countertops, but Whirlpool should be held responsible for producing a faulty product with a faulty design. I have contacted Whirlpool and they claim to have mailed a claim form 3 weeks ago. I have not received it. Posted on social media about it, and was told I must only speak with the person who sent me the form. I would love to, but since I havent actually received any contact from anyone (other than a fb post) I dont know who to contact, at what number, or email!

Speaking about codes of the Whirlpool dishwasher, we mean errors that are recognized by the self-diagnosis system of a technology. The certain code is given for every malfunction. If the code is properly deciphered, you can reveal the causes of the problems independently and eliminate them without resorting to the help of a specialist.

Fault Diagnosis Features

The main feature of the self-diagnostics system of the Whirlpool dishwasher is that no one code has an unambiguous decryption. In other words, the error code can not specifically indicate a particular fault. It only determines the range of possible failures that the user must pay attention to and check first. For example, the E5 error indicates that:

  • water doesn’t enter the dishwasher;
  • a too low head pressure in the system;
  • a clog, which has formed inside the appliance, does not allow the water to circulate normally;
  • the inlet valve is broken.

So, as you see, the range of faults indicated by this code is quite wide. It takes some time to find a concrete breakdown and eliminate it.

Any of the errors mentioned below can be caused by a breakdown of the control module or a typical short-term failure of the firmware.

It turns out that we can add this fact to the standard interpretation of the E5 error. And if after checking the water flow in the device, inspecting the intake valve, filters and hoses for blockages, it turns out that everything is in order, then you have to deal with the control module.

According to the specialist’s advice, with the occurrence of any system error, its owner has to reset the dishwasher with full de-energization in order to exclude short-term system failure. Having done it firstly, start searching for a malfunction.

Nevertheless, everything is not so easy with the Whirlpool’s self-diagnosis system

Even if you have a detailed interpretation of each code, there is no guarantee that this code will 100% appropriate for a malfunction specifically in your case. However, the probability is very high 🙂

E Errors

Describing the codes of the self-diagnosis system, we will follow the next algorithm: first, we will indicate the malfunction code, then its brief explanation, and the reasons for the appearance. And then we will briefly recommend how to eliminate these causes with your own hands. Such description will be written for each error.

Е1

It means that the system, which is responsible for protecting the case from the leakage, has given an alarm. In this case, you should carefully check the bottom of the washing chamber, the salt container, and the nozzles for leaks. You need to find the place where water leaks or drops. Also, it is necessary to inspect the hoses of the dishwasher for damage and, if necessary, replace them.

Е2

This error signals about a violation of the electrical safety system. Probably, the wiring has been stripped off somewhere and a current gets to the dishwasher’s case. In addition, if you feel a tingle when you put your hand on the metal part of the dishwasher, this once again confirms that the problem has occurred and this is very dangerous. It is necessary to immediately switch off the appliance, disassemble it, and check all wiring and contacts.

Е3

And this is an indication of the problems related to the heating element. Perhaps, the heating element and the thermostat are out of order; the supply wiring is damaged; or the bus on the control board is burnt out. It will be necessary to stage-by-stage check all of the above-mentioned parts with a multimeter. We strongly recommend not to deal with the control module independently as it may aggravate the problem.

Е4

It signals about the problems related to the thermostat. Possibly, the element is burnt out, or its supply wiring is cut off. It is necessary to check the thermostat with a multimeter. If the part is working properly, you should carefully check the wires leading to it. If both parts are correct, then the issue is in the control module.

Е5

This means that the water in the dishwasher is gained for too long, much longer than the program supposes. What could have happened? Perhaps you just forgot to open the tap-tee valve. Maybe there is no water supply in the whole building or the filling hose is clogged. Most often, not even the hose itself gets clogged, but a small flow filter, which is located at the point where the hose is connected to the dishwasher case. In the worst situation, the inlet valve failed or its power was disrupted. Check everything from water supply and blockages to the intake valve. Probably, it will be necessary to change the valve.

Е6

For some reason, the appliance can not drain water. Check three main reasons:

  • blockage of the drain hose or garbage filter;
  • pump failure;
  • breakdown of the circulation pump.

In most cases, clogs become the cause of the error. If cleaning the filter and hose does not help, you need to inspect the pump. Apparently, its impeller does not rotate because of the dirt that has accumulated on it. Also, the pump could go out of order. It is recommended to check the parts with a multimeter. For expert inspection and repair of the circulation pump, the assistance of a specialist is required.

F Errors

F0

This error doesn’t appear without a reason. A dishwasher displays it only when the user launches a test program. It means that one of the sensors is out of order. The problem is solved by a step-by-step checking the sensors, detection of the faulty, and its replacement.

F1

Most likely the error indicates a breakdown of the temperature sensor. If this sensor transmits incorrect readings to the control module, the temperature inside the dishwasher begins to skip. The system makes a decision to stop the work and shows an error. The problem is solved by checking and replacing the temperature sensor.

F2

This means that a mechanical float sensor has triggered. It is located in the tray of the Whirlpool dishwasher. It can be a simple sticking of contacts or maybe the issue is really in leaking. What to do? Well, first of all, you need to remove the side wall of the dishwasher and carefully inspect its tray with a flashlight. If the tray is dry, you can move the sensor using the screwdriver to make the contacts open and continue to use the equipment.

F3

It indicates on the heating element, thermistor or bus of the control module. All these details have to be checked and, if necessary, changed to new ones.

It is better to replace the bus of the control module with the assistance of a specialist.

F4

If this error appears on the screen, it is necessary to check the period when the device drains water. Restart the dishwasher, install the program, and listen to how fast the appliance collects and drains water. If there is no drain at all, it is necessary to inspect the pump, drain hose (and possibly a siphon installed under the sink), as well as the bus or firmware of the electronic module.

The last one is a low probability occasion, so we will concentrate on the drain pump and the hose. Often clogs are blamed for all the problems, but sometimes the pump must be changed, too.

F5

It indicates on the problems with the sprinkler. In the overwhelming majority of cases, this unpleasant error appears when the sprinkler nozzles are clogged up. To eliminate the problem, it is enough to clean them with a thin sharp object like a gypsy needle. In another situation, this code appears when the engine stops working. If it happens, its diagnosis and replacement are required.

F6 code. If this error occurs, you should check the water in the appliance. Start with cleaning flow filter’s mesh of the filling hose. If this does not help, you need to inspect the flow sensor and, if necessary, change it.

F7

If the code F7 appears, you need to carefully inspect the intake valve. If the valve is working correctly (opens and closes to the end), proceed to the pressostat examination. Firstly, blow its tube and then test the part with a multimeter. The broken detail can’t be repaired, only the replacement will help.

F8

It means that there is not enough water in the dishwasher system. The problem is caused by the clogged filters placed in front of the intake valve or poorly working impeller. In the very rare cases, the inlet valve is the reason of the error code appearance. In addition, this error often occurs if the dishwasher owner uses a poor quality dishwashing detergent. The problem is eliminated by cleaning the filter, cleaning or replacing the impeller, and adjusting the intake valve. If the problem is in bad quality of a detergent, just stop using it.

F9

It appears when the dishwasher starts to gain and drain water without interruption. In most cases, this indicates the damage of the intake valve, which stops holding water. In more rare cases, such a symptom is a consequence of burnout of the track or triac of the control board. In this situation, the control unit sends a command to gain water but does not stop the process. To eliminate the issue, replace the intake valve or repair the control module.

FA

Optical Water Indicator or simply an indicator, which monitors the purity of incoming water, is out of order. This part may burn or the lens may become dirty. Otherwise, the problem is in the burnt out bus control module.

Such dishwasher malfunctions are eliminated as follows:

  • Pull out and clean the lens;
  • check the indicator with a multimeter, and if it is burnt, change it;
  • if the problem is in the burnt out bus, contact a repair service to professionally repair the control board.

FC

This error occurs if your Whirlpool dishwasher model is equipped with a sensor determining the hardness of the water is out of order. To solve the problem, test the sensor and replace it if needed.

Most Whirlpool dishwashers have been programmed with a service/diagnostic mode to aid you in troubleshooting the appliance.

So, how do get your Whirlpool dishwasher unit into diagnostic mode?

Read on to discover how to enter diagnostic mode in your Whirlpool dishwasher…

Essentially, the steps to move into service mode are similar between a variety of Whirlpool dishwasher models but for a little variation in the buttons to select.

To point you in the right direction, below are the instructions you should follow to enter Whirlpool dishwasher diagnostic mode:

How to enter Whirlpool dishwasher diagnostic mode – method 1

Step 1:

Turn your Whirlpool dishwasher off and ensure there are no lit LED’s.

Step 2:

Disconnect power to your dishwasher.

Step 3:

Reconnect power to your dishwasher and with the unit’s door open, quickly press then hold the buttons “On/Off” + “Start/Pause” (both).

Keep in mind that to succeed, you should press and hold the two buttons within 60 seconds (of reconnecting the power).

Step 4:

Close the door.

Your dishwasher will now run diagnostics as indicated below (remember that during the service mode, various components are typically cycled to confirm if they’re functioning correctly).

  1. The water valve

The water valve is turned on. During this test, 3 Litres of water are usually allowed to enter the unit by the flow meter. (A turbidity value will be displayed.)

  1. Wash pump heater

The wash pump is turned on. The heater will then turn on after 10 seconds.

The beeper sounds when the temp has risen 3-5 degrees.

Also bear in mind that the dishwasher stops when the temp has reached 57°C (134.6°F).

You should press “Start” to move into the next step.

  1. High Wash Pump Dispenser

In this step, the wash pump is turned on for 8 seconds (after a 2 second delay). The dispenser is then turned on for 45 seconds.

  1. Pause

There will be a pause (for 30 seconds).

  1. Drain Pump

The drain pump is turned on for 30 seconds.

  1. End (the final step)

There will be a beep (one time). The board type code is displayed in this step.

Another way to enter service mode in a few models is by pressing any 3 (three) keys in the 1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3 sequence except Start, Delay,  or Cancel  – make sure the delay between key presses is not more than 1 sec.

In some cases, you have to press button #2 then shut the door to begin the service cycle (Don’t forget the diagnostics cycle starts once you close the door).

How To Exit Whirlpool dishwasher

If you want to exit diagnostic mode at any time, just disconnect power from your dishwasher.

Whirlpool dishwasher diagnostic mode codes

If a problem is found, the dishwasher may display an error code, flash an LED, or sound a beep.

Below are the most common Whirlpool dishwasher service error codes, their meaning, and what to check.

Whirlpool dishwasher error code E1

This indicates that water inlet failure was detected.

To be clear, E1 code will be displayed if the unit’s flow meter was unable to detect a proper fill (after 4 minutes) during the water-inlet test step.

What to check

  • Check the unit’s water supply.
  • Check the water inlet valve itself.
  • Check if the inlet has an issue.
  • Check if the flow meter is faulty.
  • Check the unit’s pressure switch for problems.
  • Check the drain.
  • Check the control.

Whirlpool dishwasher error code E3

This points to a potential heater failure.

In other words, E3 error code is shown when the temp doesn’t reach the right value after ninety (90) minutes during the wash pump heater step.

What to check

  • Check the heater.
  • Check the thermistor.
  • Check the control.

Whirlpool dishwasher error code E4

This signals a probable overflow in the dishwasher.

You see, if water has flowed into the base (and the overflow switch has been activated), the appliance will display E4.

What to check

  • Check the detergent– you should use correct amounts and the right type.
  • Check whether the unit is level and level it– the problem could be occurring because the appliance is not level.
  • Check the unit’s overflow switch– if could be faulty (leading to the issue).
  • Check the appliance’s drain pump – if it is not operating properly, there could be drainage problems and hence the flooding.
  • Check the water in sump -take a look at the amount in there.
  • Check for leaks– Locate the leak and repair.

Whirlpool dishwasher error code E6

This normally signals NTC open circuit failure/problem.

It’s worth mentioning that error code E6 is displayed if the Temperature Sensor has been detected as having an open circuit.

What to check

  • Check inlet water temp.
  • Check the thermistor.
  • Check the control.

Whirlpool dishwasher error code E7

This will be shown if NTC short circuit failure has occurred (again in the Temperature Sensor).

What to check

  • Check inlet water temp.
  • Check the thermistor.
  • Check the control.

Final words

You should always try to invoke the service/diagnostic mode in your Whirlpool dishwasher when troubleshooting the appliance.

For the most part, this will help you narrow down on the cause of the problem quickly.

Be sure to search for the tech sheet for your specific model online if the above procedure does not work- tech sheets usually indicate the right button press.
