    Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of the license agreement and continue the installation.

    When the Windows 2003 Setup screen appears, all the existing partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an existing partition, If you press D to delete an
    existing partition, you must then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted press F3 to
    exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with your new install) then restart the machine then when you get to this point in setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new partition and specify the size (if required).
    Windows will by default use all available space.

The boot process starts when you turn on your computer and ends when you log on to Windows Server 2003. There can be various reasons for startup failures. Some can be easily corrected, while others might require you to reinstall Windows Server 2003.

This article will help you understand and troubleshoot most of the errors commonly occurring during the Windows Server 2003 boot process.

While diagnosing a server error, it is important to first determine at which stage the error occurred. A server error can occur when the server is booting, during its running time or even when it is shutting down.

The Boot Process

The boot process will slightly differ depending on whether your server is using an x86-based processor or an Itanium-based processor. This article exclusively deals with x86-based boot Process

If you are running Windows Server 2003 on an x86-based platform, the boot process consists of six major stages:

  1. The pre-boot sequence
  2. The boot sequence
  3. Kernel load sequence
  4. Kernel initialization sequence
  5. Logon sequence
  6. Plug and Play detection

Many files are used during these stages of the boot process. The following sections describe the steps in each boot process stage, the files used, and the errors that might occur.

Stage 1: Pre-Boot Sequence

A normal boot process begins with the pre-boot sequence, in which your computer starts up and prepares to boot the operating system.

The computer will search for a boot device based on the boot order that was configured in the computer’s BIOS settings.

Steps in the Pre-Boot Sequence

The preboot sequence is not truly a part of windows booting process.

The pre-boot sequence consists of the following steps:

  1. When the computer is powered on, it runs a power-on self-test (POST) routine. The POST detects the processor you are using, how much memory is present, the hardware is recognized and what BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) your computer is using.
  2. The BIOS points to the boot device and the Master Boot Record (MBR) is loaded. It is also sometimes called the master boot sector or even just the boot sector.The MBR is located on the first sector of the hard disk. It contains the partition table and master boot code, which is executable code used to locate the active partition.
  3. The MBR points to the Active partition. The active partition is used to specify the partition that should be used to boot the operating system. This is normally the C: drive. Once the MBR locates the active partition, the boot sector is loaded into memory and executed.
  4. The Ntldr file is copied into memory and executed. The boot sector points to the Ntldr file, and this file executes. The Ntldr file is used to initialize and start the Windows Server 2003 boot process.

Possible Errors & Solutions

If you see errors during the pre-boot sequence, they are probably not related to Windows Server 2003, since the operating system has not yet been loaded. The following table lists some common causes for errors and solutions .

Corrupt MBR There are many viruses that affect MBR and corrupt it. You can protect your system from this type of error by using a virus-scanning software. Most of the commonly used virus-scanning programs can correct an infected MBR.
Improperly configured hardware If the POST cannot recognize your hard drive, the pre-boot stage will fail. This error can occur even if the device was working properly and you haven’t changed your configuration. Recheck your device configuration, driver settings. Also check for any hardware malfunction and failure.
No partition is marked as active This can happen if you used the Fdisk utility and did not create a partition from all of the free space. If you created your partitions as a part of the Windows Server 2003 installation and have dynamic disks, marking an active partition is done for you during installation. If the partition is FAT16 or FAT32 and on a basic disk, you can boot the computer to DOS or Windows 9x with a boot disk. Then run Fdisk and mark a partition as active.
Corrupt or missing Ntldr file There are chances that, Ntldr file may be corrupted or deleted by virus attack. . You can restore this file through Automated System Recovery or a Windows Server 2003 boot disk.

Stage 2: Boot Sequence

When the pre-boot sequence is completed, the boot sequence begins. Ntldr switches the CPU to protected mode, which is used by Windows Server 2003 and starts the appropriate file systems.

The contents of the Boot.ini file are read and the information is used to build the initial boot menu selections. When Windows Server 2003 is selected, Ntdetect.com gathers the system’s basic hardware configuration data and passes the collected information back to Ntldr. The system also checks to see if more than one hardware profile is detected; if so, the hardware profile selection menu will be displayed as a part of the startup process.

Possible Errors & Solutions

The following table lists some common causes for errors during the boot stage.

Missing or corrupt boot files If Ntldr, Boot.ini, Bootsect.dos, Ntdetect.com, or Ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt or missing (by a virus or malicious intent), the boot sequence will fail. You will see an error message that indicates which file is missing or corrupt. You can restore these files through Automated System Recovery.
Improperly configured Boot.ini file It can occur when you manually edit Boot.ini or if you have made any changes to your disk configuration. Recheck your configuration.
Unrecognizable or improperly configured hardware If the error that appears is due to Ntdetect.com, the issue is surely due to hardware problems. Best method to trouble shoot it is to remove all the hardware that is not required to boot the computer. Add each piece one by one and boot your computer. This will help you to identify the culprit.

Important Files

Along with the Ntldr file, which was described in the previous section, the following files are used during the boot sequence:

Boot.ini

This is used to build the operating system menu choices that are displayed during the boot process. It is also used to specify the location of the boot partition. This file is located in the root of the system partition. It has the file attributes of System and Hidden.

Bootsect.dos

An optional file that is loaded if you choose to load an operating system other than Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, or Windows NT. It is used only in dual- boot or multi-boot computers. This file is located in the root of the system partition. It has the file attributes of System and Hidden.

Ntdetect.com

Used to detect any hardware that is installed and add that information about the hardware to the Registry. This file is located in the root of the system partition. It has the file attributes of System, Hidden, and Read-only.

Ntoskrnl.exe

Used to load the Windows Server 2003 operating system. This file is located in WindirSystem32 and has no file attributes.

Steps in the Boot Sequence

The boot sequence consists of the following steps:

  1. Ntldr switches the processor from real mode to protected mode. Then it starts file system drivers which supports your computer’s file system.
  2. Ntldr is responsible for reading Boot.ini file. It displays a “boot menu which lets users to choose the operating system to load.If we choose an operating system other than Windows server 2003 say Windows 2000, or Windows NT, the Bootsect.dos file is used to load the alternate operating system, and the Windows Server 2003 boot process terminates.
  3. Ntdetect.com file performs a hardware scan/detection and any hardware that is detected is added to registry in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key. The hardware that Ntdetect.com will recognize includes communication and parallel ports, the keyboard, the floppy disk drive, the mouse, the SCSI adapter, and the video adapter.
  4. Control is passed to Ntoskrnl.exe to start the kernel load process.

Stage 3: Kernel Load Sequence

All of the information that is collected by Ntdetect.com is passed to Ntoskrnl.exe.

The kernel load sequence consists of the following steps:

    1. The Ntoskrnl.exe file is loaded and initialized.
        • Initializes executive subsystems and boot system-start device drivers.

      NOTE: By executive subsystems, I meant Process and Thread Manager, The Virtual Memory Manager, The Input/Output Manager, The Object Manager, Runtime Libraries which all runs in kernel mode.

        • Prepares the system for running native applications.

      NOTE: If you are not familiar with native applications, then it needs explanation. Windows provide two type of API. Well known Windows API (All Windows programs must interact with the Windows API regardless of the language.) and Native API. Native API is used by some windows components like kernel level drivers and system process aka csrss.exe

      • runs Smss.exe.

The function of Ntoskrnl.exe:

  1. The Hardware Abstraction Layer (or HAL) is loaded. The HAL is a kernel mode library (HAL.DLL) that provides a low-level interface with the hardware. Windows components and third-party device drivers communicate with the hardware through the HAL.
  2. The control for the operating system is loaded. The control set is used to control system configuration information such as a list of device drivers that should be loaded.
  3. Low-level device drivers, such as disk drivers are loaded.

Possible Errors & Solutions:

If you have problems loading the Windows Server 2003 kernel, you will most likely need to reinstall the operating system.

Stage 4: Kernel Initialization Sequence

In the kernel initialization sequence, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEHARDWARE Registry is created, device drivers are initialized, and high-order subsystems and services are loaded.

The kernel initialization sequence consists of the following steps:

1. Once the kernel has been successfully loaded, the Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE HARDWARE is created. This Registry key is used to specify the hardware configuration of hardware components when the computer is started.

2. The device drivers that were loaded during the kernel load phase are initialized.

3. Higher-order subsystems and services are loaded.

Note: Higher order subsystem include, POSIX Subsystem, OS/2 subsystem.

Possible Errors & Solutions:

If you have problems during the kernel initialization sequence, you may trying booting to the Last Known Good configuration.

Stage 5: Logon Sequence

Session Manager Subsystem or smss.exe plays a vital role in logon sequence. Its main function include.

1. It creates environment variables in the operating system.

2. It Starts the kernel and user modes of the Win32 subsystem (win32k.sys and csrss.exe). It then starts other subsystems that are listed in HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerSubSystems Registry key.

3. smss.exe starts winlogon.exe, the Windows logon manager.

winlogon.exe is a system service that enables logging on and off of users. It is also responsible for loading user profile.

It invokes GINA( Graphical Identification and Authentication) which displays login prompt. The GINA accepts the user login credentials and passes it back to Winlogon.

Winlogon then Starts Lsass.exe (the Local Security Authority) and passes login credentials to LSA. LSA determine which user account databases is to be used for authentication eg: Local SAM or Active Directory in case you are in a windows domain.

4. smss.exe finally starts the Services subsystem (Services.exe), also known as the Service Control Manager (SCM). It executes and performs a final scan of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServices to see if there are any remaining services that need to be loaded.

Possible Errors & Solutions

  1. If logon errors occurs, they are usually due to an incorrect username or password or to the unavailability of a DNS server or a domain controller to authenticate the request (if the computer is a part of a domain).
  2. Errors can also occur if a service cannot be loaded. If a service fails to load, you will see a message in the System Log of Event Viewer.

Stage 6: Plug and Play Device Detection Phase

If Windows Server 2003 has detected any new devices during the startup process, they will automatically be assigned system resources.

If the device is Plug and Play and the needed driver can be obtained from the Driver.cab file, they are extracted.

Device detection occurs asynchronously with the initial user logon process when the system is started.

Possible Errors & Solutions

If the needed driver files are not found, the user will be prompted to provide them. If you have already installed the driver, then a simple reboot should detect the driver.

Most of the problem that occur at this stage can be corrected by a reboot.

Microsoft has worked so long at releasing Windows Server 2003 that you might be tempted to think that it’s gotten rid of all the problems associated with connecting it to a network. But, like it or not, you’re going to run into problems with networking in Windows Server 2003. You need a little knowledge up front about which errors you’ll most likely face and a strategy to overcome them. Here are some of the problems you’ll encounter.

Adding protocols
By default, Windows Server 2003 installs only TCP/IP. You have to add additional protocols such as IPX/SPX manually. Some applications still require these protocols. To install IPX/SPX on Windows Server 2003, select Start | Control Panel | Network Connections. Open the connection you want to work with by double-clicking it. For this article, I’ll be describing the Local Area Connection on my lab server.

On the Properties page for the connection, click the Install button. From the Select Component Type window, choose Protocol and click Add. From the list of available protocols, choose IPX/SPX Compatible Transport and click OK.

Be default, IPX/SPX is configured to automatically detect the appropriate frame type. Also, the Windows server is assigned an internal network number of 00000000, which is perfectly adequate unless you plan to install Gateway Services for NetWare or File and Print Services for NetWare on the server, at which point it will need a unique IPX address.

If you’re having trouble with your server detecting the appropriate frame type, or if you use multiple frame types, you need to manually specify this information. Open the properties for the IPX/SPX transport and select the Manual Frame Type Detection radio button (see Figure A). Click the Add button to choose the appropriate frame type and to specify the network number for it.

If you’re unsure of the frame types in use on the network, use the config command at the NetWare server to see this information. On the Windows server, you can use ipxroute config to view this information. You’ll see a screen listing that looks similar to this:

Diagnose replication problems
Windows Server 2003 networks rely on a properly working replication scheme for a number of services, including Active Directory and Distributed File System. When this system breaks down, services are not supplied properly. Troubleshooting these types of problems can be difficult. To aid in diagnosing the cause of replication problems, Microsoft has provided a utility called DNSLint, which is available for download. Run the downloaded executable to extract two files. One is the dnslint.exe executable, and the second is documentation.

You can use DNSLint to troubleshoot three specific types of problems:

  • Diagnose problems potentially causing a lame delegation situation. Lame delegation is a situation in which a DNS server has been made responsible for a particular domain but either doesn’t exist or is not the authoritative DNS server for that domain.
  • Verify a specific set of DNS records on multiple DNS servers.
  • Verify the DNS records specifically needed for Active Directory replication.

DNSLint produces an HTML report after it completes its tests. To use DNSLint to verify Active Directory DNS records on the local server, use the following command from a command prompt:
dnslint /ad /s localhost /v

Windows Server 2003 network adapter drivers not available
Quite a few times in various newsgroups, I’ve come across messages from people who have indicated that they haven’t been able to find Windows Server 2003 drivers for their particular network adapter. Quite a few interesting workarounds have been tried, including using drivers from Windows XP and, in one case, from Windows NT.

While these are good short-term solutions, the appropriate long-term solution is to replace the NIC with one that has drivers for Windows Server 2003 available and preferably one that is on the Hardware Compatibility List. Using drivers from other versions of Windows can introduce instability to the system and even result in blue screen errors.

Network load balancing hardware problem
Network load balancing (NLB) can be a very useful tool for providing high availability and more reliable services to your users. However, some users who have enabled this feature under Windows Server 2003 have found that they are no longer able to ping the balanced adapters. This can result in the failure of monitoring systems, which rely on this information to determine whether the system is available.

To be able to ping load-balanced network adapters in Windows Server 2003, the adapters must support multipacket receive indications. Only a few adapters currently support this feature. To see if your NICs are supported under NLB, use the chknic utility from the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit. You can download the Resource Kit tools from Microsoft’s Web site. The following is sample output from this command on my lab server:

Keep up with hot fixes
Within two weeks of the Windows Server 2003 release, Microsoft started releasing hot fixes for it to correct specific networking problems. For example, on May 2, 2003, Microsoft released a hot fix (Knowledge Base Article 817689) to correct a problem in which disconnecting a network adapter from the network caused associated routing entries with that adapter to not be removed from the routing table.

A more serious related problem has also been corrected via hot fix. If you have two network adapters in a Windows Server 2003 system, and both are configured with static IP addresses and connected to the same network, on disconnecting and reconnecting the primary adapter, the secondary adapter also loses its connection. Because both adapters point to the same destination, when the primary is reconnected, its route is recreated, but the secondary one never is. This is corrected via a hot fix that you’ll find in Knowledge Base Article 817690.

As time goes on, the number of hot fixes will grow. Keeping up to date with them will help you keep your problems to a minimum.

Get your IP address without using the command line
When troubleshooting network problems, you often need to use the command-line tool ipconfig on Windows machines, especially for those machines that get their IP addresses from DHCP. You’ve probably used the commands ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew more than once to release and renew DHCP addressing information. I’m also willing to bet that you’ve used ipconfig more than a few times to get networking information such as MAC address, system IP address, etc.

While these steps aren’t that difficult, if you’re troubleshooting a network problem, it’s more than likely that you’re already viewing the network connection from the GUI. Just do the DHCP release/renew there and also get DHCP information for the network adapter. On the adapter status screen, click the Support tab. As you can see in Figure B, this particular adapter is manually configured since this server is a domain controller.

Notice the Repair button at the lower left-hand corner of the window. This button will refresh the DHCP lease, clear the ARP, NetBIOS, and DNS caches, and reregister the adapter with WINS and DNS services.

Determine which process is using a port
Only a single program at a time is allowed to use a particular TCP port. There may come a time when you need to determine which program is using a particular port or which port a particular process is using. A new feature of the netstat command makes this easy in Windows Server 2003.

To get a list of the current TCP information on your server, issue the command netstat –o from your server’s command line. The –o parameter indicates that netstat should also display the process identifier (PID) associated with each connection. Locate the service in the netstat list for which you need more information and take note of the number in the PID column. As an example, I want to determine what is using TCP port 1041 on my lab server. Issuing netstat –o yields the following partial results:

Note that the process associated with port 1041 is PID 1320.

Open Task Manager. By default, Task Manager doesn’t show the PID. To add this column, click View | Select Columns, add the PID column, and click OK, as shown in Figure C.

Sort the Task Manager by PID by clicking on the PID column. In Figure D, you can see that PID 1320 is associated with ismserv.exe, which is the Intersite Messaging service.

Slowly getting better
While it adds a lot of new and improved features, Windows Server 2003 is still confounding people at times. But Microsoft has made it easier to troubleshoot and diagnose some of these problems by adding new features and improving existing ones.

При этом, как и в предыдущем случае, пользователю предоставляется возможность отправить отчет о возникшей
ошибке на адрес Microsoft, отказаться от отправки отчета и просмотреть дополнительную техническую информацию.

Вы можете вручную сконфигурировать сервис Error Reporting. Для этого выполните следующие операции:
1. Запустите утилиту System на панели управления, перейдите на вкладку Advanced (Допольнительно) и нажмите кнопку

    Windows operating system, сервис будет всегда сообщать о проблемах в работе компонентов режима ядра. Помимо этого, вы сможете активизировать уведомления о проблемах в работе программ, установив флажок
    Programs. Нажатием кнопки Choose Programs (Выбор программ) вы можете выполнить дальнейшее конфигурирование сервиса
    Error Reporting, сформировав список программ, для которых следует выводить подобные извещения.

По сравнению с Windows XP, в операционных системах из семейства Windows Server 2003 сервис Error Reporting обладает дополнительными возможностями. Так, например, при его конфигурировании вы имеете возможность задать опцию отслеживания незапланированных остановов системы (рис. 25.5), установив флажок
Unplanned machine shutdowns. Также обратите внимание на флажок Force queue mode for program errors, при установке которого сервис Error Reporting будет выводить извещения об ошибках в режиме очереди. В случае множественных ошибок в работе приложений, сервис отобразит извещения о 10 последних ошибках, когда пользователь с административными правами зарегистрируется в системе. Каждое из сообщений будет отображено в отдельном окне, что предоставит администратору возможности выбора действий.

Когда в системе возникает состояние ошибки STOP, Windows всегда создает компактный файл дампа памяти. Таким образом, сервис Error Reporting всегда может отправить отчет о проблеме, приложив этот файл дампа, даже если вы сконфигурировали систему таким образом, чтобы она создавала дамп ядра или даже полный дамп памяти.

    I am facing issue after installing WebsitePanel on Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64. Following is the error message.

  • If it is WSP 1.2.0, all 3 applications(portal,es,server) should be running under .net 4.0. Does it help if you navigate to asp.net tab for es site properties page and change .net framework version to 4.0? As I know, this would automatically update
    the script maps for you.
